Reads like a textbook a bit, and it’s embarrassing how long it took me to read this, but here we are.

This is an area of history I knew almost nothing about and this book was really good in covering what happened. The book goes through the various cultures Ireland lived under from the first people being there on through the Great Famine, the Easter Rebellion, the division of the country and on.

It goes into where the street gangs started and how this related to organized crime, Irish politics and the fight for independence. It covers Irish immigration to America, difficulties the Irish had here and various early Irish gangs such as the Dead Rabbits and others.

It goes into what cities the gangs developed in, the IRA, a pirate queen, American outlaws with an Irish background, gang warfare, politicians who were gang members, how things changed to drugs and what effect Brexit had in relation to all of this.

Very interesting and informative.

This was well written and easy to understand. The information was both interesting and entertaining. I do enjoy learning new things. The narrator did a good job bringing the information to life without making it boring.

I received an ARC and a copy of the audiobook and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

A waste of money

Poorly written, filled with misinformation of basic facts. Even when quoting from reliable sources the wrong facts and figures are presented. Was taken in by the wonderful title, be warned...

Should have been called “a history of Irish American organised crime” utterly sh*te book. Bet it’s lapped up by an American audience though.
