A wonderful book, 10 stars! Kane was a self-taught artist who stumbled into success in the art world around the age of 70. This book was narrated to journalist Marie McSwigan who published it several years after Kane's death.
Kane was born in Scotland and emigrated to the US. This book follows his journey around the US, chasing work, in the mines, the mills, the railroads, anywhere he could get it. There is great history and observations about the nature of work during the early 1900s. Although he had an early talent for drawing, it was only after getting paid to paint railroad cars and then later houses that Kane worked on his own artwork. He lived in poverty nearly all his life and had such little formal education.
The book was inspiring as well as a trove of great historically-important observations about work, art, and life.
