Unquiet Mind #1

Echoes of Silence

Rate this book
People make love seem complicated. Intricate. Novels try to capture its intensity; music tries to rein in its soul.
I’ve read every novel I could. I’ve lived and breathed every song that I could listen to. The sounds fill my unquiet mind.
Then he came.
Killian.
He brought with him the beauty of silence that echoes through my soul and showed me love isn’t complicated. It’s simple. Beautiful.
Some say love at first sight doesn’t exist, that you can’t find your soul mate at sixteen years old. Those are people rooted in reality, chained to the confines of life that dictates how you are meant to think. Killian broke those chains. He broke everything, shattered it so I can see that reality is overrated, that daydreams can somehow come to life.
My life tumbled into darkness in the time after I met him, so dark I’m not sure I’ll ever see the light again. But he is always at my side. His life means he knows how to navigate the dark and he can lead me out.
I wade through the darkness with him at my side.
We’ll be together forever; I’m certain of that.
Until I’m not.

Note: This is book one of two. Killian and Lexie's story does not end here and will be continued in a following book.

Too long, too slow, too sweet for me... DNF @ 60%.

description

This is a well written story that I grabbed from Kindle Unlimited. It’s really long and simply taking me forever to get through. Perhaps it’s because I had one foot in and one foot out on my commitment level? It seems to be a young spin off from the adults in a prior series which I didn’t read and perhaps I should have?

The heroine is a sixteen year old high school student who is new to town and starts a band with a great group of guy friends and her fall for a hot young biker who is seventeen named Killian.

”…I knew I’d fallen into something special. It didn’t matter we were both in high school, and you weren’t meant to find such things at this age. That most people would brush off such notions on account of my age and inexperience. None of it mattered. Not when I just knew.”

The story so far is full of high school days. Lexi’s fall for Killian is well paced as the story stays young even on the edge of his biker world. The heroine is adorable and tough and the hero says all sorts of swoon worthy things.

”Gonna go to sleep hearing your beautiful voice in my ear, Freckles,” he whispered, bringing me back into the moment, “like I do every night.”

The swoon isn’t enough to keep me invested. Cutting the story down and adding some drama before I reached the sixty percent mark probably could have kept me more invested. Hope it's a winner for you because I did like the author's writing style.

★Review★

Ok, so those who know me no I do not do cliffhangers. And I do not usually do YA/NA. Not my thing.

In actual fact, I do really avoid cliffhangers, and well, if I get hit unexpectedly with a cliffhanger.............

Yes, it is fair to say, I do not like them.

And I KNEW going into this it was going to be a cliffhanger. However, I have been informed the 2nd book should be out next month.

Anyway......moving on!

I have been a huge fan of this author since she very first contacted me to read her first book and the first book in the Sons of Templar's series.

And ever since I read Out of the Ashes (Sons of Templar MC #3) by Anne Malcom which is the story of Bull and Mia, and we had the lovely secondary romance of Lexie and Killian, then we knew in that book, that it all fell apart for our young couple, I have been patiently waiting (**snorts**) for their promised story.

And I loved it. It delivered. It follows along the same timeline, obviously as Out of the Ashes. So there is of course some scenes re told, but from Lexie's POV. But that is okay, as I knew that would have to happen. And it was a fresh view point.

I loved Lexie and Killian. Killian was a great hero. How much he felt for Lexie. How he was for her, and in the end, how he let her go, how he destroyed himself, so she could fly. He loved her so completely.

And I enjoyed Lexie as a character, yes she was a teenage girl, but actually, she was pretty awesome. Again enjoyed the relationship she had with her mom, as I did in her Moms book. And I loved the little snippets with Lexie and Zane, and how she came to see Zane as her dad.

Overall, it was everything I wanted and more from Lexie and Killian's story. Loved Lexie's boys also. Her band.

If I had one tiny complaint it is that towards the end it felt rushed. It ran along the same timeline as Out of the Ashes, so most of the story was up until her Mom got kidnapped and saved, then it jumps forward 6 months and another 6 months. It is a whole year of relationship we miss out on, to get to the heartbreaking part. Or maybe I was just greedy for more of Awesome Boyfriend Killian.

But, it was still an awesome, so much more than I needed 5 stars. Cannot wait for the conclusion to their story.

It's finally time to take you all on Killian and Lexie's journey! I know some of you have been waiting for this one and it's a story that I'd written in my head before I even finished Out of the Ashes.
I hope you fall in love with them like I have.

A warning. This is book one of TWO. Yes it means the dreaded...cliffhanger. Don't light your pitchforks just yet, I promise book two will be hot on the heels of this one and you won't be waiting too long. I'll have dates for you coming soon. For now, Echoes is coming at you on July 19th

Let me help you out right now, don’t even bother reading this review go right now and buy this book. Done I don’t need to say anything else you won’t regret it, yes you will cry, yes you will smile and laugh, and yes the ending will rip your heart out and yet if you are still reading this review you really don’t need to, just buy the book. If you know anything about me you know I have been waiting for Killian and Lexie’s book since I first read about them, I fell in love with them, I knew they were special and that their story would be that of fairy tales, and I wasn’t wrong. Anne Malcom has out done herself and when I say that I mean she has amazed me with this book. It’s a book that will stay with you, it’s a book that could have the power to bring you to tears even after you have finished it, and it’s a book that could definitely ruin books after it.

Lexi and Killian met at the mechanic shop that the MC Zane was a member with. Right away Lexi felt a connection to him like she never had before. The more they saw each other the more they fell in love and became a part of each others lives growing together and learning so much together about themselves and about life. While at the same time Killian was working toward the only goal he had before he had met Lexie, to be a part of the MC he loved and the one his father loved before he passed away. But with Lexie being in his life Killian found new happiness he never knew possible.

Lexie found friends and an outlet for her passion and made a band. The band grew more than anyone could ever imagine but through everything there was Killian and Lexie. Though hard and happy their love grew and grew. But just when they thought they would finally have all of their dreams they both found out the hard way that dream can break just as easily as they can grow, and sometimes you can make the biggest mistake of your life and not get a second chance.

I literally loved every minute of this book. This book is one you don’t want to put down; in fact it’s a book you do everything you can to not have to put it down. Had I not been busy picking up children and cooking dinner I would have read this book in one sitting. This book is a beautiful peace of art, and I can guarantee you will be left waiting for book two and not happy till you have while being a ball of nerves.

Killian was what dreams are made of, the thing he did for Lexie and said to her left me speechless and in awe. I loved him, period. Amazing doesn’t even begin to describe him. Lexie is it for him done no more, nothing else, he doesn’t even see anyone else after Lexie. Lexie is funny sarcastic, sweet and kind and just what Killian needs, she’s his soft place in a world that has only shown him hardship and pain. They bring out the best in each other and only want the other to be happy. As long as Killian and Lexie have each other then they are good.

I can’t tell you how much I want book two, and how hard waiting for book two will be. What normally would have turned me off Anne Malcom made into greatness and made it not only work but made it exceptional. I can’t wait for book two but at the same time I know I will be a mess reading it, I know it(meaning me) won’t be pretty reading book two and I can’t wait, I need their final chapter like I need air(ok maybe that’s a little over dramatic but I am feeling very emotional right not lol).

I can’t recommend this book enough, I truly hope everyone gets a chance to read this beautiful book and I hope they love it as much as me and find it as special as I do. Every once in awhile there are books that you envy others who haven't read it yet because they get the great opportunity to have this magic in their hands for the first time and experience something so special for the first time, and thats how I feel about this book. It's not just a story, this is words woven together with enchantment to make a beautiful, magical, and very unforgettable tale.

*Thank you Anne Malcom for this Beta/Arc read.

***THREE AND A HALF STARS***
YA is definitely not my cuppa, but I heard good things about this author and wanted to check out one of her stories. The writing was tight and the story telling was pretty good. I just don't enjoy the YA environment enough to keep reading more of this series. That's on me though, not the story.

Killian. He was a much different male heroine that I've ever come across in a long time. And 17 years old? That was pretty interesting to see him change and mature over the span of two years in this read. Normally, I'd bring up the female protagonist first, but Killian is who stood out for me. Not that I didn't like Lexcie or couldn't relate to her, I did. She was cool. I just found Killian's character more compelling and complex as he and Lexcie go through the throes of being a teenager, being insecure, making hard life decisions, and juggling love and friendship.

Over all though, I think this story has potential and isn't what I would classify into one book genre. It started off kind of YA but progressed into NA as the characters matured even further and had biker MC themes. Some of the content was pretty complicated and was kind of angsty in my opinion, which is something I tend to be on the fence about, but all in all it was not bad.
Can't wait to see how everything mends out in book 2.

Jesus bloody Christ this book was amazing.

Killian. Omfg. Killian. Ruined me. A fictional 17 year old character ruined me. I want him. And I feel dirty knowing I do!

Lexie and Killian are both older and wiser than their years, Souls mates...2 half's of a whole.

I'm actually having trouble stringing a sentence together but this is what this book has done to me!

And then the ending. Waaaaah I was actually angry at the injustice of it all. Yes it is not a happy ending but one that will (hopefully) get rectified in book 2! Which I hope is soon!

My advice...read....take in all the wordy goodness of this book, cause it is that good. It's not just good, it's indescribable!

Ugh, I so wanted to love this book…I was so convinced I would love it I saved it for when I was in a book funk. Unfortunately, it didn’t really work for me..although I might get back to it, as the writing is good, it’s just the flow of it and the content that I’m not that big of a fan of.

For one, it’s boring for a long time, especially in the beginning. And I know it’s not just me, because even those who rated it 4-5* thought it was boring in the first part.

I didn’t read the book about her mother, but I could see very clearly that it was written in such a way so as to make sure the timeline respects her book and it wasn’t always natural, imo.

One of the things I really disliked about it is that the heroine and her mother are almost cardboard copies of the Gilmore Girls. There are so many similarities, it’s mind boggling. Apart from their hair colour and the fact the heroine is a musician, there’s little else to differentiate them from the Gilmore girls:

- Mom who gets pregnant as a teenager? Check
- “Witty” banter to signify the very close relationship between mom and daughter? Check
- Daughter who is book-smart (much more than her mother) and with very high aspirations? Check
- Shy daughter who loves rules/more free-spirited mother? Check
- Excessive love of coffee by both mom and daughter? Check
- Movie nights with constant running commentary from the mother and daughter? Check
- Calling themselves the “Spencer girls”? Now that’s just pushing it…and, yes, a big fat Check.

I honestly could go on and on about the similarities between the Spencer’s and Gilmore’s. I don’t know if the author did this knowingly or not, but the 2 sets of mother and daughter are way too similar, imo.

This book also suffers from a bad case of eye-reading, which I’m not a big fan of, but I can never escape it in romances; there was just too much of it in this one!! Eyes that turn lazy (huh?), eye that are hard and soft at the same time, eyes that are soft/warm without being hard as well, blank eyes, eyes with violence behind them, eyes with tragedy behind them (Zane’s eyes in particular and the pain behind them were mentioned SO many times, I felt like stabbing them), undetermined feelings running behind eyes amok, liquid eyes, eyes that harden “just a touch” and I could go on and on. And on. I don’t know how heroines in romance books have this amazing knack for reading eyes, but I really think authors should try to explore more ways of conveying their characters’ emotions - maybe take a look around the skin surrounding the eyes? It tends to move in different ways, conveying different emotions, imo, a bit more accurately than the actual eyes.

Finally, there’s the heroine..which I’m still not sure if I like or not. Honestly, she’s just too perfect, cute, understanding, smart, beautiful…she doesn’t care about fashion like other teenage girls, she’s always known what she wants to look like. She doesn’t curse (well, until she starts). She’s not into boys and sex like other girls her age (ugh, how this annoys me - I’m sorry, but fuck. that. Am I supposed to think that these types of heroines are somehow better because they don’t seem to be affected by the same hormones as other teenagers?) - except, of course, when she meets the hero. She never judges anyone on first impressions/cliches- except she does, but a second later. And then the way she talks about those who are not as perfect, she has this very condescending way of expressing herself, that really made me dislike her at times.

The hero is ok, but I didn’t care that much about him…I really could’ve used his POV because I kind of forgot about him at times. Plus he too suffered from being perfect - super smart, barely goes to school and yet he knows everything about everything and he acted like he had the experience and patience of a 40-year old. It was very difficult for me to believe he was a teenager.

There were good parts, too though. It's safe, it's sweet, the hero is super nice and the heroine is not that bad (she just rubbed me the wrong way). I can definitely see why others would love it, but it wasn't for me.

First let me say I recommend every book in this series. With that said, you can read this one as a standalone. What some may not like about the book is that it is part 1 of a two part book. So yes, there is a cliff hanger there at the end but book two is expected out any day now. Fans of Kristen Ashley and lovers of romance without detailed eroticism will love it. There is more of a focus on the love and I loved that. It made my heart smile to see the love between Lexie and Killian.

We first met Lexie and Killian in book 2 of the series, Out of the Ashes. I don't usually like the YA/NA genre but this author writes in such a way that you forget these are actually young teenagers at the start of the story. Both Killian and Lexie are not your usual 16/17 year olds and are much more mature,. Killian acts much more mature than most 17 year olds but I guess his childhood/mom made him grow up quick. At 17 he's a man to hold onto. Even though they are very young, you feel that unique first love, true love feel.

It is really long. When I saw the length when I opened it, I thought oh my, but let me tell you I was so absorbed in the book that I wanted it to be actually longer. This author has shown such exceptional growth from the very first book. She writes the kind of love story that grabs your heart and makes you actually feel the characters' feelings. And it's not just the romantic partners, it's the deep relationships between mother/daughter, step-father/daughter, friends and other family. She writes the kind of family/friend relationships that we all dream of.

I am happy to say that I received a first draft Beta/ARC of this book from the author. even in the first draft, it was a 5 star read for me. Seldom do I read a book that the characters draw me in and make such an impact on my emotions. You will be missing a great love story if you don't one click this one and read it. I can't wait for the next one. It's going to be just as good.

8+ Amazing Stars for me.

I haven’t been drawn to rockstar romance for a few years, but I really liked Killian and Lexie in Out of the Ashes. The issue for me was that I came straight from that book which basically gave us the ending, so I was just waiting around for everyone to catch up. I get why she did it, because if someone started this series without all that history, they’d be lost… but made for a boring read for me. IMO, it would have flowed better to put their book within the Sons of Templar umbrella, but then it would’ve been tough to connect with the band.

Regardless, we’re left with a more YA version (cuz they’re in HS) retelling of Out of the Ashes with some HS drama sprinkled in.

Bottom Line- I already knew how this was going to end, which made it a smidge 🥱🥱, but I think readers who don’t have their backstory would enjoy it more. I also wish the author would’ve come up with a better reason/explanation for the cliffy conflict because it’s unbelievable.

This book killed me!!!

I loved everything about Killian and his Freckles.

Lexie had me cracking up and looking crazy this whole book. She was sweet, funny, and full of sass. and she loved with her whole dang heart.

Killian just may be my favorite heros of Annes. He was so loving, sweet, and protective. From the start, it was all about lexie and there was no stopping the love that was gonna grow.

I loved how this book flowed perfectly with the past ones but also worked great as an intro to a new book without feeling a shift. It was pretty seamless.

Now what I didn't like....

I didn't like the repeat...some of the stuff you got a glimpse of in the previous book so I felt like I was re reading that one at times. Also the ending gutted me! I knew it needed to happen but man did it kill me.

I am counting down the days for the next book that's for sure

Enjoyable

Really digging the storyline.... Kind of slow but once you get into it, it takes off. Really love Lexi's character. She has an amazing relationship with her Momma. I really like Mia's parenting she rocks it.
I'm really loving that story is part Rocker and MC best of both worlds for this lover of both genres. Now onto the conclusion to Killian and Lexi's story.
Oh and the selflessness that Killian did for Lexi has broken my heart. Sometimes for someone to fly high you've got to let them go......
I recommend this book.

I received an ebook of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Anne Malcom!

I cannot even begin to explain how connected I felt to this book. Not because I'm crazy similar to the main character, because I'm not except for killer music taste and being a book worm, but Malcom was able to capture me with her story. Every emotion Lexie was feeling, I was feeling; every heartache, joyous occasion, betrayal, I was feeling right along with her. I was feeling the emotions to the point where I cried with the main character - yup you read right. I don't cry often - in fact it's quite rare that a book will make me cry - but this book did.

So much happened in this book. There is so much anticipation before something happens that you feel your heart racing and palpitating. As you read the words, your heart skips beats, and your breathing quickens, or even stops all together. This is why Malcom is one of my favourite authors.

I love how although this book features the MC, it's not ABOUT the MC. Yes they are present and important to the story, but the focus remains on Lexie and the people around her. The focus remains on the music and her relationships.

Also, this book REALLY makes me want to sing. Or maybe it's the fact that I've listened to Alice Kristiansen for two days straight...

Thank the Lord I have book two on my kindle ready to go.

We met these characters in Out of Ashes and I couldn't wait for more of them. I snapped up this book as soon as I realised it was out. Lexie and Killian share the kind of love story that people dream about. Theirs is a story that makes you believe in love. Beautiful dialogue, real character growth and a genuinely sweet story about characters you will grow to genuinely care about.

It was so nice to read this story from Lex's point of view. I fell for Killian immediately in Bull's book, but he cemented himself in my heart in this one. Amazing characters, with lots of Gilmore Girls banter. I am starting the next one immediately! And Darryl would totally win, even though I am a huge Glenn fan!!

This book was exactly the read I needed right now.

I actually picked this book up after seeing the authors TikTok about it. I’ve only read one other book by Anne Malcom, which I also loved, but was very different from Echoes of Silence. I decided to pick this book up to try and switch up genres and to get me out of my month long reading slump, and boy am I glad that I did.

“I didn’t forget about books the same way I didn’t forget about oxygen. They were necessary to my survival. That and music.”

I absolutely loved Killian and Lexie. Even being so young these two had a connection like no other. Like she says in the book they are each other’s person, and this is very evident in their journey.

This book starts off super sweet. Lexie is not the type of character I usually read about, seeing as I don’t usually connect with the sunshine, happy, and innocent type of characters, but I couldn’t help but to love her and her development as the story unfolds changes her and you get to see her grow up.

You see the transition from her being that sweet innocent teenager, into seeing her experience the horrors and heartbreak that the world holds and the destruction of that innocence when the truth of the world is revealed. But you also see her first experience with love, and some truly amazing friendships.

“I wanted the fairy tale. I wanted a love as deep as the ocean, as unyielding as the wind, stronger than diamonds, and as unpredictable as a volcano. I wanted a love that made me crazy and sane at the same time. The feeling that the world slipped into place the moment you laid eyes on that person. Your person. The one meant for you.”

I really loved Anne Malcoms writing. It is beautiful and almost lyrical in a way. I loved the characters, and the family dynamics. The MC and Lexie and her mom’s connection to them. All of the characters and the relationships in this book were so special.

This is not a standalone, Lexie and Killian’s story concludes in ‘The Skeletons of Us’, which I’ve already dived into.

“But surprisingly, right there in his arms, feeling safer than I ever had in my life, I fell. Fell right into the depths of Killian. Down a rabbit hole I hoped never to return from.”

If you need something to switch up the genres you are reading, or just love a beautiful tale of love, heartbreak, and growing up, i highly recommend Echoes of Silence.

Disappointed

This was very disappointing, a great deal of the book was a recap of Out of the Ashes. There were a few new things but to me not much. I hate the H that thinks they know what’s best for their h and it really isn’t. All the self sacrificing is always for nothing.

The author told us this was part one of two, she said Kill & Lex's story isn't over.
I saw it coming, I knew this would happen but I kept right on reading knowing I was going to yell at the author by the end of the book and now I sit her wondering how soon I can get my hands on book two.

Lexie & Killian, their soulmates. Made specifically for each other. Finding each other when your 16 years old may seem impossible but it's truly magical.
Both have experienced loss and pain, Killian more so. But Lexie is just what he needs to keep his demons at bay.
And Killian is the other part of her soul, her person, the one thing she never wants to live without.
After two years together things begin to change. Killian gets his dream, well second to finding the love of his life, and Lexie gets hers. But when one person is rooted in place and the other has been given the chance to fly where does that leave them?

Someone makes the ultimate sacrifice and it's absolutely heart breaking.

As I said, I knew this was coming, but I still wasn't prepared for the story to end where it did.
Echoes of Silence is my first Anne Malcom book, I see now what I've been missing and have added her previous Sons of Templar books to my TBR.

I loved loved loved this book I'm such a huge Anne Malcom fan after reading out of the ashes I could not wait to read Killian and Lexie's. Then thing I really love about this authors books is she has really unique characters were you fell everything that they are going threw you as a reader fell their happy , heartbreaking, angry moments. I fell in love with these two they seem like such a unlikely couple but fit so well . Was so happy that she wrote it this way that way you could see what the Lexie was going through during the out of the ashes book . I can't wait to read more from this author she is extremely talented you don't want toe miss out on them I would suggest you read her sons of Templar series before this you would be so much more enjoyable if you do .

2 stars because there is nothing new to read, everything that happens in this book happened in book 3 only now we get it from the point of view of the daughter.
I know its a popular way of writing and selling books after the whole FoS concept, how to sell more books, take an original storyline and just change the POV. Im not a fan of these type of books.

Its not badly written, I just was waiting for new development and not something I already read about. I made me skim a lot. Book 2 will probably be better for me.

Echoes of Silence

Dear God.... Killian is everything I ever needed in my life! I’ve read all the Sons and Greenstone books, so I already knew a lot about Lexie and Killian’s story, but I had no idea Killian would be as perfect as he is. He is sooooo dreamy! I can’t wait to find out what happens next for him and Lexie!

5 BEAUTIFULLY FELT STARS!! OMG....Killian and Lexie's story reached in and touched my heart in so many ways. I am so invested in their story it feels real to me, like I know them. Anne Malcom's words are gold, they a shiny and beautiful, I can't get enough of her words. I can't wait to read Skeletons of Us the second book.

4.5 Forever Stars! Hooked from the beginning to end. Lillian and Freckles’s story is a slow burn that is endearing with the typical alphaness in an MC. Young love with chemistry and angst. Definitely diving into to book 2.

I'm doing a re read of this series and I realised I didn't write a review, bad reader.

This is the first of two books so yes it's a cliffhanger but don't let that deter you because the pain is worth it. I loved the mix of YA, bikers and fledgling rock stars. The author managed to integrate all the aspects of the story seamlessly. Killian and Lexie's story spans two years and as you can imagine there is lots of angst. Love all the other characters who are central to the story.

Dnf @ 51%, think I would enjoy this more if I went back to it another time. Also got very repetitive after just having read the monther’s book before this.
