The Men Duet #1

Men of Mayhem

Rate this book
Men of Mayhem and Vengeance have been combined into one book, Men of Mayhem & Vengeance, and can be found HERE.

My life could only begin once I lay beneath death.

I was sick of my mundane life and tired of being told I would never be enough, so when two men walked into the diner and demanded I come with them, I went.
Criminals. Outlaws. Mobsters. Whatever you wanted to call them, I was their collateral. I expected them to be unkind to me and that I'd end up meeting the Reaper face to face.

What I didn't expect was to find myself at the center of their world, welcomed into a life I never thought possible. Silvia as I knew her was gone. Instead, I became known as Doll, Love, Sil, or Sweets.

Once they showed me the underbelly of their lifestyle, I had to make a decision. Did I have what it took to be their moll, or would I cave under pressure and return to my lonely, boring life?

Men of Mayhem is book one in the "Men" Duet. My novellas are a part of Lauren Biel 'after dark' and are spicier/steamier fast paced stories.

This dark “why choose” romance is for adult readers due to strong sexual content and violence.

TW in one of both novellas: sharing, exhibitionism, voyeurism, blood play, non-con (multiple men), violence, gore, revenge castration, primal play, strong sexual content including anal and mfm. There's also sensitive content related to infertility.

Lauren Biel

Lauren’s stories are often emotionally raw, with lots of twists and turns. She describes her writing as “where light meets dark”, which represents how her witty humor compliments the darkness in every story. Instead of trying to mold her writing to fit in a box, she chooses to be unapologetically herself. While her focus is on Romance with dark elements, subgenre is no constraint for her. The common theme in every book is finding love when you least expect it. She enjoys putting her characters through tribulations, allowing their triumphs to be that much more poignant. Make sure you have your seatbelts secured. It’s always a bumpy ride.

When she’s not working, she’s writing. When she’s not writing, she’s spending time with her husband, her friends, or her pets. You might also find her on a horseback trail ride or sitting beside a waterfall in Upstate New York. She has a pretty normal life, yet her stories are anything but.

That was such a great novella!! I'm so happy I was able to get the ARC, even though I told myself I didn't need any more ARCs. The genre of a historical mafia romance sounded really interesting. And it's not a hard read like some older historical romances are. It's more historical vibes if you know what I mean... Men of Mayhem takes place during the 1930s & the Prohibition Era (of alcohol in the United States). I had a feeling this book was going to be good too because I loved the first page. It started off so strongly.

This is a reverse harem dark romance. Reverse harems aren't my favorite, but I really enjoyed this one. To be honest, I would have preferred it if the group, aka her men, only consisted of Reaper & Vernon (omg, I love him & his character growth even though he's lowkey insane) because sometimes I would read the "Reaper" even though it said "Morris" or "Ricky" and that would confuse me.

There were only two mistakes I caught, but that could be because it was an ARC copy. Here was one: "Chet’s laugh turned my stomached."

This book had a lot of rough sex, especially between Silvia (I stomached ^ it because it's a different spelling than my roommate's name) and Vernon and Reaper. (Only mf) Ricky & Morris were into sweeter, more vanilla sex but gave Silvia orgasms, which the first two didn't.

I can't wait to read Book 2! I want to see what's going to happen next.

This is the fastest I've read a book in a month or two LOL, and the most I've enjoyed reading in a while. I highly recommend this one. Just beware the trigger warnings (infertility discussions, low self-esteem (barely), graphic violence, murder, rough sex, etc.) & note that the men are morally grey heroes.

I forgot to write this earlier: I liked how Silvia, our heroine, was smart, feisty, strong, and brave. Not TSTL like too many heroines. For instance, she didn't try to escape her capture by the mafia men because they had guns in their hands. Only one thing she did wasn't the brightest, but I understood where she was coming from.

I received this ARC from booksirens

The dedication at the front describes me every single time I pick up one of Lauren's books! I don't read the blurb I just start reading and each time I live the journey!!

This book is part 1 and its a quick read.

Silvia is barren and her mother likes to remind her of it at every opportunity she gets, she lives a lonely boring life with a job she hates doing until these handsome mobster men come and take her away.

I love everything about this love story and them steamy scenes are *chefs kiss* 👌 Lauren Biel really knows how to write a good bad guy who you instantly love! And it's RH aswell!! I can't wait for part 2!

Men of Mayhem is a quick down and dirty RH with what I have come to know as the "Lauren flare".
Lauren Flair= Check triggers and be prepared for a wild ride.

If you are a fan of the 1930s, have a thing for mobsters, like a little darkness, and want that insta spice then seriously add this book to the TBR.

When the mobsters are owed and payment isn't received the next thing to do is to take the adult daughter of their customer.

"I knew they hadn't paid in a little while, but I didn't expect them to come for me."

Silvia is a barren woman with no luck of finding a man and living a less than thrilling life working at a diner. Until 2 big men show up and take her as ransom.

Reaper, Vernon, Ricky and Morris are the 4 mobsters out for a payment and ended up with a feisty woman as a "house guest". Each one opposite from the other but make up the perfect combo.

Only what is Silvia to do when the mobsters decide to let her go?
Does she go back to her life of possible spinsterhood or does she stay and embrace the 4 men and their hair-raising life style?

ARC View - Thank you Lauren Biel for the opportunity to binge read your books and give a honest review.

description

A reverse harem with four dangerous men? Yes, please!
This was a quick and spicy read. I only wish there was more to the storyline. Some kind of twist/turn or cliffhanger to draw the readers in, especially for those looking for more than just steam. It's still a very enjoyable read and I'll be looking forward to the next installment.

***I would like to thank BookSirens and Lauren Biel (the author) for graciously providing an ARC of the novel for me to read & review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

Another great story by Lauren Biel. Set in the 30s we follow Silvia who is taken as leverage over her mother's debt, which soon turns into Sil fitting right in with the mobsters who took her and becoming part of their 'family'.
The spice was on par, the story was interesting as sometimes with historical stories they can tend to be boring but Lauren put her flare on it and made for a great story with just enough spice to keep you wanting to read more. Excited for part 2!

This book takes place in the 1930’s. Sil lives a plain, lonely life. She lives with her mom and stepdad and works at a diner. She can’t have children so she feels like men don’t want her. Nothing spectacular about her.

Reaper and Vernon walk into her diner and take her in order to speed up payment that is owed from her parents. She knows her mom can’t pay so she goes with them knowing her fate doesn’t look promising.

After a few days, she’s confused. The, now, four guys have been somewhat nice and haven’t tried to hurt her or overpower her at all. They decide to let her go but she decides to stay with the knowledge that they are outlaws during the prohibition.

What will happen now that she has decided to stay? Will she regret it? Will she decide to leave?

I really enjoyed this RH. It was unique in that it took place in a historical capacity. We sometimes forget about our history so it was nice to have that as part of the story. It’s also single POV of the heroine which was interesting and enjoyable. Sil was such a sweet character. The fact that she feels broken and unwanted made me feel for her. Luckily her guys didn’t feel the same and showed her how much they liked her 😏

As always, Mind your triggers. I absolutely fell in love with this story from the first chapter to the very last page. Received as an ARC and so glad I did. As someone with PCOS, I highly connected with our FMC with regards to the fertility issue but so glad she found 4 amazing, if not a little crazy in their own unique ways, men to cherish her and help her grow. Super excited to find out what happens in part 2. Highly recommend

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book was really good, but I only have it 4 stars because I felt like something was missing from the story. I haven't been able to figure out what's missing from the story but I just felt like I was waiting for something that never did. All the events in story were very well written and interesting, but I felt like everything moved to quickly for the story and weren't given the time they needed to develop or fully sink in for me as a reader. It made it feel as if nothing actually went on in the story because everything was treated as minor when there was actually a lot that went on. I was happy to see that there is another book in this series though, so I do have hope that maybe I'll get some of my answers or more what I'm looking for in the next book.

I don't flippantally rate spice so high. There are 4 of them... and they are always hungry for their girl. There's a lot of ✨️GOOD✨️ spice. 🥵🙈

I am reeling right now bc I JUST finished my ARC of Men of Vengeance—book two in the duet. Both of these books... fuuuck me! They were amazing.

So, Men of Mayhem starts out as you might expect it. Silvia is taken from her job as collateral for payment of services [protection] rendered. She's thrust into the world of four beautifully damaged & dangerous men—Reaper, Vernon, Ricky, & Morris

If I could heart eyes... I'd have heart eyes forever for these four. Each one has a different personality & the wonderful thing abt RH, there's no choosing. Sil falls hard and fast for all of them. She needs each of them intrinsically. In some moments she needs one more than the others & you'll understand. Bc there are moments where one shines—taking up the slack of the others. It's kind of like a "where you're weak, I am strong" dynamic between the four. And their comfortablity w/ each other is... endearing and at moments hot AF!

There isn't a MASSIVE amount of action in this book. It's like the starter course, it's where I fell in love with these men & Sil. You start to see their growth through very pivotal moments that are relatable. I mean, I'm not going to gun someone down but I understand the almost murderous desire to protect the ppl I love.

Lauren's writing is captivating & evocative. She really has a way of snatching you up by the balls and dragging you into hell. I cannot wait to review Men of Vengeance. I cannot wait for y'all to read these. You really should. If you're worried abt the single POV, DON'T BE! You literally become Silvia, you experience these men how she does. It's an immersice experience, so take a chance and fall as hard as I did for these men.

The cover is what originally pulled me into reading this book. I loved the Bonnie and Clyde, Peaky Blinders, vibes it was giving. But I had no idea I would enjoy this book as much as I did!

I loved how each of the men were so different. Vernon was such a chaotic and wild character, but the author gives us little sweet moments when the mask falls, and he shows the FMC tenderness. I found myself craving these moments just as much as the main character! If you have read Den of Vipers, he gives off a slight Diesel vibe. I mean Vernon was wild, he had me gagging at one point in the book.

All of the men were such a perfect balance, some harsh and some soft, while Morris was a mixture of all of them. My only complaint is that this book is only around 100 pages and I needed more!

The author has such an easy yet engaging writing style that I really enjoyed. I will be looking forward to the second book in the series as well as reading some of her other published works.

I highly recommend this book to fans of the 1930s era, who love a lot of spice and action!

First off, set in the probation era where the mob had a big presence that was felt not seen, it's clear that Lauren took the time to learn the lingo along with the facts that are important for the time period. The scenes in this book are spicy with details that make you tingle. It's a fast paced book and can easily be read in one day. The story doesn't have many surprising twist and turns and I do wish the relationship did turn back to her family but the heat between characters is what keeps you flipping the page. I'm personally team reaper as my husbands name is one of the other characters and I just cannot get over that! I enjoyed the way the lifestyle of being hidden and always on the run was described. The situations that the characters face are also something that would have been a realistic concern at that time. I cannot wait for the next book to be released!

Silvia is taken as collateral, but when Reaper can’t pull the trigger, she’ll do whatever it takes to stay. F*cking, falling in love, & firing guns… she certainly proves her worth!

Add this to your tbr immediately. Lauren Biel has me wishing I could go back in time & live the 1930s as Silvia!
If you’re into Peaky Blinders, Bonnie & Clyde, or Lawless, you’ll like Men of Mayhem! But make it spicy!!

Honestly could see this being more than a two book series. Vernon’s character development is already so amazing. & I can’t wait to find out more about Morris. I love Ricky but holy hell I am obsessed with Reaper! He’s absolutely end game material! I know the point of RH is that she’s doesn’t have to choose, but he gives so much soul mate energy that I can’t wait to see how their dynamic continues in the next installment.

I think I've come to the conclusion that I just absolutely love all books by Lauren Biel. Like, I love them to a Colleen Hoover, Penelope Douglas level(thats HUGE). This book was absolutely amazing. It was well written, interesting and different to all the other books by Lauren Biel so far. It was set in 1931(and I think in New York) and it reminded me a TON of a few 1940’2 Bucky Barnes fanfics that I used to love. I loved getting to know Reaper, Vernon, Ricky and Morris and I can't wait to see more of them in the next book.
5 stars, I'm totally going to read it again!

I love this historical has taken place in the 30s and during the prohibition era. Sylvia is a barren (you'll understand why and why she brings it up) 30 something woman who was taken as payment by 4 mobsters Reaper, Vernon, Ricky and Morris for her mothers current husbands debt. I just felt nothing super substantial plot wise has happened in this one and I'm not sure if its to blame the novella size length. It was a quick steamy read as Sylvia gets involved with all four as there's nothing going on in her life because she can't have kids. I'm reading the next one next.

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

A reverse harem novella set in the 1930s mob Era. Silvia and her men make their way through these times when another mob sets them into a tailspin and a need for revenge.

I absolutely love everything Lauren Biel writes, whether it's an angsty romance or something darker. This book was right up my alley with a 30s Era setting and men that just make you swoon (looking at you Ricky and Vernon!)

This is a quick read, but don't let that fool you. There is a lot of story, and quite a bit of spice packed into this novella. There are also some triggers to be mindful of, so make sure you check those out before reading!

With Nothing to Lose

First, Lauren Biel hit the nail on the head with the world build. Also originality! I totally engrossed myself into this book from beginning to end. The description was so good, 👌 I visualized everything from the car, arms, bootleg bottles, speakeasy and the walls, everything!!! The characters though, grabbed onto me tightly. I loved their interactions so much and how they were so different. Now, the FMC, Silvia was what I would call a tough broad! Usually women were poorly regarded during that Era. Her situation was the worst it could be. When the opportunity arose, she went forward and had her needs met like she never thought she would. Though it feels like a slow burn, rest assured there's plenty. Somehow along the way they blossomed into a family. The storyline takes you on their escapades full of drama, action, suspense, mayhem. A grat tale. I highly recommend this first book and can't wait for the next installment

A super sexy prohibition era reverse harem that had me wanting so much more. Thank god there is a part 2 coming.

There's Reaper who is all gruff edges and Alpha male protectiveness. Vernon was my favorite right from the start despite being the one who strikes you as borderline unstable. Ricky is the sweet one who you know will be the one that's a gentleman while Morris is the perfect combination of all of them.

The need to know Morris's real name is more than enough reason to read the next book, never mind the need to see what else goes on between them.

4.5 ⭐️⭐️ Based in the 1930’s
Silvia works at a diner, her mom and stepfather have business when they default on their payments. Mobsters Reaper, Vernon, Morris and Ricky take her as collateral. When her mom doesn’t pay they are about to kill her but can’t. Vernon is the brute and loves to fight, Reaper well his name speaks for itself, Morris is the mysterious one and Ricky is the Angel. That is I will say no spoilers but it was one I couldn’t put down. Steam, mobsters, blood, moonshine and even a little humor.

I honestly was skeptical of whether I would like this genre as going back in time is not usually my thing but I’m so glad I jumped into this book and I absolutely cannot wait for the next one. Silvia and her gang of men are crazy, dangerous, brooding, but loyal and caring in their way. They will do whatever they need to for each other and the men will put their lives on the line to keep Sil safe as will she for them. Being a part of Silvia’s journey to discovering herself while watching the men discover new parts of themselves is so much fun. Bring on Men of Vengeance!

I was hooked right from the start and couldn’t put it down. Normally a historical period book isn’t my first choice but after reading the summary I said let’s give it a go. A dark romance with morally gray character. The character dynamic of the Reaper, Vernon, Morris, & Ricky - with there passion for Silvia; chef’s kiss.

It was a fast paced read that I didn’t want to end. I’ll be impatiently waiting for Men of Vengeance.

This was my first Lauren Biel read (and ARC read - thank you for the opportunity); although I have other books of hers on me TBR list. As the dedicated states”…never knowing what kind of ride…” I highly recommend jumping on this ride!!!

I've been a big fan of Lauren's since the first book I read of hers and I was stoked when I found out she wanted to dip into doing a reverse harem! Men of Mayhem is the perfect Prohibition Era gangster novella. It hits hard, fast and keeps you hooked to where you can easily read it all in one sitting. Silvia is an easily relatable FMC and the men all have their distinct personalities, my personal favorite is Morris though Vernon takes a close second. Absolutely can't wait for book 2!

The Men of Mayhem is a dark (and taboo for the 1930's.) It's a RH of dark and depraved individuals. Reaper with his rugged strength, Vernon with his primal craze, Ricky with his sweet demeanor, Morris is quite the mystery. They all love and F^€k differently and I find it so very hot.
“You ain’t just a woman, doll. You’re ours. And we take care of what’s ours.”
I can't wait for the second book!!

This was a short, spicy read. Silvia's life changed in an instant when she was taken by a group of men who were owed money from Silvia's mother.

These men were rough around the edges, criminals, had no mercy for anyone who wronged them even slightly, yet Silvia didn't want to let them go. She accepted this life of crime pretty easily, knowing her old life was not what she really wanted.

A quick, easy read. I look forward to book 2.

I loved this book.

Silvia is kidnapped by four dangerous gangsters. Reaper, Vernon, Ricky, and Morris take her as collateral for protection money her mom hasn't paid. Turns out she doesn't much mind being their captive. It's a tough sell but the guys decide they'll let her tag along for awhile at least.

Their story is continued in the second book"Men of Vengeance."

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a really fun mobster historical reverse harem romance. Not my usual read but I really enjoyed the story that the author weaved.

I couldn’t really connect with any of the characters though because for me there wasn’t enough shown that really let me get invested in them.

I enjoyed the story line with the MC from not wanted to part of the group. I do wish that there weren’t so much rushing from scene to scene. It parts in felt like the author had written the scenes and then just tried to connect them rather then it feeling like the scenes flowed from one to another naturally.

I would read this author again even with it not being my usual genre when it comes to historical time frame.

Lauren has once again out done herself! This was a pleasent surprise from her usual I read. First things first, please check your triggers, we all know Laurens books get down and dirty! It's set in the 1930's prohibition era, so if course there's bootlegging. I'm a huge history buff, so for me this was an entertaining read. She definitely did her research on this era. It's so hard to explain without too many spoilers, so here's a teeny bit of it: RH, debt that gets collected, badass female, and hot smutty scenes.

I thought it was a great short and fast paced read. There was action, a bit of angst and steam! The book gave me a Bonnie and Clyde feel, but RH style. I really like the guys and Silvia. I liked that they were all different but still fit together as a family. I can't wait for book 2!!
