The Last Friend You'll Ever Have

Rate this book
Suzie Cain has more problems than she can count—the least of which is the fact that, if she touches a person, that person’s going to die within the week.

That, at least, she can work with. If people want to give her money to hang out with terrible people, well—it isn’t anyone’s idea of a good time, but it’s a living.

She has bigger problems. For starters, she doesn’t know who she is. Oh, she knows she’s Suzie, orphan and foster kid. She knows she’s dangerous. But why? Where did she come from? Her only clue is an old photo of a very angry woman with some sort of…shadow hovering behind her and a strange poem—or is it a curse?—written on the back.

And now she’s picked up a new problem, a biker named Ace who seems to be tracking her across state lines. He’s operating under the assumption that Suzie is a mercenary for hire, just like he is—and he doesn’t like the competition. But when she’s got the chance, she doesn’t touch him and she doesn’t know why.

If Suzie can break her curse, she can change her luck.

But life is never that simple. Because of course not.

Sexual assault, curses, morally gray heroines, ice cream in egregious quantities.

This was an engaging story that had me turning the pages wanting to find out more about Suzie and her strange life. Told in the first person POV, it really had me feeling like I was in the middle of the action. The insight into Suzie's personality and all the complications in her life had me feeling how troubled, yet determined to find a better life, she was.

Ace was a fun complication to have. Whether he was dressed as a tough biker in leather and chaps or a smooth businessman in an expensive suit, Suzie was impressed with Ace's body even if she couldn't quite figure out why he was following her. Too bad she couldn't just kiss him and get the attraction out of her system. She didn't really want to kill him until she found out what his deal was.

The paranormal aspects of the story set up a unique battle between good and evil. And there was plenty of evil--Suzie had to deal with pedophiles, rapists, and murderers on a regular basis, so she was scarred by what she had seen and experienced. Yet she kept trying to balance out the evil by using her terrible gift/curse to take out the worst offenders. I thought the ultimate explanation for the curse and the resolution were plausible and the story had a satisfactory ending.

If you like edgy, paranormal dramas with plenty of psychological angst and some sizzling attraction, this book is for you.

Intriguing read. A woman who was born with a curse - everyone she physically touches dies within days - all she knows from her childhood is her birth certificate has no one listed on it and a picture with a woman who at times looks like she has a demon on her back with Angel of Vengeance written on the back.

Alice doesn't know her origins but instead of letting the curse completely ruin her life she decides to use it to punish rapists, pedophiles and murderers. But her lonely existence has taken a toll and she begins to wonder if life is worth living. Its at this time things take a drastic turn in her life with a tiny sliver of hope of learning about her origins along with possibly getting rid of the curse.

Awesome story line and unique concept! A lot of detail but it felt stretched out at one point. I did however, enjoy the shock value. Not really a romance, even though the cover looks like it. The two characters cross paths a few time but only really become the main theme in the last +- 10 chapters. Lastly, I'm not a fan of the title, no idea how it fits the story. Overall a 3.5!

The story line was good. The first half was painfully slow. Every repetitive thought documented in first person. And after all of that, the sexual attraction eluded to throughout was skipped over in the end as a “several months later” storyline. Should get two stars just for that. I’m annoyed at the ending. We got far too little for how long and slow it was.

I can't say I understand the title of the book.
It was a unique read. I enjoyed the story, kept my interest wanting to know "what's next" even in the slow parts.

There needs to be some major trigger warnings ...
There is on page SA of the FMC, not by the MMC.
Suicidal thoughts and plans.

Not really a romance and trigger warning for SA. A woman who can’t be touched a guy who keeps showing up. It has a happy ish ending which is all I ask. I still consider it a love story.

Wow-do not miss this one

Very different than anything I’ve ever read. I loved this book, couldn’t read fast enough. Vengeance just got some help, from an unlikely pair. A bit of romance, a touch of the paranormal, good and evil.
