Jumps Are More Dangerous Than They Realized

Returning to Sol System was supposed to be a joyous occasion, but Janlin and the crew of the Jumpship Hope find nothing but trouble on their arrival. The biological nanites they depend on are failing, and a divide grows as the orbital colony argues over how to handle the problem, with Janlin and Gordon squarely at odds.

Diona Jordan, leader of the Mars Colony, is investigating a different way to handle the failing nanites. But her dangerous methods threaten to create an uncontrollable menace.

As discord spreads through the Orbitals, Mars, and even Earth, Janlin struggles to help all the people who need her as it becomes clear that Mars holds the key to everything. Janlin could never betray her friends… but that’s exactly what she’ll have to do to save them.

Interesting, with qualifications. I feel there are too many memes involved, the author is going big on contemporary sci-fi memes. There is the jump technology for faster than light travel, which by itself would be sufficient. Yet there are a myriad of other technologies, like nano scale computers enhancing life functions, and along with aliens which also use a similar technique. Then there is AI. There are various communication technologies, some of which appear to be FTL as well (not mentioned specifically, but there was no delay on Earth area to Mars). Well, there were also memes associated with the various tech, including climate change, pollution, pandemics, and more. Of course, there is also human nature (if indeed the interpersonal issues are natural). Well, since the story is interesting, I will probably go on with the series. Hopefully, it will not be as depressing as this episode.

I love this cover!
Book t wo, sequel to Jumpship Hope. While the immediate problem of food is partly solved, others quickly take their place: nanite bio-fouling, PTSD and a new villain in the from of Stepper's older sister Diona. Short chapters helped draw me through the story. Looking forward to book three!
