In a world where you either have power or you don’t, sometimes those who seem to have it all do not. Althea has spent her entire life under the control of others, dreaming of being seen and heard. Kol has spent his life with far too much power, but utterly alone and waiting for something to fill the void. An advantageous arranged marriage will bring them together, while forces stronger than their desire for one another will try to pull them apart.
Kol’s family, the Mori’s, have used their mythical powers of Control for generations - ruling over the Empire with an iron fist. In stark comparison, Althea’s family has used their gift of Veritas to support their people and thrive in their land. Their undeniable differences in upbringing will provide Althea and Kol with many obstacles to overcome before they can make it down the aisle. Concurrently, while on a journey of self discovery, Althea uncovers dark truths about both the Empire and Kol that will threaten to pull them apart.
Will they be able to overcome their irrefutable differences? And will they together be able to save the Empire from corruption and ruin?
This book has it all, romance, action, mystery, suspense, an a hole king lol. I really loved this book. It was well written and the characters are great (minus the king of course). With Thea's power to sense truth and Kol's power of control they make an unstoppable pair. With Thea being more the level headed one in the beginning and showing Kol that violence is not always the answer. But after she was kidnapped and tortured, you can see a shift in her behavior and see that she is clearly suffering and going through some hard PTSD. I LOVE LOVE LOVE DOROTHY! She is probably my favorite side character. She is a take no shit kinda woman and I am HERE.FOR.IT!!!
All this to say LOVED THIS BOOK and can not wait to get the second one on my shelf! :)
I received this book as an ARC, this is my honest and unbiased review.
5 Stars!
Wow, I really enjoyed this book! I felt like life kept getting in the way of getting time to sit down and actually read a physical book, but every time I would have the time to sit and just read I was sucked into this story! I hated having to put it down to sleep and go to work and would think about it while I was going about my daily life. While I loved the Prince of Death, Kol, finally being able to show his softer side off to Thea, I also loved that he was still very much giving 'Touch Her And You Die' vibes! He wasn't an Alpha-hole towards Thea, and instead was honestly entirely with her and listened to her perspective. Thea was exactly what a strong female character should be! She was able to not only stand up for herself, but show others how she expected them to treat her. She didn't let her past traumas deter her from doing what is best for her future Kingdom and took risks others weren't willing to take. I liked that in order for her to be powerful, she didn't have to give up on her powers.
My absolute favorite part of this book is the BANTER!!! The banter and sarcasm used between Thea and Kol is absolutely top notch! Additionally, I even think I was liking the almost villain-arc that seemed to begin to happen towards the end of the book, and I'm interested to see if that will continue into book 2.
The only thing I would've changed about this book would be the spice, it was all closed door and fade-to-black. Just personally, I think it would've added to the trust in the relationship and helped to show the readers a little more how they became so close and in-sync so quickly.
All in all, I would absolutely recommend this book to my fantasy/romance loving friends!
I can’t stand how the authors changes the POV in between paragraphs is so jarring and it ruins the tension of a scene.
The modern phrases used didn’t make sense with how the world was based. They rode in carriages, women had minimal rights, pants are risqué but the prince is gonna standup for s*x workers???
Finally, the magic made no sense. She can tell the truth or when someone is telling the truth even if they aren’t intentionally lying? He can suddenly make ppl die ??? Out of nowhere!! Why bother going into battle when you can just tell ppl to drop dead.
I can’t. This book made me rethink my kindle unlimited subscription.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ this was a very interesting book. It’s written in a fourth person POV which is super unique but a little hard to get used to lol the end felt rushed and kind of cheesy. IDK I just didn’t care too deeply about the characters 🫣
I think this book had the potential to be booktok’s next obsession. But that’s what it mainly held on to - it’s potential.
The author had created this captivating power system, political intrigue and romance and it almost felt like they threw it all away. I can see why people enjoyed this book. It had all the possible tropes and tension that one could want from a ‘romantasy’. Like, she really said, “oh, how many clichés can we fit in here?”, “try me.” It took all the things readers love from Fourth Wing, Divine Rivals and ACOTAR and put it into one whole book. But, without any foundation. The romance clearly took centre stage but it all felt a bit false. I also think the romance could’ve been more slow-burn, and progressed through a couple of books. It may be a personal preference of mine, but I just can’t stand insta-love.
The book starts with a prologue. It’s a POV of the main character being kidnapped. Now, as anyone would assume, I thought this was going to be the main conflict of the book. But I was shocked to discover that it took place half way through the book and was over between three pages. I mean, every single conflict in this book COULD have been it’s own book. The power system lacked much explanation and there was practically no world-building. All-in-all, I just felt like everything was solved a little too quickly.
That being said, I liked the characters and their development. I credit the author for creating an entertaining story, I just felt annoyed that this story was so close to being a hit.
I really enjoyed the world building & the character development of this book! I feel like a lot of books that have fantasy elements to them tend to get repetitive, but I felt like this book had a realm that was totally new to me. I’m also over here wishing I had my own Kol *insert spicy emoji*.
I’m on the edge of my seat to find out what happens with Thea & Dorothy’s friendship & I’m very excited to see what is in store for Thea & Kol and see how they navigate this next chapter!
Oh, this novel sits strangely in my mind. I enjoyed it, definitely, having read it in one sitting (ignore the start/finish dates), but there were many things I struggled with.
I think, for starters, this book doesn’t really know its target audience. I couldn’t tell if it was YA or adult. We have very violent scenes, sultry innuendo, but can’t say “f*ck”. Now I’m not saying that a book needs to contain swear words for it to be successful, but instead we got “feck”, which felt like a half-hearted attempt at expletives that didn’t quite hit the mark in the stressful and often life-threatening situations they were used in. Some of the writing is… interesting, with what sometimes feels like self-insert, and I can tell this book didn’t have a final proofreader. But did I enjoy it? Heck yes I did.
This book is set in a fantasy world but has Christianity as its religion. I think the author might be religious, guessing from the acknowledgments, and that’s no problem but it was a little jarring to have real world concepts in an otherwise high fantasy setting. It wouldn’t have taken much to change a few terms to make it more fantastical because, for instance, the mention of Christmas was blink-and-you-miss-it.
The book is written in the third person omniscient (which I don’t like). I like to be invested in the head of one character for a chapter. I don’t mind multiple POVs but the concept of getting the introspection of multiple people between paragraphs is challenging to do well. Not the end of the world, of course, but I didn’t appreciate it personally.
Characters are great. Kol is well done, with a very dark, sadistic streak coupled with pure and unadulterated love for his betrothed. This is probably the crowning glory of the book - and sometimes I will admit it feels a little… overdone… but all in, I found Kol to be surprisingly believable. Thea is also a well formed and fun character to read about. She carries the majority of the story with her strength, curiosity and feisty nature. Together they make a formidable team.
There’s something about the writing style that I need to comment on. This is what made me think it was more aimed at a younger audience despite the content. I can’t quite put my finger on what, but this book felt a little… juvenile at points. I’ve already mentioned the moments where it felt self-insert, but it’s more than that. If I work out what it is I will come back to edit my review and be a little bit more specific. But this vague notion that didn’t sit right with me is the real reason for the four star rating.
Overall this was a solid, engaging, and demanding read. Demanding in that I couldn’t put it down and needed to know what happened next. If there’s more to this series, I will be definitely reading subsequent books.
I’m not 100% sure how I want to rate this, so I’ll just leave a review without a rating.
What I loved: -very cool magic system: Blessed characters have “controls” where they can control/discern different aspects of life. -closed door romance: I love some spice here and there, but I really do enjoy not having all the dirty details -striving towards spousal equality: in a world that would traditionally be soaked in misogyny, Kol treats Thea as an intellectual equal
Where I struggled: -pacing: the first 60ish% of the book was incredibly slow. If it hadn’t been for the opening scene of the book, knowing there was action down the line, I would’ve abandoned the attempt to read it.
-world building: there could’ve been more refinement in the world building with regard to the belief system. God (capital G) is mentioned, but do the Blessed receive their control from him? Is it a different God?
All in all, the story was good, especially the last 40%. This book was the self published debut of the author, and it was a great start. A helpful hand with editing could’ve helped drive the plot without feeling bogged down in details that didn’t benefit the story. At some point, I will probably read the sequel, and I hope that story will very the pace of the end of this book.
God gave power to some to use for good , but as time went on, those with powers wanted more power and used their powers for evil. Thea had the power of truth, and was able to determine when someone was telling the truth or lies. Her parents made an agreement with the realm of controllers, as soon as they knew they were having a baby girl. Thea was to marry Prince Kol or as he was known…Prince of death. She was prepared in every way as to how to please her husband when the time came. Prince Kohl’s father had the power to control people and used his power with violence and raised Kol the same. However, his mother had the power of sway, and could, suggest in people minds to think like her. She swayed Kol, to treat his wife as an equal, and to be kind to her, but only her. When the time came for the wedding, Thea was hesitant because she was kind and didn’t see the reason for such brutality. When they wed, Kol was worried that his enemies would use Thea to get back at him. Can he keep her safe? Will Thea help him gain control over the other realms? This book is action packed from the very beginning and doesn’t stop! You will not want to put it down!
I’m sorry no hate to the author but this book was worst book I’ve ever read. It should’ve stayed on wattpad- as this is a book I would’ve enjoyed when I was 13 reading on wattpad.( no hate to wattpad authors or readers )
This book would’ve been better if it was edited (I’m assuming it wasn’t) There was spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes, but they are an easy fix. I feel like the author has potential but just isn’t there yet.
I feel like nothing happened in this book besides one short lasted incident. This book was so boring, and I can’t tell you how badly I wanted to dnf it.
KOL THE MMC GAVE HE THE BIGGEST ICK. EW
He was just yucky I don’t know even how to describe why. (I feel like he was written like a wattpad man but not in a good way)
This whole book the FMC was just Constantly talking about sex and wanting to please him. (Ew) and also just her thinking about how obsessed she is with him. Also when they finally do have sex it’s not at all descriptive (which I like) but the book was all talk about sex then barely anything happened.
Yeah I just really don’t think this book was for me at all.
I really tried to enjoy this book because a good friend who knows the author recommended it. I, unfortunately, just couldn't get into the MMC. He was raised to be cruel to the point that was off-putting and promises the FMC that he will stop and consult her more but doesn't necessarily follow through (though this might be fixed at a later point that I didn't make it to). Instead, we see our FMC start to change and cross lines she normally wouldn't in the name of "helping him and the kingdom". And again, maybe these things are fixed later but I unfortunately had to add this to my DNF shelf.
Ps. It was also a bit confusing to figure out the POV switches as there was no warning or indication that we were switching POV.
I did enjoy the premise of the plot, however. I just wish it was executed a little better.

I really enjoyed this book! It was everything I expected it to be when hopping into a fantasy book that was heavy on romance. I literally was reading parts of it like I was a school girl, squealing and googly eyes on Kol, the Prince of Death himself. I cannot WAIT for book 2 (which may or may not already be in my hands 😏)
But really, S has fantastic writing. It was so raw and emotional and I found myself falling in love with the characters. The world-building elements were incredibly unique, as well as the magic system. if you're looking to get lost in an arranged marriage, and lots of love, pick up this bad boy!
Good : Nice Intro to the world and easy to understand the dynamics. I find some books go so indepth it feels like you need a degree to fully understand how the world works. I could not always guess what was going to happen next so that was also a plus. Love story with "touch her again and I'll kill you" vibes. Bad: Things that could have been expanded were shrugged off. I think this could have been put into two books that expanded and explained on the powers that the main characters had. But, maybe that is to come in the next book. In short good read. Looking forward to the next one. do recommend.
Not going to lie, I was a little confused by this book, because of the kingdoms aspect and some of the rules, my mind associated this as a book set in the past, medieval times. But there was some modern fashion in there... so I am confused on the time period of this book. And I feel like there wasnt a whole lot of descriptions but I kind of liked that because then my brain could come up with my own assumptions and create pictures in my head. Overall I liked the story line, and am excited to read the next book.
I desperately wanted to like this book. The idea of the storyline was there, the mfc was raised to be a gentle, prim and proper princess to be married to the Prince of Death, who has a terrifying reputation. The book premised the mfc does not have fighting skills and I was interested to see this contrasted all the badass fmc from most viral romantacies.
However, the writing style is not for me, the past tense language disconnects the reader from the main character, I felt like I was reading a bedtime story instead of immersing myself in the world and living through the characters.
I LOVED this book so so much. It made me feel everything very deeply. I loved the story, the characters, the development that Thea has throughout the book, how she finds herself, how Kol starts changing for her, how he treats her, how they love each other deeply, how he’d do ANYTHING for her. Their powers were very cool, and I really like how Thea’s ends up being way cooler than expected. Their powers complexity of the characters was super interesting: their traumas, their fears, their need, their past. How dark the book really is in its core is just crazy. The way it’s written and how we get to know the character’s story makes us empathize with an actual mental psychopath. But you just love him anyway. AND THE RESCUE SCENE?! HELLO?! CRA-ZY! At the end all they really need is each other.
Absolutely devoured this book 😍 this was such an amazing read, it has arranged marriage, powers, touch her and die, who did this to you, the list goes on! The male main character Kol is officially my new book boyfriend 🤤 around everyone else he is broody, dangerous, and scary… but to her he screams golden retriever energy 😂 he literally treats her like she is a queen and anything she says he will do immediately. I am so much in love with this book and CANNOT WAIT for book 2!!!
The instant romance between the characters was unbelievable and awkward, at best. Dissenters and conflicts were pushed off to the side until it was interrupting the romance between the main characters. Badly paced, dialogue being under developed & the world was underwhelming. Just not my cup of tea.
The world building felt like a lore dump at the beginning of the book. The change between characters without notice was extremely jarring, and the FMC just caved to the MMC. She didn't stand her ground and yes she had to change to accommodate the world around her but she did so at the change of her morals.
I really wanted to like this... It has a lot of potential but it's very awkward and can't really decide what age group it's targeting. It was a struggle to get as far as I did. Maybe one day I'll come back and try to read this again.
I wanted to love this book, but it had no stakes or suspense. The ending was essentially the main character saying okay I win. Th characters were very shallow and the romance was very meh for me..
I won't be finishing the series.

A decent YA romance with a strong FMC and morally grey MMC. I’m not sure if I’ll read the second book or not at this point as I’m not intrigued enough to keep reading their story.
Loved this story! As a fan of morally gray men, I was squealing with delight from the second Kol appeared. The world building was fantastic and I can’t wait to see more of it. Also, BIG fan of Thea’s character arc especially towards the end. I’m excited for the next one!
