All her life, Abigail has felt like a disappointment.
Her magic, if it even is magic, is different and strange, and it causes her nothing but heartache.
Every famous university and court mage this side of the Capital has tested her... but she can't even light a candlestick! Are the things she sees just figments of her imagination? Is Abigail simply mad?
She's left with one final test to find out for certain: the common city guild test.
Dive into the first Abigail Tally novel, where gods, spirits, and catkings bandy about, where magic, murder, and sleuthing are a walk in the district — and a healthy bit of sassy commentary never killed anyone... yet.
Vivid Descriptions, Nice coming-of-age magic story that doesn't copy Harry Potter
Most teenage wizard-in-training stories end up sounding like Harry Potter, but this one feels unique, and I found that refreshing. The story feels like a drama of non-romantic relationships that center around magic, social expectations, and class differences. The world building is just the right level of detail--enough to feel real, not too much to overwhelm. As far as pacing: I really enjoyed the beginning and the end, but the middle felt a tad slow.
The writing style is clean and easy to follow. And the dialogue is excellent.
One section I found memorable: -"Child, why do you smell so delicious?" The kerling licked its fangs. "So full of self-loathing and hatred."
If you want a unique story about magic, turn your eye toward this book.
Thanks to the lovely author who gifted me this book so graciously. From the first chapter I was hooked and I really wanted to know how it'll end. I haven't read anything like this before and I don't usually read this genre, but I was thoroughly entertained. If not fir my slow reading I would've enjoyed it a lot more. But life happens. Be that as it may, the beginning of the story was kind of slow and I only forgive the slow pace if there's a second book. The language used was a bit tricky for me and I didn't understand everything. That's just my English level and my lack experience in this genre.
Jaz has crafted an enchanting original story. Abigail is a loveable protagonist, and the friends she gathers around her during this adventure are varied and interesting. The pacing leaves enough time to take in the details while continuing to move forward and remind us that there's a mystery to unravel. Recommended for anyone looking for a fresh fantasy read.
I love this book! I've read it once so far and it's one of my favourite books. I like how Abigail has a really unique gift that no one can figure out and how she figures out to make it useful and uses it to help solve a magical crime. Oh, and I'm 12.
If you want a shy teenager who is discovering how her magic abilities work with her mentor and at the same time being sucked into a crime mystery, then this is the book for you!
