Douglas Spitzer wants to be one of the “astronauts” selected for the crucial Mission Politzer. And just like astronauts like Buzz Aldrin and Sally Ride, Douglas is brave, adaptable, and self-sacrificing. He's one of the program's best candidates.
But if he qualifies, Douglas won't be traveling through space; he'll be launched into alternate realities on a desperate mission to save Earth from a horrific crisis that has our world on the brink of extinction. Unfortunately, it's a mission where everything will go wrong, where Doug-las's training and very humanity will be put to the test, and where a deep-seeded secret could sabotage everything.
Writer James Patrick (KAIJU SCORE, THE DRAGON INCIDENT) and artist Rubine (SEARCH FOR HU) lead us on a perilous undertaking to save the planet from total destruction!
This immediately called out to me because of the cover art, but I did feel like the actual art in the issue left something to be desired. I liked the premise and concept of astronauts from a dying planet needing to jump realities in order to save their world, but I do feel like this excellent premise didn’t exactly take off and grab ahold of me in this first issue. While I do think what happened in this first instalment was interesting and it was only the very beginning of this story, I do feel like this first issue was very surface level and bare bones (especially the social commentary), though that could easily change as the story continues and we get more time with these characters and this world. I do hope they breathe more life into this story by fleshing out the characters and the world.
I loved this! One scene got me thinking about how we had let trolls run rampant with fake news (i.e. "don't feed the trolls") and that maybe that wasn't the right move, because look what's happening now with a lot of people not able to distinguish what is fake from what is real. Maybe we should have been fighting them with facts all along.
Anyway, the comics' story line is not about fake news but it's reminiscent of a global crisis we're all facing. Can't wait for the next issue, I hope Filbar's, the shop that I bought the first issue from, continues selling the series here!
Keeps you Curious and Engaged! However, the ending of the series was corny and disappointing since the series is so riveting overall. This prevents a 5 star rating, and honestly ruined it for me.
Fine enough start. Like some of the art and the mission seems like it’ll be interesting, but the social commentary was a bit eye-rolling and has absolutely nothing new to say.
