Timeless Tales To Ignite Your Mind is a collection of 50 different short stories taken from the vast depository of Indian Mythology and History. Each chapter takes you to the stories of kings, commoners and enigmatic personalities and induce a sense of self introspection with engaging questions about life. Each story is laced with wit, wisdom and humour compelling the reader to reflect upon himself.
My first reaction to this book was, this is the book I can pass on to the next generation. Indeed it's a book that holds so much potential in such simple stories, from Birbal's quick intelligence to Tenali's witty replies and King Vikramaditya's fair equitable reasoning on Betal's mind boggling puzzles. Each chapter is backed by a 'life lesson' at the end, the most satisfying part of this book.
Coming to the writing, it's very simple and lucid but it lacks compassion, the writting felt very dry and monotonous to me. The great thing about this book is the chapters are very short making it a very fast paced book. I finished it in a jiffy. Recommended to beginners.
The stories that we use to hear in childhood have a long lasting impact on our psyche and kind of shapes our personality. They not only infuse a sense of wisdom in us but also improve our way of thinking and assist us in being a more informed individual
I have been very fortunate to have a set of parents who are voracious readers and who introduced me to Gitapress Gorakhpur books when I was merely 6 that inculcated in me a sense of moral responsibility from the very beginning . So when I picked up this book , it helped me even further as it brought back various memories.
The book is a compilation of 50 stories involving many folklores from our culture like Tenali Rama ,Vikram Betal etc with author taking special pains in summarising essential life lessons from each tale individually and also including quotes in the process.
The writing style is superb and the flow is amazing too . The brevity is maintained throughout the book which further increases the engagement of readers. The cover is beautiful and the content definitely complements the title.
This book is a good mix of 50 timeless tales that provides wit and wisdom. The compilation ensures different fascinating tales. We might have already heard some stories like Akbar&Birbal, Tenali Raman, Vikramaditya&Betal from our parents, grandparents and teachers. Some stories mentioned here are not familiar to me. I am sure you are also unaware of them. My childhood nostalgic memories were reading Tenali Raman and some moral stories. They are still etched in my heart.
This book promises an enjoyable read for us readers and learn at the same time. Handpicked tales of noble kings, chief advisors, commoners, and even animals. Each stories conclude with a great life lesson. The tales in here will make you entertain and long for more.
Honestly, i liked reading all the tales and i cannot leave out anything but some tales did adorn more. It gave an extra spark.
My most favourites: 🌟Words Can Win Hearts ❤ In this story, a fisherman gets rewarded by a king for his pure noble gesture of gifting a giant fish. His sweet words had an impact and melted the king's heart. "Words have more power than you can imagine".
🌟Amarlal's Boon🌸 He has a special boon of some skills. He cannot reveal it to anyone. If he does, he will die. One day, his behaviour planted a doubt on his suspicious wife's mind. She insists on knowing what it is. Do you think Amarlal would have revealed? Don't you get curious? Don't wait and pick this book😁 "Do not let anyone, however important, take away your freedom to voice your opinion".
🌟The Most Precious Thing On Earth By doing a prank, the chief advisor, Hemraj proved the king what will remain precious always other than gold, diamond or education under some circumstances. "The simplest things in life are far more precious than the expensive one".
You might be wondering why i had mentioned only few. Because, i want you to know them specifically and get intrigued.
However, this book is not only for children but for us adults too. It's a perfect pick for bed time stories, perfect gifting option for young readers and also for every reader who wish to be nostalgic about their childhood.
Some stories in the book gave me nostalgia, there was a time when I used to read Akbar Birbal tales and small stories which last had a lesson to teach, reading this book bring back those days and it also brought some new stories in my life.
The most interesting ones are those stories which are between Akbar and Birbal, Vikramaditya and betal how he takes the king's words first and then tells him a story with a puzzle and when king Vikramaditya solves it he goes back in his place because he asked for two things one he will smash his head when he will not speak if he has the answer of his question and also if he brakes his promise of speak he will go back.
I would like to recommend this story to kids who can understand English well because they can get lots of education from those stories because each story in the book has some significance in our lives, it gives wisdom and knowledge that helps in our growth.
This book has a compilation of fifty stories we used to hear as kids from our parents for centuries and in this book, the author has brought some of the stories that can be useful to ignite our minds.
After every story in the book author has presented a topic that is Life lessons in which he tells all about the main aspect of that story and what we can understand from it, that portion is full of motivational quotes and statements.
Timeless Tales to Ignite Your Mind by Shubha Vilas is a collection of 50 stories derived from the ancient culture and history of India. Each story tells a moral and teaches us a lesson. Most of these are folktales which are used by generations to convey important life lessons. The art of ancient storytelling is mostly forgotten, especially folktales that are passed down from person to person. The author tries to ignite this tradition with this attempt.
These 50 stories revolve around kings, commoners, animals, and noted personalities such as Vikramaditya, Tenali, Birbal etc. As a reader, I liked these stories very much. They were elegantly written. The message he wants to convey is stressed the story is built around what wants to focus on. Also the life lesson is summarised at the end of each story. What I really liked about these stories is their uniqueness. It is very hard to contain different messages in every story you tell. But the author selected and penned them very skillfully.
The book will capture your attention from the first story itself. And these lessons will stick with us forever.
Indian culture is rich as much as enriching. The strength of it lies in the wisdom imparted in our scriptures and mythology. At first glance it may all seem like plain stories but look closer and you will find a wealth of knowledge waiting to be consumed. Timeless tales to ignite your mind by Shubha Vilas is a book that brings for us 50 such stories from our mythology.
This book brought me back to my childhood. Actually I had developed interest in reading through these fascinating stories of Birbal, Tenaliram, Bikram-Betaal and other mythological stories.
I really enjoyed the short stories in this book. The author has also mentioned lessons from each story which is very thoughtful. As the cover says, this book includes 50 stories and all stories are unique and equally interesting. The language is lucid. Each story is just 3-4 pages long so can be easily finished in less time. The author has done good work for compilation of such wide range of stories.
It can be read by anyone who likes childhood short stories. The children can learn many things from these stories along with developing reading habit. I would recommend to have some pictures for children edition of this book.
This book has an abundance of wisdom from the short stories that are lost in this new world, I am sure some of the stories like of Tenali Ramanan, and Akbar-Birbal will leave you with a hint of nostalgia.
This book is a collection of 50 short stories written in a witty manner as well as has great learning attached to it. Although the stories are short but it makes you really wonder and introspect a lot at times, Stories of Tenaliramana, Akbar Birbal and Vikram Betal surely leave you with a hint of nostalgia, it reminded me of the time when my mother used to tell me all these stories before the bedtime.
The book has stories from ancient India, mythological tales full of wisdom, and the writing style is beginner-friendly plus the book has a life lesson at the end of every story which makes the story impactful and inspiring.
This book is definitely one of the best books I have read so far this year and I will recommend this book to anyone who wants to get out of the sump by reading some witty short stories.
Timeless Tales to Ignite Your Mind: 50 Stories of Wit & Wisdom from Ancient India Timeless Tales to Ignite Your Mind brings together some of the most well-known and the greatest treasures of ancient India. This book reminds me of my school days when I devoured these great stories, and because of them, my reading journey took shape. This book has 50 beloved children's stories such as Vikram Betaal, Sheikhchilli, Tenalirama, Birbal, and a lot more. These timeless tales are the wonderful way to introduce a range of traditional stories from ancient India to the new-age children that taught so many lifelong lessons to them and us adults too. This book is an enchanting collection of the best works in children's literature, this beautifully designed book is not only a must-have for your library but is also perfect for gifting to young kids.
Tenali Rama stories have always been my favorite since childhood. And coming across few of them again in Shubha Vilas's book made me nostalgic. The story "Tit for Tat" is one such story where Tenali once again proves his mattle by providing the exact number of crows in King Krishnadevaraya's kingdom. He also goes ahead and provides justified reason for any differences in the number he thus submitted. The story "Tit for Tat" from "Timeless Tales to Ignite your Mind" is witty and teaches the valuable lesson on asking the right questions. Expect to get back what you give away.
One of the stories which I found most amusing was the one where a saint once adviced a rich business tycoon that the latter's son isnt dead as one's soul cant be killed. However, when the same saint's goat had died he went on crying uncontrollably like an ordinary man and was beyond any consolation. The moral of the story, as mentioned in the foot note, is how easy it is for people to give advices to others but how difficult it is for them to follow their own advices. Thus, it is important for us to follow the advice with justful actions before we preach it with words. - Empty Words, Timeless Tales to Ignite your Mind by Shubha Vilas published by Jaico Books.
Shubha Vilas in his anthology of 50 timeless folktales shares wisdom through art of storytelling. The stories are full of wit and brilliance. The notes added at the end of each story impals the reader to dive deep and reflect upon each anecdote. The panchatantra tale of the donkey and the lion is the most amusing one. It also teaches a lesson that if someone is good at their work then appreciation, respect, fame, etc will follow automatically, there is no need to brag or boast about it.
What is more important? Luck or Hardwork? In the short story "The Egg or the Chicken" King Vikramaditya sets out to find the answer to the age old question of what is more important between luck and hardwork. The anthology "Timeless Tales to Ignite your Mind by Shubha Vilas" is a collection of 50 such witty and intelligent tales which are not just thought provoking but are also full of life lessons. The author has handpicked these stories from fables of Panchatantra, Vikram-Betaal, Tenali Rama, Akbar-Birbal, Gopal Bhar-Krishnachandra etc to intrigue a reader's mind.
I was truly drawn to "The Golden Silence" from Shubha Vilas's book of short stories "Timeless Tales to Ignite your Mind". This story emphasises on the essence of silence. Silence is as important as speaking is, if not more. This book was my book club's September Book of the Month and I am really glad I got a chance to read it. If you are looking to read something that will blow your mind, then this is the book you need to pick.

Things I Liked -:
1. The Theme - The best thing about this book are the collection of stories it share. Although I've heard some of the stories before, but when i re-read the stories again it just made me feel refreshed & made me remember about my childhood days when I use to hear stories like these from my grandfather during my holidays. But I felt something different inside when I read those same stories again, i got to think about it from a different perspective. During our childhood we don't use to think much about the moral of the stories but when I read it today i understood many new & life changing morals from it, in fact many of them perfectly apply in our today's world. I honestly thanks the author for making a book based on our folktales which many of use have forgotten.
2. The Stories - So many of you might have read or heard the stories before but still i want to talk about it as its the 2nsd best thing about the book. It just made me feel weird like how can stories based/written hundred of years ago still applies perfectly on us. in fact when i think about the morals the stories share i feel guilty like why i didn't understood these stories during our childhood. Coming to the tales it has 50 different tales to fulfill your desire of nostalgia. Each story is related to some legendary Indian character & yes these characters are real characters so you wont fel like its fictional or illogical.
3. Morals - All of the story end with a question which will compel you to think about the story and to think about the moral its trying to tell you. Each story hides a life lesson behind it & those lessons are practical in real life too. Some stories will make you feel smile from inside some will make you think about your own identity and some will just left their mark in your mind.
4. Narration - Kudos to the author for such a fluid narration he used in retelling these stories in his modern & unique way. I actually never felt this much refreshing after reading a book, you know i just wanted to read more and more & didn't want it to complete. I honestly think that the writer should write a 2nd part of this book. I'm not over saying its actually pretty easy to understand and relatable to our life
5. Language - One of the easiest book I've read. The book is written in a way that even a kid can read it. Nothing more to say about it. Its perfect for every age group
Things I didn't Like -:
1. I loved authors idea of compiling old stories but i think actor could've added his unique way to made it more modern as i think today's kids won't show any interest in reading old stories. I know it has everything but still I see this as a book for everyone but i think its a bit behind in being the book for all.
Final Thoughts -: This is the best book I've read this year, YES the best. It has everything a book need. It can impress the reader of any genre. The presentation of the stories, the fluid narration, the simple language used it simply has everything what can I say more. Simply a book for everyone.

The tagline of the book attracted me the most that says, “50 stories of wit and wisdom from ancient India.” The book is collection of fifty stories from ancient India. Not just stories but the moral stories. That reminded me of my childhood reads of Panchatantra and Akbar- Birbal stories. I will briefly summarise the blurb of one or two stories that will give you idea about the book. The first story is of Power of thoughts. Love attracts positive vibes and hate attracts negative vibes. Buddhiveer is the protagonist of this story. One day he was taking monthly tour of kingdom with King. King ordered him to take down some part to a mansion because the road looks asymmetrical. That was a rich man’s house standing there for years. Buddhiveer called that man and asked about if he received had any negative thoughts for king. And through this he solved the matter. My next favourite story is the goal of meditation. When Betal was narrating the story of King Jwalasen to King Vikramaditya. When Jwalasen lost his kingdom and Luxury in gambling and met a sage. He gave him a powerful Mantra. That story teaches us how the destiny is shaped. Read the book to unfold further. I liked the stories. They are witty and quick and short reads. I liked the moral part that is “life lessons” at the end of the each chapter. The narration style of the author is crisp and captivating. The stories are fast paced. I enjoyed reading it a lot. They reminded me of my childhood. Overall good one. Strongly recommended from my side.
The book's slogan, "50 stories of wit and wisdom from ancient India," piqued my interest the most. The book contains fifty stories from ancient India. Not only stories but moral stories as well. That reminded me of reading Panchatantra and Akbar-Birbal stories as a youngster. I'll summarise the blurbs of one or two pieces to give you a sense of what's in the book. The first tale is about the power of one's ideas. Love draws positive energy, whereas hatred attracts bad energy. Buddhiveer is the main character in this narrative. He went on a monthly tour of the kingdom with the King one day. Because the road seems asymmetrical, the King ordered him to demolish a portion of it to make way for a mansion. That had been a wealthy man's home for many years. Buddhiveer called that individual and inquired whether he had any unfavourable ideas about the monarch. And it was via this that he was able to resolve the issue. The purpose of meditation is my next favourite story. When Betal was telling King Vikramaditya the account of King Jwalasen. Jwalasen met a guru after losing his kingdom and luxury through gaming. He bestowed to him a strong Mantra. That narrative shows us how fate is formed. To learn more, read the book. I enjoyed the story. They are quick and short reads that are funny. I like the "life lessons" section after each chapter. The author's narrating style is clean and compelling. The storylines move quickly. I thoroughly loved reading it. They brought back memories of my youth. Overall, it's a nice one. From my perspective, it comes highly recommended.
The title is well suited. These stories are definitely going to ignite your mind.
I still remember some of the tales I read in my childhood and how much impact they had on me. The tales of Akbar Birbal, Cinderella, The three little pigs, Robinhood etc. were the great part of my childhood.
The author Shubha Vilas has compiled some fascinating stories in this book. It consists of 50 short stories. Each story leaves you with a life lesson and questions that make you think about the way you see life.
The best thing about the book is every story is presented as a teaching. Every story has something to learn from. Stories are the best way to learn something and has the power to change you. These stories are educating and the writing style is engaging. I enjoyed reading all the stories, but some of them became my favourites- The ignorant pig, The eyes see what the mind knows, Past life of donkeys, Words can win hearts, The mosquitoes petition, and Empty words.
The book is entertaining and refreshing. You can keep this book with you everyday and read 1-2 stories per day. It will lighten up your mood and also make you learn something.
Reading this book reminded me of my childhood days when I used to read such stories. Now, it’s your chance to again find joy and peace in these tales like you did in your childhood.
• “We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorns have roses”.
o An individual’s life is marred with many harrowing circumstances in one’s life and what decides his/her fate is the fact that how much of wit and intelligence is applied to the situation. Over the years, the above stated aspect has been harped upon us through various mediums including fiction as well and carrying the same tradition, the 236 pages long book at hand comes into foray. Further, the book features 50 Chapters as is aptly clear from the book’s title itself. The first chapter of the book is titled “Power of Thought” and the chapter begins with a poignant quote which states that thinking ill of someone brings ill in one’s own life and encapsulates the same in a story format featuring a King and the Chief Minister with the underlying conclusion being that vibrations are caused by one’s thought entailing various things including bad things as well. As the chapters go further, the underlying theme of the book stays the same and presented in a story format.
o The writing style of the book has been kept simple and easy to understand and the clarity aspect seems to be the major highlight of the book. The language used remains to be simple and consistency is maintained in the presentation of the book’s theme, thus making it a must read for anyone willing to go for an insightful read.
Timeless Tales To Ignite Your Mind is an interesting and engrossing collection of 50 short stories that endeavours to ignite the mind through the lost folklores of ancient India.
All the stories here have been masterfully crafted and very well told with each one being quite unique in itself. Despite their short length, they keep the readers intrigued and don't fail to leave a mark on their minds and souls. The descriptions of people, places and things seems vivid and the readers could easily visualize everything. All the characters sound promising and the readers could easily resonate with them. What makes this book further special that it would serve as nostalgia for the previous generations who grew up hearing and reading these stories. It in a way rekindles this lost tradition of imparting life changing lessons through simple short stories. Simple and easy to understand language has been employed throughout its writing. The cover of the book looks attractive and title goes very well with its content. Another remarkable feature of this work is the unique lessons that the author tries to impart by end of every story.
Overall for me it was quite an amazing read! The writer has done commendable job in compiling and retelling these stories in this digital era. Though all the stories here are equally intriguing my personal favourites include The Strange Ghost, Interpreting Brahma, The Burden of Guilt, Betrayed By God, Tit for Tat etc.
Since ancient times, India has been known for its treasures. But other than gems and spices, we also hold a rich taste in literature, folklore and other things that clearly show the wisdom of the people. These wisdoms are well expressed through short stories that are excellently crafted by talented storytellers of our ancient India. The bedtime stories and songs aka loris sung by our mothers are inspired by these stories that are easy to understand for all age groups and people can derive the hidden lesson without much effort.
Timeless Tales To Ignite Your Mind by Shubha Vilas is the same type of novel that has collected 50 famous short stories from our childhood bringing those sweet memories back. The book consists of riddle stories of Vikram- Betal as well as the humor filled actions of Gopal. The best thing is that at the end of each story, the author added a short note of lessons derived from the text. This way the book became more insightful.
The stories are inspired from mythologies, kings, animals that can talk and many more. The book is written in a straightforward manner. Each of the stories are only 3-4 pages long making it a perfect short read. Readers can enjoy one story or several at a time. I will specifically suggest this book for kids. It can be perfect for night time stories.
When I completed this book by @shubhavilas I felt as if I am holding my childhood in my hand. The book is no doubt an inspirational step towards preserving the legacy of ancient India. Through 50 amazing and fascinating tales, the author speaks about different lessons one has to learn in life.
Almost all of these were part of my childhood. These characters – Vikram Betal, Tenali Rama and Akbar Birbal etc were the first fictional characters I had been enchanted with. So you can imagine how delightful it must have been for me to revisit them.
Each of the stories ended with a small paragraph – a personal touch of the author- highlighting the moral values. To be very honest initially I was so sucked into reading that I had skipped the paragraphs for a few chapters. But then the values on love and respect really got to me. I made sure to read all of them and soon most of the pages were getting marked.
This is one of those books that I shall always keep with me. This shall be passed onto my nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters. In fact I would love to narrate it to them.
One story I really liked was the first one itself : Power of Thoughts which speaks about how positive thinking can really help in manifesting your dreams. Since I have actually seen it working, I really loved its story version.
Timeless Tales to Ignite Your Mind is a compilation of 50 short stories with moral lessons. As I picked up the book, I realized, that there is no age limit for reading such wonderful yarns. The cover and the tagline tempted me so much that I delved straight into it.
The stories were very beautiful and heart warming with morals brimming out. There was so much to learn in it. Full of wit ,wisdom and life lessons made me nostalgic. I floated back to my childhood days when I used to spend hours listening to Jataka and Panchtantra stories from my grandparents. Two stories that caught my attention the most were: The Ignorant Pig- giving a detailed reason for living in dirty areas. Though the reason put up may not be a fact, but was enough to strike our senses. The second story was: The Eyes see What the mind knows. Fear and its consequences are well brought out through this tale. Fear comes out as a worst enemy if not controlled, this lesson proves to be very helpful. I enjoyed the simple and easy language used in the book. The pacing was not very slow nor very fast, and this calls for a thumbs up. I also enjoyed the little life lessons that were added at the end of each story. All together it was a highly informative and interesting read. Highly recommended for all.
