The Mutopians Book One: Imposter Syndrome

Rate this book
We saved the world.

We found a home.

But our problems aren't close to over.

The English countryside is hallucinating, we're harbouring a literal alien, and now there's a killer on the loose wearing my face. And as the trail of my murderous doppelgnger leads deeper into darkness, we'll need to dig up secrets from mutant history in order to fight back. I've never been the best at being a hero, and as things spiral out of control, I'm about to come face to face with my worst nightmare: myself.

"The satisfying start of another clever, gloriously queer saga in the Cute Mutants Universe-as dynamic and chaotic as your favourite superhero comics, but with a 21st century update." - Claire Winn, author of City of Shattered Light

"Dear horrible aliens. Don't fuck with the Cute Mutants. xoxox, Alyse."

The Cute Mutants are back in a brand new sequel series. In this book there's a killer on the loose who looks exactly like Dylan. It's up to Dylan and the other Cute Mutants to find who this Dylan 2.0 is.
Oh, and there's an alien invasion from another universe.

This whole book was amazing! There was a lot of action but there was also a lot of sadness. They're still mourning a certain character that died in Cute Mutants Vol. 5. (I cried a lot)

It's no secret how much I love The Cute Mutants and this book is no exception. This is everything a sequel series should be. We don't just have Cute Mutants continuation but there are even a few characters from Shitty Mutants and Project Himbo which I really liked.

Honestly, 5 starts isn't even enough.

As a fan of the Cute Mutants series, I wasn't sure where S.J. was going to take things after the end of the main series and with the things in the other books. But if you think they don't have a bunch more stuff in store for our favourite mutants, you are dead wrong.

Imposter Syndrome brings us back to the POV of Chatterbox, who is dealing with the usual mess of things- their newly come together throuple with Marvellous and Penance, being one of the people in charge of a mutant island, the whole plant/mutant/hybrid thing, as well as being a parent of sorts. But that all takes a back burner when someone who looks like them starts killing people. And though some books would make that the whole crux of the plot, Imposter Syndrome adds so much more. Newly discovered aspects of mutant history, alternate universes with hungry Gods, and a really deep look into grief and what it does to people- and mutants. And more than that, it includes a hell of an epilogue that I just know is going to lead to some crazy stuff down the line.

I love this series, and Imposter Syndrome is a welcome addition to the Cute Mutants universe.

Actually more of a 3.5, but yeah.

Note for this book: You should definitely read Project Himbo before this, because otherwise a lot of the stuff in here won't make much sense.

This book was very good on a lot of levels. The characters and the atmosphere were absolutely on the level of the other books in this universe. So were the emotions (and ouch were there a lot of them!)
However, there were some negative aspects, most of them small to medium plotholes. Character appearing where they shouldn't be, wrong recounting of events, character appearing without any previous mention of them being there, usage of powers that seems incongruent to previous installments. Stuff that could easily be fixed, but definitely takes you out of the moment.
The plot in itself was good, however i did find the pacing of it a little odd at times.
I am still excited to see what is next and what else besides the "main" plot this universe has to offer

The first Cute Mutants series finished on quite an epic note, and this series follows on from that, and if things were crazy and a bit weird by the end of vol 5, this one certainly takes it up a notch. Aliens, a dooplegangers, and the world still out to get them, this is the Cute Mutants as you know them, but like the earlier books, it is also dark and heavy in places. Things don't always go well, and sometimes there isn't anything you can do about it.

It is very much a great read. It's good to be back in Dylan's pov, with all of the attitude and sass, and all of the struggles as well. It's nice seeing the relationships and characters develop even further, and their found family is just adorable. The book concludes well, and also sets things up for the next in the series. You don't mess with the Cute Mutants and get away with it.

Note that this story references and contains characters that were introduced in Project Himbo, so that one is a must read before starting this one.

An amazing new chapter

I love the cute mutants. The story is wild and the characters are wilder. Honestly well worth a read, even if it will stomp on your feelings from time to time.
