Heart of the Scorpion

"Would you like to come to Greece?"

Annabel had thought Ran was joking when he asked her.

Although his younger brother, Kit, had been her companion since childhood, it was Ran--reserved, clever, complex--she'd grown up loving. Not that anyone knew it, of course.

It was a dream holiday. But in the hot Greek sunshine, Annabel's dream shattered.

Ran was involved with someone else--and Annabel knew she'd hidden her feelings far too long.

Worth reading, although there is nothing truly new about it. The OW took up too much page space, and the two lead characters had every misunderstanding possible, but I believed H was genuinely in love with her.

The blurb does a good job outlining the issues in this story. Heroine has loved hero from afar since she was a little girl. For years she hung around with his spoiled younger brother and showed nothing but bratty hostility to the hero. When spoiled younger brother promises a trip to Greece and then reneges on it, hero takes the heroine instead.

It's one misunderstanding after another with an OW thrown in to keep the heroine guessing. Hero is a nice guy and obviously smitten.

Full disclosure: I read this last month, so I’m having trouble remembering details.

Written in the first person, I found the h’s perspective rather tedious, and the story itself didn’t engage me. I can’t pinpoint anything particularly objectionable, (yes, it’s formulaic with silly “misunderstandings”, like most vintage HRs), but getting through the book was a slough. Perhaps it was because my recurring thought while reading this was, oh for f***’s sake, just be honest and tell the H (along with everyone else) you’re not interested in his brother.

LOL, this was the very first Harlequin Romance I read at age 15 and made me a fan of Harlequin and Silhouette Romance for the next 15 years until I moved on to other genres. Innocent writing vs the near porn you read today, I remember if fondly and still have my copy all these years later. Maybe it's a time for a reread of another era.
