The alchemist, the messenger, and the true king must join together and destroy soran, the island’s ancient pools of long life and immunity. Will the three heroes put aside their differences to unify, or will they fall apart, along with the rest of the island?

Nohea will do anything to keep her loved ones from dying, but she is forced to watch as her fellow slaves succumb to illnesses and infections. Enraged by her inability to help, Nohea vows to find a cure, a remedy that could change the future of Kaimana island.
Little does she know that there is a cure… but it comes with a price, a heavy price. With a turn of the tides, Nohea finds herself wound up in politics, deceit, and betrayal. Rumors spread that a true ali‘i (king) of Kaimana Island is rising, one who will bring peace and balance to the island. Will Nohea listen to the promptings of her heart and follow him, losing all that she’s worked for, or pursue the course she vowed to follow?

A gifted alchemist, a messenger, and a true king who hasn't revealed himself all have intertwined fates in this young adult epic fantasy set in ancient Hawai'i with high stakes, emotional turmoil, love, greed, power struggles, mythical creatures, and more. It was refreshing to have an epic fantasy set in a different world than dystopia or medieval times. And it was a clean read! Jump into this Island adventure and find new characters to love, hate, and root for!

Trigger warning: there is a medical procedure that might freak some people out later on in the book.

A slave who has been trained by her mother as a healer and alchemist runs away with the help of a messenger of the man who should be the king. Will they be able to work together to reclaim the island and bring peace. I loved learning about Hawaiian mythology and disruption and instability that occurred after explorers came to Hawaii. I love fantasy. I love that the island speaks to people if they are willing to listen- but not always when or what they want to hear. I enjoyed the variety of characters and their realistic but sometimes flawed choices. I am super not a romance person and didnt really get the emphasis and description of attraction. Lucky for me that wasnt a major part of the book- too much to do. We have our scientist main character trying to figure out what Soran is- a liquid that is highly addictive but extends life, heals and gives power to people. Is she going to destroy it for the true king or make it for the current king?

My biggest mistake in reading this book is finding out too late that this is a new book and now i have to wait for book two. The struggle is real. Its not a fantastic book. There are minor questions i have about new information like a certain curse that was never alluded to or hinted at before but once we know it becomes a major thing. But it is good. The mythology is interesting and i am invested in the characters so I want to find out what happens to them.

So author. Keep writing. Some random lady wants to know what happens with these people.
