Dance the Tide: A Modern Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
The higher the wall around your heart, the harder you fall when someone knocks it down.

Wealthy businessman Will Darcy is fiercely protective of his privacy and his family. When his sister is the victim of a violent crime, he takes her away from Boston to their Cape Cod beach house, where he hopes she can heal in peace—and he can restore his equilibrium.

Ecohydrologist Elizabeth Bennet is happily residing in the seaside town where she grew up. Her career, friends, and family keep her busy, allowing her to avoid any romantic entanglements—as those only lead to heartbreak.

A brief encounter on the beach between Elizabeth and Will leads to misunderstandings and lousy first impressions. They go their separate ways, confident they’ll never see each other again. But fate has other plans when Will turns out to be the best friend of her sister’s boyfriend.

When they meet again under more favorable circumstances, Will soon realizes his initial impressions of Elizabeth were unfounded—and really, her eyes are magnificent. And with some dedicated effort, Elizabeth begins to see a different man—the real Will—buried beneath his arrogant, reticent façade.

Romance blossoms as Elizabeth struggles to conquer her insecurities and Will works to overcome his distrust. But every relationship occasionally finds itself in rough waters, and greater forces can tug a couple under the waves. For their love to triumph, Will and Elizabeth will need to have faith in one another, move beyond their fears…and dare to dance the tide.

Cat Andrews has always been an avid reader, but didn’t discover Jane Austen until her love of a certain British actor led her to the BBC’s 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice. Her discovery of Jane Austen Fan Fiction opened up a whole new world, and she was inspired to begin a cautious but earnest foray into the world of writing.

In real life, Cat has spent thirty-eight years working in healthcare. She enjoys life on the shores of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and more often than not, you can find her at the beach with a book in her hand and her toes in the sand.

Outstanding Modern JAFF
As in her previous two successful and well-received novels, Sanctuary and An Unexpected Harvest, Cat Andrews transports you to another picturesque location. This time on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and in Boston, Massachusetts and, once again takes me down my own personal memory lane (I grew up in MA). Expertly writing what she knows, you’re drawn into the beautifully scenic surroundings of the renowned Cape. It’s there William Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet first meet in a challenging confrontation. You’re also immediately drawn into the plot, because right from the beginning, even though they will find love, there is an undercurrent of just knowing right at the start, something bad will happen and it won’t be good for our favourite couple.

Will and Lizzy both have trust issues which are revealed as the story progresses. They cause conflict and strife—mostly instigated by the actions of others—and just as the walls are being torn down and they begin to trust, will one conflict in particular cause Darcy to greatly jeopardize this once, almost perfect, blossoming relationship?

It’s extremely difficult for me to put into words how much I love the way Ms. Andrews makes me love this couple so fervently. As an author, she is unique in doing that for me. Yes, I love other authors’ interpretations of ODC too, and some are exceptional, but there’s always just something I can’t yet name that completely draws me to them wholly and completely—right into my heart just as they seem to do so themselves in each of her books. The emotional “feels” I get when reading Ms. Andrews’ Darcy and Elizabeth are just extra special to me.

All the essentials for a great contemporary novel are perfectly bound within the covers of this modern Pride and Prejudice variation—brilliant writing and lots of flowing dialogue, a perfect setting, an excellent love story, a criminal sub-plot with moderate angst and vile villains, and, most swoon worthy of all, an especially romantic and musical Darcy—and oh, the passion!

This outstanding book is nothing short of what I’ve come to expect from Cat Andrews, a truly accomplished author of modern JAFF love stories—one of the best I’ve read.

Buckle up! You’re in for a bumpy but ultimately successful ride! I can’t recommend this book highly enough. If you haven’t yet crossed over from Regency to modern JAFF, consider Dance the Tide as your possible first.

Mature, adult content.

I received an ARC with no promise of a review, favorable or otherwise. I also purchased the published version for my Kindle library and plan to get the paperback for my home library.

726 pages on my Kindle. I read this first in its unpublished form in 2017 (Not sure of the exact month and days) so basically knew what to expect. It does have lots of angst (of which I am fond) and lots of graphic sex scenes so be warned.

As stated this is a modern variation but the author also states that it is non-canon. We have many of the same characters, and most are recognizable in their characteristics and behaviors and even in their role in the story. Some are not, i.e., Bill Collins. We have more of Georgiana in this story beyond the cruel manipulation of canon, as in this story she suffers an assault. Charles and Jane are a happy couple in this story without his abandonment. The Bennet only have three daughters, with Jane and Elizabeth being best friends again and Lydia being the spoiled untamed youngest in the family. In this story there comes a time when she learns first hand what Wickham really is all about. She does make some changes which I was happy to read about. Aunt and Uncle Gardiner also have important roles.

The story is set mainly on Cape Cod (where the author lives) but we also have several trips to the west coast, to North Carolina and to Boston and across the waters to Martha's Vineyard.

As the story description hints, there are misunderstandings between Elizabeth and Will Darcy but they are much more consequential than those in canon. Will has trust issues. Some have to do with events (and people) having to do with his sister, Georgiana, and some due to his wealth and status as a handsome bachelor. Then there is the business inherited from his father. And of great significance is the relationship with and advice from his father. In this long book there are many threads woven together.

Elizabeth has in her past a long-term love affair. She was abandoned abruptly and with no explanation by the man she thought loved her. Her insecurities have kept her from forming any attachments much less simply dating for years. Now she is in a successful career and has a creative photography hobby. The story has her hobby playing a significant role.

After the initial "misunderstanding" and finding that they have a connection through Jane and Bingley, Will and Lizzy quickly find themselves falling in love. Some problems occur when separations due to business happen. A woman answering Will's call phone early one morning and some hidden photos are just several things which lend trouble to this romance.

There is lots of discussion about communicating openly and although promises are made, we read of those lines being shut.

One of the threads has Will's cousin also finding romance. However that causes suspicions on Will's part as she also has a position as an aide to Richard. Will she file charges of sexual harassment if the romance goes "south"? Richard and Will argue over that.

And then we have Bill Collins and his cousin. Elizabeth works in a capacity under Bill's supervision. He keeps trying to date her and/or gain her notice. He also has input as to projects she could work on, both on the Cape and then south in the Carolinas. And guess who is Bill's cousin? I am not going to tell you that, but trouble is his "name".

I highly recommend this story although with a MA rating some might not want to read it.

Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Boston feature strongly right alongside a hard-fought romance and darker struggles for their families in this deeply emotional, character-driven modern retelling of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice.

Dance the Tide is a standalone story that opens on a Cape Cod summer beach scene when Elizabeth Bennet, a marine biologist at Wood's Hole and hobby photographer accidentally raises the ire of a man when she uses his and a woman's silhouette in a great beach sunset scene. His arrogance and assumption gets her own dander up so that when she meets Jane's boyfriend's best friend, she is certain that she can never like William Darcy. However, a barbecue for Memorial Day with Charles and Jane has her seeing William Darcy in a new light and guardedly willing to give him a chance.

But as readers of romance know, an early understanding that takes place in the first quarter can only be considered ominous. And, it was for poor Lizzy and William. That relationship went through some rough ups and downs. My heart hurt for this pair. They are both strong and stubborn people who have been hurt and built up defense mechanisms to cope. Mistakes are made and interference happens so that the reader is on pins and needles to see if and how they recover from each hard stumble.

The story is able to develop their characters, their romance, and the interwoven relationships with extended characters with no concern for page count. Lizzy's family situation with her parents, her friendship with Charlotte and her older sister, Jane, and her complicated relationship with spoiled and wild younger sister Lydia are teased out. For William's side, his past with his father and the business, his little sister going through a horrific experience, and his history with people trying to get close in order to use him or attach his wealth give him a brooding, closed off nature. I enjoyed seeing these two people have their stops and starts, but get past each hurdle and grow from the ordeal just as I enjoyed seeing their extended family find their way to happy, too. I admit that while I enjoyed all this, I'm not a huge drama fan so I did have struggles getting through some of it and just wanted them to get past things to the smooth ride. That said, this sexy slow burner does feel triumphant in the end knowing what all they went through to get there.

Speaking of getting through things, trigger warning to those who need it. Georgiana, William's sister does experience sexual assault and a strong theme in the book is the aftermath and judicial dealings with it. This also affects Lizzy's younger sister, too.

One of my favorite reasons to pick up a modern retelling is to see how the author cleverly recreates the original characters and what new setting they are put in. I should also reiterate the warning in the blurb that this isn't a strict retelling. While this does give a strong nod to Austen's story, the author has told a spicy, gritty modern romance and I was much taken with her writing style and her powerful storyline. Dance the Tide was a great summer read that contemporary romance fans should definitely stuff in the book beach tote for an emotional, engaging reading experience.

Completely Swept Away by this Realistic and Hard-Won Romance

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Source: Gift from Author

TYPE OF NOVEL: Modern-Adaptation of Pride and Prejudice

THE PREMISE: Even with their own personal baggage and terrible first impressions, falling in love comes easy for real estate mogul Will Darcy and ecohydrologist Elizabeth Bennet. But what happens when their insecurities and past traumas creep into their idyllic relationship and horrendous mistakes are made? Can their love survive the treacherous seas it faces?

WHAT I LOVED:

- Will and Elizabeth: I always love and adore Cat Andrews’s reiteration of these characters. She portrays them with such a sense of authenticity, and she isn’t afraid to show their baggage and flaws. I love seeing their imperfections, their past issues, and their hang-ups. These are characters that feel deeply real, and I love witnessing their journeys as individuals and as a couple. I appreciate how well-defined and fleshed out Will and Elizabeth are in this tale. A lot of their current feelings are impacted by their past relationships and experiences.

-A Gorgeous Setting: Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, the coastal town of Falmouth – once again Cat Andrews chooses a setting that is brimming with charm, picturesque sunsets, interesting landmarks, and natural beauty. I’ve visited this area as a child, but now I’m so eager to return because I want to see and experience all the beauty of this area for myself! I always appreciate how Cat Andrews highlights the setting and scenery in her stories. It is so much more than just a pretty backdrop.

-Authentic Relationship Hurdles: Is love enough? What happens when someone makes a huge mistake? How can you trust someone again after they already hurt you once before? These are the real and difficult obstacles these characters face. I greatly admire and appreciate how Ms. Andrews features these realistic challenges in relationships. I love witnessing how her characters communicate about their issues, learn to grow from their mistakes, and find inner peace and healing. I especially loved how in this story a character seeks therapy to work through their deep-rooted issues, and how the wonderful benefits of seeking help to deal with emotional and/or mental hurdles are featured in this tale.

-Relationship Themes: To piggy-back on the point made above, I enjoyed that beyond the importance of love, respect, honesty that this story dealt with forgiveness, earning back broken trust, and letting go of control. These relationship themes are real ones people face everyday – whether it be in someone they are dating/married to, a friendship, or even parent or sibling relationship. Cat Andrews’s portrayals of how these characters felt and processed their emotions in these circumstances was just incredibly intuitive, moving, and genuine. She writes with such empathy and understanding.

-Healing: A few secondary storylines in this tale illustrate a character overcoming the pain of abuse or trauma. Whether it is verbal and emotional abuse, or a horrifying incident that occurs at a party. To see characters live through these experiences is heartbreaking and hard. But their journeys towards healing and wholeness are incredibly moving to witness. There were so many steps they took in this journey – with changes made in their lifestyles, with opening up to others in their lives, and with confronting the people who hurt them – their resilience and strength were so inspiring.

WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:

Not. One. Singe. Thing.

NOTE: This story contains uses of profanity and several romantic interludes and intimate scenes. Recommended for Mature Audiences.

WARNING: There is a secondary storyline that deals with non-consent and assault.

CONCLUSION:

Dance the Tide is a wonderfully authentic tale about wading through the challenging and treacherous waters of life. A beautiful Pride and Prejudice homage that doesn’t focus primarily on mistaken pride or overcoming prejudices, but instead brings about a splendidly rewarding tale of healing, deep love, forgiveness, and emotional well-being. I highly recommend!

Outstanding! Much like the tide itself, a dominant motif throughout the book, so does Elizabeth and Will's relationship ebb and flow, sometimes raging, sometimes calm, but always moving. The setting, mainly Cape Cod and Martha's Vine, beautifully complements the slow, steady growth in their interactions, too.

There is a fair amount of angst due to both past relationships and faces from a past better forgotten, yet the resolution makes it all worthwhile.

Highly recommend!

I received an ARC of this book for a fair and honest review.

I used to be a Regency snob. I absolutely loved JAFF variations and vagaries but I just didn’t see how they could really work in the modern era. Then I discovered Melanie Rachel and Cat Andrews. Honestly it is not like you are reading a book. It’s more like you are having a girl’s night and checking in with your friends to see what is going on in their lives lately. Each new book manages to change the story and the characters just enough so that they are unique and their own incarnation. At the same time though the original people and story resonate through it in their own way.

Spoilers ahead:

This story has some seriously dark elements and is full of angst but it’s done so carefully and tenderly that it feels real. You laugh with their joys but oh does your heart hurt for them when they are suffering. Their problems are all so very real and the effort and emotional turmoil feels so intense that you won’t want to stop reading until the very last page. I kept getting interrupted but immediately going right back to the story because I just HAD to know what happened. Any author can make you fall in love with a Character. But it takes a seriously talented author to take you from loving someone to thoroughly HATING them with that same passion. Even harder is to then manage to redeem them in your eyes and make you care about their fate once more is a priceless gift.

I don’t want to spoil the story anymore than I already have. I will say that I don’t even read their blurbs anymore. I just automatically buy the new book and prepare to have a delightful time enjoying a visit with my new friends. So sit back and enjoy the journey. I hope the new books keep appearing for many more years.

Great modern adaptation

As a former resident of Cape Cod, this story was interesting to me because of the memories of my favorite beaches and the fun during the summer. Elizabeth is a scientist at Woods Hole and Darcy is a real estate developer ( huge commercial properties) and both live on the Cape although Darcy's a part time resident.
Many of the same characters are here except the Bennet girls consists of Jane, Elizabeth and Lydia... While Charles only has Caroline who is only seen occasionally. Of course the nasty Wickhams' here causing trouble and destruction in his wake.
Its a well written modern adaptation that hits the important events but focuses mainly on the relationship between the two.

Strap in for a long read with this one. It takes you through all the emotions. At first you feel like you are about to snuggle up in a blankie, then you wanna knock their heads together. THEN you want to beat D's ass and Wicky's ass, and the artist formerly known as Lady Cat, AND Miss Lydia......ugh.

I was not prepared for this angst. But I loved it, absolutely loved it and now have a JAFF book hangover and need to take a break before my next JAFF read.

“We read five words on the first page of a really good novel and we begin to forget that we are reading printed words on a page; we begin to see images.”
― John Champlin Gardner Jr., On Becoming a Novelist

This is true of all of Cat Andrews novels and this one is no exception. Dance the Tide is her third modern Pride and Prejudice offering and it is delightful. She captured my interest on the first page. What I loved:

1)She is proficient at creating characters that seem real. This Darcy and Elizabeth are wonderful. Their personalities are true to cannon, yet they fit in modern times seamlessly. And they are definitely not perfect, chiefly Darcy. He is his forceful, decisive, prideful self. He definitely has his Hunsford moment! And what a moment it is. The dialogue at this point was brilliantly written. My heart broke for him as Elizabeth gave him his set down. (Not that he didn’t deserve it, because I was sufficiently angry with him at this point.) How did she make my heart break for Darcy at the same time I was cheering for Elizabeth to stand up for herself and be the woman I knew she could be? Brilliant!

2)She makes the reader care about every character, even the minor ones. Charlotte, Jane and Bingley are particularly entertaining. But her best minor characters are the settings. She writes the settings as if they are characters in the story. Her descriptions are so interesting that I have to look them up to learn more about them. In her first story (the Sanctuary trilogy), she made me fall in love with Great Diamond Island in Maine. In this one it’s Cape Cod and the charming village of Woods Hole. All of these places are on my bucket list to visit because of her stories.

3) Her dialog is what moves the story along. There are wonderful descriptions, but not too much. She balances the telling of the story and the dialog. It feels like you are listening in on real conversations between real people.

4) Sometimes authors try to squash the cannon Darcy and Elizabeth story into a modern setting and it feels awkward and stiff, like Cinderella’s step sisters fitting into the glass slipper. This novel especially fits the story into modern times like Cinderella slipping her dainty foot into the slipper. It’s perfection. I know it’s listed as non cannon and that is mostly the case, but there are cannon points in this novel and they amazingly work in a modern setting. I’ve read a lot of moderns and this is not easy to do. To paraphrase our dear Jane: I cannot boast of knowing more than half a dozen, in the whole range of my acquaintance, that are really accomplished (in writing modern Pride and Prejudice novels) and Cat Andrews is one of the best of them.

Finally, this is a story set in modern times and is geared toward a mature audience. It’s steamy, but not overly so. However, please don’t skip this one if that is not your thing. It’s easy to skip over the steamier bits. This is a wonderful story at its heart.

Highly recommend! (I was honored to be chosen to receive an ARC of this story with no promise of a review, favorable or otherwise.)

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would! I have read all of Cat Andrews's books and she never fails to disappoint! I have read the original version of Dance the Tide (several times) and was a little apprehensive when she said she had shortened it for publishing. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find it is still amazing! The heart and soul of the story is very much still there along with all my favorite parts.
This story will take you on a journey, as Cat has the talent of writing in such a way that you can't help but feel an emotional connection with the characters. You will experience joy, happiness, and love, along with annoyance, frustration, and sadness ( yes there is a 'bump in the road'). The characters are relatable and I love seeing them overcome their own challenges and evolve. Although Elizabeth and William are the main characters, Cat has not overlooked also taking us on a journey with all the other characters. I especially love Bingley in this book.I always reach the end of this book with warm fuzzies, but with sadness that the book has ended.

I enjoyed this so much. Well written and edited. Made Pride and Prejudice modern in a great way.

One of the best modern adaptations I’ve ever read. I’d recommend it even for people who usually don’t like modern adaptations.

My only quibble is Elizabeth is a passionate environmentalist but the characters are drinking bottles of water all over the place! So easy to make it glasses of water.

I thought this perfectly illustrates the difference in attitude towards parents in Regency times versus today. Elizabeth and Jane were able to cut off contact when it was warranted.

Nice length and epilogue.

Cat Andrews is superb at writing modern, Jane Austen variations. Dance The Tide is her third modern story based on Pride and Prejudice following Sanctuary and An Unexpected Harvest and it's just as good. This one sticks nearer to the original than the other two and we meet a feisty Lizzy Bennet, a spoilt and immature Lydia, a damaged Georgiana and of course, a broody Darcy. Cat Andrews is excellent at placing you right in the story not only with the characters but in her detailed knowledge of the landscape where she sets her stories. I am a Brit and yet I feel I know Portland as if I'd visited it many times and this is what adds depth to her story. In Regency settings, Lizzy and Darcy struggle with the eponymous issues and Cat Andrews has taken that idea and made them into trust issues between the two. When this trust is put to the ultimate test, will they survive? Even though we know they will, Cat Andrews has us invested enough in her creations that we go through all the emotions and ask ourselves, does Darcy really deserve Lizzy? It's a great read, pacy and exciting and will have you hooked from the very first page.

Such an easy book to become enchanted with. Cat uses her special magic with writing to develop our two favorite characters into complex individuals with real layers of depth. You will feel deeply for Elizabeth and appreciate how Darcy develops. Fun, romantic and a book you’ll read over and over.

This is one of my all time favorite JAFF stories and I will read it again and again for years to come. It’s really got a bit of everything: humor, romance, angst, fierce women, a swoony Darcy.

You’ll fall in love with New England as much as you’ll fall in love with Darcy and Elizabeth’s story. Cat’s description of the area makes you yearn to be right there on the beach, ice cream cone in hand.

No spoilers here, it’s just a good love story that will leave you smiling at the close and ready to start it all over.

Note: I received an ARC with not promise of a review, favorable or otherwise.

As a long-time reader of P&P adaptations, I was excited to read this new book from Cat Andrews. Confession - I had previous read this story as it was posted online, but one of the beauties of the tumult of the last few years is that so many things feel fresh & new! I had vague notions of characters and maybe a little plot, but I was happy to keep flipping the pages in what was definitely a page turner for me.

I have enjoyed Cat’s other books, as I prefer to see how P&P can be adapted to the modern context, and Dance the Tide does not disappoint. Her characters come to life as real, not just a little trim and fresh color on tired and true Austen characters. The dance of E & W’s romance plays out over a summer season, and I felt the twists and turns were exciting. I liked that I got to hear what each was thinking at various points along the way - not a one sided view, but one that showed the complexities of trust, vulnerability, and of course, love. While developing along some of the P&P plot points, Andrews puts her own unique spin and her own characterization of two people who have to face their own pride and prejudice to be together.

.
While the romance is the central relationship of the story, I really enjoyed Cat’s exploration of siblings (and almost siblings), not to mention parents. Honest conversations and realistic interactions that you could see happening — or perhaps you have even experienced- are crafted so well by Cat.

I had one tiny disappointment - I do remember that in the posted version, the reader got to see / hear the songs that Will plays & sings. I understand that as a published work, the author has to be concerned with copyright etc and therefore can’t have Will singing them. But I remember feeling just like Lizzy falling under Will’s spell as he sang quietly to her.

Cape Cod, with all its natural beauty and history is an additional character in this book. I swear I could hear the waves lapping at the beach and the wind blowing as I was reading some chapters. Sometimes fading to the background, sometimes a key factor in the lives of E & W, I learned a lot about this area and I’m thinking I need to visit soon. Having never been there though, I did find myself wondering how their paths hadn’t crossed before?. The descriptions of where they exist is helpful but I’m a visual learner & a map nerd, I’m going to have to pull out the map to completely understand how geography plays into it. 😜For the sake of my reading enjoyment and others, I am glad that E & W had not meet before so that we as readers can come along with Cat Andrews as her tale unfolds! Cheers

Intelligent and emotional

Having read this when it was originally posted on A Happy Assembly, I was delighted to see it published. It even inspired me to work out the new system of purchasing, which I'd given up on previously.

This is a story that manages drama and tension without falling into melodrama. The characters are also self-reflexive, not only examining their actions and responses, but working to change, grow and trust. Highly recommended.

As a fan of Pride and Prejudice, this was a good modern retelling. The main issue I had was with the length. Knowing the original and guessing correctly at this story’s trajectory, it was a slog half the time to get through. Cut half the story and call it good.

Great modern variation

I've read the book twice. Truly enjoyed it both times. The character development is lovely. A couple of villains but the angst isn't extreme. Some wonderful fluff. I appreciate Cat's work. I think you will too.

Pride & Prejudice on Cape Cod!

Having discovered JAFF back in 2006, and having been thoroughly in love with it for all this time, I’ve read a ton of prequels, sequels, variations, and retellings. There’s a lot to choose from, and it’s a great community of readers to be a part of. But what I always long to see more of, and often fail to find, are well-executed modern retellings. So, I was so thrilled to get my hands on this third story (fifth book) by Cat Andrews just in time for summer and some beach reading!

Here's what I LOVED about it:

1. Pride and Prejudice on Cape Cod! I grew up in New England, and going to the Cape was always such a special trip. Dance the Tide brought the Cape back to life for me for a couple of days, and I couldn’t be happier. You just can’t help but be transported to the places Ms. Andrews writes about, she does it with so much love for these settings. If you haven’t been to the little village of Woods Hole before, by the time you’re done reading Dance the Tide you will be ready to go.

2. A musical Darcy. Just as in the original, life and circumstances mean family responsibility has had to take precedence over some of his young dreams, but this Darcy’s soul is full of music, and when he finally lets people get close to him, he feels compelled to share his musical passion. Lizzy is a lucky girl!

3. Lizzy the ecohydrologist. Canon Lizzy loves to escape to the countryside to work through her thoughts and feelings on long rambles through beautiful scenery. So, bring Lizzy to present day, and place her in such a beautiful setting, and it only makes sense that she would be passionate about ecology. After reading Dance the Tide, I’m ready to go stay in her little house on the water, ditch my car, and ride the bike trail everywhere for a while!

4. Jane as Lizzy’s fierce defender. I’m not always a huge fan of Jane as a character in JAFF. We are told in P&P what a wonderful, kind, and beautiful person she is, but we only know it because Lizzy defends her so vehemently. Dance the Tide Lizzy has been hurt badly in the past, and I just love that Jane is more than pretty and kind in this story. She’s got Lizzy’s back, and no one hurts Lizzy without incurring Jane’s ire.

5. Last, but certainly not least, the quality of the writing. I just love this author’s writing style. It fully immerses you in the lives of the characters and makes you feel like you truly know them. Her dialogue flows so freely, her settings become characters in their own right, and she makes sure to throw enough angst and drama in to keep the plot moving along at a steady pace.

What I think you should know BEFORE reading:

1. There are references to things in this story, which though they happen prior to the story’s outset, could be upsetting to some readers. If either sexual assault or miscarriage are too hard a topic for you right now, you might have trouble reading Dance the Tide. They are both treated very carefully and respectfully in my opinion, but they are part of the story.

2. I am a pretty big angst weenie, so I feel like it’s fair warning to say that of her three stories published to date, this one feels the most angsty to me! Though you know they will eventually work it out in the end, she’s got you pretty convinced it might not happen, and my stomach was clenched through most of it.

3. I say this every time I review a mature adult story, but it drives me so crazy to read bad reviews where the reader bashes the author for adult content, so here is goes: If you are the type of JAFF reader who wants the door to stay closed in everything you read, this isn’t the story for you. It is a story that details a healthy adult relationship set in modern times and has a good amount of steam. In my opinion, it is very tastefully done, and extremely sweet and loving. But if you aren’t a fan of steamy romances, just skip this one. Please don’t bash the author when she has directly stated it contains adult material in her synopsis.

A long and satisfying story

4.5*.

This a very long story which draws the reader into the developing relationship between Elizabeth and Will. They both have traumas and difficulties in their past which are slowly revealed to the reader although not always to each other. This unwillingness to open up completely comes back to bite them with a vengeance.

The writing flows well and carries the reader along with Elizabeth and Will through the good, the bad, and the very ugly. There are huge rocks along the path to happiness as well as an enormous pit which they temporarily fall into but we can trust this author to pull them out.

I felt that the ‘modernisation’ of the classic was well done across the board but I thought this was particularly well done with Darcy. Again and again I spotted little examples which were pertinent to the story but also had clear parallels to the original.

I highly recommend this book.

Tides Need to be Danced In

Another lovely modern Pride and Prejudice novel by this author. The story was awesome!

I enjoyed the strong Jane which is unlike canon. She has Lizzy's back in so many ways. Lizzy has much she needs to overcome. Once Darcy gets his head out of his other body part, he is a romantic lead. I especially enjoyed this aspect of the story line. He has much to make amends for and not just to Lizzy.

Ms Andrews has written another believable Modern Pride and Prejudice tale.
The characters seem to come to life with their dialog and backstories.
You want to route for these characters to get together even though they both have many obstacles to overcome.
She is able to weave in real life places that make you want to visit them.

another great variation

This author does so well with modern variations. I don’t think another does it better. Things do happen quick for ODC before they hit rough waters. However, the angst is not unbearable and really is addressed quickly. Well worth it and great characters.

Wonderful

This author has become an automatic purchase for me. She never disappoints. Elizabeth is a researcher in the field of oceanographic ecology, and Darcy runs the family real estate empire. They're both in Cape Cod, and occasionally Boston for work. They meet through Jane and Charles, who are dating. As per usual, Darcy makes a poor first impression on Elizabeth, but before too long they're a couple. Wickham is particularly evil in this one, and has done some pretty awful things to Georgiana. Consequently, she's messed up psychologically, but with Darcy's and Elizabeth's help, among others, she's improving. Wickham eventually has an impact on Elizabeth's life, and it leads to all kinds of fireworks and troubles between her and Darcy.

The story is modern day, so there's lots of sex, swearing, and modern-day issues. Both of our beloved main characters are seriously flawed, and have deep seated issues from their respective pasts. The usual P&P villains appear, but Caroline Bingley and Catherine DeBourgh are just annoyances. Wickham, Lydia, and Bill Collins are a lot more problematic. One nice thing about modern day versions of P&P is that the setdowns and comeuppances are pretty straightforward and blunt. Very satisfying.

The book is well written and well edited. I didn't think the book needed to be as long as it was. Some judicious editing and shortening of overlong scenes could have been done with no loss of integrity. There were a lot of repetitious sex scenes, as well. However, I recommend this book highly for an entertaining and imaginative story.

I enjoyed this sweet modern romance between Darcy and Lizzy. I do think the book was way too long, unnecessarily. I also think that the use of “um” and “ugh” was way overdone between most of the characters to the point of being very annoying. This could be a 5 star with a few edits.

Meet your next favourite book! And just considered yourself warned: you won't replace it very soon!

Be also prepared for few sleepless nights, grumpy mornings and very irritating people around you who won't leave you alone to just go back and read your book!! And no, not 'finish your book' because actually you don't want it to end!! And when it does, you just *have* to start it again!
Yes, that kind of a story! It sucks you in and won't let you go! And the characters would follow you and live in your head a long while....
Because they are wonderful! Not perfect, because they have faults and make errors - oh boy, do they make errors - but wonderful!
I loved this Elizabeth - strong and confident and happy on the outside and fragile and circumspect at the same time, and I loved her relationship with Jane! I loved her scientific background and her passion for her job and the way she so totally trusts Darcy!
Darcy is - obviously - perfect! Not! Of course he makes mistakes and he doesn't open or trust easily but, as always in Cat Andrews's stories, he is the perfect combination of strong and fragile, plays guitar, puts together magical surprises, admits his errors and is passionate! Their love is an ardent one and Cat has, like no other, the gift of writing these ardent and passionate scenes!

Of course, the path of true love is not running smooth for Darcy and Elizabeth... There are vilains - nasty ones indeed -, there is also Mrs Bennet, hurtful and discriminatory, Mr Bennet, indiferent and lazy, obnoxious, clueless and delusional Caroline and a surprising Lydia (although, of course only yo the end, after the worse has been done), helpful Mr and Mrs Gardiner, Georgiana, Richard Fitzwilliam and some new names...

I couldn't not remark upon the beauty over - which brings together some very significant details from the story... Yes, those Adirondacks has something to tell....

A long and satisfying book - one that I would definitely read again and again!

I am a huge fan of Cat Andrews' books. Her modern Pride and Prejudice adaptations are among the best out there. She just has a way of transporting Jane Austen's beloved book and characters into our modern world with such subtlety and creativity. It captivates us from the moment we open the book.

That is why I was so excited to read Dance the Tide, and I couldn't be more satisfied with this book. Darcy and Elizabeth's love story is so unique here, so intense. Their first meeting is not very auspicious but soon they recognize they have found someone really special and it is just like a soulmate's meeting. Their doubts and insecurities slowly disappear and they just dive in, finding out more about each other and falling in love. Unfortunately their road to happily ever after is not so smooth and they go through a very painful and difficult moment. It felt excruciating to see them suffer so much. I felt torn apart, sometimes wanting to just knock some sense into Darcy but understanding he needed to do some soul searching, and wanting to hug Elizabeth and tell her everything would be all right. Cat Andrews was really amazing while writing their love story. They needed this to grow stronger and surer of not only their love, but most importantly, their trust in each other.

And throughout all this, we are constantly reading about all those beautiful and real places in Cape Cod and Boston and I often found myself googling for images. It is something that happens in all her books and my list of places to visit only grows after I finish one of her stories.

Dance the Tide is a story to be read and savored, filled with love, hope and second chances.
