Anis and Euphie are up against a dragon, one of the apex predators of the world. Even with all her wit and her dearest companion at her side, does Anis have a hope against this beast? But then the real danger rears its head - the obligations of medieval society.

Your per volume reminder that this is one of the best illustrated manga being made right now. It’s not crazy stylized or anything, it’s just perfect, gorgeous linework from a mangaka who clearly knows what they’re doing. Absolutely every panel is feeding my eyeballs with happiness.

What makes a good yuri? There are many things, but one of them, for me, is ‘story that would be really good if there wasn’t any yuri in it’ and this is an isekai that I can get behind because Anis is such an amazing character. Who happens to have another girl offering to stand by her side.

Anis’ hunger for research materials seems to be the root of her desire to slay the dragon, but we soon realize that there’s more selflessness to her than we think. Which, yes, to be expected, but I love the flashbacks that show how she ended up this way. And she knows she did too.

The dragon fight is a classic skirmish of overpower meets overpower, but with the bonus of that gorgeous and easy to follow art. There’s no point where the word ‘huh?’ needs to be uttered and that makes me so very pleased. There’s a clear ebb and flow and one very pregnant pause that just come through loud and clear, which is very important.

Especially when said fight takes up such a large portion of the book. But it pays off in spades when Anis goes to claim her rewards and we get a scene that I won’t spoil but absolutely made this an absolute treat and one of the week’s best reads for me.

For as ridiculous and over the top as this story and its characters can get, it knows it needs to have a heart if it wants to be more than every other isekai out there and, boy, does it. Even better, Euphie might seem to be there to function as the better parts of Anis, but she’s actually more reminding her that those parts exist. It’s a small tweak that really makes the difference.

That scene though, involves no Euphie, but does involve an acknowledgement of the dangers of communication and the real sadness in learning about them after it’s far too late. It’s a belter and one of the most effective things I’ve read in a bit. And a reminder that some things are not relatable even if you do speak the same language.

Phew! The back part of the book largely involves Anis’ recovery and torture at the thought of attending a celebration. I also like Anis a lot because she gets worn to the bone by social engagements and has no taste for political maneuvering.

And, yes, once they mention that Euphie has been teaching her dancing for this event, you can see the yuri-results coming from a yuri-mile away, but it’s still really great and who cares when the result is this cute. These two are good for one another no matter their orientation, so the extra layer is just that.

Obviously Anis runs this book via her sheer energy, but Euphie is given a ton to do as well, which is a great touch. They’re a team that works best together and they’re both warming to the idea. Yeah, the idiot prince is on the sidelines, but he deserves a time out anyway.

5 stars - 4 stars for the most part, but the amazing moment post-dragon fight gets it an easy bump up to the full 5 this time. It doesn’t have the usual abundance of laughs this time, merely some chuckles, but this shows how well this story hits all the right notes for me even without it.

I guess part 3 out of four in adapting the first novel. Again, what I said about vol 1 stands.

This volume was mostly just boring—I feel like it was 80% battle manga, and didn’t really answer any of the plot questions.

The battle with a dragon?! Was so good! Then the aftermath back to the humour! I really am loving this series!
