the 3.5-star rating i'm giving this novel is solely based on the fact that the main couple had me giggling and kicking my feet despite me "boo, coward!"-ing the devastating cultivation cauldron fake-out in the synopsis.

a quick explanation if you don't know what a cultivation cauldron is: the traditional daoist philosophy of masculine yang energy and feminine yin energy being inherently complementary naturally results in the belief that a sexual union between man and woman could allow them to exchange and strengthen their own vital energies. this belief is where the trope of 双修 / dual cultivation stems from—sex is not merely about pleasure, but also about cultivating and increasing one's vital energy.

however, this type of sexual cultivation is not always mutually beneficial. on the contrary, it was common for men to 采阴补阳 / pluck the yin to nourish the yang; in doing so, they often treated their (female) partners as objects to be exploited and plundered. if you've read john minford's art of war translation, you might have seen this quote in his introduction:

The man should defeat the enemy in the sexual battle by keeping himself under complete control so as not to emit semen while exciting the woman til she reaches an orgasm and sheds her yin essence which is then absorbed by the man.

the process described here is exactly what 采阴补阳 / plucking the yin to nourish the yang is meant to be. folktales often record the belief that one could be drained of one's essence and even life force in this manner (hence the wide variety of feminine sexual monsters like the ghoul in pu songling's short story 画皮 / the painted skin). it is by its very nature a predatory act, and the women/submissive partners in these circumstances are always dehumanised as 炉鼎 / (human) cauldrons in cultivation novels.

that's why i was very excited to read this novel, because the synopsis suggested a reversal of the cauldron trope. where cauldrons are usually, if not always, the submissive partners in cultivation novels, the synopsis described gu hanjiang as having 炉鼎之体 / the body of a cauldron while also putting him in the position of the 攻 gong / top—a position that's rare not only for cauldrons, but also for shizuns (lmao). i was so curious to find out how exactly this author planned on subverting the cauldron trope (especially in only 89k words!), so imagine my disappointment when his apparent cauldron's body ends up being attributed to an illusion created by an enemy. yikes.

the only reason i wasn't more disappointed is because the fact that it was an illusion was hinted at pretty early on in the novel, so i had over half the novel to prepare myself for the fact that it was just a cop-out. but still!!! now i want to read a xianxia novel with an actual reversal of the cauldron trope 😭

anyway, onto the actual romance. they were so cute?? i'm not even remotely joking when i say i was screaming into my pillow over how tooth-achingly sweet they were the entire time. i have a very soft spot for this particular kind of dynamic, where one partner is deliberately causing all sorts of trouble while the other one just indulges their every whim (or 他在闹他在笑, for my fellow chinese-speakers). and, of course, the whole 暗恋 / silent pining thing. not like i have a list for that or anything 🤭 all in all, it definitely fulfils its author's intent of having it be a super short and fluffy story!! i just hate that i feel cheated :(

This story was short and sweet. I really love Shizun x disciple stories so I was intrigued from the beginning. The banter between the characters was good. I loved the cold, repressed, jealous, ancient Shizun that only shows kindness to his disciple. It was slow burn even despite the short length (22+1 chapters). From the description I had expected there to be more smut.

I was a little disappointed when they finally got together. After chasing his Shizun (Gu Hanjiang) for 18 or so chapters Qi Shu refused his Shizun’s advances and then when duel cultivation does (finally) happen it isn’t explicit. Also, it does not seem as pleasurable as I had hoped for after so many years of pining. I guess I just wanted more passion. It even seems Qi Shu regrets his choice to begin duel cultivating with his Shizun; I wish it had been more clear he enjoyed the process. It was funny how it was autumn when they started and winter when they stopped haha. His Shizun is relentless with all methods of cultivation.

I give it 3.5 skulls. It was cute, short, and sweet with a good translation but the ending did disappoint me a bit.
