कीर्तिगान

उन्माद के जाल की पैमाइश में जुटे एक पत्रकार की उथल-पुथल भरी ज़िन्दगी की कथा है—‘कीर्तिगान’, जो उस वक़्त और उलझ जाती है जब भीड़-हत्याओं और उनसे जुड़े लोगों से मिलते हुए उसके लिए प्रत्यक्ष-अप्रत्यक्ष का भेद मिट जाता है। उसकी दुनिया उन लोगों से भर जाती है जो या तो इस दुनिया में नहीं हैं या उन भीड़-हत्याओं से जुड़े हैं। उसकी ज़िन्दगी का एक सिरा उस स्त्री से जुड़ता है जो भीड़-हत्याओं की रिपोर्टिंग के अभियान में उसके साथ काम कर रही है और ऐसी हर घटना के साथ अपने उस अतीत के निकट पहुँच जाती है जिसकी ज़मीन एक त्रासदी की स्याही से अब तक गीली है।

अपनी नौकरी को बचाए रखने भर के लिए इस अभियान से जुड़ा पत्रकार और अपने काम को पसन्द करने वाली उसकी सहकर्मी, दोनों की अपनी-अपनी त्रासदियाँ उस समय व्यक्तिगत नहीं रह जातीं जब वे रिपोर्टिंग के दौरान समाज में अकल्पनीय ढंग से जड़ जमा चुकी उन्मादी मानसिकता से रू-ब-रू होते हैं।

इसमें जीवन से वाचक का पुनर्जागृत प्रेम है और विकसित होती हुई एक प्रेम कहानी भी, जिनसे कथा विरल ढंग से पठनीय हो उठती है।

If you want a glimpse into the alienation caused by economic deprivation, cultural pauperisation, consolidation of patriarchy, and increase in bigotry and communal violence in the Hindi heartland in the last quarter century, look no further than Chandan Pandey’s fiction.
Keertigaan is situated in the same land of destitution where the first novel of the proposed trilogy was, but is far more grimmer and dystopian. In my mind, Sanoj (one of the novel's protagonists) is Maali Almeida's predecessor in the sense that he is living through the catastrophe.

Five starts for making me restless. This is not only a perfect written piece but an important one.

The book talks about the mob lynchings happening or happened in a country. How these mobs are organized and has a motive. The book has two narrators (Sanoj and Sunanda) both are journalist who are on a mission to record these mob lynchings ( the victim, the accused and the families). By the end of the book one of the journalist is under psychiatry care.

Read the book not because it's a piece of literature but it's an Important read. A most important read of our times.

Warning: Not for the those who read fairy tales. It is a heart wrenching account, and for sure is going to make you restless.
