I'm a bit over halfway and I think I'm done. I like powerful women and this seemed like it might be that. Unfortunately, not so much. I often wonder why it is that authors present interesting women with some power but then put her right next to a guy who is better than her at literally everything.

And it isn't helping that she catches every bad break. If an unlucky thing happens, it happens to her. Like, we've established that she's a great marksman, but when a bad thing shows up and a good shot is absolutely needed, she fumbles not one, not two, but three entire shots and they end up chasing the thing away rather than actually handling it.

I finally had enough when the author asks us to take Kai pranking her after an emotionally intimate scene as proving his emotional intelligence by providing a way back to their normal. So I'm being told that it isn't a betrayal of the new intimacy, but rather a sensitive and maybe even kind thing to prank her when she's had a really bad time? So I have a heroine who isn't powerful and what power she has is undermined by fate/circumstances over and over again accepting crappy behavior like it's a favor from a guy who barely tolerates her and hasn't, to this point, said a kind or supportive thing to her?

The thing is, Blythe has made her so lonely that even his bad attention is better than her status quo so I can totally see why she'd tolerate it. I can understand it, but I don't have to like it.

So in my head, I'll have her tolerating Kai until she finds nice people who don't suck and makes friends and builds a found-family that she can trust with intimate moments without being pranked back to emotional distance. I'll give the story in my head four stars for the rocky start and having that Kai character be a holding place for so long. But I'll give this story one star for promising me a strong female lead and then delivering Aranya.

My goodness, this was a doozy. Talk about intense! 😂

Aranya is a sassy one, and I love it. Plus her relationship with her grandfather is SO precious! Kai is… well, Kai. While the pranks were definitely a bit much for me at times, the rivals/enemies part was incredibly well done.

Despite Aranya & Kai’s chemistry, this book doesn’t *quite* hit the stage of a romantic relationship between them - almost but not quite. However, their loyalty & budding friendship was 👌🏻

Also, Delan added a fantastic dynamic to the trio as the father figure/sidekick!

I’m excited see how what comes next for these characters!!

I could not put this book down!! I loved it so much and have already started the second one!

The chemistry between the characters is everything and the plot kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time!

I've had this book on my kindle for a while and now I'm kicking myself for not reading it sooner.

I honestly don't have words right now...

I'm mad at this book because while it wasn't TERRIBLE and kept me reading, it was also just frustrating??? Like how can the author not realize how often she's made her characters smile, grin, and smirk? If I hadn't already returned the book, I'd look into how many times each word was used. I just antsy just using said too many times in my writing but clearly that isn't a concern here. Good lord.

Anastasis has done it again. I looooved Maiden of Candlelight and Lotuses and I am so glad I got to return to Zheninghai in this super sweet rivals to lovers YA fantasy.

I rarely like the enemies to lovers trope because I just can't stand the toxicity of hating someone so much that you're attracted to them... It's not my thing. But the way Kai and Aranya were pitted against each other, while having to also cooperate, insulted each other while also being loyal to each other was just the beeeeessssstttt. The hatred at the beginning was more at the situation than at the person.

I always love family dynamics and this one had both sweet (the grandpa) and scary (Kai's psychotic family).

I loved the side characters, Ye Ye and Delan. Delan's reactions to Aranya and Kai's bickering was so hilarious, and even though he was their superior he felt like the sidekick. Super protective of his comrades.

I loved how Kai found little ways to be kind and helpful to Aranya behind her back.

I loved that Aranya had her moments to be fierce and take care of herself despite her perceived limitations (quite like Liena in Maiden). The scene with the villain near the end gave me chills, but she was so strong despite being alone against more than one stronger adversary, but Kai still got to rescue her a few times as well.

It's just really well done, where the female lead has a good balance of holding her own and being rescued. A lot of writers struggle to find that balance.

I really need to know what happens next and I'm so excited that I don't have to wait an eternity to read the next book!!

I will read everything Anastasis writes. She's just so talented.

4.5 stars rounded up 🌟🌟🌟🌟💫

I've been meaning to read this for a while and I finally got the chance! (PS this book is free on Kindle as of today! 02/17/23)

I will readily admit to being a fan of the rivals to lovers tripe because, more often than not, it adds a certain chemistry that is typically very enjoyable to read. This one delivered for sure! Aranya and Kai's little snips at each other really were wonderful and the slow addition of affection to these snips was marvelously done.
The beginning, I was a little unsure, mainly because everything seemed stacked against Aranya and I like my main leads, typically, to be a little more evenly matched, especially for a rivals to lovers book. We got there eventually, but with the landlord and Kai's magic and Qigang all very ready to smack down Aranya and every second the first few chapters were a little difficult.

One thing I very much appreciated too was the somewhat dual pov. Especially since our cocky Shi Kai fell first, it was a treat to peak into his head and see his affection for Aranya and then see Aranya's utter confusion.

Anyway, very much enjoyed it! Not a perfect book, but a thrilling ride to be sure

I loved this book so much! The world was rich and deeply layered, the characters were flawed but still lovable. The romance was simmering, and the tension was real. The magic system was fascinating and honestly, I should read the prequel because I'm pretty sure that describes it in more detail.

This book hit on some of my favorite tropes, enemies to lovers, rivals forced to work together. Everyone else around the couple shipping them while they themselves hate the idea of being with the other. I loved the Kai, Aryana, Delan trio, that was probably my favorite part of the whole book not going to lie.

So, I thought this series was going to be a bunch of standalones connected by the larger world but after the open ending of this book I'm now a lot less sure. I hope I get more Kai and Aryana in the next book (and Delan too, Delan had better be there).

I received a copy of this book from the author, all opinions, however, are my own.

Charming fast-paced fun

This was a delightful, fast-paced story with great worldbuilding and fun characters. Between the different magics and the political ongoings, Zheninghai felt like a fully fleshed out world, like you could step into one of its cities and experience it for yourself.

My favorite character is definitely Aranya. Reckless as she was, her heart was always in the right place, and her care for her grandfather was so sweet. I was rooting for her to make the right choices at the end, and seeing her growth was so satisfying!

Kai was highly entertaining as well. The perfectly cocky flirt. His and Aranya's banter was great, and I look forward to unraveling his secrets in the next book.

Looking forward to the next book's release in a few days!

Loved reading this book! There were a few moments that truly made me laugh out loud while reading. The characters interactions are beautifully written to set up for the enemies to lovers ☺️ this is a fast read, very action packed and full of witty banter. You can easily finish in one sitting.
The only reason I gave 4 out of 5 stars were small personal preferences. The geography and where everything is located in relation to each other was very confusing. I would have loved a map so I could follow the journey they take a bit more clearly. I also wish the magic system was a bit more laid out to understand the scopes of powers but that can be explored and explained more in future books 😍

Type: Fantasy and Romance
Ease of read: 4/5
Spice: 2/5
Age range: YA

This was a great book I did not want to put it down, I need to know what happens. This is going to be a 6 book series and I just don’t know if I can wait for the next.

The character and world building are incredible and your emotions are thrown on a roller coaster so get ready for the ride.

Aranya and Kai are thrust together competing for the same job as warden. They have to prove which of them is worthy, but feelings might get in the way. Aranya is an open book, bubbly, and determined to make her Ye Ye (grandfather) proud; Kai has a secret and cold as ice on the outside.

Tag along on their journey filled with moments of attack first ask questions later, slow burn, deceit, and magic!

Rivals to lovers
Guy falls first
One bed

I can not wait to see where this trail leads in book 2!

I was given an ARC to provide a review. This review is my honest opinion of the book.

Plot- Fabulous plot with lots of action and a developing mystery of political intrigue that the main characters are tying to unravel.

Writing - Great.

Characters- I like the FMC a lot. The MCC, Kai, is also likable even tho he is kind of arrogant and rude to Aranya sometimes. He is also somewhat of a womanizer, which is a hurtle he will have to overcome in order for me to believe that his affection for Aranya is sincere and abiding.
As for side characters, I especially love the grandpa, Ye Ye, as well as their colleague and superior, Delan. Even the villains were good, round characters.

Romance- Their developing romance was good but not entirely satisfying. I’m not a fan of this type of enemies to lovers, where the MCs are constantly bickering. It gets old, and I like to see more tenderness and thoughtfulness.

The MMC was actually rather inconsiderate sometimes, like making her sleep on the floor while he took the bed, criticizing her muscular shoulders, complaining that she talks too much, and saying other sharp things to her. I love teasing interactions, but these did not feel teasing. There was no flirty banter, only arguing, which I didn’t particularly enjoy. If there had been more softness in their interactions, esp when they were actively working together and helping each other, I would have liked the romance more.

That’s not to say he was a complete jerk all the time. There were redeeming moments for sure. Thankfully, he did show kindness sometimes and that really ratcheted up at the end. It’s ends in a cliffhanger and they have high chemistry. I’m looking forward to Book 2.

By the way, I loved some of the tropes in this romance, including a jealous/angry “He kissed you?!!” and a “Did he hurt you?” scene. :)

Content-

Language- no swearing.
Spice- one kiss. Clean.
Substance abuse- none
Violence- hand to hand combat.
Cover- good
POV- dual POV third person
Cliffhanger- yes, this is the first half of a duology.
Format- KU

How I rated the series-
#1) Guardian of Talons and Snares - 4 stars
#2) Warrior of Blade and Dusk - 4 stars
*end of duology, beginning of trilogy*
#3) Princess of Shadows and Starlight - 3 stars
#4) Captive of Twilight and Treachery - 1.5 stars
#5) Daughter of Darkness and Dreams - 1.5 stars

An immersive fantasy romance that will capture your heart

The Guardian of Talons and Snares; The Zheninghai Chronicles by Anastasis Blythe is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I can confidently say I’m hooked on her writing. I found the story to be enrapturing, and I can’t wait for the rest of the series to come out. The genre of this book is a fantasy romance, and I would call this a clean and heartwarming romance, without any hint of a love triangle.

The author painted vivid descriptions of the Eastern setting, while developing immersive characters that were interesting to get to know and understand their motivations. I really enjoyed the different personalities of the main characters, and how they were able to balance each other with their different talents. I also liked the magic in the world, and how it seems to manifest differently from person to person.

Overall I’m really impressed with this book. The Guardian of Talons and Snares truly hit all of my wants in a book through a well developed fantasy world, a clean and endearing romance, interesting characters with fun dialogue, and a solid plot full of intrigue and mystery. Anastasis did a fantastic job with this book, and I’m really looking forward to the remainder of the series.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

2025 audiobook re-read:
I still quite enjoy this book. The audio narrators did a great job and made for a fun re-read. ☺️

Original 2022 review:
I had so much fun reading this book! Ever since reading Maiden of Candlelight and Lotuses I have been intrigued by the work Blythe has created! It’s magical!

I love Blythe’s writing style. She is so descriptive she immerses you right into the world. There is action, suspense, and of course sweet and swoony romance. ☺️
I appreciate the cleanliness of the romance without making me uncomfortable by being too descriptive. I can swoon without feeling guilty. 😉

I’m excited to keep reading Blythe’s works and to continue with the Zheninghai Chronicles!

Guess who found a new favorite author to obsess over? No points for guessing correctly.
I devoured this book in 2-3 days, which has been hard as a working adult, and I adored every second. This fantasy novel has it all: magic, fighting, action, mystery, monsters, and a slow-burn enemies to lovers romance (with all the angst and bickering that comes with two young adults). I loved every second of the snappy writing, the mystery behind Kai's family, and Aranya's selfless side.
On the action side, you'll never be disappointed. Every chapter seems to come with a fight of some kind, and it's awesome to witness the unique magic Kai and Aranya wield. Seeing their Academy training on full display was awesome, but witnessing their mistakes as they tried (and failed) to work together was even more entertaining.
The plot was also fascinating. We have Kai and Aranya's relationship of course (more on that in a bit), but there are secrets with Kai's family that permeate a lot of this novel. Not to mention the kidnappings and wielders defecting from the Academy across the kingdom. It was both fun and frustrating to be left mostly without answers, but right at the end, you learn a lot to tie things together. (Which is making me so antsy for the next book!)
Now onto my favorite part—Kai and Aranya as a couple! They certainly don't seem like a typical couple because they have legitimate reasons to strongly dislike the other person (hate is a bit strong), but after working together, they start to realize that maybe they don't entirely dislike their comrade. It's a riot to watch them bicker and fail to work effectively together, but seeing them reveal their softer sides was so rewarding. (Kai helping her with Yee Yee was beyond adorable, and Aranya seeing Kai being loyal and charming was so fun to watch.) With Kai's cool head and Aranya's tendency to be headstrong and rash, they make a surprisingly good team when they work at it.
My one flaw and serious praise of this book was how Aranya was portrayed. She's patient, kind, and loving with her grandfather, but an absolute hotheaded nightmare to work with, so I was torn between wanting to tell her to shut up and L I S T E N but also wanting to hug her. She's definitely a flawed heroine, and Kai is an excellent balance for her.
Overall, I loved this entire book, and the one real downside is that it's not completed yet. When book two comes out, I'll be first in the (figurative) line!

I received this book as an ARC and let me just tell you, it was quite enjoyable to read.

There was a lot of action, story development and the banter between the two main characters after they meet is so funny. It is dual POV so if that's something you like, there you go. It ends on a cliffhanger but it's good enough for me to want to read the second book.

Aranya, the FL, is finally out of the Academy and is assigned to work as a warden at Zushui Wardpost. She is a partial shifter and the sole caretaker for her grandfather so she really needs this job to work out. When she arrives though, she finds out that the position she wants, is one she has to compete for against Kai. Kai, the ML, is a cocky, broody evanescer. He has secrets that are revealed later on in the book, but when these two are together, explosions. (enemies to lovers anyone?)

The beginning was a bit slow for me, but the action picks up fairly quickly. I was hooked though as soon as Delan joined their group. If I was to describe him, he's the one in the group that watches the two people who keep bickering back and forth, and just huffs out his irritation saying "just freaking kiss already!". They all end up on a secret mission that is funny, aggravating, and action packed. All three of them have the perfect dynamic.

Kai and Aranya's love/hate relationship has a sweet development and I can't wait to see where they end up.

While the story was engaging to me to an extent with a fast paced plot and some good action, I found this book to be not exactly my taste, partially due to the inconsistent world building and I wasn't really feeling the characters. Our heroine, Aranya is disadvantaged due to being only a partial shifter, but it feels like it's pounded in a lot. She's got a lot of fierce determination though and that she cares for those around her. Kai, the male protagonist, comes off as a mysterious and brooding man from wealth, but I did like that he did have a practical joker side to him. There was some chemistry with the two, and while some of it was fun, others didn't quite land for me, like rushed and forced romance. However, if you're a fan of a lot of the popular romantasy tropes, it's got just about all of them. The plot does move at a fast pace, but it felt like it bounces around a little too much. To be honest, it took me a while to get into the story, but the last quarter of the book was fascinating and caught my interest. I do like the mystery presented and to be honest, I wanted a little more focus on that in the story. The world building does have potential, but I wish some of it was fleshed out more, and I got lost at times due to the lack of detail. I'm sure this is going to be an intriguing read for those that love the sub genre, but for me, it wasn't a new favorite.

I loved this book it was a well written story with the start of a romance I am really looking forward to reading more soon. The characters were amazing I especially loved Aranya and Kai they had great chemistry even if they clashed on many other things looking forward to where that goes next. I liked Aranya for her tenacious will and her care for other people like the love she has for her grandfather I also like how strong she is in many ways but I like that the story doesn't make her too strong to need help. I liked Kai for how even if he tries his best to antagonize Aranya his concern for her shows through no matter what looking forward to reading more. I loved the story it starts with Aranya needing this appointment as a warden since she needs to take care of her grandfather she goes there finds another there named Kai they clash they go on patrols things go wrong they rescue a ungrateful girl so they go to find missing people many other things happen Aranya is hurt they now know where to head looking forward to reading more soon.

Completely hooked...
I can't get enough of this fantastic world this author has built. I absolutely loved the prequel of this series and loved now meeting Aranya and Kai. Aranya is a partial shifter putting everything on the line to secure the well-being of her beloved grandfather. She is reckless and hot headed, but has a heart as pure as gold.

Kai is her unsuspecting rival when he shows up to take the assigned warden position she was offered after graduation. He is brooding and flippant with an attitude of 'only me'. Hiding from his family and their secrets he can't afford to let Aranya have the post no matter her good intentions. But when they are thrown together on a mission, the reckless and brooding find something else may be growing between them. Something far more dangerous than blades or claws.

This story left off on a definite partial cliffhanger and I am eagerly anticipating the next book's release. December seems so far away. Highly recommend this read for any fantasy lover it truly is a gem you won't want to miss!!!

I loved this book, the world, and characters. Blythe does an amazing job of the amount of detailed world and character building. The descriptions really immerse you into the world of Zheninghai.

This book is full of action and magical encounters. So many amazing tropes and topics including enemies to lovers, one bed (kinda), rivals forced to work together, strong/snarky MCs, pranks, etc make up this story. I could feel the tension between Kai and Aranya. My favorite part of the book is their bantering and pranks but also the tender moments. The trio of Kai, Aranya, and Delan was definitely my favorite parts of the book.

I'm so happy I found this book and can't wait for the next one!

The romance. The tension. The rival-to-lover trope. The stake and suspense. It is so all good!! I loved this book so much!! I loved getting to know this world better through the eyes of different characters and I loved seeing how the previous book connects to this one. Ms. Blythe was so ingenious as she plotted this whole series out! I cannot wait to see what is next for Kai, Aryana, and Delan...these three being stuck working together was probably my favorite part of the series. On a side note: I totally relate with Aryana in wanting to talk when there is silence while traveling...it is so boring if there is no communication. 😂

This one was so, so good! I'm still kinda blown away by the epic ride this story was, and I'm so down for each of the following books in the Zheninghai Chronicles. 😍 Seriously, this is one of the best and truest enemies-to-lovers stories I've read in a while. There's definitely angst, the rivalry is prominent throughout the whole book between Sun Aranya and Shi Kai, but it makes the slow-burn romance all the sweeter, especially with all of those sparks flying (while the reader silently wishes they will fan into more). Seriously, there are so many highlighted moments I enjoyed and loved about this book, but I'll only leave here my favorite word/phrase ever: "your (fluffy) grandcat". Say what? Are we talking shapeshifters and such? Oh yes, the blend of magic and fantasy was beautifully done, and it makes for a page-turning, heart-stopping reading experience. Be prepared to stay up late and want to finish this one as soon as you can while also dreading finishing it too soon. I mean, relatable characters that you can't help but cheer or feel for, dual POVs, action, pranks, intrigue, sweet romance, and a kiss worth waiting for? What more can one possibly ask for? I seriously can't wait for the next!! ❣️ ~ 5 stars and completely recommended!

Anastasis really delivers a solid world filled with magic and intrigue. Sun Aranya is a gutsy heroine full of heart. Kai is your outwardly confidant but broody hero with a heart of gold. Their constant banter was fun to read. Their slow progression to friends played out well without feeling forced.
Definitely looking forward to the 2nd book.
