A Night to Remember

Rate this book
Listening Length 3 hours and 25 minutes

Poppy Pullman has her life all planned out. Her social media is carefully curated. Her list of extracurriculars is flawless. All so she can achieve her ultimate goal: Stanford. Her best friends say she’s missing out. But Poppy’s playing a long game. And the morning of her Stanford alumni interview, she’s positive everything is going to work out.

But…

Then she wakes up, the morning after her alumni interview, with a bump on her head and absolutely no memory of the last 24 hours. And it was apparently a really eventful 24 hours?

There’s a St. Bernard in the kitchen. There’s a shirtless Italian exchange student in the den. And worst of all, she’s locked out of her Instagram. Which the alumni interviewer needs to access…or her Stanford acceptance is in jeopardy.

So Poppy – with help from her friends – has to race against the clock. They have to figure out what happened, in hopes of unlocking her Instagram account. But with every answer they get, more questions remain. Why did she get a haircut and a new wardrobe? How does Jonah, the cute barista, fit into this? And what made this type-A planner finally decide to throw caution to the wind?

Because as Poppy follows the clues, she realizes she had more fun in the last 24 hours than she’s had in the past 18 years. And she’s starting to think that sometimes, the most life-changing days… are the ones you never saw coming.

Morgan Matson grew up in New York City and Greenwich, Connecticut. She attended Occidental College in Los Angeles but halfway though a theater degree, she started working in the children's department of Vroman's Bookstore and fell in love with YA literature.

Following college graduation (and the proud bearer of an incredibly useful theater/English degree) she moved back East to attend the New School, where she received her M.F.A in Writing for Children.

Amy & Roger's Epic Detour, inspired by Morgan's three cross-country road trips, was published in May 2010. It was named an ALA Top Ten Best Book, a PW "Flying Start" book, and was shortlisted for the Waterstone's Book Prize.

In the meantime, Morgan moved back to California, went back to school again and in 2011 received an M.F.A. in Screenwriting from the University of Southern California.

Her second book, Second Chance Summer, was published in May 2012 and draws largely on her experiences spending summers growing up in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.

Her third book, Since You've Been Gone, was published in 2014.

Morgan currently lives in Los Angeles, though she loves to travel and does it whenever she can. She is currently writing another book, to be published in 2016.

well, that was certainly a night to remember ..
The story is about Poppy who wanted to get into Stanford University all her life, and now its the day of her interview .. and that was the last thing she remembers before she wakes up the next day having no idea what happened in the last 24 hours!! she has 5 hours to unlock the mystery of what happened yesterday so she can still salvage what left of her resume to enter Stanford .. this will lead to an adventure of a lifetime
I LOVE Morgan Matson, something about her writing style always get to me and makes me laugh .. my only complaint is that I wish if Jonah had more of a role in the story .. really recommend this for a nice short read

I’m not the biggest fan of audiobooks, but when I saw that one of my favorite YA contemporary authors, Morgan Matson, released an audiobook only, I figured I had to listen to it.

This was really cute and had a lot of character growth, which is what I have come to expect from this author. Even though it’s fairly short (the audiobook was only about 3.5 hours) the story never felt rushed or underdeveloped. It was really well written and I liked watching Poppy piece together what happened. The story was a bit predictable, but I really liked seeing everything come together.

This. Was. So. Dang. CUTE!!

So of course Matson is the Queen of YA and this cute little short story proves just that. I loved Poppy and her crazy adventure of putting all the puzzle pieces together of her crazy night of her living her best life. I could’ve done a full length novel of this. It was refreshing and original.

I'll always read Morgan Matson. This novella was such a fun ride! It leans more towards Save The Date and Take Me Home Tonight crazy situations so it made me laugh a lot.

This would be perfect rom-com teen movie

This was so fun! I've read eight of Morgan Matson's works, and this was essentially Matson-branded "The Hangover." I actually watched "The Hangover 2" earlier this month (without ever seeing the first one lol), so it felt fitting to listen to this.

I'm new to the audiobook sphere, but I thought the narrator did a great job. She really brought life to the characters with her different voices.

Story: 3.5 stars
Audio: 4 stars
Narrator: Laura Knight Keatin

A funny short story, just a bit far-fetched, about a high school senior who sees all her well thought out plans for the future fly out the window after a wild night she can't remember.
Great second characters, pace and plot.

Just like any Morgan Matson book, this one delivers with the summer vibes (even though it took place in January, thanks to its California setting), great characters, and cuteness! There’s not much to say since this is a 3 hour long audiobook, but I thought it was the perfect way to occupy my afternoon. It’s fun, clever, and engaging, and was just the perfect amount of goodness.

Even though it’s short, Morgan Matson is able to characterize her characters effectively, giving the MC a full arc before the story ends. This was really impressive to me! I found parts of her narrative a little unrealistic (all of her phone/social media passwords relate to Stanford, her dream college [which of course is Stanford], amongst other things that I’m not going to share because of spoilers), but it’s okay. I didn’t really mind that much. Needless to say, I can’t wait for Morgan’s next book!

☞ 4 stars (really liked it)

Fun YA version of the hangover with an uptight girl piecing together the night she let loose. It was the perfect length for a summer read.

"It was a little crazy just how much could change over the course of a night"

Poppy Pullman is a meticulous planner with her sights set on Stanford University. Her social media and extracurricular activities are carefully curated to ensure a flawless application. Her friends may think she's missing out on life, but Poppy believes she's playing the long game. On the morning of her crucial Stanford alumni interview, Poppy is confident that everything will fall into place. However, her world takes an unexpected turn when she wakes up the next day with a bump on her head and no memory of the previous 24 hours- an evidently eventful period. She unravels the mystery with the help of her friends, Poppy discovers a St.Bernard in her kitchen, a shirtless Italian exchange student in her den, and worst of all, she's locked out of her Instagram. To complicate matters, her Stanford acceptance hinges on accessing that very account. Now, Poppy and her friends must race against time to piece together the events leading to her memory loss. Every answer they uncover raises more questions. Why did she get a haircut and a new wardrobe? How does Jonah, the cute barista, fit into the puzzle? What prompted this type-A planner to throw caution to the wind? As Poppy follows the clues, she realizes that the last 24 hours brought more joy and excitement that the past 18 years combined. She discovers that sometimes, the most life-changing days are the ones you never saw coming.

This was such and cute and short novella to listen to on my drive back to my university. It was my first audiobook and I thought I would not I could not get into it because I am a visual learner and preferably like reading physical copies of books. But honestly...it surprised me and got me hooked right away that I listened to it in one sitting (the total time of this book is 3hrs 24min). I felt like I related to Poppy in some ways of always trying to impress a parent and want to follow in their footsteps. For me, I knew I wanted to make both of my parents proud and see all the achievements that their daughter has accomplished. In Poppy's situation, she wanted to impress her father but going to his aluma mater (Stanford), that sometimes she forgets to live her life a little. I am kind of glad that even though she lost her memory for a bit, she got to experience what it was like to live life and have fun. The reason why I give it 4 stars, is that even though I loved the storyline, one of the characters annoyed me to no end.

I would recommend this audiobook/novella to anyone looking to listen and enjoy a short book. In my perspective, it is the YA version of the hangover and has funny moments of truly finding the real you in the sea of same people. With hilarious hijinks, stolen dogs, exchange students and cute romance, this novella will have you hooked from the very moment you start it. The next book I am going to read is The Firefly Summer by Morgan Matson

I had no idea this book even existed. I love Morgan Matson so I decided to pick this up on a whim. Overall, it was fine? The writing style was very telling and some plot points were a bit ridiculous/had to suspend my disbelief. I also think the love interest didn't really have any development whatsoever and I kept waiting to hear details about what happened that night together...only to be left hanging at the end. However, I did like the messages about being true to yourself and not rushing through life.

This was my first Audiobook and definitely won’t be my last! It was such a quick and fun story that, in true Morgan Matson fashion, still had depth and a great meaning. It also felt like an early 2000’s teen movie which I loved!! She truly has a way with writing characters that have a great sense of relatability to them. Not to mention the awesome friend groups and swoon worthy love interests! I’d really love to revisit the world of Crystal Cove and this whole crew in a full length book someday!

This was surprisingly enjoyable. I only recently re-read Matson's contemporary YA novels and discovered that my feelings on those books had changed quite a bit. I was actually debating whether or not to even read this but I'm glad that I gave it a chance.

A novella was just the right length for the story as any longer and it would've felt too dragged out. The plot was predictable, while the amnesia thing was a bit weird and seemed a little far fetched. However I liked seeing the character growth in Poppy as she is finally able to start living her life for herself.

A cute novella from Matson that shows me that her books (even short ones) are usually more than your usual contemporary romance. The main character is struggling with perfection so she can get into Stanford and after getting bad news she ends up going crazy for one night, only to wake up and not remember any of it. It was like The Hangover for YA.

I cannot believe I had been putting this off for so, so long. I’m not a big audiobook person, but this one was such a sweet little listen. I enjoyed Poppy figuring out how and why she woke up one more a completely different person, and how her friends helped her recover the missing pieces of that story. Kiki was cute and added that little smart aleckness i also love in a MM story. All around 4 stars.

3 stars, but I could relate to Poppy's stance on hair straightening, which amused me greatly. Choosing to straighten curly hair daily is a personality trait. And, of course, the "live your life" theme is a good one. I just wasn't wowed by these characters.

A cute story! Morgan Matson was my absolute favorite author as a teen and I would’ve eaten this story up when I was younger! It’s a bit too cliché, now, but I can appreciate a lot of what she was trying to get across in her writing

Reminded me of the quote: “If you don’t schedule system maintenance, your system will schedule it for you.” Overachiever Stanford-obsessed Poppy did not schedule her self maintenance & it got FORCIBLY scheduled, lol. A classic MM — a humorous, fun, & heartfelt adventure
