Aeon #2

Aeon Burn

Rate this book
A week ago, the supernova Aeon detonated in the skies over Antarctica. Mass migrations of humanity and animal life began northward. Secondary bursts of ionizing radiation knocked out worldwide power grids. Global temperatures spiked. Oceans rose as seawater expanded and glaciers melted. Massive storms and acid rain scour the planet.

The southern continent is literally melting under the feet of Dr. Xin Rhou as she is trapped at the South Pole, and she is perhaps the only person in the world with a full accounting of the data recorded when Aeon exploded.

Thousands of miles away in the Amazon, Max Carver struggles to stay alive while attempting to stop his old friend and brother Ben Belloc escaping from the Colony. But the only thing Max really wants is to get north of the equator and find his pregnant wife Talisha as she is about to give birth.

Talisha, meanwhile, has joined millions of Aeon refugees on the roads of America. Most cars have been rendered inoperable by the supernova burst, and all communications and power grids are down. But for Tal, on the verge of giving birth in a suddenly very unforgiving world, all of this is even less important than the revelation she has just learned...

Aeon Burn remained unfinished at the time of Matthew Mather's untimely death in 2022. A masterpiece left as his final gift to readers, it was completed with the help of established technothriller author Dale M. Nelson.

#2 in the Aeon series takes place about a week after a supernova visited destruction on earth: melting ice caps, dangerous temperatures, and climate refugees fleeing for still-habitable land. Governments are floundering. A.I. can help, but in this case, A.I. doesn’t mean what you think it means... I look forward to seeing where this goes with the third book coming out soon.

Solid Middle-Of-Trilogy Tale. This book is one of those that has basically one goal - tell a solid tale that picks up well from the opening book and sets up the final book to be MUST. READ. It does that job pretty solidly. It continues our various storylines from the first book, though it perhaps could have used a "Last Time, On..." bit at the beginning for some of the storylines that don't get *as* much attention. But the two main storylines - in the Amazon and on a race through the US - are well done, the chapters nearly all end on the classic mini-cliffhangers that make you want to read the next chapter immediately (while skipping to one of the other storylines for the next chapter and thus making you wait to come back to the cliffhanger you just left). The reveals get more and more impactful, all while the overall situation continues to deteriorate in light of the events of the opening book. And yet... *so much more* is coming. Indeed, the only real weakness of the tale here is that while so much more is indeed coming and this book truly sets up the final book where those things, along with the major confrontation between our heroes and primary antagonist, will be resolved... because of the *timing* of those So Much More events, the ending here takes a much more expanded time scope than the rest of the tale before that point, which leaves one with a minor sense of pacing issues. Still, this is a problem even the great T2 trilogy by S.M. Stirling faced - and wound up working quite well. So we'll see how this works out when AEON FURY releases next year.

A note here: This is the book that Mather had apparently mostly completed when he was tragically killed in a car accident in September 2022, and thus this is his last work. While it is always a high honor to be able to work such a book as an Advance Reviewer Copy, my thoughts on the tale itself above are *just* about the tale and how it was completed out by Dale Nelson, whom Mather's family brought in to do just that. This book really does do quite an honor to Mather's legacy, but my own hope is that Nelson's name can be on the cover of AEON FURY along with Mather's, recognizing his work both here and in that book. I do not know if FURY will be entirely Nelson (or some other author, potentially)'s work or if Mather had at least left some level of notes or perhaps even rough drafts of some of that tale, but to my own thinking the cover author there should perhaps read something like "[smaller letters]In Memory Of[/smaller letters][big letters]Matthew Mather[/big letters][smaller letters]Written By[/smaller letters][medium letters]Dale Nelson (or whoever it turns out to be)[/medium letters]". But this is just my own thoughts there based on my own sensibilities, and won't really actually affect that book in any way.

Final thoughts:
Overall, this book truly was a solid Book 2 of a trilogy, one that did a great job of extending the story from Book 1 and setting up an exciting conclusion in Book 3. The more complex emotions relating to this being its author's final work only add a touch of extra "spice" to the feelings of a genuinely good book. Very much recommended.

Earth is shocked by an exploding nebula as alien chimeras bring chaos and yet hope for the future - 4.5 stars

In part two of a three-part series, Max Carver tries to rescue survivors in the Amazon including his childhood friend Ben Belloc. Ben has tapped into an electronically transmitted virus and several scientific breakthroughs. Ben seems to have a delusion that only he can lead mankind to a new future.

Ben has created a physical drug that will infect people. Called a Nexome, it has been able to fix cell structure and, in some circumstances, allow Ben to control people as if they were robots under his command. Ben also has a shield that may be able to deflect radiation and physical objects which many countries are interested in weaponizing. Ben has developed new lifeforms including constructors that can fabricate buildings and "golems" that can rise out of the ground and attack people.

A few weeks after the nebula exploded, the radiation showered Earth so much that Anartica has temperatures well above freezing and has raised the temperature of the Southern Hemisphere to unprecedented temperatures. Earth is burning up. A massive hurricane is bearing down on the Brazil-based research facility that Ben constructed. Getting Ben out of the Amazon and into the United States as well as securing the research is Max's priority.

One variation of the human-controlling drug is referred to as a "chimera" which brings out an anti-science, anti-government attitude by some of the people who consume Ben's Nexome. With communications destroyed by the electromagnetic pulse created by the nebula explosion, confusion is worldwide and political structures are fluid. Armed militants try to establish fiefdoms in the absence of strong central governments.

A researcher who was studying neutrinos at the South Pole is the focus of one substory. Her survival experiences deftly explain many of the physical changes in the world.

From Nature, Such Danger

No book review of Aeon Burn can be done without first acknowledging the great loss that the sudden death of Matthew Mather was to the field of Science Fiction and it's fans. Most poignant was the fact that he had just finished one of the best books of his career and part of the sequel.

Mather's gift as a writer was in his ability to imagine mind-blowing technology and to detail the characters who had to deal with it's effect on them. The first book left us all drooling for the sequel.

I am so happy to say that Matthew's estate viewed finishing Aeon Burn as a Memorial to him. The search for the author who ultimately finished the book, Dale M. Nelson, was, in my opinion, a fruitful one. I still heard Matthew's voice throughout the entire book.

Aeon Burn picks up after the Supernova has blasted Earth and follows the secretive Colony built by Ben Belloc in Brazil. Most of the Earth's Ozone layer is gone, leaving parts of the world unlivable with temperatures in the 140° range with killing levels of UV radiation.

While what's left of the world's population is frantically moving northward in search of cooler climes, food and shelter; Ben Belloc's best friend from childhood, Max, is sent with a special forces team to Brazil to solve the mystery of The Colony.

Max has to leave his pregnant wife, Talisha, behind, as she is a valuable part of the NASA crew trying to decipher the data about the Supernova.

What Max finds is literally out of this world. Rather than be a spoiler, let's just say that Matthew Mather and Dale M. Nelson have created an entirely new version of Artificial Intelligence with its own set of challenges. Fabulous book and a credit to the man who thought it up. We will always remember you, Matthew Mather.

Aeon Burn is the second book in this series. Having not read the first one, I didn't get a lot of the relations that were explained in the first book. However, this didn't prevent me from liking the story, though probably not as much as I could have had I read the first one.
The story is a good one, and I expect many scifi fans will like this one, but I doubt I'll read more in this series, There were many technical inaccuracies, though I suppose alien life forms posing as viruses could certainly account for some of those, this story just didn't strike me as being all that interesting. No doubt, my coming in in the second book accounts for some of that, but I found parts of this story to just be too unbelievable. A story that sells itself as scifi really needs to have that spark of believability to draw me in, and there was just too much out of context happenings in this one. No folks, I don't believe I'll read more in this series, despite the decent showing on this particular entry.
Don't let my review prevent you from enjoying the story though, a lot of folks wouldn't really care about the plant monsters, or the shear ineptness of the main character, so by all means, if you like scifi, feel free to add this one to your to read shelf, it's probably a much better experience if you start at the beginning.

It's been a week, the world is in panic. A supernova has practically melted South America and anywhere south of the equator, but Max Carver has a dual purpose: find Ben Belloc and stop him from leaving the technologically brilliant Colony that started it all. Cross the equator to North America to find his pregnant wife Tal and hope he's there for the birth of their baby.
Dr Xin Rhou works for the IceCube Neutrino Experiment. A brilliant scientist, finds the shock of her life when her computers and the data they housed has gone completely crazy. If the data is correct, her worst ever fear is going to manifest -- the world was going to end, and she was trapped in the South Pole with the reason it's happening and can't find a way to tell the world.
Stay tuned.....

Personal note from this reviewer: Over the years, I've come to know Matthew not just as an author, but a friend. He answered emails, held contests and giveaways, took the time to get to know his readers and let us graciously into his life. Matt was tragically taken away from us, and his wife Julie and his 2 beautiful young children. I can pretend it didn't bother me, but I'm not ashamed to say I cried. Matt, wherever you are, please know you are sorely missed by this reader. RIP, friend.

The nova in the space above the south pole brought unsurvivable radiation to heat the atmosphere

and heat the southern hemisphere to unliveable temperatures. Antarctica is melting, sea level is rising, refugees from South America were streaming north across the US border seeking safety and shelter. Ben Belloc had the technology to save the world, but at the cost of turning everyone to mindless drones. Of course this can't be allowed to happen, but those who could stop him had their own crises to combat. Ben could help but the cost would be a surrender to the alien minds controlling him.

Amazing characters caught in unbelievable circumstances no-one would believe or understand. A storyline topping the world of post-apocalyptic fiction dreamed up by a master storyteller and finished posthumously by a writer capable of continuing Mathew Mother's vision. I applaud the effort! It has brought the story to an inconceivable place where we can only pray that it continues. This is a tremendous read! I want more!

Bittersweet

The Aeon Burn series continues but only after the untimely and tragic death of author Matthew Mather. Matthew’s family enlisted Dale M Nelson to complete the story from what had already been written and notes Matthew had left.

The result is a return to the Amazon and Max Carver’s small team of mercenaries, his pregnant wife Tal, fleeing devastated San Francisco whilst being pursued by a biker gang (bearing a not totally subtle resemblance to The Proud Boys). The characterisation is as excellent as regular readers of Matthew Mather expect, and the story draws neatly to a credible, if slightly rushed, conclusion. Sadly the numerous cliffhangers will presumably remain forever unresolved.

Matthew Mather was an outstanding writer in his genre and I would urge anyone who has only read this book, and/or its predecessor, to honour his memory by reading his whole canon of work - I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

This second book in the series was published after Matthew Mather’s untimely and tragic death. That’s somewhat obvious in the switch towards the end from showing this postapocalyptic story to telling what happened over several months to the characters and the world. I hope the third book in the series develops more slowly, showing the emotions of each of the characters we’ve come to love or hate. In this story, we follow Max’s efforts in the Amazon to learn what his childhood friend Ben Belloc is doing at the Colony, his pregnant wife Tali’s search for a safe place to have their baby, and physicist Xin Rhou’s trek across the melting Antarctic from one destroyed research station to another. They’re all dealing with the rising temperatures due to supernova Aeon’s detonation in the atmosphere. Most of the book was exciting and I will read the third book.

Aeon Burn - a 'mind' field during an apocalypse

I admit I have had this book since it first came out. I have reluctantly read it because I knew it was Matthew Mather last book. Although I didn't know him personally, I was very saddened at his tragic death in September 2022. He always made himself available to his fans. He shared his wonderful family with us, and many of us mourned his passing with them.
I became a fan of Matthew Mather writings when I read Cyberstorm. After that series, I read my way through most, if not all, of his published works, which brings me to Aeon Burn. I am glad that the talented writer Dale M. Nelson was about to fill in the blanks and bring this book to press. You will not be disappointed in this book. It is everything you would expect from Matthew. He will be missed by many. -Mr.Bill

the Heat is on

The end of the world is upon us and the one man that can save the Earth from its demise is also the most wanted man by the United States government which is barely there like the Ozone layer and a hopeful future for Max Carver, his wife Talisha and their unborn child. Can Max get to his childhood friend Ben Belloc and convince him to change his way and help the world? Nail bitting page turner and I think Matt would be very pleased with how Dale was able to continue his series.

And the beat goes on

I spent a few weeks going through this stage of The Plan and was not surprised by most of the curve balls. That said it still kept me logging in everyday to see what everyone was running into. Shame the Chinese couple were hit so hard. Enough said. I want the next chapter in my library now please.

Well crafted continuation of the series originally started by Matthew Mather. A difficult task for anyone to take on and make the storyline work.

I am rereading all of Matthew Mathers books because I always discover new thoughts in them. I hope that Dale Nelson completes a third book to finish the series.

Great read

Mather was one of those writers to me that whatever I read of his I'm immediately transported into the story and everything else disappears, this one is no different. Love the story the characters its a great read. Stories like these is what helped grown glove for sci-fi.

Such a shame, I was so saddened to hear the news about the author. This second novel had to be completed by another author and it shows. The style, action, mystery and character dialog just doesn’t hit the mark for me. I loved book 1 but this was a struggle to complete. I doubt I will read the next book in the series

A story not to be missed. Ionized radiation is disturbing everything worldwide. Where will the survivors find shelter. Will this be the end of civilization as we know it. A gripping tale that will keep you awake until you find out the truth.

This book had some interesting concepts, particularly in how to respond to a catastrophe like a supernova. I think I would not want to be around when one of them goes off. There is a lot of fascinating science speculation here that makes it worth reading.

The world fight for its existence

A world wide disaster and someone claiming to be it's savior, what could go wrong. Just about everything. Intense action as the good guys try to reason with the mad scientist who claims he will deliver the world from this disaster.

Excellent story

Another implausible dystopian story? I don't think so. Mather and so Nelson have really created and produced an exciting story line with plausible characters. there is Avery rich feel to these books and one that the readers will thoroughly enjoy. Thank you

As one of my very favorite authors, I miss Matthew. I am so thankful his family chose to find a way to finish this series. In true Mather style, the story is full of excitement, twists and turns, and a bunch of gee-whiz! A wonderful testament to Matthew.

Fantastic part 2

I can't wait for part 3. Story grabs you and hard to put down. Very detailed about new tech possibilities. Imaginative. Dale does a great job finishing this book. Seem less transition from book 1.

An interesting book but not my type of book...

Slower paced and much more "tech" than the first book....It just never engaged my attention like the first book and the characters left me disinterested.

Mind boggling scenario developing quickly throughoutthis book 2 in this series. AS usual with this type of book, the ending leves you wondering how it will all end - this is where, as a reader, you can insert your own scenario, ending it with a "bang", or not.

Kind of slow, honestly not much story progress just lots of repetitive wheel spinning, and I'm bored by the big reveal. Wasn't super invested in the characters either. Won't finish the series.

Unfortunately, following the passing of the author, it was going to be difficult to replicate his ideas in someone else's voice. This is an ok book, but just doesn't feel the same.

Great Follow-up

Well-delivered follow up to the original series. I believe the original writer would be proud. I can’t wait for the next one. Twists and turns everywhere.
