Rate this book
After discovering Dr. Lucien Sabara's sinister plot to alter future generations of humankind through genetic manipulation, Dr. Gabrielle Gale and Lt. Christopher Silver must continue their fight to stop the plans of this ruthless scientist at all costs.

In a time of pandemics and disease, the ailing world finds itself on its knees, desperate for the cure promised by leading geneticist Dr. Lucien Sabara. With his simple EVE-0 treatment, he seemingly offers an answer to the world's prayers. Though, as Gabrielle and Chris learn, the geneticist's true agenda is to play God over humankind, forcing women to require medical intervention to conceive, allowing Lucien to edit unborn embryos in order to create a better race, a more equal race, a more EVOLVED race.

Having joined forces with the Amazonian Matsés people, Gabrielle and Chris must thwart Sabara's plans to create a "better" human race. But as Gabrielle uncovers more details of the geneticist's plan, she must face her own moral dilemma. As she wrestles with her own questions of ethics, Gabrielle must decide if saving humanity is worth sacrificing the very thing that makes us human.

So reading this book took me more than what I expected. My life has been a whole roller coaster right now, but reading this was a good time for me to think about something else, so this is the second book in the Eve-O duology. It talks about he talks about science about thriller. It really talks about how humans sometimes want to manipulate and change things that work in our best aspect ( eugenics ?) and I think that that is some thing that we see more and more in these current time. The whole pandemic reminds me of walking dead and I love that show so reading this book is really nice. I really like Gabby shes true to her character !

The only bad aspect of it I would say is the ending. I was hoping for a little bit more and I feel like I was a little bit flat. I would love a little insight, even if it’s not another book, but just knowing what happens to Gabby and Chris like what is the ending? Is there something else going on? Is it just ending there? I just finished with a lot of questions on my mind. I generally don’t have anything bad to say the book is not that long, the writing is fluent, so yeah I don’t really have anything bad to say about that. Bravo Danielle 🩷

One gene. It changed the human race. Took them to edge of extinction. But is there any cure?

The gene will manipulate the human course and it change the future of evolution.
. there is a cure promised but that's not delivered.

A roller coaster ride this is

Liked the scientific explanation.

Book is fine.

Lucien, from Eve-0 the first book, has been interesting. His parents beliefs and practices that are synonyms to the controversial gist of the rich and wealthy trying to curb population...
Showing us a bigger picture of this intricate character was wholesome.
I think this is one villain that's got my empathy 😂
Amazing read.

I recommend it

The story is full of science, spirituality, and mysticism and action. I liked that there are some strong women in the story, not just one. I enjoyed the ending but it ended too abruptly for my taste.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

In this second part of this duology we follow Gabby and Chris who in a dystopian world are trying to prevent the geneticist Lucien from continuing with his plans to genetically modify humans to make the race evolve, hiding everything in the promise of a cure against a terrible disease, facing different threats and problems, our protagonists will have to stop it and discover the whole truth.

In this second volume the author takes us to a story with much more action than in the first and the accelerated pace is present from the beginning of the story making this a quite addictive book that you do not want to put down so as not to miss what follows. , in this aspect I feel that the book is much more intriguing and full of suspense.

As for the characters, they are well defined and constructed, they are complex and very interesting, Gabby is a strong character who even makes us think a little more about how ethical these practices are and if we would ever be able to reach something like this when the technology does not allow it, and together with Chris they face dangerous, wild and terrible situations and the author knew how to take them in a great way throughout the story.

Although I felt that sometimes the pace was too fast, overall the book is very interesting and the story is very addictive, and it is also easy and quick to read.

I am very grateful to the author and Booktasters for sending the digital book for this collaboration that I really enjoyed.

Lucien is the follow-up to Eve-0, and it was an enjoyable read. The dystopian world that has succumbed to pandemics and the measures taken is timely and quite scary. I struggled a bit with the pacing of this book. Some things seemed to be drug out, while others seemed rushed. However, it did not stop me from reading every last word to see what would happen next. I thoroughly enjoyed how the author set the novel and the unique people on the pages.

Lucien had so many twist-and-turns on every page. Lucien is a fascinating character who is trying to play God with medicine and gnomes. I hope Gabrielle and Chris will do battle with Lucien again. Don't want to give too much away. Read it for yourself, you won't be disappointed. I hope there is another plot twist. I thoroughly enjoyed Lucien.

Review posted on my blog The Writer's Library.

When I picked up EVE-0 by Danielle Gomes, I was disappointed that the story ultimately did not click with me in the end. However, there was a concept that was introduced that kept me interested in the sequel. I have had reading experiences in the past where the sequel ended up being more fulfilling for me than the prequel. I was hoping that that would potentially happen with this duology given what I was anticipating would be explored.
And the good news is, I did end up liking this story more, for multiple reasons. Gomes’ ideas continue to fascinate me, and it felt like a lot of the things I complained about last time did not impact this story as much.
Before I go into it further, let’s see what the story is about.
Summary
After some time fighting the global pandemics, the world finds itself desperate for a cure, and Dr. Lucien Sabara has one with his EVE-0 treatment. However, Dr. Gabrielle Gale knows that his cure is not just a cure, but a treatment that will allow Lucien to recreate humanity in his own image.
As the world becomes more desperate for the pandemics to end and Gabrielle learns more about Lucien’s plan, even she must wrestle with what is right, as the geneticist’s offers begin to tempt her as well.
Will Gabrielle overcome the temptations to do what is right? Or will Lucien’s power overcome her?
Thoughts
So, there were many different aspects of this story that I liked a lot. Because EVE-0 was largely set with Gabby’s group and only occasionally cut back to Lucien and his allies, I never really got to see exactly what the repercussions for Lucien’s actions were. I absolutely adore that we see what his projects are doing in more explicit detail in this sequel! It explains a lot of what occurred in the previous volume, while also expanding upon several things that were hinted at in EVE-0.
However, there is one plot development in this story that I am having a difficult time buying. While I do see the idea behind this concept, in my opinion, it did not work as intended. I will explain further in the structure section.
Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, let’s look at some of the characters!
Characters
Dr. Gabrielle (Gabby) Gale
Gabby goes through significant changes in this volume compared to the last. I was hopeful upon finishing EVE-0 that her character would get involved quite a bit more. I am very excited about the role she plays in this story! While we do still see moments of her needing aid from others, I feel like she is more active in the story’s plotline! Seeing her decisions directly impact the story and how she does her best to cope as the narrative unfolds is amazing! I like seeing her make decisions and go through with them despite any repercussions they may have for her.
Aside from that, there is a new element with her character that I want to discuss. It is interesting to see how, as she learns more about what Amcorps is doing, she starts to doubt her own judgement in the situation and considers what they offer her. Not only is this a very intriguing change of pace, but it shows just how after everything she has been through, she wants a normal life after years of living in pandemic after pandemic. It felt relatable to see her so tired after everything that all she desired was a sense of what she used to have.
Dr. Lucien Sabara
Seeing Lucien’s goals start to come to fruition is incredible! It is horrifying to see just how powerful this man has become and how his actions will affect others. I mentioned in my review of the prequel how previously we only got a taste of this, but seeing it in full here from Lucien himself is amazing!
However, it is not just what his actions lead to that is impactful. Seeing how Lucien reacts to the results of his actions is gripping, and it makes any scene with him incredibly difficult to put down. He truly believes that his goal is for the better of humanity, but to see the reality right up against his beliefs provides an amazing comparison between the two.
Structure
While Gomes does not change the structure for this installment too much, there are a few things I want to point out. First and foremost, there were more character perspectives that helped significantly to flesh scenes out. However, there is one perspective in here that I did not like. We get this perspective through video messages, and in my opinion, it did not work because they felt jarring and out of place, and I also didn’t buy the messages, either.
Moving back to the positive things, I loved that there were sections solely following Gabby! There weren’t too many of these in the previous installment, so I feel it is important to highlight how they changed the structure of the narrative. They do add more to her character, but they are also used to drive up the stakes of the plot and create conflict and anticipation. I was looking for something to build anticipation in the last book, so to see it happen here and in this way feels like the narrative is coming full circle.
Writing
There is one thing I want to mention about the prose. Mainly, I want to discuss the use of mood and tone. I’ll start with Lucien himself first, because Gomes uses the tone of the narrative to illustrate the context of his scenes beautifully. The mood whenever he is around suggests a degree of opulence and arrogance, where he has so much but still wants more. The prose has a snap to it that makes his sections incredibly interesting!
I love how Gomes shows what he wants, but the actual reality doesn’t fail to account for the disturbing aspects of his actions. That said, sometimes calling out the disturbing details went too far, and there were times where the writing was a bit too on-the-nose, but these situations were ultimately rare and didn’t take me out of the story for too long.
Conclusion
I am very excited about how much I enjoyed this sequel! I think Gomes has woven together a rather interesting story that I am glad I stuck with, a narrative that ultimately ended up having a message that will stay with me for a while. For this reason, I will be giving this conclusion to the duology four stars.

After reading EVE-0 I immediately started with the sequel LUCIEN.
The author continued the story as thrilling as she ended the first book.
It's full of action, adventure and it's fascinating to read how the characters from the first book develop. Especially Gabby is growing into a stronger woman who takes responsibility.
We get to know Lucien better - his basic intentions are good but what he wants to make of the chance he gets is going too far.
The book is a page turner like EVE-0...

And the ending gives me hope that we might get another sequel... there's much more to tell I'm sure (at least I wonder what happens with some characters- no spoilers)

Lucien is a fascinating book. It has so many thought provoking premises, like would it be advisable to eliminate the threat of all diseases? Antibiotics have saved lives, but can they be dangerous?
Can bacteria actually CAUSE humans to evolve? Can humans be safely revamped into something genetically superior? Here's how the story goes: after COVID-19, the world is afflicted with multiple deadly diseases which kill literally millions of people. Leading scientists have pursued a theory that bacteria actually aid in the process of evolution. One example is that a specific group survived the bubonic plague because bacteria caused humans to evolve and become better equipped to deal with this dread disease. Unfortunately, recent less discriminate use of antibiotics stunted this evolution and rendered people less capable, or incapable, of fending off previously minor diseases such as influenza. Humanity is in peril. The plan is hatched to venture into the Amazon forest and locate human "specimens" whose DNA still can evolve and might be used to save mankind.

The leading character is Dr. Gabrielle Gale, a University of Pennsylvania emergency room doctor who is tapped, along with her significant other Trent and scientist Chris to locate and identify residents of the rain forest who might have the EVE-O to restart the bacteriological evolution. The "bad guy" in this is Dr. Lucien Sabara, the head of the CDC, who believes in eugenics and wishes to form a genetically superior race. Who will win? Beneath this backdrop of scientific theory is an adventure story of real human beings, and it's worth a look.

This book talks about future developments in biotechnology and genetic engineering.
In fact, the premise, although grim, sounds quite realistic.
Therefore, it's really thought-provoking and might serve as a wake-up call as well.

It's a fast-paced read with lots of adventure & suspense, coupled with some moral dilemmas and psychological insights.

Apparently, it's the second part of a duology classified as a medical thriller.
However, the ending feels a bit open indeed.
Maybe there's some room for a trilogy after all, if appropriate.

Overall, the story is enjoyable, the characters are well developed and their motives are clear.
The writing style is immersive.

Recommended to fans of the genre.

This is the second book in the duology, following the first, which is EVE-0.

I enjoyed reading about Gabby again, as I wanted to find out what happened next for her. I was also interested to see what part the titular character would play in this second book, and he was a pretty interesting character.

I felt that in some ways, this second book was slightly more action packed than the first, and maybe a little bit more emotional to read, as I'd become slightly attached to some of the characters in the first book. Having said that, if you liked the first book, I don't think you would be disappointed.

This is the second part of this duology, and a pandemic and diseases are bringing the world to its knees, Gabby and Chris have discovered Lucien has his own agenda and plans to create a better human race, and they need to work together to intervene and prevent this happening. This is another good story which has intrigue, suspense, danger, twists, and is a thrilling page turner. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Having read both books, Lucien is definitely my favorite out of both parts. I love how it's constantly a reminder of how being so caught up in the moment and not considering anything or anyone else around you can mess up literally everything around you. I loved Gabby's and Chris's chemistry tbh got me on the edge however the ending didn't really match my expectations as it was somewhat bland. It didn't hold as many feelings or details compared to the rest of the novel. Big Thanks to BookTasters for recommending me this novel which overall is a great read and I do recommend it!

Gripping exploration of power's misuse. It vividly demonstrates how one person's choice can affect countless lives. It is a beautiful reminder on why empathy for humanity is invaluable. I enjoyed it. Lovely pace. If you're in for something mentally stimulating that also engages your emotions, I'd highly recommend. Nice work 💯

Upon starting this book, I was just as confused as the characters at the beginning. It seemed like everything was all happening so fast.
However, as I read on. It all started coming together.

What I really liked about Lucien was that other than being one of the best sci-fi books that I have read in a while. The book was really well written and every sentence just flowed seamlessly.

i love the thriller-science method of writing. A very good book, i don’t regret reading it. My favorite character was gabby because she was a very real one. I think teens and adults should read the book. It took me a while to finish this book cause it wasn’t something i was used to

Having read EVE-O, the first book of Danielle Gomes’s duology, I was excited to dig into Lucien to see how this exciting and intelligent tale concludes. Building on the events that left us begging for more at the end of EVE-O, Gomes immediately launches her main characters, Gabby and Chris, into a frantic race deep into the Amazon to save mankind and thwart the evil ambitions of the formidable Lucien. The author’s extensive research is once again on display throughout the book, yet Gomes does a commendable job of parceling it out without slowing the pace of the story. Lucien succeeds on the strength of its characters, who are faced with truly daunting odds to overcome, a chilling antagonist to best, and painful moral quandaries to navigate. They are determined to overcome every challenge thrown in their path, but nothing comes easy as they encounter setbacks we never see coming. Lucien is another terrific story from Danielle Gomes and a fitting finale the duology. I look forward to her next project.
