Big Bad Me

‘I’ve got two claws, Katie. Two giant, evil, freaking Freddy Krueger monster things. I am not calm.’

Evie Wilder is living a very normal life. Except for the fact that her mum has gone missing, she’s just found out she’s a werewolf, she and her sister have to go into hiding from supernatural beings, and there’s not a single
helpful vampire slayer to be found.

With the help of Kevin, the dorky-hot teenage manager of the guesthouse where Evie and Kate go to lie low, Evie begins to learn to harness her wolfish abilities. But there’s something a bit odd about Kevin that Evie can’t quite put her finger on.
Meanwhile, reports of animal attacks are increasing, local teenagers have started to go missing, and Evie is about to find herself at the centre of a supernatural showdown.

Think Buffy meets the Scooby Doo gang with sapphic rep ✨

This was honestly a joy to read. Finding YA sapphic vampire/werewolf books is basically impossible so when I heard about this I got so freaking excited.

Big bad me is dual voice, we have Evie’s (werewolf) perspective, and Kate’s (hunter) perspective. I have mixed feelings about dual voice but this was done SO WELL. You feel like both voices are very different and clearly laid out so there’s never any confusion as to whose talking, and both characters are equally as gripping.

There’s two romances in this novel: Evie and a guy (who I shall not name) and Kate and a girl (who I also shall not name, we love some mystery.) The WLW romance has slightly less development but is still there, and both romances are fairly background to the main (wolf) plot.

Big Bad Me is steeped in spooky vibes and mystery, (and a lot of cheesy jokes and humour for younger YA readers to love) as the girls try to find their mother and Evie comes into her wolf powers but must learn to harness them. It’s very Buffy with the town feels, reminiscent of Sunnydale. But the group themselves, teens banding together to solve a mystery is very Scooby Doo esque which I loved.

It’s got a lot of grit and action, but it’s definitely also more accessible to the younger YA scale. I know a lot of people have said some of YA is definitely more geared towards older teens but this is easy to follow language and storylines with no mentions of sex. Saying that, I’m 26 and still enjoyed reading this one.

Voices/ Rep: Evie (WLM, werewolf) , Kate (WLW, hunter). Evie is Kate’s adopted sister. Adoption rep in this is positive and wholesome, not trauma based.

Thank you to Little Island for providing me with an ARC for review.

TW’s//CW’s below (please skip this part if you do not want any vague spoilers)

Tw//Cw// Murder, Vague animal harm (brief), Blood drinking, Gaslighting, Drugging (against knowledge), Self harm mentions (c-section, clawing.), Age gap (vampire), Tranquillisers, Guns, Parental abandonment, Scenes with vomiting, Fire/arson mentions, Hostages, Mild gore.

I'm the author, so very biased, but I really do love this book and its characters. They made me laugh (and cry, because - edits!) and I miss writing them already, it was a lot of fun. So, you know, top marks. 100% would write again, if I could.

This book has vampires and werewolves and is set in small town called Brightside, which is very reminiscent of Sunnydale, California. Buffy or Supernatural fans would love this campy one. At times it's predictable, if you're familiar with werewolf and vampire stories, but I loved it. The pop culture references might date it later on, but I enjoyed them. They fit the story here and added to the characters' ingrained love of "the lore", as Sam Winchester would say. Evie, one of the main characters, is a natural born werewolf, but her adoptive mom and sister, Kate, have hidden that from her by controlling it with silver and a sedative for years. Suddenly, the concoction is not working like it used to, and Kate takes them in search of their mom, who has been trying to find a way to control Evie's werewolf side her whole life. Kate is also a lesbian in love with their next-door neighbor, Zoe, who finally asks her out as they are leaving. The sisters end up in Brightside, not a town you want to be out in after dark. In the beginning, the gaslighting Kate commits against Evie is horrendous, but Evie's love for her sister wins out as she accepts who she is, wolf and all, and proves to Kate that she can handle this crazy life she's been forced into. The story with its supernatural characters and events is a great twist on the old nature vs. nurture argument.

I received this book from Little Island in exchange for an honest reviews.

2.5 stars

Evie Wilder is a normal teenager, or so she thinks until one day she discovers that she is a werewolf, and her sister is a monster slayer. Now the Wilder sisters have to go on the run to look for their missing mother and end up in a small town called Brightside that appears to have a bit of a vampire problem.

This book is fun and quirky, full of teenagers doing what they do best without adult supervision - drinking a lot of hot chocolate, eating pizza and oh yeah, killing some monsters. I couldn't help but enjoy some of the antics going on this book and obviously appreciate the sisterly relationship in this as well which is one of the strongest relationships in the book. I can imagine that there are many moments in this book that would appeal to fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as the whole story is a little bit campy in a way old school horror and supernatural media used to be.

I do wish the book took some time to slow down in parts and give some proper build up to everything that happened. It felt like everything was happening at a rapid pace from the moment the book starts and the girls run away from Stalker Rom, to arriving in Brightside and immediately learning about Asher from Kevin and Chris. It felt like relationships and characters appeared out of nowhere from Kevin hating Evie to flipping and wanting to help her in the space of a couple of pages, as well as Kate befriending Felix and Cass, and then the latter being dead and Felix needing to be saved all in one go. There were times this book and the writing style reminded me a lot of original supernatural fan fiction I used to read back in the day as everything focused on the characters and all this action going on instead of actually building up a scene and creating atmosphere and build up.

I do think this book would appeal to many readers though particularly anyone who loves Buffy, The Vampire Diaries, Riverdale aka any CW show with teen or supernatural influences. It's not a book to be taken too seriously, it's one you just need to hop onto and enjoy the ride it takes you on.

that was so much fun!

4 stars!

I absolutely ADORED this spooky, paranormal YA. Steeped in mystery and dramatic antics, this novel was incredibly self-aware. I don't mean that as a critique. I mean it as a whole-hearted compliment. O'Loughlin, in crafting this story, leaned entirely into those nostalgic, somewhat cheesy (in the best way) tropes of all our favourite paranormal TV shows and films such as Buffy, Scooby-Do, Supernatural, and Teen Wolf. Filled with humour and theatricality, it contained the same addictiveness found in the media it is so reminiscent of -- I was unable to peel my eyes away from what was going to happen next.

I thought that the dual POV gave the story a lot of dimension. Both Kate's and Evie's voices are distinct and clear, making it very easy to follow and engaging. This also allowed readers to get a well-defined picture of Evie and Kate's relationship which was one of my favourite aspects of this book. It was so refreshing to read about these two! The strength of their bond along with their mutual respect, appreciation, and desire to protect one another is something so rare to find in YA, especially between sisters, and was very well depicted.

There were also two romances that were a delight to read (one of which I was high-key invested in, to be completely honest). However, what I liked the most about them was how, though they were there, they did not overwhelm the plot or the other themes/aspects of the book, unlike so many YA recently. I truly felt that what remained at the forefront of this novel was the importance of family, sisterhood, and friendship -- with which anything is possible.

I really hope that O'Loughlin considers writing more in this world and more stories about these characters because I for one would definitely pick it up. If not, I look forward to what this author will do next!

After receiving this book in exchange for my honest review from net galley. My daughter scooped up the kindle and read it. She is 14.

This review is in her words:

This book was so good. I didn't want to stop reading it. I love a vampire and werewolf reads. ones that aren't super gross. This book was so perfect. I love the friendships that form. It was just fun to read. The only time I put it down was when I had to because I needed to do chores or eat. But then I was right back at it. I hope that there is another book with these characters. I felt good with the way the book read. Now I want to get my mom and friends to read it. I think they would really enjoy it. As would anyone thats looking for a good vampire/werewolf book. Perfect for that spooky time of year.

Big Bad Me is a fun and thrill-packed riot of a book - full of heart, with everything I look for from a supernatural romp including wonderful quippy dialogue and characters readers will fall in love with. I certainly did! If it wasn't for the, you know, vampires and werewolves, I would totally want to hang out with Evie, Kate, Kevin and co drinking hot chocolate. Big Bad Me also hits a real sweet spot between feeling fresh and modern, but also evocative of supernatural shows I remember from my own teen years, most notably Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was brilliant and completely refreshing, and simply so much fun as well as exciting and tense. I recommend you pickup a copy immediately and read while drinking hot chocolate.

What a debut! The perfect mix of fresh writing, unforgettable characters, pacy story and a subtle dose of nostalgia.

Big Bad Me is a dual POV YA told between two teenage sisters, Evie and Kate, whose lives get a little more complicated when their mum goes missing and a mysterious man shows up and attacks them. And then Evie starts spontaneously growing wolf claws…

First things first, the characters in this are truly top notch. I adored them all. The relationship dynamics between Evie and Kate, Evie and Kevin; and Kate and Kevin (and all of those guys and more minor characters) were all so well done, but a special shout out to the sisterly love between Evie and Kate, because OH my heart! It’s so lovely to read a book where a strong sisterly relationship is foregrounded like this.

The humour was the other thing that surprised and delighted me. Big Bad Me is utterly hilarious, but with none of the cringe that sometimes permeates YA comedy (which I know some people love, but is not really my thing). Here the humour is sharp, but never mean, and there were plenty of times I found myself smiling or chuckling out loud. O’Loughlin has an incredible sense of timing, so much so that one of my favourite laughs came from a moment that was quite ‘throwaway’ (you’ll know when you get there).

The story is as fresh and original as the tone. It’s kind of a mystery, kind of a step-into-your-power, a hefty dose of found family. I don’t know, I just know I loved it.

Finally, the nostalgia! It’s not in your face and readers who haven’t seen Buffy, or Stranger Things, or…Frozen… will enjoy it all at face value without feeling like anything has been missed. But for me, this was a huge part of what I loved. The snappy, sometimes snarky dialogue, quick-witted characters and relationship dynamics filled the Buffy-shaped hole I didn’t know still existed within me, but even better, the cast is more diverse and none of this Scooby gang are weird insecure misogynists (hello Xander, yes you’re still the worst). There are subtle references sprinkled throughout that act as clear nods to the inspiration behind BBM and I was here for them.

I thoroughly recommend BBM to anyone and everyone, particularly because although there was a definite and satisfying conclusion which makes this a standalone, I kind of feel like there’s series potential there and frankly I need enough of you on board to make that happen.

Thank you so much to the author and publisher for sending this ARC. Now if I could just get a sequel confirmation please?

Evie Wilder just found out she’s a werewolf. And no, that isn’t the end of her problems.

Hiding away in a little guesthouse in a little town where teens are going missing, Evie starts to learn how to harness wolf-Evie with the help of her sister Kate and the dorky-hot guesthouse manager. But Kevin (not Kev!) seems to know a suspicious amount about the world of the supernatural and a showdown is just waiting to happen.

𝗛𝗲’𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝙗𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗻𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲.

Big Bad Me gave me everything I was promised. Buffy x Riverdale vibes ✔️ kickass sisters ✔️ dorky-hot love interest ✔️ an LGBTQ+ main character ✔️ monster found family ✔️✔️✔️

Jumping right into the plot as soon as you begin reading, this book is fun all the way through. I found myself laughing along with the characters, whilst also giving me enough drama to keep me gripped. I felt like part of their little family. And don’t get me started on the sickly-awkward-sweet romance!

This was honestly just the perfect novel to fill that quippy paranormal creature hole in my heart during July and I can’t wait for everyone to read it when it’s released in October! You really don’t want to miss this!

This book was like being on a new rollercoaster with all the amazing classic thrills.

I have been a Buffy fan since the original movie and this book was perfect nostalgia in a modern setting, tied with a big red bow!

The characterisation was on point with original yet relatable dialogue. Genius. I loved the romance element, but the best part for me was the kick ass sisters and their bond. Bonus feature--found family.

I have been waiting for a great new werewolf/vampire novel and here it is. Thank you Aislinn. Brilliance!

BIG BAD ME is a paranormal romp filled with vampires and werewolves in a small town with a big infestation.

This book takes so many paranormal tropes and has so much fun with them. What happens when a teen discovers their a werewolf and then ends up in a vampire-infested town? A complete disaster. There are lots of accidents, staking vampires, and gore in sort of a comedy-horror vein.

It also brings the audience in on it, with all sort of wry "retrospective" comments. These allow the book to bring in elements earlier than the characters realise it so it feels like you're inside the joke, waiting for the characters to catch on.

Both Evie and Kate narrate, giving the reader a front row view into their chaotic, messy lives. I really liked getting both perspectives, the protectiveness of their relationship that stems from a deep love.

This book really nails the teenage experience, the intense stakes of every action, the absolutely awful decisions, and the clumsy awkwardness of navigating relationships. These are not adults pretending to be teens, but rather feel authentically like young teens trying to get through life - which would be tricky enough without all the added monsters.

The interior design of this book is fab. For example, the "wolfier" Evie gets, the bigger the claw marks on the pages. It's such a nice little touch which makes the books look fun as well as being fun.

Really enjoyed this, to my great surprise!
Love a rom-com, but werewolves and vampires? Really not my cup of tea!
But I found this so much fun. I loved the interaction between the characters; sarcastic, funny, believable.
I enjoyed all the hints at what was coming: subtle enough for me to feel like I’d worked it all out myself!
I’ve never read anything like this. I’m not comparing it with Twilight at all, but if I hadn’t seen those films, there’s a fair bit that would have been totally unfamiliar to me, especially the ‘blurring’ and moving super fast.
I thought the fight scenes with lots of characters were a little hard to follow at times but I appreciate that there wasn’t too much dwelling on the violence/gore.
I’m a school librarian and totally intend to buy and recommend this to my pupils. It’s refreshing that there isn’t bad language and/or sexual content.
Thank you to Little Island for an ARC. (The simple fact that I read this on my computer is testament to how much I enjoyed it!)

I picked up this book because favourite author Kat Ellis said how good it was, and she is right!

It’s fun, sassy and snarky. It’s got vampires, werewolves, found family, handsome nerds, weird emos, badass ladies and families who actually love and care about each other.

I tore through this (no pun intended) and will happily reread. If Aislinn O'Loughlin produces this much fun as her debut, I can’t wait to read what she has in the future.

NOTE: Big Bad Me will be the subject of spoiler filled discussion on Fictional Hangover podcast in December 2022. Head on over to listen!

Big Bad Me is YA werewolf perfection. Reading this book is a fun and exciting rollercoaster. Aislinn’s writing it so pacy and really draws you in. I loved the characters and the way they interact with each other.
This original book is written so well and is destined to become a classic. I loved how the whole I didn’t know I was a werewolf and now my body is changing thing could be a metaphor for puberty. A dazzling debut you can’t put down.

Loved this book! It had everything I didn’t know I needed in a story, from werewolves to vampires to creepy towns to romance to ‘Buddy-esq’ fighting. It gave me strong sister bonds and Canadian diners whilst reminding me of 1980s films like the Goonies. What a talent this author is. I want a sequel!!

If you want to sum up Big Bad Me in one word it's "fun". This book is heavy in the Buffy vibes and all the hilarious, Scooby Gang banter that you'd expect from a really good episode of Buffy. I don't often laugh aloud at books but this one made me chortle several times.

Big Bad Me unfolds thought the eyes of our two dual protagonists Kate and Evie, both of whom are loveable, deep and with their own unique voices and personalities that makes following them a joy. There's also a heartwarming focus on found family that worked as a brilliant through-line between the adventure and mystery. At the end of everything, you'll want to just see these people go on endless journeys together, having fun and hanging out with their friends.

A delightful supernatural book with dashes of romance and comedy and enough adventure to fill that Buffy-shaped hole you might be missing!

Review is written in both languages ESP/ENG

/

ENG

To be honest, part of me doesn’t feel good about giving this book 3 stars because it’s not bad, but the truth is, I didn’t like it. It’s likely that a younger version of me would have enjoyed it more, but it’s definitely not for me anymore.

In Big Bad Me, we follow the journey of two sisters, Evie and Katie, as they search for their missing mother. A simple premise, until we realize that Evie is a werewolf (not a spoiler, it’s in the synopsis), which adds a layer of complexity to the plot.

One of my mistakes was believing this would be a story with sapphic love, which, unfortunately, it wasn’t. That alone left me a bit disappointed because I only tolerate straight love under very specific conditions:

1. I’m in the mood for it.
2. It’s a fantasy story.

And, unfortunately for Big Bad Me, neither of these conditions was met. Worse yet, to my frustration, I couldn’t connect with the only queer character in the story or their half-baked romantic sidestory.

Would I recommend this story? Only to people who are just starting out in the world of reading or are looking for something very simple and light.

A supernatural YA adventure story that packs a lot of action and laughs. This is such a fun read told from the dual POV of two sisters Evie and Kate. Evie has just discovered she is a werewolf and is battling with her inner monster, whilst her huntress sister fiercely tries to protect her. With their mum missing, and the town under the onslaught of animal attacks and missing teens, they go into hiding. Evie is drawn to the hot manager, but he hides a different side. Love stories feature for both sisters with an LGBTQ+ romance at the fore, but these are secondary to the supernatural showdown in the book with the clash of vampires, werewolves and wrestling with one's inner monster. If you love teen dramas like Buffy, The Vampire Diaries and good old fashioned mysteries uncovered ScoobyDoo style, then this is the book for you. Brimming with adventure, full of heart and touching on some deeper issues, you are promised a great read whether you are a teen or are embracing your inner teen. A fantastic start to the book, the prologue gets you hooked in right away! There's lots of mystery running all the way through the book to keep you intrigued. The alternating points of view of Evie and her older sister Kate were great, I really enjoyed getting both sides of the story. I also liked the way the characters kind of talk back at the reader, as if we're there with them.
The poppy seed thing is a hilarious twist. I had never heard such a thing before, but just after this I read a book with something similar for fairies and salt. I won't spoil the fun here but look out for it!

Title: Big Bad Me
Author: Aislinn O'Loughlin
Genre: Young Adult - YA Urban Fantasy - YA Fantasy
Publisher: Little Island Books - Copyright 2023
Publication Date: April 11, 2023
ISBN: 9781915071040
Read: April 2-4, 2023
Disclaimer: I received a digital advance reader copy from the publisher via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Trigger Warnings: Animal harm (brief), blood drinking, self-harm, drugs/being drugged without knowledge, and mild gore.

Synopsis from Publisher: Canadian teenager Evie Wilder just found out she’s a werewolf. Now her mom’s gone missing, she and her sister Kate have to go into hiding, and there’s not a single helpful vampire slayer to be found.

With the help of Kevin, the dorky-hot manager of the guesthouse where she and Kate lie low, Evie starts to harness her wolfish side. But Kevin seems to know a suspicious amount about vampires…

Meanwhile, animal attacks are increasing, local teens are going missing, and Evie is about to find herself at the centre of a supernatural showdown.

Review: I loved this book! As a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, I was often reminded of the beloved series, and yet Aislinn O'Loughlin's writing comes across as fresh and immediate.

Told from the dual perspective of sisters Evie and Kate, Big Bad Me is a fun romp filled with werewolves, vampires, slayers, snark, and humor. Evie is just learning that the slightly odd life she thought she had is actually much, much weirder because she's a werewolf and her mom and sister have been trying to keep that fact from her. Now their mom is missing and it's up to Kate--who's a Buffy-esque hunter--and Evie to find her. Throw in a hot guy who knows far more than he should, Kate's crush on the girl next door, general teenaged mayhem, and it's a party!

O'Loughlin's world definitely pays homage to Buffy, Scooby-Doo, Stranger Things, and others in the young adult urban fantasy genre, but also stands on its own as a new voice within that genre. The characters are multi-dimensional and the world is familiar and yet new in its approach. Some of the pop culture references may not hold up over time, but that shouldn't detract from the overall enjoyment of the book. Overall, Big Bad Me is worth the read simply for the pleasure of having read a great book.

This was fun and it got better as it went on. I liked the whole vampires taking over a town and an awkward geek used to be the Big Bad but my main problem was with the main character. I know she's a teenager so she's meant to be annoying but did she honestly never question her 'diabetes shots' that her mum made in a special lab? Also, if she's so dangerous why would her mum leave her with just her sister in the first place? I get that I'm overthinking but her sister has lots of injuries that were caused by her over the years and it's sort of just swept under the rug.

As I say, this book got better as the story picked up and the interactions got better. It did feel like it was trying to push the vampire/werewolf story that we've seen a few too many times though. Would I read a sequel? Probably. It was a fun book and now we have all the characters set up I think it'd be interesting to see what happens.
