Draco Malfoy thought he had reasonable expectations for his mandatory Eighth Year at Hogwarts, where he would be confined to the grounds as part of his probation. Isolation, hatred, and passing his NEWTs were really all he had in mind.
What he wasn't anticipating: 1) Having a small firstie latch onto him like a bloody koala 2) Said firstie adopting an erkling as if they didn’t feed on children.
To protect his little nuisance, he’ll have to seek help from uncomfortable places, including the Swottiest Witch of Her Age. Joy of all joys.
That was such a feel good fic. Really missed those.
I spent a solid half-hour laughing until I cried at this part:
"The mission isn't names Reginald, just the erkling is named that. The mission is Classified Operation Concerning Kneazles, to throw off any eavesdroppers, or rival fractions, otherwise known as C.O.C.K.," Marcus informed him dourly.
Draco's jaw dropped. That was worse than Granger's spewing campaign.
"For reasons I'd rather not explained to you, if you don't already know them, you'll need to change your acronym", he informed them.
Chapter one, Draco making friends with a bubbly little first year girl, sign me up. This is so cute, he calls her "His firstie" AAAAAA I'm melting 🥺 Draco healing by getting to right his wrongs with Sadie, this is genius, single dad vibes. This is disgustingly fluffy and exactly what I wanted. I'm tired of smut, like genuinely so tired of it, this was so pure and fresh and I loved every second of it. I think I'm just in a weepy mood, cause I was crying the entire second half of this book
This story has Newberry Medal quality written all over it. Reading this was like biting into a crisp Granny Smith, sour and bitter at times but ultimately crisp and delicious. I couldn’t help but feel refreshed.
The author has a strong voice and skillful way of weaving words and plot. The concise message and plot allowed for a truly compelling expansion upon deeper themes, while sticking true to the main message - how to forgive oneself and live again.
As for characters, I was pleasantly surprised by the incorporation of original younger, unbiased characters for Draco’s 8th year. It lead for some lovely themes revolving around friendship and rethinking one’s identity.
A masterpiece of healing and redemption. The slow pace of this fic with the firsties, Draco opening up, friendship with Hermione, set back at St. Mungo's, the mind healer, steps towards healing, finally a relationship with Hermione, falling in love, the families coming together. Loved every second. Was listening to 'Worry-Ewan Mainwood' while reading this and it fits so much.
“I could never stop believing in you and your capacity to be the kind, witty, nurturing man you are, but you don’t believe it yet. And I can’t be the only one”

|Thoughts| “This innocent muggleborn girl had chosen a bloody Death Eater to be her guide”
The ‘firsties’ that gravitate to Draco are just so innocently sweet and caring of such a lonely and fragile Draco. It’s sweet to see how they bring out the best in him and are the first cheerleaders of his growing relationship with Hermione.
“After finding out she was miserable at fly inc, Draco took to teacher her. Wouldn’t do for anyone to see such an inept Slytherine”
“For all he was a salty curmudgeon, apparently had a weak spot for his little firstie”
This fanfic also portrayed the other characters fairly accurately. Also, one where Ron doesn’t come across as toxic and only shows a reasonable level of distrust of Draco.
“We’d cause quite the stir, you know. The pureblood and the muggleborn. death Eater and the Golden Girl”
Really enjoyed how Draco and Hermione’s relationship organically grew over time. And how she was someone who was able to look beyond Draco, the Death Eater, when the rest of the wizard community continued to punish Draco for his past actions. And the scene at St Mungo’s was truly heartbreaking.
“Mummy, please.” He whispered
Sadie turns out to be a little Hagrid in the making, with her fascination with deadly creatures. This also makes for some humours moments in the story with Reginald the Erkling.
“Attempting to adopt mister babies who will eat you is a freak out worthy offense”
Also, loved to see Draco’s relationship with his estranged aunt develop in this story. And this one has a slight Christmas vibe to it towards the middle. Draco also shows on multiple occasions how reformed he has becomes with he gestures (Christmas present, position for Hermione’s scar). And the whole ‘I could love you speech’, swoon.
“I could love you, Granger. I could love the way you light up when you talk about books…I could love the way you giggle at my jokes…”
A sweet 8th year at Hogwarts, happily ever after romance with a splash of trauma.
“Is that what you think you are? A monster?
“You love it,” she whispered and Salazar, Godric, and Rowena, this witch was going to be the end of him”
“If he could prevent this one little muggleborn from entering what he’d done to Granger, he would do it”
I love Grumpy but Softie Draco❤️❤️
Ele e a Hermione foram tão FOFOS! O meu coração quase explodiu com tanta fofura!!!!! E nem foi necessariamente só na parte do romance, que só apareceu nos últimos 3 cap, foi mesmo pela amizade deles! I was giggling and kicking my feet like a teenager
draco is a pariah but that doesn't stop a first year muggleborn to befriend him. i love sadie!! it's so fluffy besides poor draco being bullied badly and his ptsd. hurt comfort hermione being his safe space
This was such a feel good fic! Read if u like: Diverse characters, found family/mentorship, slow-burnish, rom-com, characters finally getting therapy 🥲
.Found family .Hurt/comfort .Mental health rep .Friends to lovers .Clean romance
I absolutely loved this one! It was cosy and warm, with tons of funny moments. Despite dealing with heavy topics like PTSD, dissociation, and depression, it still managed to be a heartwarming story.
I really enjoyed the portrayal of some of our favourite characters in this one. With a damaged Draco that is trying so hard to be good, and a compassionate Hermione that will help him along the way. Even Harry and Ron weren't terrible! We also got introduced to a new foursome of characters: Sadie and her gang of first-year misfits. They were simply amazing, and I would love to have books about their shenanigans while growing up at Hogwarts. They could be the next generation in this world.
I loved how the relationship between Draco and Hermione felt so organic. They first become friends, real friends, before anything romantic happens. This fanfic shows how much sense these two characters would have made in the canon books. They share the same interests, they level intellectually, and they both are survivors in their own rights.
My heart went out to Draco, who was in excruciating pain, and no one seemed to care or even think he deserved it. I loved his path to healing and the people who helped him along the way. Even though he was suffering, he made space for the people he loved and took care of them the best he could. It was in his little reluctant acts of kindness towards the first years or the companionship he offered Hermione.
I'm rambling, I know, but it's everything I look for in books or fanfics. And the epilogue was one of the best I've read in a long time. Everything just clicks into place, and you find yourself staring at the last page, not wanting it to end.
Overall a very cute read full of fluff in between longer fics, especially during the Christmas season. I really liked Draco’s gift to Hermione wrapped in gold with a silver ribbon. Gifting a first edition trope is always so lovely. Also the last two ending sentences were beautiful and really fitting to the overall theme of the story.
Some sentences/scenes I liked:
1) (Draco’s answer to Sadie)
“I also got a very sincere apology from Burke this morning.”
“Did you now?”
2)
Merlin, hers was heavy, had the witch never heard of a featherlight charm? He cast it nonverbally then extended her bag to her. “Granger.”
3)
Sadie arrived the following Tuesday with a puff of bright yellow on her shoulder.
“Sweet Salazar, what is that?” She beamed at him. “Draco, meet Draco, my new pygmy puff!”
Draco blinked at her once. Twice. “You...named your absurd ball of fluff after me?”
She grinned at him. “He’s ornery like you! He chirps whenever he’s grumpy, but he’s still so cute!”
4)
Granger chuckled and Draco made a mental note to look up algebra in the library.
5)
Granger slowed again, but he didn’t, until she grabbed his hand. They stopped.
He glanced down at their hands, hers mittened and his gloved, then back up to her.
6)
That’s true, Draco always blushes a bit when you wear your jeans,” Sadie mentioned and Hermione choked on her water.
“What?” she spluttered, her own cheeks red. The parents were all wide eyed, casting each other looks, while Andromeda was smirking slightly.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
“You know, they call her the brightest witch of our age, and they mean her brain, and they’re right, Merlin, she’s brilliant, but...she’s the brightest thing in my life.”
Very different from what I’m used to. I really liked the whole “eight year” concept and I’m definitely going to search for more fics like this. This one is very centered on Draco’s new friends which was also something very unique because usually both friendgroups revolve around what we already know. It also includes a lot of talks on mental health and healing post war which was also something I enjoyed reading about. I think it was a subject really well approached and well written. The only concrete complaint I have is that we end up not knowing anything about Reginald. Like, cmon. The least you could do was include him in the epilogue :/
This book is so cute! It made me feel something, both sadness for Draco and joy for their relationship when it develops near the end of the book. That means I've either got PMS or it was well written... Let's go with well written. I love the little squad of silly first years, they made this book so great
Some plot holes though... why were Draco, Hermione, and Neville back at school for an 8th year but Harry and Ron weren't? What were those two doing if not school? And the mention of house elf milk has been haunting me and given rise to many many questions about the reproductive habits (and rights?) of house elves. Now you may be haunted with this thought too. You're welcome
Draco is back to Hogwarts for is 8th year. All he wants to do is keep his head down and finish out his probation. A tiny, first year Slytherin decides that Draco needs a friend and it’s going to be her. And her three other friends. When the firsties do something they definitely shouldn’t be doing, Draco needs backup to explain why it’s a terrible idea. Enter: Hermione Granger
This is, hands down, one of my favorite fics of all time. I love everything about this fic (even the one chapter that made me CRY)
We don’t rate fanfictions in this house because that is hella disrespectful to these authors that write for free in their free time. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.
This was a feel-good Dramione fic for me, and maybe (probably) because I haven't read Dramione in a while and missed it so much.
It was cute, fun, and a little dark but it wasn't "enough". It could have been a little darker (I like it when it hurts okay?), a little longer (again, I like pain), and a bit more in-depth.
But, all in all, I had fun (which is the most important thing) and this will be my slide back into the dark and wonderful world of Dramione fanfics.
An 8th year at Hogwarts, post war during which a muggleborn Slytherin first year tries to befriend Draco but also tries to befriend a monster known for eating children.
This shorter read was incredibly charming. The younger kids added a lovely dynamic to the budding relationship between Draco/Hermione. Draco is softer in this one, and mental health is discussed a bit.
Cute, low angst, mostly fluff fic. Mind healer sessions, trauma from war and family upbringing, mentions of child and spousal abuse in the Malfoy home. Very little of anyone but Hermione, Draco,Hagrid and the 4 little kids that follow them around like ducklings
My favourite parts were Draco's healing sessions. The relationship build was nice but the ending was rushed. Lots of mentions in the Epilogue that would have made for an even longer cool story.
Awwww, this was such a sweet story! I love the little firsties all deciding that Draco was gonna be their school-dad. 😊 Plus, I'm a sucker for a good healing and redemption arc for Draco with Hermione and her forgiveness and love at the center of it all. The Victory Ball was perfect for bringing in the rest of the Golden Trio more and highlighting the person Draco had evolved into after everything. And the epilogue has all the good feels! 🖤
This was my first "8th year" HP fanfic and I loved that aspect of the story. There was a decent attempt to show complex PTSD and some healing. I thought the portrayals of Draco and Hermione were both very mature and refreshing. The one thing that bothered me in this book was it never clearly explained why Harry and Ron weren't also doing 8th year. Ginny seemed to pop up randomly but wasn't a student either?
Loved this take on Draco and Hermione’s relationship. It really discusses mental health and Draco whereas a lot of the other ones don’t. These kids now adults went through a traumatic period and don’t always get the help they need.
This is such a good story !! So well written! I love the way Draco described his feelings! Really beautiful. I usually hate stories when children are involved, but it was really cute to see Draco mothering.
SOOOOO GOOOD!!!!! This was so sweet and cute. It was the perfect length and pacing but I also could have read more hehe. I lovedddd Draco healing and hearing his POV. I kinda wish we got more Hermione but honestly no notes 10/10. Just cute and sweet and light!!
Such a fabulous fic! I am a sucker for anytime Draco ends up with a first year fan club. Lots of great character development and Draco working through Trauma. The writing was wonderful to the point where I was screenshotting passages that I loved! I will definitely be rereading this one.
This was so freakin endearing! I loved the focus put on Draco’s relationships with the firsts years who kind of adopted him, way before Hermione even appears, as well as the parallele between Draco and cuty pie Reginald.
Dramione. Rated Teen and Up. Mental illness and Trauma is prevalent theme. Draco gets adopted by Slytherin's first ever Muggleborn, she is a first year. HEA. No smut. Tw: child abuse
