I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher. This book is an in-depth look at the life of musician Alice Cooper. It begins with his birth and proceeds to cover nearly every major event in his life, both personal and professional. There are plenty of pictures throughout, with several pictures on multiple pages. The information also gives a short history of the different people that Cooper worked with. For anyone interested in hard rock, early rock, or Alice Cooper, this is the perfect book to at least skim if not read closely.
Beautiful coffee table style book. Lots of great pictures. I've been an Alice Cooper fan since 1971. My very first concert was Alice in 1973 with ZZ Top as the opening act. Even today I still go to see Alice almost every time he is within driving distance. Very nice book. I cannot say that there is much in the book that I didn't already know and quite a few of the pictures I've seen before. On the downside I think there are a lot of things that were never mentioned or barely if that. There was also a ton of repetition throughout the book. My advice, it's a great book for an Alice Cooper fan to have but I would wait for it to go on sale before buying it.
I never listened to his music because his eye makeup scared me so much. It is a coffee table sized book, loaded with color and black and white photos. It came in a black slip case with black velvet on one side.
He grew up in Detroit and in a family with a Christian minister father, loves baseball and is passionate about golf. His family moved to Arizona, loved the Beetles and formed a band called the Earwings as sort of a take off of them. The band changed names several times and were a counter to the Peace and Love movement. Church members complained about his long hair.
His music evolved to gallow humor and shock entered the shows by accidemt. A live chicken wandered by on stage, and being a city boy, he said that he did not know that they can't fly. (I dispute that as a fact because my Aunt Garnet's chickens roosted in one giant tree at night. He threw the chicken off the stage and instead of flying, it was grabbed and torn apart by the crowd, they drank the chicken's blood. From then one, more shock became apart of the presentation, often having large snakes wrapped around him. The book delves into him meeting and liking many celebrities. A lot of well knowns, my eyes start to glaze over. But the stories were all amazing.
The packaging, concept, and scope of coverage of Alice Cooper’s works are excellent. The book could have used one last proofread to catch typos (for example, there are multiple chapters where the date of a particular event or release in the chapter header conflicts with dates provided in the text).
Brilliant book, great anecdotes and brought back some amazing memories. Songs going round my head as I had all of Alice's albums up to and including Welcome to my Nightmare. Have now caught up with all his later stuff. Him playing Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar blew me away!
