The secret ingredient is teasing! Nishikata and Takagi-san's series of contests continues around the school through cooking and cleaning, so when Takagi-san asks him to meet her around back—wait, she couldn't possibly be confessing to him, right!?
Sōichirō Yamamoto (山本崇一朗, Yamamoto Sōichirō) is a Japanese manga artist. He is known for writing and illustrating Teasing Master Takagi-san and Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru. Both series have been published in Monthly Shōnen Sunday and Weekly Shōnen Magazine, respectively.
Look, Soichiro Yamamoto knows one thing really well and it’s pulverizing a premise until it is wafer thin. Much like When Will Ayumu Make His Move?, this is the same basic beat hammered over and over again.
What’s annoying is that he’s really good at it. The quality of these titles varies from volume to volume and with what I’m up for at a given moment, but I rarely come out of them thinking that my time has been wasted.
For me, speaking from the minority, I much prefer his other big series, but this one is just fine. Nishikata messes up, Takagi teases him, she likes him in that way, he won’t admit anything, the dance goes on.
The cooking chapter that opens this one up is the best one because it draws in a lot of the side characters. My favourite line comes when a dubious non-romance has somebody trying to manipulate the situation to get the vegetables washed.
That chapter has the most heart and feels the freshest of the bunch. The rest are your usual mishmash with a side order of hodgepodge that have the same structure and are more or less amusing depending on the moment.
This series genuinely alters itself so little that these reviews are largely just my own stubborn need to say something about everything, but I do think that can be both a detriment and a curse at the same time.
3 stars - no, seriously, it’s fun. If this is the sort of thing you’ve enjoyed this far, you won’t have any big issues here.
When I first started this series, I really enjoyed it. It was cute and had some good, wholesome, funny moments. The series is now on volume 16, and it is exactly the same as the first, all be it with a few extra characters. There has been no real development between their relationship, I have hung on to now cause the reads have still been good but this time I was a little annoyed about the lack of progress, I really hope there will be some soon!
