Todd McFarlane is a Canadian comic book artist, writer, toy manufacturer/designer, and media entrepreneur who is best known as the creator of the epic occult fantasy series Spawn.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, McFarlane became a comic book superstar due to his work on Marvel Comics' Spider-Man franchise. In 1992, he helped form Image Comics, pulling the occult anti-hero character Spawn from his high school portfolio and updating him for the 1990s. Spawn was one of America's most popular heroes in the 1990's and encouraged a trend in creator-owned comic book properties.
In recent years, McFarlane has illustrated comic books less often, focusing on entrepreneurial efforts, such as McFarlane Toys and Todd McFarlane Entertainment, a film and animation studio.
In September, 2006, it was announced that McFarlane will be the Art Director of the newly formed 38 Studios, formerly Green Monster Games, founded by Curt Schilling.
McFarlane used to be co-owner of National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers but sold his shares to Daryl Katz. He's also a high-profile collector of history-making baseballs.
Having read the first installment of Spawn in 1993, was released in 1992 in the US, somewhat of an experience I really enjoyed. Even if I only read the comic because the McFarlane art on Spider-Man was something that dragged me back to that title. With Spawn I always stayed on board even if McFarlane has been writing more and drawing less.
This comic containing #298-#301 is the gamechanger for the Spawn universe and the battle of Spawn versus Hell and Heaven comes to full blows.
The art is amazing and there is still a lot of live left in the corpse of one Al Simmons.
Mostly the same level of mediocrity I’ve come to expect from Spawn, but the actual issue #300 is straight up awesome. Also, a wide variety of awesome guest artists are in here, including my boy Clayton Craine.
Spawn is what it is, and you either like it despite how much it blows because of nostalgia (like me) or you rightfully ignore it and read better stuff. Either way, there are some thrills to be had here, albeit very few
I hadn't read Spawn in a while, so I had to do some catching up when I first started this one, but I was able to get on track pretty quickly. I've read every issue of Spawn so it was good to see things come sort of full circle with many of the original characters showing back up. Art was great, story was good too. I am curious to see where the story is going because some big changes seem to be in the works in the Spawn Universe.
I'm starting to feel I missed the boat on Spawn, especially written by the Todd Father. That guy is a hell of a artist and action figure maker, but his writing leaves a lot to be desired.
I ended up skimming a lot of dialogue in this book, the only true stand out moment that made me take notice was the big clock countdown climax in 300, cuz that was something people always told me about. The moment itself was badass. Otherwise, the plot left me wanting, and has a hard time keeping me paying attention. I don't know if I wanna stop here or try one more vol. Congrats to Todd for the milestone, but his story isn't standing out in the current landscape
This was actually pretty solid. The status quo changes for Spawn as he goes after heaven and hell. The one thing I would have liked more is a little uncertainty. Spawn is so confident that everything will work out that it sucks some of the drama out of it. He's certain he can defeat both sides even though no Spawn ever has. I am curious about the outcome of this and some of the new titles that are spinning out of it.
