Fans of Abby Jimenez and Alexis Daria will love this novel about one New York City woman skilled in producing swoon‑worthy reality TV shows but whose own life is a mess, with nothing ever going according to plan.

Ana Karina loves her job—though she isn't quite where she thought she'd be by now. As reality tv producer, she orchestrates extravagant marriage proposals that always (read: mostly) go as planned. If they don't, she’s not afraid to cut and paste scenes to perfection afterward. Even if her arrogant film editor isn't a fan. But what does he know about romance anyway?

If only Ana's love life was as simple as fixing botched engagements. She's sick and tired of guys who give her the ick. Open‑toed sandals? Gross. Mr. Casual. No, thanks. Barcode tattoo? Cut! Ana's got a mile‑long list of all the cringey things to steer clear of. And Ana loves lists. Her to‑dos for her best friend's wedding, show ideas to pitch, and even her list of what she does want in Mr. Right. With only four requirements, why is it taking so long to find him?

She refuses to put her life on hold waiting. She’ll just date four men who each embody one quality. Never mind them lacking in other departments. Yet as she finds the Prince Charming in every frog, she also gets closer to facing who she’s avoided for years. Herself.

If you're going to read this, you MUST do the audio. The narration by Inés del Castillo was absolute perfection. It also had sound effects! I was finding any moment to listen.

Snarky and a tad chaotic, reality TV producer Ana Karina is the type of heroine I love to read about, especially within the hustle-and-bustle setting of New York. I discovered afterwards the author has over fifteen years' experience in reality TV production herself, which explains her ability to bring this career to life. The behind the scenes was too fun!

The heart of the story is Ana finding the perfect man with the help of her list of four requirements. But instead she ends up dating four different men, each embodying only ONE of her requirements. With that comes varying personalities and conflicts, of course. The situations Ana finds herself in—oh my. I laughed and laughed.

Of course the right but unexpected choice is looming in the background. Their interactions made me so giddy. And as Ana slowly unravels more about herself through her dating experiences, facing her fears in the process, it ends with a really heartwarming message. I loved this one!

This story turned out much different to what I thought it would be when I first started reading this book. The main character also seemed to change drastically as the story progressed (and I'm not talking about character development). A main character doesn't have to be likeable for me to enjoy or appreciate a story but my dislike of this main character and her actions truly impeded on my enjoyment of this novel. It's disappointing because I originally like the main character but through her dating 'journey' and how she treated her friendship, I ended up severely disliking this character.

Luckily, I did enjoy the love interest but I don't feel like the ending did their relationship justice and the ending of the book was quite abrupt.

This was an okay read but not one that will leave a positive or lasting impression.

3.5/5

This was pretty refreshing and truly hilarious, it had me actually laughing out loud at times so it definitely was a lot of fun. The audio production was phenomenal with excellent narration by Ines del Castillo and added sound effects that made it an immersive experience. I loved Ana’s growth and she was so witty and snarky. I struggled with her relationship with her best friend though, Gia really rubbed me the wrong way and the ending was pretty abrupt. I needed more from that conclusion but overall this was a cute listen.

An absolute surprise delight debut romcom that had me laughing out loud the whole way through! This was excellent on audio with some amazing sound effects! It also gave me huge Bridget Jones vibes in the best Cuban-American way as a list-loving reality tv producer tries to find love and career success as a 30-something Manhattan woman. Highly recommended, especially on audio! Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review! I can't wait to read more from this author!!

Discovering and being true oneself, and finding the love you deserve where you least expect it

Ana is a producer on a Reality TV show where couples propose to their love ones in extravagant and unexpected ways. Although she is surrounded by love at work she can't seem to find it for herself. She has lists with who her perfect man is and everything he isn't and is holding out for Mr. Right. When her best friend who is soon to be married convinces her to just put herself out there and maybe be surprised, she ends up dating a few guys who are all wrong for her. She learns a lot, makes a few changes and maybe figures out that her guy has been there all along she just didn't realize it.

There are very few things about this book that worked for me, and while it was mildly entertaining, it felt more like a train wreck you cannot look away from, or in this case put down. The characters were all very immature and awful for the most part, there is also way too much infidelity for my liking. It was cliche and cringy in many places, and overall there was not enough humour, chemistry, and overall fun. I really wanted to enjoy myself, I love reality tv, and latinx women being unapologetically themselves and finding love, but this one was a huge miss for me.

Ana Takes Manhattan by Lissette Decos is a lighthearted women's fiction/romance story about a reality tv producer.

Story Recap:
Ana Karina is a reality TV producer and she loves her job. She produces a show that arranges elaborate and over-the-top marriage proposals. She’s been doing the show for years and the proposals always go as planned. Until one doesn’t and Ana finds herself worried about her job.

Ana decides it’s time to find the right guy. She’s tired of the single life and tired of men who don’t meet her four requirements. Since she can’t find a man who meets them all, she goes on a series of dates with a man who each meets one of her requirements. Between the four men, she should be able to find someone compatible.

My Thoughts:
I enjoyed this cute story very much. Although there is a romance, this is more of a women’s fiction story and the romance takes a back seat. I loved the behind-the-scenes look at a fictional reality TV show. The setting in New York City was fun too. I love books set there, and the author made me feel like I was in the city.

I liked Ana very much but didn’t like her friend Gia very much and I didn’t think it was a supportive friendship. Although Ana has some growth in the story, it’s not as much as I thought she needed.

There are some very funny moments in this story, and I enjoyed the humor.

Recommendation:

I recommend Ana Takes Manhattan to anyone who enjoys women’s fiction. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I'm not quite sure how to rate this book. I think a 3 1/2 will do but rounded up because I did finish it!

I agree with several other reviewers that the characters seemed to be very immature (I believe that they were almost all supposed to be in their 30's, but I am not sure if it was ever pointed out),

Ana is a reality Tv producer who has been on the slow track to fame and has also been screwed by love. Ana has this habit of making lists for everything and being prepared for them every few pages of the book. This one list is supposed to help her find a man - "Open‑toed sandals? Gross. Mr. Casual. No, thanks. Barcode tattoo? Cut!"

Of course, the men (yes, that's correct), she has four men on the string now that she is seriously looking, and none of them flip her switch except for the ex that messed her up. I'm not going to tell you which one she ended up with, but you'll figure it out because it is a well-used trope.
So many of the characters were immature, selfish, and very annoying-at least, that is how I saw them.

I did enjoy this book enough to finish it. It is a fast read that would be perfect for the beach.

This is appropriately labeled General (Women’s) Fiction as wanting a romance and having one are two different things. Ana Karin is a successful RV producer. The show she produces is beginning its ninth season and follows real people through dating to an over the top perfect marriage proposal. Much of the story takes place while she is fulfilling maid of honor duties for her best friend since college Gia. She has her perfect guy lists and no one is ticking all the boxes and so she tries to date a few men that meet some of her requirements.

This is a hit and miss kind of book. There are some genuinely funny lines and moments and some tender things too. But it is all packaged with a character that can be immature and one dimensional. There are glimpses of depth when she describes growing up in a Cuban community, her moms death and her dad remarrying a year later. I wanted her to talk to her dad about that or connect with her half sister. But the sisters wedding is played for laughs instead.

The men she chooses to date also are part of the roller coaster story. This is not a cheating book as she is not exclusive (nor being intimate) with the men. But it all seems chaotic to juggle them. I do get that she learns something from each relationship. But I didn’t feel a connection to any including the person that she actually who may end up the real deal.

And I was sad that the main friendship with Gia also takes a hit, making her more a bridezilla. I love best friends that support each other. And I wanted their issue resolved because it is a big part of the story. Otherwise Gia is shallow and not worthy of the friendship.

I like the cover and the guy she eventually chooses. The author has worked in tv so the show pitches and focus on editing and such all comes with authority. I get the idea of the story but I wish there was more depth or that when it is over that I cared more. Thank you to NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I want to preface this by stating while I did not enjoy this book, I really do hope others do. There’s much in the narrative that will get you laughing and smiling, and while the romance didn’t hit for me, it may very well for you.

But for me, this book simply wasn’t it. At least not the way I would have liked.

The Lead

Ana was a character I went through highs and lows with. The highs came in moments of true endearment...when her character started to feel more three-dimensional and relatable. At one point she discusses the traditions of her family New Years throughout her life and it was literally word for word how I grew up as well. It brought such a smile to my face. Moments like those endeared me to Ana.

But they faded all too soon.

Her character read rather superficial and shallow. On one hand, it is interesting to read a character that one may not immediately warm up to— there’s certain immaturity and judgmental attitude she needs to work through, and eventually she gets there, but for some (aka me), it takes too long to do so.

The Romance

The true romance took too long to develop, and when it finally started I found I simply did not care. It didn’t feel genuine, there was lack of chemistry which became a lack of care on my part. That said, ironically my favorite character is the main love interest. I actually really liked him! And maybe if that facet of the story had been developed earlier, or just had been more present, I may have had another perspective on the romance as a whole.

Toxic Friendship

Romance books, for me, always need to have strong friendships within it. Characters our lead(s) can rely on as they navigate the workings on their heart. Unfortunately, the main friendship in this book felt toxic and, like much of the book, shallow. I was really disheartened by it.

The Lists

I can only take so much of the numbered lists on every other page. It became distracting rather than add to any of the endearment I would sometimes feel for the lead and story.

The Ick Factor

In one of my previous reviews I discuss how one of my no-gos in reading is cheating, be it emotional, physical, what have you. It happened too often for my liking in this story. This is more of a personal nitpick because I am sure others would view this facet much more differently than me, which is fair. But this was a massive red light for me.

It’s Okay, that’s Life

I wanted romance, but didn’t get much of it. I did get some laughs, some heartwarming moments along the way, but it was cluttered with lists, too many devolving almost-love stories, and a lead who rang more juvenile than adult.

It wasn’t the book for me, but I hope you find in it what I could not.

Thank you NetGalley and Forever for providing me an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis: Ana Karina loves her job—though she isn't quite where she thought she'd be by now. As reality tv producer, she orchestrates extravagant marriage proposals that always (read: mostly) go as planned. If they don't, she’s not afraid to cut and paste scenes to perfection afterward. My Thoughts: I think I might of enjoyed this story more if I had the audio vs the book. The main character, Ana, has growth throughout the story, I would loved to have seen more growth. She was witty and a bit sarcastic. Gia, her best friend, I did not care for as much and I struggled with their relationship. This did have a romance element to it but felt more like women’s literature than a romance. The author did a great job with details of New York and behind the scenes at a reality TV show. There were some laugh out loud moments in the story. The ending of the story was abrupt and left me for wanting more. This was not a terrible read, I did enjoy it, I think I would have enjoyed it more on audio. I would recommend picking up the audiobook on this one.

I thought the characters of Ana Takes Manhattan were fun to read about. I did not enjoy reading about Ana as much as some of the other characters. Ana films reality to vs shows about love and marriage. This still was a decent book to read.

Thank you @readforeverpub for this book. I was intrigued by the premise of this story of Ana who is a producer of a marriage proposal reality show. The book was entertaining but I felt both Gia and Ana were way too immature and didn't agree with their behavior. I was expecting more romance but this book was more women's fiction. I was a bit annoyed with Ana's list and how she thought she can create a perfect boyfriend.

Ana is a reality TV producer on a show that specializes in over-the-top marriage proposals. If only her own love life went as smoothly. Ana's best friend is getting married and she is nursing a crush on Best Man Landon. Sure she's only seen him in a photo but she is convinced he is perfect for her. When Ana's best friend suggests she look elsewhere, Ana decides to live a little and says yes to anyone who asks her out on a date. As these mostly disastrous dates progress, Ana learns more about what she wants out of a relationship.

Ana Takes Manhattan has some cute moments and Ana is a likable lead character. The plot is a good one but the execution did not always work. Overall, I think there were too many sub-plots, too many men in the picture so we don't get to know anyone that well (and there was not enough time spent on the one man who is clearly the right one for Ana). The writing was vague at times so I wasn't sure how actually interested Ana was in any of the men and what went on during her dates. There are a few instances of cheating and implied cheating. Still, I can see how this will appeal to romance readers who also enjoy reality TV and having a main character who isn't sure what she wants and decides to find out by dating four men with very different personalities.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy.

•••Spoiler free review below•••

Ana is a reality television producer of a popular, extravagant engagement proposal show. She's surrounded by love and romantic gestures everyday but can't seem to find her own happily ever after. She keeps meeting guys who have one specific quality she wants in her future husband but never one who has it all. After so much disappointment, she decides...why can't she date them all? And just edit the parts out of her mind that are not what she's looking for? Things quickly spiral out of hand in her personal and work life and Ana is left wondering how she can pick up the pieces and that maybe it's okay to ask for help.

Read this if you like:
- lists
- learning from mistakes
- the behind the scenes of reality TV
- a romance book without the main plot point of an actual relationship
- a main character who is still finding their way in their 30s
- lilac scarves (trust me??????)

Ana Takes Manhattan was released TODAY and if it's not already on your tbr, it should be!

Kristina says: Cuban-American television producer Decos debuts with a cheeky contemporary rom-com that captures all the frustration and bravery of a perfectionist who finally decides to throw caution to the wind.

Nothing surprises Ana Karina, who has meticulously produced the last eight seasons of a surprise proposal reality show, designed to capture the heartwarming moment when real-life couples get engaged on camera. But Ana’s personal life is less than perfect and while she wants to have her own happily-ever-after moment, she hasn’t found the right guy. So, in a bid to change up her life Ana agrees to date multiple guys at once, leading to hilariously predictable consequences. Meanwhile, Ana’s new editor, Richard, ticks all the boxes on her “What to Avoid” list, but he sees her for who she is and reaches out in her time of need. Now Ana is discovering that her ideal guy isn’t perfect either, but he could be perfect for her.

Genuine dialogue and excellent secondary characters combined with tight pacing makes this chaste romance, with a hint of spice, a true standout.

I actually really was enjoying this book as far as Ana’s exploration of her love life and facing her own insecurities in the love area go. But the actual love story felt very weak and lacked time spent on it. I wanted to see more of Ana and Richard together navigating their feelings for each other.

It's rather unfortunate to have to start this review by saying that I DNFed this one at 61%. I tried, really tried.

I didn't know what I was expecting when I requested this book, but when I saw the pitch as 'fans of Abby Jimenez', I knew I had to get my hands on this.

Sadly, this wasn't for me. I just couldn't connect with the main character, Ana, or with any of them. I can't get behind her choices and shenanigans that I realized I'm just not having fun anymore and wasting my time struggling through this book.

Still, thank you to Forever Publishing, NetGalley and the author for my early copy. All opinions are honest and my own.

Ana Takes Manhattan was a cute, fun read, but I expected more NYC love! I loved the behind-the-scenes look at producing a reality TV show and the slow-burn romance between Ana and her eventual love interest. Ana's dating exploits were quite funny as well, although I certainly was cringing on her behalf at some of the situations she found herself in.

I really don't understand why Ana was still friends with Gia--what an awful person! I was disappointed that there wasn't more resolution on that front, either a change of heart from Gia or preferably a "why am I keeping this person in my life" realization from Ana. I don't think Gia's scenes added much to the book besides confusion.

I loved Ana's eventual HEA and wish we saw more of those two characters together!

This is definitely an author I'll be keeping an eye on.

Audio Review: I love an audiobook with sound effects! It made this such a fun listen. The narrator hit it out of the park.

4.5 stars. Ooh this was so good! Her being obsessed with a guy she had never met, dating four different guys because each one checked off a different point on her “perfect guy” list, it was hilariously messy and so much fun. I loved the reluctant coworkers to lovers (once they were no longer working together) which I haven’t read all that often. It was like The Hating Game but better.

I didn’t, however, understand why we heard so much about her doorman, just for it to lead up to nothing…

3.5 rounded up because the narration was perfection! Cute story that would have been just ok but the narrator really made it fun and enjoyable. I didn't hate it but comparing to Abby Jimenez and Alexis Daria set a seriously high bar that it just didn't live up to.

This was such a refreshing read for me. Very light hearted romance. Something I really needed! Ana was super relatable and a breath of fresh air. I literally love the list she makes. Very likeable protagonist . I love the Latina representation in this book and it’s even better that it’s written by a Latina. I’ve come across so many authors that are not of Latina background trying to write about characters they have no ties to, annd it never works. Ana’s inner dialogue was hilarious. I found myself laughing out loud several times. It took a minute to get into, BUT please be patient, it’s so worth it! I had seen some said the characters were bleh, but I think that opinion is easy to form in the beginning, the start is slow, just hang on!

I will say that I could not stand Gia at all. Worst friend and person ever. Just selfish and dishonest imo. But she didn’t ruin the book for me!

I had high hopes for this book, but unfortunately it just wasn’t what I thought it was going to be. At first, I really liked the main character, Ana. She seemed quirky and relatable in all the right ways, and reminded me of Jess from New Girl and Mindy from the Mindy Project. I also liked that it was set in New York City, and I liked any time the city was referenced throughout the book.
The plot, however, seemed to really be all over the place and chaotic (not in the best way). I had a hard time following the story which ultimately led me just not to care about what was happening. We were following her relationship drama which involved 4 separate interests…, her work drama which was confusing to me for some reason, and drama with her best friend’s wedding. It lacked a strong focus and felt like all 3 of these storylines were fighting to be the main one with none of them being the clear winner. Additionally I don’t think Ana’s character has any character development and in fact she seemed much different at the end and not in a good way. Speaking of the end, it was very abrupt and sudden. The middle part of the book dragged on and on only for the end to not really resolve anything.
I will say that I really love this cover though!!

As a reality TV producer, Ana Karina orchestrates extravagant marriage proposals for over-the-top reality TV shows. If only she could get the rest of her life to come together!

This is the debut novel for Cuban American author Lisette Decos. I liked the main character's list making and nods to her Latina heritage. I also enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look into the TV show pitches and all the set up that goes into building her shows.

For me, the exploration into her dating life was not as successful. I felt like there were too many unnecessary, superficial interactions that didn't really move the story along very well. I read more historical romance than contemporary, so I was really missing the deeper connections between characters. I didn't feel like any of the characters were fleshed out enough.

You might like this book if you're interested in more situational stories than romance. If you like single girl-in-the-city type books with some laughs, it might be for you.

Ana orchestrates extravagant marriage proposals for a reality TV show she produces in New York City.

She’s told she’s too picky about potential romantic partners (and she’s got the lists of required qualities to prove it), so she throws caution to the wind and begins dating four men.
Chaos ensues.

I guess I was expecting more romance, but I would call this one women’s fiction. Even though there were half-baked romances throughout, they seemed very surface level.
I think the story had too much going on and would've been better with more of the actual love interest, more of her family and Cuban culture, and without the toxic best friend.
I hoped for more personal growth within the characters by the end. They all felt underdeveloped and were hard to connect to.

However, I did enjoy the humorous and heartwarming moments; there were definitely a few times I laughed out loud.

The writing was great, and for that reason I'd definitely check out more by this author.

Thanks to Forever and Netgalley for the advance e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
