I loved Lucifer and Lionel sooo freakin much! Their story kept me engaged, I’m invested in their lives! If you haven’t read the previous books in the story line, do that first. This isn’t a standalone. Lucy reveals a secret to Nellie, they need to confront those feelings and deal with Marc. The Devil’s Wings felt like and ending and a beginning. Overall, a fantastic story, well written and a nice pacing that just flowed so good! Highly recommend.
The Devil's Wings feels like the end of a chapter for Lionel and Lucy with Nelly accepting his place in Lucy's life.
It isnt the end of the series though and I'm glad of that, especially because of where it is left off. Not a cliffhanger as such but very much the start of a new storyline for Lucy and Nelly.
I love Lucifer and Lionel together. The two of them as a couple are something powerful and I think this will be important going forward.
A good dose of steam and a lot of sweet, loving moments. Each of the characters have come into their own.
There will be 6 books in the series, so 2 more to go. Cant wait.
And this was the book I thought I was waiting for in this series…Sorta. Mostly. Confused? Don’t worry. I’ll explain below.
This is listed as book 4 in the series and you can see an abrupt change here right from the beginning. Nelly is no longer stand offish. He still has his doubts, but it seems he’s surer of the relationship, despite the bombshell of hurt and confusion Lucy drops on him about his wings. It seems something happened on their shared Winter vacation. Something that made them grow closer, and Nelly more confident where he stood with the Devil. Repeatedly, there are allusions made about this vacation, and you get the impression it was very important to this installment. Which it is. Very very important.
I’m going to stop here. Because I didn’t figure out what I was missing until I started reading The Devil’s Saturnalia. I whizzed through both books 4 and 5. Because they were that good. I think I got them both done in one night. Who needs sleep? Book 5, it turns out, is the end of the series. Although I hope there will be more at some point because I just started to adore these two MCs as well as all the supporting characters. Book 6 should actually be 3.5. It’s the Winter vacation that changes the tone for the rest of the books. I’m in the middle of it now and I can see just how pivotal it is to the rest of the series. I do wish the order would be changed in KU and GR to reflect this.
Anywho, back to this book. In the foreword of book 5, the author states she didn’t know where this story would lead but she did now. And book 4 does a good job of moving things forward (Nelly’s powers, the plot and subplots, Nelly/Lucy’s relationship).
It’s fun where it needs to be: “Eris was like gonorrhea, so no fun to get over, and all you wanted was a good long shower after she was gone for good.”
And achingly lovely too: “He said my name not like a simple form of address, but like a plea and a secret spell, like a casting into the future and something that had come to fruition on the bones of the past.” SWOON.
A solid 4. If not a bit higher. I marked it as having a cliffhanger, although its a soft one. So more like a HFN with a twist.
Again it just kind of ends when things are happening. I don't know that you would call this a cliff hanger so much as just "too much happening to fit in one book and I couldn't decide where to end it so I just did". At least it had that feel to it. Like Piper was plugging away and decided the length was too long so didn't bother really resolving anything and just cut off the book wherever that page number landed. I appreciate that she didn't try and rush an ending but seriously it actually IS possible to end a book in a series with an ongoing plot arc without just stopping mid dialogue.
Also, another super irritating thing about this book was an abundance of references to off page stuff. Is there another story somewhere that I missed? Its okay to do that a little but this was insane. Just loads and loads of stuff happening " over the holidays" that get mentioned for almost no real reason except to confuse the crap out of the person reading the book. Is there a holiday novella out there I missed? Included is one chapter of a holiday sex scene about Lucy giving him a feather. Just confused in a way that makes me feel very apathetic to the rest of the series. Like I was loving it and then all this happened and now im not sure anymore.
Mostly enjoyed the book. Glad Lucy and Nelly are talking and developing their relationship. Still an interesting plot I guess but this book seemed to mostly be about setting up the next book. Like, half the book was focused on strengthening their relationship, and the other half was just setting up the next book. All while peppering in a lot of stuff that we never get to see, only vaguely hear about.
Still reccomend this series but I first reccomend looking for an accompanying novella because maybe I'm just blind and stupid.
‘I wanted to make him feel good and to show him… He meant so much to me, and when I thought about that too long, it scared me, just like it had when he’d gotten hit with a harpoon bolt. But I wanted him to know that I wouldn’t trade him for a golden apple or any other man, not for any promise or threat. I just didn’t know how to convey any of it. “I know, my love,” he said in his darkest, huskiest voice.‘
My heart beats faster every time I know I will get the chance to spend time with Lucy and Nelly.
As Nelly’s powers continue to manifest, and his life becomes more and more filled with danger, Lucy meets these obstacles of keeping his Necromancer as safe as he can. And because he IS the devil, he will do everything in his power to prove his love to Nelly.
Nelly, in book 4 of Alexa Piper’s Hellbound series, finds that his fascination with his Devil’s wings will be what he needs to move closer into Lucy’s arms-even as he realizes the inevitable-he loves him, too.
Piper creates a world that is sweet and scintillating, where good and evil are not what they appear to be, and where magic proves that loyalty exists beyond just friendship.
The Devil’s Wings by Alexa Piper continues their plot direction from the previous book in the series. Lionel and Lucifer are still working on their relationship and Lionel’s need to work as a necromancer for the local police. The author takes advantage of having the whole of Greek myths to exploit for bad guys, and good ones too if the plot calls for it. A couple of minor characters get more page time and serve to enrich the story. Without a spoiler, I enjoyed how media adverse Lionel was, especially for a millenial. One major retailer called this a four-book series, but the ending of The Devil’s Wings makes it clear there are more adventures ahead for Lionel and Lucifer, for which I am grateful. I received a free copy of this book from Changeling Press and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Alexa Piper has done it again. This book is not a standalone and should be read in order. I just love Lucy and Nellie. In this book Lucy and Nellie must confront their own feelings after Lucy reveals a secret. They also have to continue to deal with Marc's attempts to get Nellie to choose him. This book feels like an ending and new beginning at the same time. We are left with what I would call a cliffhanger. I can't wait for the next book to see where we are going from here. Any book that can make me laugh and cry out loud is one I would recommend and this one did both.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
brilliant read This is the fourth book in the series and honestly as the story goes on you cannot help but fall for these two honestly how can you fall for the devil but Lucy is just, I don’t know he just so in love with Nelly everything he does I kind of understand. Their relationship is really growing to the point you can’t see where one begins and the other one ends. I’m glad this isn’t the last we gonna hear off these two. They really have become two characters I really enjoy reading.
As this series goes on, I find myself liking and investing in the characters more and more (subtle hint here that this is part of a series, so definitely start at the beginning, if you haven’t already!). This book in particular has plenty to offer, but at its heart is really the continuing evolution of the relationship between Lucifer and Lionel. On one hand, milestones, on the other, complications (because it wouldn’t be Lucy and Nelly without those). I can’t wait to see what happens for them next.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I absolutely love Nelly & Lucy. Their stories get better and better. I enjoy following them as their relationship progresses and as they uncover the things behind the mysteries that occur in each book. I can't wait for more from them.
I love Lucifer and Lionel, and while I've greatly enjoyed their story so far, this book didn't really add something.
I missed the typical things Lucifer says and does that make me smile. The relationship felt less deep, even though the words were there and Lionel seemed more secure in his love for Lucifer. Even their intimate scenes, which I used to live for, seemed less to me.
I felt like I was missing a story or a short because there were references to stuff happening over the holidays, and it was confusing. There was a story gap.
During a crucial point in the story, there is a flashback to the last holidays. Considering the content, I understand why the author has included the flashback there, but it just put me out of the story. I think it would have worked better if the scene of the flashback was added as a prologue, and the prologue starred a bit more of the holidays as well.
For the most part, this story just felt like a bad repeat. - There are more zombies - sorry, revenants - on the beach. - There is a lot of Marc fucking Deacon thinking he still has a chance with Lionel. At this point I'm so irritated by him and Lionel not putting him in his place that I'm going to scream aloud if the author hasn't included some character development for Marc in the upcoming book. There is only so much repetition I can take. I also seriously believe that the whole scene with Lionel taking a break from Lucifer and inviting Marc over, could have been made less cliche. Lionel and Lucifer have been together long enough that Lionel should consider how his actions would affect Lucifer and his relationship. It's what people do in a relationship or when they love each other. What's more, they never really talk about everything that happened, just go on as they were doing before, and I also couldn't believe Lionel was suddenly fine with touching Lucifer's wings again. - There is magical stuff like with the labyrinth, and a cliffhanger much like the one we've seen before.
But the thing that got me the most, was that Soul was practically missing from the story, and I never thought I would miss her, but I do. I feel nostalgic for the previous books.
Lionel Hawkes, a necromancer and demigod, works as consultant for the Brunswick Police Department. Ready to return to work after a long holiday break, he has another necromancer to train, but Lucy enjoys keeping him occupied instead. At the office, before Marc Deacon and Lucy could get into an argument over buying coffee and donuts for Lionel, the boss told them they were headed to the beach to deal with at least a dozen corpses. Vacation was definitely over.
The corpse Lionel woke to question did not answer with her name as he asked. That was very unusual. Instead, she said, “They will rise and end again what needs to begin anew.” Then Marc was being choked by the corpse he was working on and as Lionel broke the revenant bond that tied it to the artifact controlling it and making it move, all of the other corpses started moving as well and chaos erupted! The corpses went after the crime scene investigators and one went after Lionel. Marc saw that and put himself between the revenant and Lionel who was helping the crime scene techs. So Lucy used magic to bind them to the sand instead. With two revenants attacking Marc, Lucy knew Marc’s magic wasn’t strong enough against this well-made revenant magic, so he threw one of them off of Marc onto the sand to bind it there with the others. Lucy felt Lionel’s strong necromancer magic now joined by his demigod magic. When things were quiet again, Lionel used his necromancer magic to begin backtracking the revenant binding to the source and Lucy retrieved it from under the water. Oddly the object had held the revenant magic for 3,762 years. This case has truly turned into a mystery. And what secrets is Lucy keeping that he needs to tell Lionel?
Alexa Piper has done it again. I was having a tough week, and I needed something to cheer me up. Every book in the Hellbound series has been uplifting and given me something to look forward to. I am one of those dreadfully morbid people who appreciates a story that starts out with at least one dead body. Books about necromancers are usually on the must read list. This time I had plenty of dead bodies to read about. I also had the pleasure of reading about Lucy digging his way out of trouble with Nelly again. I appreciate how well the author writes about incredibly dark subjects but still creates a lighter atmosphere in all the right places. The relationship between Lionel and Lucifer is a bit like a flashlight in the woods. The scary stuff is all around, but the flashlight is a nice shining beacon to attract trouble. Anyway...
Another great read. Already started on the next one. Can't wait for more stories about this world even if they don't center on Lucifer and Lionel.
The Devil's Wings was absolutely rivetingly beautiful. Yes I had to create my own word to describe the perfection that is this story and the entire series of Hellbound. Lucy is so incredibly romantic. And Nelly and the rest of the supporting characters are hilarious!
It seems the author, Alexa Piper, just writes all my favorite tropes and comes up with plots that I've been seeking. In the Devil's Wings we had Marc who persistently pursued Nelly despite knowing that it's unrequited and Lucy is quite possessive of Nelly. In addition, he's going up against the Devil while he's human with lackluster magic. I really enjoyed this narrative arc and I want more like this!
Alexa Piper is such a fantastic author! Her stories are just perfection! I just want more of Lucy and Nelly, like all the time.
Lionel and Lucy have more mysteries to solve and has a golden apple involved this time and how does it connect to a boat full of people or is it something else or someone else involved, as the story goes on you learn more information about Lionel and his parents.
Lionel gets into his magic more and even getting stronger.
Lionel’s relationship with Lucy improves and they have more tender moments between the two and some laughter.
Baby critters born of three headed dog and cursed poodle hellhound are different, but cute. Repeat immortal visits plus new evil with a golden apple to replicate the beach situation with animated corpses. Nelly gains better control as Lucy struggles for control. Marc is a distraction and the police are not sure what to think or who to expect.
A fun and fantastic read!! I just can not get enough of Nelly and Lucy! This is book 4 in the series, and can not be read as a standalone. Lucy tells Nelly a secret, and these two have to deal with how they feel about each other. Another intriguing mystery to solve and great storyline. I love seeing the relationship growth between Nelly and Lucy as their story progresses.
The story, plot, twists, and turns continue to keep me invested in the series. I enjoy the author's writing style and how the world continues to expand. I'm not ready for the series to end.
