House of Bastiion

Rate this book
BEHIND THE MASK OF DUTY AND POWER, NO ONE IS WHO THEY SEEM...

After the Forgotten Wars ravaged the world and turned it to ash, the realm of Orynthia has thrived. To bring peace to their territories, the Houses of Pilar, Darakai, and Boreal forged an accord with Bastiion, founding a Quadren of advisory to the throne. Each generation, a single haidren is appointed to this coveted chair. But in a land of war and deceit, peace should never be trusted.

When Luscia Tiergan, al’haidren to the House of Boreal, reaches the age of ascension and takes her seat in court, she is driven into a maze of political traps and dark secrets. Her reputation soiled by seclusion and alleged sorcery, Luscia soon uncovers a pattern of forgotten children, slain in the streets of Bastiion.

Ascending from an upbringing rooted in cruelty and suspicion, Zaethan Kasim, al’haidren to the House of Darakai, quickly clashes with Luscia, the newcomer in his midst. His position in Darakai threatened by an old rival, Zaethan is forced into an uneasy alliance to gain the upper hand. As death spills across his second home, Zaethan must set aside his hatred to secure his claim and protect the blameless.

Following a disturbing stream of innocent blood, Luscia and Zaethan learn they are not alone as they race through the heart of Orynthia, the House of Bastiion.

THE SERIES
House of Bastiion is the first installment in the award-winning epic fantasy series, The Haidren Legacy. Brimming with courtly machinations and a diverse cast, House of Bastiion centers not around those wearing the crown, but those influencing it. Those who whisper into its ear; who protect or betray the agenda of the throne. For the most powerful in any society are rarely who they seem, and in the shadows are they ever truly unmasked. Themes such as loyalty, betrayal, duty, self-discovery, blood-ties, and prejudice unravel in a deadly explosion across a sprawling world built upon intricate cultural systems and diabolical plotlines. Following a string of hellish murders, this political masquerade packs a legendary punch for fans of Brandon Sanderson, Victoria Aveyard, John Gwynne, and Robin Hobb. By evoking the classic style of A Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings, The Haidren Legacy series is not for the faint of heart.

K.L. Kolarich

4 books466 followers
Throughout her life, K.L. Kolarich never expected to become a bestselling and award-winning epic fantasy author, nor one based out of Nashville, TN. But growing up in Metro Detroit, Kolarich developed a deep love for eclectic variety as well as the underappreciated. Both themes readily present throughout her treacherous series, The Haidren Legacy.

An individual plagued by sarcasm, conviction, and a constant distraction of fable and lore, K.L. Kolarich dreams in the day and writes through the night. Often hearing her characters argue in the background, Kolarich stifles the daily temptation to abandon reality and lose herself in the realm of Orynthia.

When fully present in the real world rather than another, Kolarich explores local waterfalls, habitually frequents the same Thai restaurant, adds to her ever-growing spice collection, and maintains a thoroughly messy kitchen for the sake of colorful vegan feasts.

With too many cats and not nearly enough wine, Kolarich resides in the woods away from the noise, happily married.

This book is free on Amazon (Canada) today (06/29/2022). 🙂

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley (thank you Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op). All thoughts and opinions are my own.

✅ World-building
✅ Characters
✅ Realistic relationships
✅ Politics and scheming
✅ Plot
✅🆗 Pace
🆗 It is hard to get into the story at first because of the complexity of the world-building

I usually start my reviews with a summary of the book, but this time I will start with a little information about the world-building, as this is a high fantasy that is very complex at first because of all the titles and words coming from invented dialects.

There are four Houses living in Orynthia: Pilar, Boreal, Bastiion, and Darakai. Many centuries ago, the four houses created a political accord with the royal line of Thoarne, ensuring that each house would have one representative in the Quadren that advises the King. Some chapters are from Luscia’s point of view, and others are from Zaethan’s. Luscia is appointed to become the next representative of Boreal in the Quadren, and Zaethan is Darakai’s future representative. Even though Darakai and Boreal have been enemies in the past, and there are still tensions between both Houses, Luscia and Zaethan will have to find a way to work together to stop the person who is killing children and cross-caste all across Orynthia.

While I’m not the biggest fan of high fantasy, I have to admit that the author did a splendid job with the world-building in this book. There are distinct cultures and languages in each Houses, and complex politics and relations between the Houses. It was honestly a little too complex for me at first. I love a book with a well-done and detailed world-building, but I had to check the glossary so many times while reading the first chapters, it was hard to really get into the book because of that. Once you get more familiar with the four Houses and their politics though, it's a really entertaining book.

The pace was a little slow at first, and that combined with the complexity of the world-building and the use of made-up language made it really hard for me to enjoy this book for the first few chapters, and I wondered if this would end up being a DNF. It is worth it though once you push through the first few chapters. Things start to make more sense, and you get used to some of the fictive words the characters are using.

I liked both main characters, and I especially loved that while being young adults (Luscia just turned 18), their dialogues and thoughts do not feel juvenile. We can see that they are biased, and still have room for maturing, but we can also see that some of them seem to be a little less biased than their elders, and it gives us hope for a better Quadren in the future.

Luscia is strong-willed, in control of herself, and very driven. Contrary to what I first thought when I read her chapters though, she is a confidant, but not an arrogant character, even though she clearly has strong magic, and is an exceptional fighter. She makes mistakes and she is mature enough to realize when she makes one and open-minded enough to listen to the advice she receives, even when she disagrees. I admire how she remained strong when faced with so much hate and prejudice.

Zaethian is a character that I didn't like as much as Luscia at first because of all his prejudices, but we can easily understand that it's just the way people have been thinking for generations, and I have to say that I am impressed by the way he realized that he was acting like his father, and tried to change because he didn't want to become his father. He also really tried to be more tolerant with Luscia once he saw that she might be more than a savage and dangerous witch hellbent on causing chaos and destruction.

The hate-to-reluctant allies relationship is very well developed, and it's a real slow burn, and we're not even close to being able to call it "love" yet. Definitely no insta-lust or insta-love. Both characters go from hating each other, to being forced to work together, to slowly trusting each other. It’s a slow and realistic relationship development, and I really like that the author took the time to slowly develop this relationship, and did not rush it just for the sake of having romance in the book.

I would definitely recommend this book to any high fantasy lover, or for anyone looking for a book with complex politics, good character development, and very elaborate world-building. If you are like me and are not exactly big fans of high fantasy, I would still recommend it, but just make sure that you are "in the mood" for a more complex book, with parts that have a slower pace, and dialogues that force us to go back and forth between the story and the glossary at the end.

4.75/5 stars!

If you've tracked my reviews before, you'll know that I am a massive fan of political fantasy and court intrigue! Let me tell you, House of Bastiion did not disappoint in any way! Frankly, the only reason it didn't garner a perfect rating from me is that I rarely give the first book in a series five stars because I just haven't had enough time to soak in the world and meet the characters.

The Houses of Pilar, Darakai, Boreal, and Bastiion forged an accord with the royal line of Thoarne, founding a Quadren of advisory to the throne of Orynthia. Every generation, a single Haidren from each of the four Houses is appointed to this coveted chair. House of Bastiion follows Luscia, the heir to the seat of the Boreal, and Zaethan, heir to the seat of Darakai, Boreal's ancient enemy. Luscia and Zaethan have to put off age-old rivalries and hatred to achieve their common goal: to stop the strange string of murders of have taken place across Orynthia. But in a land of war and deceit, the path to peace should never be trusted.

The first and most noticeable trait about this novel is the worldbuilding. No one would be able to protest against the fact that the author has breathed life into this world she's created! The world or Orynthia is beautiful and detailed, with distinct cultures and even fully-formed languages!

K.L. Kolarich also exhibits a beautiful writing style. I can't stand books with juvenile language, so I was thrilled to see her lyrical prose flow across the page! Her world choice and figurative language paint a picture of a city that takes no measures to avoid the spread of debauchery or the criminal underworld that comes with such an important location.

Finally, we come to the make-or-break part of a novel for me--the characters. I adored the characters in House of Bastiion! In fantasy books, we often see characters' flaws glamorized for the audience to try to sell the whole "bad boy" or "sassy heroine" thing. In this book, we see characters make mistakes, acknowledge them as wrong, and deal with that guilt. All the characters in this novel felt painfully real, especially how Zaethan acted around Luscia. He was horrible to her, and at one point he paused and recognized that. The author didn't try to explain that he had his reasons, he didn't know better, any of that. He just saw what he'd been doing and how he was starting to sound like his father, and that made him rethink everything.

Excuse me as I devote a section of my review to my excitement over this slow-burn enemies to lovers romance!! Part of why I normally dislike the enemies to lovers trope is because the characters go from hating each other to loving each other out of nowhere when that's not how it works. It goes from hate to dislike to tolerance to grudging acceptance. It's a gradient of greys, not a jump from black to white!

I absolutely loved this book and I can't wait until the next one comes out! I would highly recommend it to my fans of court intrigue and political fantasy.

A must read.
Do you know when you like a book so much that you want everybody to read it? This is that book.
I didn't know anything about this author or about this book. I don't even remember why I picked it (and I can tell you I have a long tbr list) but I'm so glad I did it! Now it's one of my favorite books, and it has everything I love:
-Fantasy.
-Great worldbuilding.
-Great characters.
-Enemies to lovers.
-Slow burning love.
And it is perfectly mixed together.
You don't know it, but you need to read it. ASAP.

It’s so hard to come across a fantasy book where you love everything from world building to characters to the storyline and this one checked all boxes for me at one go! I loved every second of it and I legit cannot wait for it’s sequel!!

The world building was fantastic. There is no other word for it. It was beautiful and intricate like never before. I loved Bastiion and each of it’s house except maybe Pilar haha. I love the enmity and tension between the houses. I loved the Haidren system which was so unique and exciting to read about. The start consisted a lot of world building and despite that it held my attention because the story kept flowing simultaneously no matter how slow.

The pace was slow but also fast at times and I just enjoyed every scene the way it unfolded. Even though I would have liked a lot more from a few scenes everything was perfectly explained and left me satisfied in the end. I liked the different cultures that the houses had. The narration was so brilliant it made sure to include every little detail.

I know you are tired of hearing me say I loved this and I loved that but I just can’t help it so bare with me. I- you guessed it- LOVED the characters!!! Zaethan and his dislike for the Borealis, Dmitri with his cool and calm and kind like personality, Luscia with her wisdom and strength all won my heart! I love this trio and can’t wait to read more about them. I need someone to hear my plea and make this book into a show because a movie will be too short to satisfy me.

If you're looking for a truly unique, adult high fantasy with some of the best/most complex world-building I've yet seen, then this is your next 5-star read (fans of Lord of the Rings and Priory of the Orange Tree will love this - a similar traditional-fantasy feel to the stellar prose/world-building details (she even invented fantasy languages), but with strong, well crafted female characters (much like Priory)). LOVED witchy warrior-mystic Luscia (and her wolfish companion), hot-headed (yet noble-hearted) Zaethan (the book does not have romance, but there IS incredible chemistry between Luscia & Zaethan - so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for book 2 - there's tremendous potential for an enemies-to-lovers slow burn romance here), and Prince Dmitri (I really loved kind, measured Dmitri's close friendship with Zaethan). There's political intrigue galore, multiple exciting action scenes (murder mysteries lie at the heart of this narrative), unique and thrillingly mysterious magical systems, fantastic fantasy weapons and even a zombie-like taint that can turn people into monstrous beings. This is the kind of book you want to read more than once just to absorb the intricate world-building (a nice index to language, etc. rounds the narrative out - as well as a detailed website providing an overview). I'll be starting the next book right away - a new favorite author to add to my list :) #TeamZaethan

I think this was one of the most racially diverse indie books I've ever read. And I'm here for this diversity, yes please.

I received an eARC in exchange from Book of Matches Meduia & the author for an honest review and promotion. All opinions are my own.

Orynthia is an empire of four different Houses, they are united under the royal line of Thoarne. Under the King, each House sends a Haidren that serves as the King's advisor until the King's succession. Upon each Haidren's Ascension, they travel to the capitol of Bastiion to serve in the King's Quadren. The northern House, Boreal, has been cast out of favor by the other Houses uniting to tear it down and cast them all as witches or y'sitis (derogatory slur).

When Luscia Tiergan takes her seat on Dmitri's Quadren, she's met with hostility from the other al'Haidrens, but Crown Prince Dimtri is determined to have Luscia's advice and friendship. As a string of murders of children cuts through Bastiion, Lusica finds herself teaming up with Zaethan Kasim, al'Haidren to House Darakai. While neither likes each other, they find they have more in common than they thought, and more to teach each other if they can put their differences aside.

Y'all this book was freaking incredible. Kolarich has put so much effort in building this world complete with a whole government, different cultures, language, swears, the whole shebang. I honestly don't really have anything to compare this to, because this blew so many other fantasy worlds out of the water. My only complaint is that I didn't see any on page queer characters. There were a couple comments from Zaethan that made me think Dimtri could be asexual, but I don't know.

This book is narrated by both Zaethan and Luscia. I loved both of these perspectives because we see how the past generations have destroyed the House of Boreal's reputation through Zaethan. And how Lusica deals with all of this and is determined to save her House's reputation. These two were absolutely enemies in the beginning, but I loved seeing them go to a grudging respect, allyship and at the end possibly actual friends. I don't think they're supposed to be romantic interests to each other, but that could change with the next book. I loved that this book didn't focus on romance either. There's a couple hints of romance sprinkled throughout, but it is not even close to being a focus.

I finished this almost a week ago and I'm not sure I know the whole picture of everything that's happening in this world. There were several characters in positions I didn't trust, and one I am wary of, but I think they're on the side of good. They're definitely withholding information from Luscia and I want to know!! I'm absolutely looking forward to the sequel and more answers.

Luscia also suffers from chronic migraines. She doesn't have them everyday, but oh my god I felt so seen by this smaller aspect of her person. I wish I had Alora to make me remedies though.

Wow - This is an engaging, well written, story. The world building is amazing and it instantly draws the reader into the world. The characters are well rounded, relatable and leap from the page, even the smelly ones.

There is intrigue, political manipulation, difficult family connections and hints of romance. I could not put it down until I finished it.

I was provided a review copy by the author and this is an honest review. This is a must read for any fantasy fan. I can't wait for the next one.

This was a gripping fantasy full of political intrigue and intricate world building, which was made even richer by the companion website with great resources like a map, extensive glossary and other info about the four different houses that make up Orynthia! The first few chapters were a bit of a whirlwind with meeting our 2 protagonists, Luscia & Zaethan, who come from different houses and hence have different languages, upbringings & views, but once my mind had started to wrap itself around the world and get familiar with the characters, I was absolutely hooked!! The plot was made up of layer upon layer of mystery, including but not limited to a string of murders, the loyalties of different characters and Luscia's intriguing abilities. The tension between all the characters, especially the main 2, was so entertaining but I really enjoyed seeing their relationship develop so they could work together to solve the murders. Everything was woven together so intricately and it was so fun, albeit frustrating, trying to figure out how the pieces fit together. I now have so many questions and desperately need the next book!!

Update: This is a whole new experience for me and I'm hooked from the first chapter! Everything is just perfect right from the start, the vast world building, fun characters development as well as the intriguing storyline. And the slow burn is killing me 🔥

Highly recommend this read as it deserves all the hype! I'm grateful to have the opportunity to read this book! Thank you K.L Kolarich for the physical copy!

House of Bastiion has been on my radar for almost a year. Almost a freaking year. I had planned to jump into this last month, but time got away from me. So, it brings me great please and happiness to read it this month.

On a snowy day, there's nothing better than some hot chocolate and a good fantasy book. The characters were so much fun to get to know too. It's a little interesting that romance is a main page genre for this because I didn't really think it was. Yeah, we get some hints here and there, but it mainly felt like background noise.

Now the mystery and everything else was definitely front and center. I've always been intrigued by court life in different kingdom's/worlds. So, it's safe to assume that this one didn't disappoint one freaking bit. From the very beginning, I didn't know who to trust and I still don't. Sort of.

I also thought it was a lot of fun to see two people team up. In a way, Zaethan and Lusican, seemed like complete opposites. So, when they get pushing against one another I could easily see the tension brewing. From enemies to potential besties, I think. I don't know if there will be something more, but I wouldn't be mad at that direction either.

In the end, I definitely enjoyed the heck out of this book. I'm super excited to jump into the sequel in March too. Or whenever I actually get to it.

House of Bastiion is the first installment in an immersive fantasy series revolving around character building, world building, and lots of political intrigue. K.L. Kolarich really draws the reader into this universe she has created, which has several different cultures that all interact with each other, including their own languages. The glossary of terms was very helpful throughout the book, but many times I found i didnt need it because of the context K.L. used in explaining everything in a way that didnt feel forced or artificial.

This is a slow burn series, which is very important to know right off the bat, especially considering the two main POV characters start off absolutely hating each other. So many times when hate turns into romance in novels like this, it happens quickly and suddenly with little to no character development, and often even the main characters have no idea what happened... because that’s just not how it works. This is not the case with HoB. K.L. really takes the time to pour into these characters, rounding out their backgrounds and explaining who they are and how they came to be that way, all while still leaving quite a bit of mystery and room for further growth in the future. The undertones of romance in this book are very well hidden, but they are there; and when the story hints at developing feelings between the two POV characters, it’s made all the more effective because of the struggles that they each went through to get to that point. I am so excited that K.L. has promised more romantic developments in book 2.

Luscia and Zaethan are very interesting main characters and very lovable in their own ways. Zaethan can come across as childish at times, especially when it comes to his perceptions of Luscia and her people. But it is clear from the very beginning that his behavior towards her stems from a biased worldview and a fierce protective instinct for his friend. The protectiveness is forgivable, and the bias is something that he has to work hard to overcome. Zaethan shows tremendous growth throughout the book, which is something that is very important to me as a reader. He doesn’t go from absolute jerk to knight in shining armor overnight; it’s a process that K.L. explores with Zaethan throughout the entire book.

Luscia is the epitome of the word “heroine”. She is strong, she is wise, she is loyal, she is confident in herself. But she also makes mistakes, and that is something that makes her very endearing, especially because she recognizes her mistakes. Many fantasy heroines that are overpowered, like Luscia appears to be at first glance, are made out to be faultless and fearless- i.e. unrelatable. This is not the case with Luscia. She is called out on her short-comings, and rather than deny them or turn into this suddenly helpless victim who shouldn’t really be blamed for anything, she ponders her mistakes and admits when she is wrong. She shows vulnerability, and she also shows growth. She is an incredibly interesting heroine, and I cannot wait to discover more about her history.

K.L. Kolarich did an amazing job with her first fantasy novel. She keeps you hanging on every word, delving into each new chapter with a feeling of such excitement and anticipation of what is going to happen next. This book is very detail-oriented. It’s heavy on world-building, it’s heavy on plot, it’s heavy on character development; it’s just all-around truly a wonderful book. There isn’t anything that I found lacking in this story. There are a lot of mysteries left unsolved; this book is an introduction into the world K.L. has built and it is clear that this story is just beginning. That is not to say that there isn’t substance in book 1. It is FULL of plot and emotion and intrigue; it’s exciting to think about how much more there will be in book 2 and on!

Wow! 5/5 stars!

When writing a review, I start by thinking about what I didn’t like about a book. Usually, I am an easy to please reader, so writing down the things I didn’t like don’t take that much time. When writing my review for #HouseOfBastiion by #klkolarich I really had trouble coming up with something I disliked, because honestly? There is nothing!

This book is huge on the world-building, which I knew beforehand thanks to @k.l.kolarich , so of course it would take me a little longer getting into it, right? Well, it took me exactly 2 chapters to be captured by this book. And these first two chapters? The only reason I did not get into it right away was because I thought I could handle it without glossary. But I’m not *that* smart. lol

The glossary really helped though and in the end I understood even the different languages perfectly, which made It feel like I learned a new language. That feeling when you hear something in a foreign language and you’re like “ OMG, I know what this means, I’m so smart!” ?? HoB gave me exactly this feeling and I am here for it. haha

As for the book itself - a fantastic and rich world, a story that is just beginning and that leaves room for so much more. It is a story full of courtly politics, intrigue and secrets. But there are also wonderful characters that ultimately played a huge part in why I loved this book so much. The two main characters basically hate each other, but they have to form an unstable alliance nonetheless. There were some scenes where I thought “you are such a douche, just sh*t up and stop saying such bs”, because of something a character said, but I still loved them. You are inside their heads and understand them and they are fantastically written. You just can’t NOT like them. Plus, we have an animal companion (I just can’t resist with these <3), we have a friendship that reminds me of Celaena and Nehemia (let’s hope it won’t end the same way) and we have the tiniest hint of romance for book two. (Currently, I feel like there might be 3 possible love interests and while that hint we got was with only one of them - and I would love for them to be a thing - I don’t really have a preference. All of these characters are so well written that I will be on board for every possibility!!)
Now, it is no secret that I am a sucker for romance and to be honest I *need* my romance to really enjoy a book. HoB didn’t have romance whatsoever and I still gave it 5 stars, because of how fantastic it was. This book didn’t need romance to be perfect.
So… what I want to say (and I don’t really want to say much more, because all the development in the story and the world-building really needs to be experienced) is this: If you like great characters, a mystery, court politics, intrigue and a hint of magic - House of Bastiion is your book!

This is such a wonderfully written story with complex characters. I did not want to put it down at all once I started to read it, sadly life and work got in the way sometimes but I finished it asap!

I loved learning about this world and how it was politically setup. The houses were amazing and it was so intriguing to learn about the different cultures within. Lusica was amazing and I immediately started rooting for her, Zaethan gave me some struggles, I wanted to go into the book and smack some sense into him, and Dmitri was a breath of fresh air. This book wasn't solely focused on romance but it was okay because the story was so mesmerizing it didn't need it to be front and center. I can't wait to see if there is more in the next book after the hint of romance we got but honestly I just can't wait to see how the characters handle their bombshell of a new situation.

I highly suggest you go grab a copy of this asap, plus the hardcover is gorgeous!

Magical Read!!!

First of all I had lots of expectations with this book because I really loved the cover (it is so spectacular) and the plot.

But damn this story exceeded my expectations, it was a magical read for me. Story was unfolding around two fierce and incredible character Luscia and Zaethan. I'm awestruck by the characters in the story not just these two, but I came to love every character in the story. To be honest I had a hard time understanding language in the beginning, find it bit difficult but what the hell it was worth reading.

Definitely looking forward to the next book.

(Jumping and Screaming kinda loved it 😍)

4 intricate stars!

God, what a book! House of Bastiion was full of action, adventure, gorgeous world-building and stunning character development. The characters were ripe with strengths and flaws alike, and beautifully written, so utterly lifelike that it was incredible. And the world! It was confusing in the beginning, but once I’d worked out who everyone was and where they fit in, it was shockingly realistic and captivating.

I really, really, REALLY loved Luscia. She had a badass, daring, take-no-prisoners attitude, and I’ve never known anyone so strong in the face of prejudice and hate. And lord, the hate she faced was horrific! My blood boiled everytime someone called her a witch or insulted her appearance or her people. But throughout it all, Luscia stood strong!

“If they wish to treat you like a prisoner, we’ll make it inconvenient for them!”

I also really loved her little gang of soldiers. They stood up for her at every turn, but also listened to her instructions and responded with care and trust. I really wish we were able to see a little more of them, and find out when the twins were reunited and all that!

I also really loved the Dmitri and Rasha, we didn’t see much of Rasha, but I loved what I did see. They were both such sweet and funny characters! I’ll love seeing how their relationship progresses.
Oh, and Rasha’s strong feminist opinions! I loved them ;).

“Men should not carry a crown.”
…”Too many emotions, they hold. Women are the backbone of a people. They break their body, mar their beauty, for the life. Each swallow great pain, and call it joy. Men, not the same. Great pain makes a great man crumble.”

All in all, this was gorgeously written and wonderfully unique! The world-building blew my mind, and I look forward to seeing how book 2 progresses. Thank you so much to the author and YA Bound Book Tours for the free copy :)).

This was one of those books that I couldn’t get out of my head, even days after reading it.

The world-building in this story is intricate and complex, and quite honestly, the first couple chapters had me overwhelmed. Seeing as each house has it’s own members, languages, and culture, it was a lot to initially grasp. But once I got my head wrapped around it all (I took a lot of notes and referenced her amazing website), I fell deep into this story and I was fascinated by all the detail.

As mentioned, there are a lot of different characters, but the story primarily follows the POV’s from Luscia and Zaethan. Luscia is empowered, strong, and just an amazing female protagonist. Zaethan on the other hand is protective, straight-forward, and sexy as hell 🤣 I adored them both along with a lot of the other super well-fleshed out characters.

Overall, this debut novel REALLY impressed me and it’s evident that Kolarich put her heart, soul, and (probably) tears into this work, because it shows. It’s been over a week and I still can’t stop thinking about this world and its characters. I truly fell in love with them 🥰

✨READ THIS IF✨

* You want high fantasy
* You like complex world-building
* You like court politics
* You enjoy a broad cast of morally grey characters
* You are okay with NO romance
* You like multi POV

————————

I also want to give major kudos to K.L. Kolarich for the AMAZINGLY RESOURCEFUL website she put together. It offers info about the different houses, characters, languages, etc. There’s even a quiz to see what house you belong to. #TeamThoarne

World building? Oh yeah, this book has it in tons !
I admit that I had a tricky time pushing through the first chapters. Took me a while to get into the swing of things and I had to use the glossary a few times. After a while though the story started unfolding and we get a world full of intrigue, mystery and prejudice.
I really liked Luscia. She is not your usual heroine. I enjoyed her strength and will to find the serial killer.
If you are looking for a romance fix,you will not find it here. This is more like enemies to friends but I cannot wait to see what the second book will bring.
Beautiful writing, excellent world building and a solid plot if you don't mind a slower pace in your books.
Color me intrigued!

If you are looking for world-building, look no further! Kolarich has crafted a world diverse in backgrounds and languages. There is a companion guide to help you along your journey as you dive into this incredible creation. While I did find this to be well done, it did distract me initially in my read. The first few chapters does feel a little like an information dump and while it was a little overwhelming I'm glad I kept pushing through. What I ultimately found was a book full of political maneuverings, court machinations and deep seeded prejudices. Will these characters be able to look beyond their differences and solve the problems facing their country? I really don't know and now I'm nervous and want book two immediately!!

Thank you so much KL Kolarich and BOMM tours for the free eARC.

I won a eARC from K.L Kolarich via bookstagram book tour, thanks to the author for my copy

House Of Bastiion is a gripping high adult fantasy packed with lot of political intrigue, intricate magic system, the world building is complex and the author does not shy away from giving all the details of the world she had so meticulously built, the plot is also driven by multiple POV's which I have to admit is quite well done because with the world building so massive, adding multiple POV's can sometimes be a bit of gamble. But the author totally won this gamble, I really enjoyed the magic system and the way the author had explained it- it could be still confusing because its quite layered, however K.L Kolarich has come up with a brilliant solution by creating the most resourceful website for Haidren legacy series, I highly recommend using this resource so you won't get lost in the world

I struggled a bit where I had to reread bits of it because of the complexity of the book and also reading e-book it was little distracting to go back and forth as I kept forgetting details, also the author is quite eloquent which I admired a lot but her verbiage is beyond me at times which is totally on me. I would love to see what further plans K.L Kolarich has for the future books in this series as the plot has immense potential to be an epic story :)

Update Aug 2022: I just did a reread on audio and it was exceptional! The soundtrack, the reader, it was an experience that I would highly recommend.

This book captured my heart from the first couple pages. Even before then with the stunning cover.

This book has an expansive amount of world building. (Think Game of Thrones with the families and houses and settings) K.L. Kolarich has made this beautifully written world with an epic story line. For her debut book it blows my mind the amount of intricate details put into it.

The main characters Luscia and Zaethan are at each other’s throats from the beginning. Zaethan is head strong, stubborn and loyal and Luscia is strong willed, compassionate and brave. They both want the best for their own houses and must work together for a common goal. They are both amazing characters, and the author did an awesome job making them complex enough to perfectly blend with the complex world they live in.

Overall the book was exceptional and I am stoked for book 2. I would highly recommend to fantasy lovers who love extensive world building, action, court life & rulers, some epic characters & very little romance.

Side Note - I read the whole book before I realized there was a glossary at the end. I’d recommend glancing at the different words and meanings before starting the book.

New favorite fantasy series of the year just after The war of lost hearts <3

I'm catching up on my reviews after my holidays so I actually have read (devoured really!) the second book since then but here is what I remember from my thoughts just after reading this one and before I had read the next one :

I loved the world building, the diversity and the characters. Luscia and Zaethan were very compelling (and she has a wolx ! Need I say more ?). I was all in for this sweet little enemies to lovers slow burn angsty romance I was seeing coming ! Add in some trainee-trainer trope where the woman is the trainer ? ... this ship sailed right away !
I also liked the side characters but thought we didn't spend enough time with them and/or they weren't enough developped yet. Other little things that bothered me and explains that while I love this book it wasn't a five stars : the twists didn't surprise me (but the figure had me really intrigued!) and the villains weren't grey enough for my tastes once again.

I jumped into the next one right away and I recommend this book a 100%, it deserves waaay more hype guys !

I cannot wrap my mind around how incredibly intricate, detailed, and interwoven this novel is! The world building is absolutely fantastic, and It is clear to see that K.L. Kolarich poured her heart into this world!

In House of Bastiion, you follow Luscia's journey from leaving her home and everything she knows to being thrown into a court filled with deadly politics and a vicious serial killer. From the moment she steps foot in Bastiion, she's inundated with prejudice and hatred, most notably from her fellow al Haidren, Zaethan.

Soon Luscia and Zaethan have to put aside their hatred and judgment in order to find and capture the serial killer.

House of Bastiion is filled with rich and complex world building, morally grey characters, and a fast paced and exciting plot. I'm already excited for book two and cannot wait for more from Luscia and Zaethan.

Disclaimer: I received this book at no cost from the publisher/author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I am leaving a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.

I am pretty much just in awe right now. I just finished listening to the audiobook for House of Bastiion and I feel like my mind might explode.

This book was a massive undertaking and I have to applaud the author for its complexity. The scope of this world and all the world-building the author has accomplished is astounding. While things could get confusing at times, I still very much appreciated the rich culture and intense details that the author included. I love how the plot was executed and how the relationships between characters were formed. I like the concise storytelling the author displays.

I really liked the wide array of characters in this book. Each character was so distinct and authentic. The two main characters were complex and I enjoyed their narratives. I am looking forward to getting to know them even better in the next book of this series.

There wasn't really a romance in this book but there were definite allusions to one forming in future books. Zaethan and Luscia have the makings of an intense enemies-to-lovers romance and I am here for it. This is so most intense slow burn ever.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book and I have to admit that I think that the narrator for this particular story should have been different. The narrator sounds fine and I enjoyed his voice but I felt like I was listening to a textbook the entire time. I think that this book would be better suited to having both a male and a female narrator since there are both POVs in the book.

Overall, this was an imaginative and complex fantasy story that was intriguing and left me wanting more. If you enjoy fantasy stories with vast world-building and multi-faceted characters then you'll want to pick this one up. I am really looking forward to continuing this series.

House of Bastiion: The Haidren Legacy is a unique, exciting and interesting book. For the most part the book is a lot of story building with a great plot that keeps getting better as the story moves along.
The story follows Luscia, as she moves to court in Bastiion to take her seat as the al’haidren to Boreal. She doesn’t exactly receive a warm welcome from the other three al’Haidrens of the quadren. There are some that don’t like her because she is a witch or that she is from Boreal. One of those being Zaethan, the al’Hairdren to Darakai. Luscia and Zaethan do not get along at all despite Dmitri wishing otherwise. Dmitri is the prince of Bastiion who will someday become king. I really liked all the characters but these three the story focused on more and I was good with that. Dimitri is a really nice, calm and caring prince who will make a wonderful king. Zaethan is a more of a tough guy in some ways, although he has a bit of a caring side that he doesn’t show much. This comes from growing up with his father who I did not like. Luscia is stubborn and at times won’t take no for an answer. She does things her own way even if it’s not always the right decision. We don’t really get to know too much about any of the characters or about their background. The author provided just enough to keep me interested though.
Besides the al’Haidrens getting to know each other or at least trying to be civil with each other there are much bigger issues. There is a murder in Bastiion who is killing young cross-castes. While the court is dealing with this, it’s Luscia and Zaethan who are the ones pursing the murder. They both have their own reasons and are not willing to work together to find the guilty person. There is so much more to the plot, the characters and the story but I’m not going to give anything away.
I really enjoyed reading House of Bastiion: The Haidren Legacy. While I enjoyed the entire book the last part with the cliffhanger ending or endings was really good. I am left with a lot of unanswered questions though. I cannot wait to read the sequel and find out what happens next. Overall a wonderful new adult fantasy read!

House of Bastiion from K.L. Kolarich was a transportive and beguiling tale. This story, with it's lush world building and enamoring characters brought me on a journey the likes I have not seen before.

Kolarich had such a wonderful and lyrical way of writing that completely immersed me in this story of a group of young heirs to their respective thrones (their houses, if you will) all being brought together. We learn of many different realms and languages to each their own. They all have certain talents, varying styles of dress, and competing personalities.

This is told in two very unique and very contrasting points of view. We have the heir to Boreal, Luscia and the Darakaian heir, Zaethan. While the two despise one another, they have one common friend. Dmitri, heir to the Orynthian throne, the central kingdom. Though Zaethan is Dmitri's long time friend, Luscia becomes his friend during her stay in Orynthia... Unbeknownst to Zaethan, Luscia is using her incredible powers (powers that Zaethan condemns her for) to help Dmitri in his time of need.

Even though Zaethan and Luscia equally despise one another, they must work together to determine who is the culprit in the ghastly murders of cross-castes, those of split lineage among the four main houses.

I LOVED Luscia. Her bravery and fierceness were unrivaled. She is a witch and a skilled warrior, but one with a tragic past. A past that keeps her from being comfortable with contact via touch from others. I loved how she never backed down from Zaethan's bitter attitude. While, on the flip side, Zaethan was loyal like no other to those he cares about. And as he sees Luscia as a threat, he will stop at nothing to make sure he knows where her intentions lie.

The royal and political systems in this book were amazing and so in depth. The hierarchy was rich and multi-leveled. I simply could not get enough of this incredible read and eagerly await the next book in this highly addictive and intriguing high fantasy series.

House of Bastiion written by the debut new adult fantasy fiction author K.L. Kolarich is the first installment in The Haidren Legacy series. There are two protagonists in the story Luscia Tiergan and Zaethan Kasim. Both Luscia and Zaethan belongs to different houses. They have been an enemy from long time but when their path crossed and they both met in Bastiion, they knew that they have to keep their rivalry aside and form an alliance.

Story is told from multiple perspectives and mostly switches between Luscia and Zaethan. This book introduces readers to the world of Orynthia and different characters that play an important part in the series. I enjoyed the clash and chemistry between Luscia and Zaethan. I appreciate author's vivid imagination in creating the vast world. Fiona Jayde Media has done great work in designing the cover photo of the book. There are many subplots in the story. If you are a fan of fantasy stories with large world building then you could pick this book. Its Worth reading.

I received an eArc of House of Bastiion from the author via Book of Matches Media.

There are a few things that will absolutely hook me when it comes to epic fantasy — great (and intricate) world building, political intrigue, and morally grey characters. Guess what House of Bastiion delivered in droves?

I honestly have nothing but praise for this book. It has a stellar cast of characters, one of the most complex, complete and intricate worlds I think I've ever read, and beautiful prose. The fact that this is K.L. Kolarich's debut is absolutely mind-blowing, and I'm actually in awe of that fact.

It's difficult to tease out particular elements that stand out because the whole book worked so well together, but one of my favourite elements was the fact that none of the characters were perfect or idealised in any way. All of the characters had flaws and made mistakes, and this was all an integral part of who they were. I realise that there is sometimes a time and place for more 2D character tropes, but I do feel that complex characters (especially in high fantasy) can make or break a series — and they absolutely made this book. Luscia is such a strong character, and is one of my all-time favourite female leads.

The only way I can sum up this book is to repeatedly chant 'read it read it read it read it read it' so I guess that's how I'm closing off my review. 10/10 would recommend, 15/10 is going to read again, and yes I did just buy myself the pretty shiny hardcover version so I can do just that, but in paper (so it feels like I'm reading a new book, ya know) what do you mean law school has killed my brain, I'm fine, are you fine?

I want to start this review by letting everyone know that we are facing something very big. K.L. Kolarich is going to give a lot to talk about, I would not be surprised if next year her name resonated with the force of a cannon. House of Bastiion is a simply incredible book, the worldbuilding left me with the mouth open, genuinely stunned. All the work behind these pages is so notorious that I doubt anyone could have any negative criticism for Kait's debut. Her universe is rich, deep and simply splendid. Although the development of the story felt a bit slow for me at times, this did not matter to me because it was able to lay the foundations of the universe and it was really worth it.

Something absolutely great was the extra content of the web. I think this is a great companion to the book and that it is a lot of fun for the reader. Few novels have as much material to read as House of Bastiion, I could only think of Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings. (By the way, don't forget to take the test to find out what house you are from. I am part of the House of Boreal!)

Love every single part: The worldbuilding, the politics, the personalities of the different characters. There is nothing I like more than a good development of a plot from enemies to lovers. My only question, will Kolarich be able to maintain this quality for the next books? I am sooooo looking forward to the next novel and I encourage all of you to read House of Bastiion as soon as possible. I can't wait to get a physical copy. This book is a gem.

I was given an advanced e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

Wow.... I can not wait to see where the author takes us in the next installment of this series. I absolutely loved the world building and the incorporation of the languages she created. I did have to use the glossary a couple of times but I was typically able to interpret the languages otherwise. The book started us right off with a lot of mystery and world building which may be hard for some readers if they like to jump right into a story, however, for me it set it up nicely. The House of Bastiion is told from two perspectives (Luscia and Zaethan) with intermittent chapters as general storytelling to help the reader get a little backstory. It follows Luscia, the al'Hadrien to Boreal as she makes her way to court to take her seat. There she discovers a pattern of children who have been brutally slain and must work with the al'Hadiren to Darakai, Zaethan. Zaethan is extremely superstitious of those from Boreal making this task even more difficult. If you are a fan of enemies to friends, epic world building, and some political intrigue this book is right up your alley.
