A rugged and unfamiliar terrain. A ticking clock.
And a missing woman who doesn’t want to be found.

When a young woman disappears into the wilderness leaving no prints behind, Fox Walker and Nataya are tasked with finding her trail. As the number of days spent searching grows, so does the number of people who are hunting for the missing woman. All of them want to find her. But not all of them want her rescued. And Walker knows that not everyone who goes missing is lost ... or wants to be found.
Time is of the essence, forcing Walker to quickly adapt to the unfamiliar and rugged North Cascade Mountains of Washington State, where weather and terrain have their own schedule. Aided by a young Search and Rescue team member, Walker must also adjust to working with a third person.
Walker's wisdom and years of tracking experience will be challenged in a place both mystical and steeped with legends.

Fantastic read.

This was a great story and the different setting only added to a great story. The new characters were very good and I liked how it shows that people can grow. I have enjoyed the entire Fox Walker series and look forward with anticipation to the next.

Fun read: the kind of book you can read a few pages every evening without getting lost in characters. The series sticks with a family of characters with a few unique additions.
Good, fun story.

This was the fourth book in the Fox Walker series, and although it maintained my interest, the series has become a bit formulaic. As was the case in the first three, Fox Walker and his partner Nataya use their expert outdoor survival and tracking skills to find a woman and her friend, who are threatened by a life or death situation. In this version the reader is acquainted with a third wheel in the tracking crew, Carl. Carl is an outdoor guide, who also serves as a search and rescue team member, and the friend who deploys Fox and Nataya insists that Carl accompany them. In the early stages Fox Walker has difficulty adapting to the third team member, but eventually they command each others respect. Fox is actually a bit jealous of the younger and talkative Carl, as Carl and Nataya hit it off quite well. Carl differs from Fox, in that he takes advantage of modern equipment and technology, and Fox actually acknowledges some of the advantages and reassesses his avoidance of the more advanced tools. Once again the author's writing style is very basic, and she tends to state conclusions that the reader could reach on their own with more sophisticated character development. Nevertheless, the novel held my interest and reached a climactic conclusion.

Indy Quillen writes the bushcraft equivalent of a techno-thriller. I have no idea what the actual genre could be called, but I know a good read when I'm in one.

Quillen is deep in her element throughout ASTRAY, with Fox Walker and Nataya tasked with a long, deep-woods pursuit of Katie, no stranger to the wilds herself. And she has good reasons for not wanting to be found. The mystical elements of the novel pay homage to the Native American traditions shaping its protagonist, and paint a world incorporating realms of power beyond the control we imagine ourselves to exert over nature.

The clash of cultures in this Fox Walker adventure—reverent and harmonious versus self-serving sociopathy—help bring across the evident connection Ms. Quillen feels to her favored environment. Writing with such passion, the results are excellent as one would expect.

If you've not started in on the Fox Walker series, there's no better time to begin.
