The woman lies so still as her blood soaks into the soft bedcovers beneath her. A tear runs down her face as she looks at the wedding band on her finger. She had loved her husband so much…
When Detective Amanda Steele unexpectedly reconnects with an old boyfriend, the last thing she expects to see lying on his bed is the dead body of his wife, Claire, who walked out on him four years ago.

Or is he using his connection to Amanda to get away with murder?
Determined to uncover the truth, Amanda retraces Claire’s last steps and finds that she visited her best friend the day before her death. But Amanda is devastated to discover that the friend died in a car accident just hours after meeting with Claire. What deadly secret connected them, and could more women be in danger?
But the killer is closer than Amanda realises, and when her beloved daughter, Zoe, is threatened, she’s suddenly in a race to find the final clue before the person she loves most pays the price…

Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. IYKYK, my reviews are always honest.
One sentence review: Tolerable until 60%, then I had to dig deep to finish this one
SYNOPSIS
Det. Amanda Steele is just tryna get some with her ex Logan but finding his ex-wife Claire dead in lingerie puts a hamper in her plans. Convinced of Logan's innocence, Steele and her partner Trent dig into Claire's past to determine who the real killer is.
MY OPINION
Ok so imagine Criminal Minds... now imagine instead of watching oddly sexy Hotch (no questions pls) and the gang, you're just reading a script of Criminal Minds. That's what this book was like. It was giving me absolutely nothing emotionally. Watching my dog stare out the window imagining a life of freedom stirs more emotions than this book. 90% of it is straight up dialogue, and there wasn't an adjective or adverb in sight.
There were more descriptions about the airflow of the car's AC and general hot as balls Virginian weather than there were about anyone's emotional reaction to all the batshit crazy stuff happening. Well, that's not true, we did get to read "chills ran up Amanda's arms" about 40 times.
At first I found this tolerable because we were blazing through the plot and there were lots of reveals, but eventually my patience wore thin. This book was as flat as the European scholars during the Middle Ages presumed the world to be. The last 40%, as my friend and fellow Goodreader Karly said, was dud city. Nay, it was the province of dud. The continent of dudliness.
This was my first Det. Steele novel but I was confused as to why she even adopted Zoe?? She had no time for her and was constantly yeeting her off to her sister. Also the chapter - yes an ENTIRE chapter - dedicated to their pizza night was so painful to read that the fact I got through it proves I could survive Guantanamo Bay levels of torture. Yes, THAT painful.
Ok I'm going to end this #livelaffluv review with an excerpt so terrible it's almost a hate crime against literature:
Amanda felt chilled, but it wasn't because of the car's air conditioning. ...PLZ SAY SIKE
PROS AND CONS
Pros: the case itself was interesting
Cons: this was great value Alafair Burke, and she's barely an acceptable writer (but make no mistake, I eat her books UP), flat as the desert, poor plot execution (very swiss cheese), boringgggggggg
Carolyn Arnold brings suspense and intense moments to Last Seen Alive, a gripping police procedural that is the sixth book in a series. The setting largely takes place in Prince William County in northern Virginia and features Detective Amanda Steele. Amanda, a seasoned detective, is partnered with Detective Trent Stenson. Amanda reconnects with an old boyfriend and ends up finding the dead body of his wife, Claire, on Logan’s bed. Logan pleads with Amanda to prove he’s innocent, but initial findings don’t look good for him. When the case is assigned to another detective team by their new sergeant, Amanda is livid. Can she get back the case and determine if Logan is guilty or innocent?
Amanda continues to balance work and family. Last year, she adopted a young girl from a previous case, Zoe Parker. Lining up baby sitters for her work schedule can be challenging. Additionally, she needs to be there for Zoe, who is still seeing a therapist following the death of both of her parents. Amanda’s flaws and struggles made her seem realistic. She shows growth and depth as the story progresses, and readers continue to get more insight into Trent in this story. He’s loyal, funny, and always has Amanda’s back. Despite only being partners for a few months, their dynamics enhanced the story line.
The novel builds suspense in a way that pulls readers into the lives of the characters. An outstanding prologue grabs readers’ attention and the first chapter adds to the drama. The descriptive writing style draws one in and keeps you turning the pages. The plot is intriguing, full of chasing down leads and interviewing suspects and witnesses in anticipation of identifying the killer. While I guessed the killer early in the book, there were some surprises. Other than a few flashback chapters, most of the story is from Amanda’s point of view.
I enjoyed how the author twisted the plot points and provided unpredictable moments in the story. These twists and surprises keep readers on their toes. Will you see that ending coming? Themes include murder, relationships, families, respect, loyalty, reputation, secrets, and more.
Overall, this novel was engaging, thought-provoking and engrossing. This is the sixth book that I have read by this author. I can’t wait to find out what is next for Amanda and Trent. I recommend this to those that like police procedurals with relatable and likeable main characters.
Bookouture and Carolyn Arnold provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. This is my honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way. Publication date is currently expected to be October 6, 2022.
---------------------- My 3.95 rounded to 4 stars review is coming soon.
A fantastic police-procedural! I'm coming into this series at book 6, which is not ideal. There is a lot of back stories that I've missed, but Arnold does a great job of filling in the gaps, although I would think the series works better chronologically. I loved Amanda Steele, our protaganist. She is feisty and intuitive, which us crime fans know are important qualities in the detectives! The plot hooked me from the very start. The crime scenes are interesting and keep us reading quickly, unravelling the clues to try and solve the crimes faster than the police! I really enjoyed it, and it did make me want to go back and start the series from book 1!
I am always excited to read another Carolyn Arnold novel. She manages to hook me early and keep me flipping pages. I am just along for the ride, eager to go wherever the story takes me.
Amanda came home with more than fun after a night’s out. Too bad the romantic night she had anticipated is brought up short when a dead body is found on the bed they planned to use. Guess that would bring anyone up short. 🙂
Amanda is a detective , working homicide for the Prince William Sound County Police Department. Her first call is to dispatch, the second to her partner, Trent Stenson. Poor Trent. I feel the both have feelings for each other, but because they are partners, they fight the attraction.
Even though Logan is a suspect and Amanda is too close to be working the case, I know that won’t stop her.
The crime scene is too neat, too simple, all the clues lined up for them to see. They know crime is messy, complex.
Amanda is like a bulldog. She doesn’t give up until the case is closed. She may WANT to find the killer, but Trent NEEDS to solve the mystery. He has to find the answers, solve the puzzle.
Last Seen Alive is another success story for Carolyn Arnold.
I voluntarily reviewed and ARC of Last Seen Alive by Carolyn Arnold.
Last Seen Alive (Detective Amanda Steele Book 6) by Carolyn Arnold
Carolyn Arnold can always be counted on to deliver an exciting police procedural in her Detective Amanda Steel Series. Last Seen Alive is a wonderful and suspenseful addition to the saga.
Synopsis: Detective Amanda Steele throws caution to the wind when she meets up with her former boyfriend Logan. It's only for one night, what could possibly be wrong? The two lovebirds are shocked to discover Logan's estranged wife Claire dead in Logan's bed as they enter the bedroom. Claire has been murdered. Logan wants Amanda to believe he is innocent, but the evidence says otherwise. What really happened? How did a brutally murdered body end up in Logan's bed?
Last Seen Alive is available on October 6th.
Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture, for sharing this book with me. Your kindness is appreciated!
I loved this instalment following the death of Amanda's ex lover Logan's estranged wife Claire who is found dead in his bed, it seems like an open and shut case, she's in Logan's bed, in underwear, they have been estranged for 4 years and the gun used to kill her is Logan's. Yet Amanda is convinced Logan isn't guilty and the main factor is she is there when he discovers his wives body as he's brought home for a one night stand. Question is, is Logan innocent or is he using her as an obvious excuse. Because who would bring home a detective if they murdered their ex wife and left their body on their bed.
I love Carolyn Arnold and the Amanda Steele series is one of my favourite there's always so much going on we usually have the investigation, the killer and Amanda and Trent's personal stories in tangent. Which is pretty much the layout of this instalment except we have a lot of flashback chapters in this one which helped me develop a sense of who our murdered girl was yet it didn't explain really the why she had been murdered. But either way I really enjoyed it. The legal knowledge and criminal procedure is written extremely well it reads like someone who has done thee research i frigging love it!!
Amanda is one of my favourite detectives she is a kick ass lady and I love how she is fighting for Logan, as the odds are completely against him. . This is why I love this series! I couldn't help as well but laugh at the dark humour that finally Amanda allows herself to go on a date and her date has a dead woman in his bed. The mixture of the past and presence made this more interesting and exciting because in the present we are hearing information from Logan and others which is sketchy at best so when the story is slowly reviled it blew my mind.
If you want a great series look no further pick up the Amanda Steele series and get ready for an intense emotional rollercoaster. This instalment is full of twists and turns with fantastic writing Arnold knows how to keep the reader wanting more! I will always want more! Easy 4 stars
Thank you to bookouture, Carolyn Arnold and Netgalley for a an ARC of Last Seen Alive in exchange for my fair and honest opinions.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Last Seen Alive is the sixth book in the Detective Amanda Steele series by Carolyn Arnold and it did not disappoint. Read on to learn the reason this series has become a favourite.
Last Seen Alive takes us back to the Prince William County. The story reunites readers with Detectives Amanda Steele and Trent Stenson. While on a night out with a friend, Amanda reconnected with Logan, an ex-lover. They went back to Logan’s home for a night of passion, but the discovery of a dead body in his bed cut short their rendezvous. All the evidence leads to Logan. Amanda’s connection to the suspect rendered her ineligible to work the case. However, her tenacity and her desire for justice will have her working the case in no time.
The attention grabbing prologue had me diving eagerly into meat of the story with curiosity as to the outcome. Intrigue, suspense and the complex case had me turning the pages. As the story progressed, the identity of the killer was clear, however, the uncertainty lay in the motive. The murder investigation led the duo to a cold case, and it was interesting figuring how both cases were connected. The investigation delivered several surprising and interesting reveals.
This installment provided a Little more insight into Trent’s character. This case brought to mind a painful episode in his life. Amanda also discovers that her attraction to Trent is not one-sided. Trent and Amanda are so in tune with each other as work partners, which made a great team. Any romantic involvement between will complicate their working relationship. I am curious to see how Arnold will handle this in future books.
Amanda continues to juggle her professional and personal life. Finding a balance between the two comes with its challenges, but Amanda does her best under the circumstances.
It was fascinating seeing events through the victim’s eyes. The snippets from the victim’s POV provided insight in to her state of mind up to the point of her death. While the mystery was solved, its conclusion was anti-climatic. Despite this, I am looking forward to more stories with Amanda and Trent.
Last Seen Alive delivered a captivating mystery filled with twists and turns. Its engaging plot kept me glued to the pages to the end. Overall, a great addition to the series. Fans of police procedurals, crime solving stories and murder mysteries, will want to pick up this series. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Carolyn Arnold, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 6th October 2022.
This is the fourth book I have read by this author. It is also the fifth book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Stolen Daughters' which I also highly recommend and is the second book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series 'The Silent Witness' which is the third book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series, 'Black Orchid Girls' which is the fourth book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series and 'Her Frozen Cry' which is the fifth book in the 'Detective Amanda Steele' series. Each book can be read as a standalone and I would recommend them all.
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching stunning cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'A totally compulsive crime thriller! Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Robert Dugoni and Rachel Caine.' I am a huge fan of Angela Marsons so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Carolyn and if this is half as good as 'Stolen Daughters', 'Black Orchid Girls', 'Her Frozen Cry', and 'The Silent Witness' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue and 39 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Virginia, USA 🇺🇸
This book is written in third person perspective and the protagonist is Detective Amanda Steele. The benefits of third person perspective with are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
What an ending and yet another epic read from the very talented Carolyn Arnold!!! Congratulations Carolyn on yet another page turner!!
This is an extremely well written book with vivid descriptions that will suck you straight into the storyline and captivated from beginning to end. The synopsis and cover worked perfectly with the storyline.
The storyline means that there is no problem with this being read as a standalone. I was absolutely hooked throughout, a true page turner from beginning to end. The storyline was in depth and packed with suspense, twists, turns, shocks and was an edge of your seat, nail biting and heart racing psychological thriller. I was absolutely hooked. I read this book in less than 24 hours and I'm looking forward to reading the previous books in this series as well as more to come. This series is extremely addictive and I cannot wait to see what the next "episode" brings!! It is one of the best books I have read this year and I really enjoyed and loved the ending!!! It is filled with suspense, tension, mystery, shocks, love, friendship, sadness, crime and everything you could ever want in a crime novel. I also loved loved what happened at the end.... About time you two!! However, at the same time it's heartbreaking as what they say is true and nothing can come of it at the risk of losing their friendship.. I'm gutted as they would make a perfect couple!! Who am I talking about? Well, you'll just have to read the book to find out won't you?!? I liked how Carolyn included chapters from Claire's perspective as it shows the readers what led to what happened and how she felt about what was going on. It also ensured there were no loose ends at the book and that everything was explained and tied up. It is one of my pet hates having loose ends at the end of a book so well done Carolyn!! I won't say more as not to spoil it for future readers. It is a true page turner that will leave you biting your nails on the edge of your seat with your heart racing. I loved the ending and I cannot wait to see what Amanda and Trent are going to do now!!!! Hope your busy typing the next one up Carolyn as I cannot wait!!!
Although this is the sixth book in the series you will have absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I loved meeting all the characters again who were all strong, well defined and unique. I have become completely invested in Amanda, Trent and Zoe through reading these books and they now feel like family that I miss when I come to the end of one book but am excited to see again at the beginning of the next!! .Amanda is absolutely whoop a## and I love seeing strong female leads in books. She has a background but will not let it pull her down and she is definitely someone I would love to have on my side. It has been so bitter sweet watching her bond with Zoe even more and watching their relationship develop and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. I've also enjoyed seeing Zoe's confidence growing book by book after everything she went through. They are fast becoming like family to me along with Trent and Malone who I missed in this book. I cannot stand Sergeant Graves who is a thorn in Amanda and Trent's side, has an attitude problem and in general is just a horrible cow. I hope Amanda digs something up on her and that we get Malone or at least a decent sergeant back really soon 🙏 Trent is another fantastic team member and they work perfectly well together. I would love to see more happen between these two amazing characters but only time will tell!! I love Rideout's (medical examiner) character and personality with his morgue humour and I also like Malone and see him as a sort of fatherly figure to Amanda. I'm hoping to see more of both of them in the next book as I missed them in this one. I am definitely looking forward to meeting them all (well almost all) again!!!
I could not praise this book enough and highly recommend. Carolyn I cannot wait to read more of your very successful work!!! I would also love to see this book turned into a movie. An absolutely addictive, compelling and gripping true page turner!!! If you have not read any books by this epic authour then you are seriously missing out!!!
Overall an absolutely captivating, engrossing page turner that is compelling and addictive!!!
Genres covered in this novel include Thriller, Mystery, Police Procedural, Suspense, Hardboiled, Organised Crime, Women's Detective Fiction, Psychological Thriller, Noir Fiction, Psychological Fiction and Crime Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Carol Wyer, Lisa Regan, Robert Dugoni, Rachel Caine, Angela Marsons and ANYONE looking for an epic page turner .
320 pages.
This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle and £8.99 for paperback via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.
Feel free to add me on Goodreads or follow me on my website or Facebook for more reviews
Both the prologue and the first chapter of this book have dramatic beginnings that capture your attention and make you eager to read more. Detective Amanda Steele has recently reconnected with an old boyfriend and has been casually dating him for the last few months. One night after a date, Amanda goes home with Logan. Their romantic plans come to an abrupt halt when they find the dead body of Logan’s estranged wife in his bed. Amanda is sure Logan is innocent and is able to convince her hard-nosed boss to allow her and her work partner, Trent Stenson, to investigate the case.
Last Seen Alive is the sixth book of the series and is a thrilling police procedural. I started reading this series with book 4 and I have really been enjoying it. Amanda’s dedication to the job and her daughter makes her a likable character. I love the parts of the book focusing on the investigation and how that is paired with a complex, suspenseful plot. Amanda and Trent work well together and Trent is able to give Amanda several reality checks as they gather evidence since she has a personal connection to the case. After a big build-up throughout the story, the ending seems rushed and is a bet of a letdown. In addition, I’m not sure I like the direction Amanda’s personal life seems to be going, but I’m hoping to be proven wrong in future books since I’ll definitely be reading to find out what’s in store for these characters.
I received this ebook from NetGalley through the courtesy of Bookouture. An advance copy was provided to me at no cost, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.
Amanda just can’t catch any breaks. Her new sergeant is busting her behind at every turn and her flash in the pan quickie with former lover Logan leads to a gruesome discovery. As Amanda and Trent work the case, Logan’s wife’s sordid past comes to light. But can they put all the pieces together before the bodies quit stacking up. For as many crime series that I read, I should be a captain extraordinaire on the force. I love trying to alive the case before it’s revealed, but this one had me stumped until a Late reveal clicks everything into symmetry. I liked a development for Amanda, but Will it be allowed to continue?? Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the early copy.
Wow, this book is a great addition to Carolyn Arnold’s Detective Amanda Steele series. It got off to a great start, I was immediately drawn into the story from the first page with the return of an old character and a murder that Steele wants to investigate but can’t. I love reading of the friendship and working rapport between Steele and Trent and seeing how their characters are developing. This is a book that had everything I love - great writing, a very good plot line, twist after twist and I enjoyed the little snippets from the victims perspective which added to the story. There is such a lot going on in the story to keep me entertained and I found this to be a very absorbing read which held my attention all the way through. I’m not to sure if I like the new Sargeant or not though, maybe she’ll grow on me over time. Carolyn Arnold has a wonderful way of connecting with her readers through her writing and characters and I look forward to the next book. If you like police procedurals then you’ll likely enjoy this series although I’d recommend you read the books in order to know the characters from the beginning.
I can't believe we're already on book six of this fabulous series!
Amanda bumps into old flame Logan on a night out. Sparks fly between them and soon they're on their way back to his place. They get a nasty shock when they find his estranged wife dead in his bed. Logan is immediately arrested, but Amanda believes in his innocence, but her new boss doesn't believe her. After wrangling her way onto the case, it's up to her and her partner Trent to prove Logan didn't do it.
Last Seen Alive has plenty of tension running throughout, pulling me in from the very beginning.
Amanda is really the kind of detective that you'd want on your side if you were ever to find yourself on the wrong side of a jail cell when you were innocent. Her dogged determination to prove Logan's innocence, even in the face of so much evidence against him, is inspiring.
There were more developments on the romance front for Amanda in this book and I look forward to seeing where that's headed in future novels!
I felt the pace wasn't quite as quick and snappy as previous books, but there were still plenty of twists and turns along the way.
If you're looking for a well-written police procedural, then I would highly recommend Last Seen Alive or any of the other books in this series to you!
I love love love this author and will read anything she writes. I absolutely adore this amazing series. And this book - wow! Just brilliant. Do read this series and especially this book.
Detective Amanda Steele is back enjoying a rare night out with her friend Becky. When she decides to head home with her ex Logan.
But their plans on arriving at Logan's house aren't quite what either had in mind. As there's a dead body in his bed. A body he claims is his ex-wife Claire. Although ID says she's someone else.
But either way he's about to be charged with murder.
Unless Amanda can wrestle the case away from her colleagues and with the help of her partner Trent prove Logan is innocent.
Yet, in doing so she's about to put the one person in danger she's sworn to protect, her newly adopted daughter Zoe.
And with plenty of procedural detail, great pacing and likable characters. Not to mention twists, and a killer you won't expect. This is a really enjoyable read, and for me personally the best one of the series so far.
**I was kindly provided with an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**
(4.5) A super twisty emotional police procedural. One heck of a ride. First, I absolutely despised Amanda's new boss and I was right there with her praying for the return of the old. Though there was a little give at the end so maybe I should be more open. I am also not a fan of time bouncing, I get involved in one and then it yanks me out and I have to get involved in the present. Amanda is human, her reactions, her emotions, trying to find out what is going on. Logan, who is a blast from the past so to speak, well, he just didn't do it for me. I understand the fear, everything points to him, but he didn't click for me. I absolutely love the honesty in Amanda's relationship with Zoe. There are twists upon twists in this book and the ending had me sighing in frustration and laughing out loud. Sighing because of my own persona preference in Amanda's life and laughing out loud the way she handled it. Well done! Whose ready for book 7? Many thanks for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions #lastseenalive #carolynarnold #netgalley #bookouture
A good book is when you are sad to say goodbye to the characters when you reach the end of the story. This is how I feel after reading Last Seen Alive (Detective Amanda Steele Book 6) by Carolyn Arnold. I have read several Carolyn Arnold books. She writes engaging and believable stories with likable characters.
In Last Seen Alive, I am still loving Amanda and Zoe. I wanted the story to continue to be immersed in Amanda's and Trent's lives. I like these characters and their chemistry. I wish Amanda and Trent would get together, but I understand this keeps the tension of their working relationship going and makes it more intense for readers.
The ending felt a bit rushed after all the build-up of the storyline, but overall, a great addition to the Amanda Steele series. I would rate this a 4 out of 5 stars (just for the rushed ending).
I would recommend this series and this book. I would also recommend the other books and series by Carolyn Arnold.
4.5 rounded up. Detective Amanda Steele is back to solve another case, but this one is personal. While out for an evening with friends, Amanda runs into an old boyfriend and they hit it off, once again. They head back to his house and when they enter the bedroom, they find a dead body on his bed. The murder victim is his ex-wife who he hasn't seen in several years. He is the main suspect and when the evidence points to Logan as the murderer, he is arrested and charged with the murder. Amanda is sure her did not kill her and that there are too many inconsistencies in the evidence and at the scene. She is sure he is being framed and something in his wife's past is the reason why. When the case is assigned to another detective team by their new sergeant, Amanda is angry. Can she get the case reassigned so she can determine if Logan is guilty or innocent?
I really like the Detective Amanda Steele series. Last Seen Alive is set in Prince William County in northern Virginia. Detective Amanda Steele is partnered with Detective Trent Stenson and they make a great team. Amanda is a great character. She adopted a young girl a year ago, and has to balance being a mom with her job. Luckily she has support from her sister, and Zoe loves spending time with her aunt and cousin. I love getting to know Trent a bit as well. It makes the story more realistic to see their personalities and life. Carolyn Arnold's writing is descriptive, and pulls the reader into the story. The plot moves quickly and there are twists to keep you guessing. The story is basically told by Amanda, but there are some flashbacks into Clair's life to allow us clues to why she was murdered. I enjoyed the surprises along the way, the building of suspense and clues that kept me flipping the pages. I thought I figured out the killer, but wasn't sure until the end. Themes touched on in this book include murder, relationships, families, respect, loyalty, reputation, alcoholism, domestic abuse and secrets. Once again, I enjoyed visiting Amanda's world and recommend this book to those who enjoy crime thrillers, detective stories and police procedurals.
LAST SEEN ALIVE is the sixth book in the Detective Amanda Steele series. I must say that LAST SEEN ALIVE was just as interesting as all the ones that came before it. LAST SEEN ALIVE may be the sixth book in the Detective Amanda Steele series and can be read as a stand-alone without any mishap.
But I don’t recommend it as I believe that if this is your first book in this series or especially if it is the first book by Carolyn Arnold that you have read then I don’t think it will be the last.
I like the way Carolyn Arnold writes. I like that all her stories start out with a bang and just picks up from there as the tension increases, builds up and up right up until the end throwing one secret after another at you that keeps you in suspense from beginning to end. Once you pick up a book written by Carolyn Arnold you have to expect to be there for a while as you are not going to be able to lay it down until that last page is read.
In LAST SEEN ALIVE Detective Amanda Steele is back and solving crimes. This time around Amanda hooks up with an old friend, an ex-boyfriend to be more precise. After a night out Amanda and Logan go back to his place for a nightcap. After entering Logan’s bedroom they see a dead body lying on the bed. The body belongs to Logan’s wife who he broke it off with a few years back.
All the evidence points to Logan being the killer. Amanda doesn’t believe he did it. She wants to help Logan by proving that he did not do it but is not allowed to as she is too close to the case. But Amanda being the person and detective that she is has no intention of letting Logan be framed for something he didn’t do. Amanda will do whatever it takes to prove Logan's innocents.
As with all of Carolyn Arnold’s books I highly recommend LAST SEEN ALIVE to all those murder mysteries, and crime-solving sleuths out there in bookland. Grab your copy of LAST SEEN ALIVE today and help Amanda find the real killer if that is Logan or someone else! What do you think? Who is the killer? What was their motive?
Last Seen Alive by Carolyn Arnold is the sixth book in the Brilliant Detective Amanda Steele series and one of the best series you can get you teeth into. I have loved this series and always have me glued to my chair from the start till the end. Carolyn's books never disappoint and always been brilliant It's a brilliant police procedural packed with lots of action, especially as it has great twists and turns throughout as well, and will have you up to the early hours of the morning if you start to read just before you go to bed!!!
I highly recommend this Detective Amanda Steele series. They have all been a 5 star read.
This book continues the series but it can definitely be read as a standalone. I have been thoroughly enjoying the series and this was yet another addictive page turner of a book which kept me very entertained and guessing what was going to happen.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own
Last Seen Alive is book 6 in the Detective Amanda Steele series, and I loved the fact I didn't need to have read the previous five to be able to enjoy it!
This was a very enjoyable crime thriller, and the writing was brilliant! The characters are fleshed out, and have enough about them to feel familiar - even of you've not met them before. I absolutely love Amanda's partner, Trent, and find that she's not too bad either, which is really quite refreshing as I often find female police procedural protagonists extremely frustrating. I was pleasantly surprised to find Amanda believable, for the most part. Logan isn't too bad either.
I don't usually like the whole "partner love interest" theme, because I don't find it realistic in most cases, but it didn't bother me here, as Carolyn Arnold successfully negotiates the path between 'close colleagues' and 'possibly more' with tact and realism.
The plot, I have to say, was a bit confusing because once the case (which involves Logan, Amanda's sort-of-ex boyfriend) takes off there are so many extra layers that are revealed that it was a bit awkward to follow. I also felt that some parts - including Amanda getting the case, and the reason why - were a tad implausible; but not having read the previous books in the series, which may or may not (although I'm guessing the former) reveal why she did, probably plays a large part in that.
Overall, this was a well written, well paced and plotted story, and an enjoyable read. I'm sure fans of the series will love it, and I'm more than happy to add Carolyn Arnold to my "watch" list!
I received a complimentary electronic ARC of this excellent mystery from Netgalley, author Carolyn Arnold, and publisher Bookouture. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me. I have read Last Seen Alive of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. I am always thrilled to have another novel culled from the incredible mind of Carolyn Arnold. She always gives us a special visit to the worlds she conjures up - and it is always an exciting trip.
Detective Amanda Steele is at her best, working alongside her partner Trent, as they run down the facts and complexities surrounding the death of Logan's wife and the similarities found in the series of art heists that have taken place in the area over the last 20 years. The trail of clues that follow the death of Logan's wife is drawing them deeper into a widespread criminal net that has remained hidden locally for many years. Will they find the answers before more bodies fall?
And it is interesting to have Logan back - he is a character I am pleased to revisit. The sixth novel in the Amanda Steele series, Last Seen Alive is a complete, stand-alone novel, but it is a compelling series when taken as a whole, and gains depth when taken together.

I love a good book from Carolyn Arnold and this more than lived up to my expectations. This is the sixth book in the Detective Amanda Steel series so, as I usually say, I recommend reading the series for better context, backstory, and character development. While that much is true, there is enough explanation of previous events for this to be a highly entertaining, well written, pacey, standalone novel.
As usual, the story centres on Amanda Steele. Imagine giving your ex a second chance only to find a dead woman on his bed. Amanda is unswerving in her investigation to find the truth and potentially exonerate her ex, or to convict him of murdera. Partner Trent will follow her to the gates of hell and back, and is more than a little in love with her.
I do not want to put out any spoilers so I shall just say that I think this is the best in the series and I’m happy to recommend it to any police procedural/thriller readers, with my usual caveat that your experience will be enhanced by reading how Amanda got to be who she is in this book. I can’t wait to read and review book seven soon. I gave Last Seen Alive, by Carolyn Arnold, five stars
Full disclosure - I was provided an advanced reader’s copy of this book by the author or their representative but have voluntarily provided a review. All opinions are my own.
Last Seen Alive is scheduled for an October 6, 2022 release date
Too close to home
Detective Amanda Steele is back in yet another gripping case by best selling author Carolyn Arnold. At the urging of her best friend Becky, Amanda finds herself on an unwilling night on the town. When she reconnects with one-time fling Logan Hunter at the Tipsy Moose, Amanda knows this is not a good idea. Still, she accompanies him back to his house for a little alone time. As the sparks and clothing begin to fly, Amanda makes the discovery of a scantily clad, very dead woman in Logan’s bed. After the initial shock wears off, Amanda learns that the deceased is Hunter’s estranged wife Claire. But if the pair have been separated for almost five years, why is she in his house? The optics are not good from any angle and with the evidence piling up, the focus is primarily on Claire’s past and her final steps leading to her demise and discovery. As detectives Steele and Stenson start to investigate, the trail winds into the territory of a string of high-end art heists and a cold case that tracks too closely back to their vic. Amanda is getting close to cracking the case but when her beloved adopted daughter is targeted the detective knows that she needs to watch her step. One wrong move or missed lead could be detrimental not only to the case, but to Steele on the most personal of levels.
Last Seen Alive is the sixth in the Detective Amanda Steele series of novels by Carolyn Arnold. Coming off the heels of “Her Frozen Cry” where the lines between Detective Steele’s past and present began to intersect, this case sees the lines between personal and professional threaten to blur to nonexistence. Starting with the discovery of a murder victim in the home a past fling and current love interest Amanda immediately draws the suspicion of her superior who rightly questions if Amanda can stay objective when she has such a close relationship to the prime suspect. Never one to back down from a challenge, however, Detective Steele and her partner doggedly pursue all leads under the stifling supervision of Sergeant Graves. But tracking a woman who was practically a ghost for the past four years proves challenging and ends up in lots of long nights and hastily arranged sitting arrangements for her young adoptive daughter Zoe. Add in the fact that Amanda is starting to have stronger feelings for Trent than just a work partner and there really is a lot going on in this book. Even so, Arnold manages to deliver yet again with a fast paced, intriguing thriller that will have you guessing until the very end. If you are already a fan of Carolyn Arnold and her work, Last Seen Alive will not disappoint.
Last Seen Alive by Carolyn Arnold is the 6th book in her Detective Amanda Steele series. I have noted this many times, that I am a big fan of Arnold, having read most of her series, and I love this series, which continues with another great addition. Last Seen Alive was fantastic, with me unable to put the book down. Amanda Steele, our heroine, is a homicide detective in Dumfries, Virginia Police Department
The story starts off with Amanda, having been out with friends, ends up at her ex-boyfriend’s (Logan) house, when they find the body of a woman fatally shot: the woman happens to be Logan’s ex wife, whom he has not seen in 4 years. Amanda pushes Logan out of the room, calls for help, which will also bring her partner Trent. Amanda’s nasty sergeant, pulls her off the case, since the police suspect Logan killed his wife. Amanda knows Logan is innocent, and together with Trent, they go all out to find the murderer, with her sargeant allowing her to get back on case. Amanda was determined to uncover Claire’s last steps, and learns that her previous boss also was killed the day before. What is the connection, and who else could be in danger.
Amanda and Trent worked very well together, with Trent getting Amanda to go home at night to be with her daughter, Zoe. I really liked how Trent became a better partner to Amanda, and enjoyed how well they worked together. Amanda is a fabulous heroine, who goes beyond, as well as being emotional, with somewhat of a temper; but she is a master as solving crimes. They discover that Claire (Logans ex) was involved in stealing various paintings and artifacts over the years, and they go all out to find out who was working with Claire.
What follows is an exciting, suspenseful, intriguing, tense mystery that kept me unable to put the book down, as this was a mind-blowing thriller. There were so many suspects, and even surprises at the end. To say too much more would be spoilers, and this was a great good story that needs to be read from start to finish, especially with so much going on that keeps us glued to the book. It is important to read this story from start to finish.
Last Seen Alive was a very good excellent crime thriller that was suspenseful, intense, and kept us guessing who was the murderer to the end. Amanda and Trent were so very good together. Last Seen Alive was so very well written by Carolyn Arnold, and I cannot wait to see what she has in store for us next. If you like mystery thrillers, police procedural, then you need to be reading this book.
This is another winner for Carolyn Arnold as it packs quite the punch as the past comes back to haunt the present in the characters in this story. Amanda Steele has finally decided to open herself up to the possibility of a little romance in her life with a night out with Logan. Logan is a blast from the past and an ex-romantic interest. When they arrive at Logan's house, the romance quickly fizzles out when they discover the brutalized body of a young woman in Logan's bed. The dead body turns out to be Logan's wife, Claire. He claims he has not seen Claire in years, but all of the circumstantial evidence points directly to him. After all the husband is always guilty, right? The mystery deepens when her driver's license shows another name. Amanda does not believe that Logan is guilty and believes the scene is a little too "neat", even though Amanda's hateful boss wants to solve this case quickly and neatly without truly investigating anything. If you have read any of the Amanda Steele books, you know that she is like a dog with a bone when she is investigating and believes in something. She is one of my fictional heroes. She is tenacious and leaves no stone unturned. I also enjoy watching Amanda work hard to balance her personal life and professional life as she continues to grow closer to and love Zoe more each day. Her partner, Trent, is my hero as well. I cannot really explain it. I just like him. I want to see Trent and Amanda together, but I do not know if this will happen because of their work relationship. I am definitely ready to see Sgt. Katherine Graves go back where she came from. I would like to reach into the book and slap her! You know you are really living in the book when you want to slap a character!
This mystery is very complex as the clues go back many years as they dig into Claire's past trying to find out what she has been doing and where she has been. This made the mystery very enjoyable to read and try to dissect. Carolyn Arnold is a master of writing good and interesting police procedurals that will suck you into the story. She also knows how to insert a twist here and there that you will never see coming!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Detective Amanda Steele is at it again in this new installment of the "Detective Amanda Steele" series by Caroline Arnold. I remember being impressed with Caroline Arnold's writing when I had read "Her Frozen Cry", the previous book in the series and this book has again reinforced my liking of this author. "Last Seen Alive" opens with detective Amanda hooking up with Logan for a one-night stand after a chance encounter, having been out-of-touch with him for quite some time since their break-up several months ago. However, their nightcap is put to a halt when Amanda finds the body of a woman in Logan's bed and the matter only gets more intriguing when Logan says that it is his "ex"-wife Claire.
Though the case gets assigned to other cops in her unit and they proceed full-on with charging Logan for the murder, Amanda is unable to shake off the feeling that Logan is being set-up. After failing to get her points across to her nemesis, the new Sergeant Graves, Amanda goes over her head to the Chief Buchanan and gets the case assigned to her and her partner Trent. However, the case only gets more and more intriguing as they proceed to find out more about Claire and it seems there is a definite possibility that Claire's shady past caught up with her. What are the shady things Claire was involved in? Is that the reason she has been killed? Or is Logan involved in the murder of his wife?
Author Caroline Arnold has put together another story of intriguing characters and complicated events that grabs the reader's attention and pulls them into it's world. The pace of the story never lets up from the beginning; it only heats up more and more with a wonderful car chase towards the end. There are also some interesting moments between Amanda and Trent that only makes us more invested in knowing Amanda as a person too. The fact that she is shown as this person with her own faults and virtues, and someone who is always trying to do the right thing despite of her traumatic past, makes her more real to the readers.
This is yet another wonderful, interesting and very well-written police procedural from Caroline Arnold and the fact that she is the queen of police procedurals is undisputable.
Amanda Steele, the Iron Lady… but only when she chases the baddies. Underneath she is as soft as butter especially where Zoe is concerned.
She does not open up her heart very easily now. Life has not always been kind to her on a personal level, but little by little she starts to see the other side of sadness again and of course Zoe has been a great help. This does not mean she did not have her family’s support, but sometimes, when you are hurt very deeply, you build a high wall around yourself and create a distance in stead of accepting what they are offering.
It’s nice to meet up with Logan again. Fans of the series will remember him from before. Life has not always been kind to him either and this time it seems like someone is trying to frame him for murder.
Time for Amanda and her partner Trent to take action and hunt the culprit down. In the beginning they could not make head or tail, but little by little the pieces of the puzzle start to fall into place.
Once again I realise how devious people can be. On the outside they are summit of respectability. If you dig deeper though, you often find a much uglier personality.
When two people are in love, should they not talk about it to each other and do something about it in stead of pining after them? In an ideal world, the answer would be most certainly yes. In our, often cruel, world, we are afraid to do this. We fear rejection or maybe becoming the laughing stock. Or maybe we are afraid to lose one of our best friends?
I honestly don’t think I could settle with being friends. In a way I feel like it would always be awkward. After all, a lot of good couples say their other half is their best friend and that’s the reason why they stay together. So…. 😉
Another great book in this series with great recurrent characters. 5 stars.
Carolyn Arnold brings us another gripping read for the Amanda Steele series with LAST SEEN ALIVE. If you're a regular reader of Carolyn Arnold, you know that things, people, and events all have a way of circling back around. I highly recommend having read the first five books of the series to get a full grasp of where Amanda has come from over the course of the series to now -- and how Logan fits into the mix!
Amanda has been carrying a lot of responsibility and stress on her shoulders. It aligns with real life that just when a bit of the load lessens, three more things pile on top. I liked the return of Logan and the disruption that turned his relationship with Amanda upside down. It gave us a deeper look at Logan and helped give some closure for him.
I have been rooting for Amanda's life to take a turn for the better and overall, I feel like Zoe is the biggest catalyst for shifting her life in a positive direction. Among all of the darkness associated with the crimes Amanda investigates, Zoe gives us a fresh breath of air.
I'm a big supporter for moving forward on a relationship between Trent and Amanda. Even though they're co-workers, I think they are a great balance to the other. Sgt. Graves is rubbing me the wrong way, but ultimately, I am hoping that Sgt. Graves has a story of her own to tell alongside Amanda's that will enhance their working relationship.
Overall, another fantastic addition to the Amanda Steele series! Carolyn Arnold helps bring police procedural to life with realistic situations and cases that grip your mind until the very last page!
