This book tells us about one of the greatest story-tellers the world has known. Many of the events in his life, and the characters whom he knew, are described in his books: this is the story of the man who wrote them.
Lawrence du Garde Peach was an English author and writer of plays for radio, stage and screen. Today he may be best remembered as the author of over 30 books for Ladybird's Adventure from History series of nonfiction children's books, published from 1957 until his death, which was the largest series Ladybird ever produced, and remained in print until 1986.
I love Charles Dickens and I loved this! Another excellent account of a great life by the Dynamic Duo, the Batman & Robin of Ladybird Books: Du Garde Peach and Kenney. The author was clearly a Dickens fan. It’s made me feel eager to read the books I’ve not yet got round to, and to visit some of the Dickens sites in Kent.
I thought the book itself was very nice, and the information was decent. The illustrations were beautiful, but they seemed very positive, whereas the subject they were illustrating were quite negative, so they didn’t quite fit.
What a terrible little book. I picked it up as a gift for a little cousin, but decided against giving it in the end. Firstly, because of the way it's written. Secondly, i don't think its entirely accurate, and finally, because of the illustrations, which suggest that yhongs were better than they actually were. I usually like these small books on history, but this one falls short on every mark.
As a child I really enjoyed reading these Ladybird history books. It was probably these books that first inspired my life long interest in history. It was almost 60 years ago when I first read this book. The format of all the books is the same. they are all 50 pages long, with a page of text accompanied by a full page illustration. The illustrations by John Kenney are superb, and what makes these books so special. Even after 60 years, I remember clearly the pictures in this book. Reading it again after all these years, obviously, this is a book written for children.. As such it only really gives a thumb nail sketch of the life of Dickens. Some of the pages simply describe what life was like in early Victorian England. The pictures also quite often illustrate scenes from Dickens novels such as David Copperfield or Nicholas Nickleby. But learning in detail about the complex life of Dickens is not the point of this book. For me, at the age of 67, the point is the sheer joy I get from seeing the illustrations again and reminding me of the thrill it gave me when I first read it all those years ago. So for people of a certain age, this is a not-to-be- missed nostalgia trip.
