For fans of OUTLANDER... Courage, loyalty, honor. A legacy written in blood… Scotland, where freedom hangs in the balance… A warrior, destined to lead his clan into the future… And the woman, who conquers fear and betrayal to love him. Clan Fraser. Where it all began.
A code that echoes down through history. Scotland, in the year 1214. The Scottish king is dead , the wolves gather, and an attack on the powerful Fraser Clan changes the course of history. Was it the English who have long desired to bring Scotland to heel, destroy the power of the clans, and enslave its people? Or an enemy within?
The new king is crowned at Edinburgh, but enemies surround him. Will he be strong enough to stand against England, or doomed to fail and send his kingdom and his country down a dark and dangerous path? James Fraser, known as the Fox, by the hand of fate is the new chieftain of Clan Fraser. The clans gather at Edinburgh to pledge their loyalty to the new king, but James' path has always been loyalty to his country, not to an overlord. As the other clans pledge to the young king, James pledges his loyalty where his heart lies, to Scotland, setting in motion a conflict where enemies are made, blood will flow.
Brynna, the young widow of James' brother, who is killed in an attack on the clan, wants only to return to her own family after a cruel and abusive marriage. Now the ambitions of others force her into another unwanted marriage with the new chieftain of Clan Fraser. Cruelly treated by her first husband, she becomes an unwitting pawn in the struggle for power over the clan. Strong, unbroken, she must find the courage to confront an unknown enemy, and find love with the man who has sworn to protect her.
This was a good story but much too long for nothing. I'm a fast reader but this one took me a few days because I'd lose interest...all due to so much repetition. The spelling mistakes also didn't help. I usually don't let that bother me when it's an ARC but this isn't one and a good editor would have fixed all the errors before being published.
When James finds himself married to his brother's widow, Brynna, he soon learns how abusive his brother had been and it will take all his patience and gentleness to teach this new wife of his to trust him. Trust doesn't come easily, though, especially when violence, fighting and betrayal surrounds them. All James wants is peace and will do anything to protect his clan but someone is out there to make sure it doesn't happen!!
Make this story shorter by eliminating all the repetitiveness, fix all the spelling errors and give the hero his own original name....not use Jamie Fraser....and this could be an excellent story!
This story has potential it needs a good proofreading, some content editing, and maybe some trimming of all the filler. If I was reading a ARC I would have expected some of the problems…but not in a book published. There are an alarming amount of details that mirror OUTLANDER which I found offensive to the original book. Then to top it all off the story ends without the MCs getting a HEA, they never even utter words of love, smh. The story just ends like the author ran out of steam. I don’t know if I have it in me to read the next book of the series.
I really enjoyed this book, excellent descriptions of Scotland and great characters. BUT so many typos and really bad grammar also using "too" when it should be "to". Some sentences just don't make sense. This needs to be corrected. I would still read other books by this author however.
So many tales to be told of clans and fierce warriors, loyalty and love, the beauty of the Highlands and men wielding claymores. Yet the writer takes the same names as Diana Galbaldon uses in the Outlander series and does a lesser job at it. The only truly outstanding parts feature the younger brother and the perfidy of the cousin and BIL.
Finally, the repetition of passages, the misspelled words ... is it too much to ask that writers utilize the services of an editor?
I cannot recommend this book nor will I read the sequels.
I will leave the creative writing to the professionals and just say why I enjoyed this story and look forward to more. The author adds characters like strains of silk weaved into a tapestry of a family torn apart by betrayal and brutality. Then mended by the strength of duty, honor and love. I have turned the first page on the next story in this series and am already sweep back in time!
I enjoyed the story and the characters very much. Unfortunately, the lack of editing was awfully distracting. Misspellings, repetition of phrases, grammatical errors…the list goes on.
Really good story with history and adventure. Good read if you like mystery, murders and places you want to visit in Scotland. As a Frazer I enjoyed it
