'Transformative... Flip Thinking beautifully illustrates how a person who can turn a negative into a positive can never be defeated' - Greg McKeown, podcaster and bestselling author of Essentialism and EffortlessImagine you've got a great idea, and all you hear are the yes-buts. "Yes, but that's been tried before, and it didn't work." "Yes, but shouldn't we just let it sit for a while?" "Yes, but what if it doesn't work..."Stop saying "yes, but..." to life, and to start saying "yes, and..."This international bestseller introduces the power of flip thinking to transform stuck-in-the-mud, pessimistic 'yes, but' thinking into an inventive, curious 'yes, and' mindset.Berthold Gunster presents his fifteen flip thinking strategies that will transform your thinking away from limitations and threats and towards possibilities and opportunities. From disrupting (turn all the rules upside down), to flaunting (play up what you want to hide), and importing (get the enemy on board) to amplifying (focus on what works, and do more of that) Gunster's strategies and stories will have you approaching even the most challenging problems, at work, home and at play, in a whole new way.

"Flip Thinking: The Life-Changing Art of Turning Problems into Opportunities" describes the ways in which we can be stuck in our everyday routines and suggests ways in which we can turn our "yes, but" into "yes, and". Berthold Gunster outlines 15 ways to alter their thinking to make the best of things, perhaps making lemons out of lemonade, instead of being "stuck in the mud".
I thought this was an interesting book and possessed some great reminders for me to reevaluate the ways in which I think about things in my life. I tend to be someone who follows the rules, can be rigid in the ways that I think about things, and can definitely admit that I can be a control freak. I have two little kids, and of course, nothing goes according to plan when it concerns them. Life would be a whole lot easier if I didn't get as aggravated having an idea of how things should be, and then being disappointed if it doesn't go according to plan. I plan to take the concepts outlined in the book and try to apply them to my everyday life.
Nothing in this book is necessarily revolutionary or novel by any means. These are all things that we have learned or heard at some point in our lives but maybe haven't used. Again, this book isn't moving mountains, but instead guiding its reader in the right direction to ease and potentially great opportunities.
I really enjoyed parts of this book and then other parts, not so much. I think the part 1 of the book is great. It presents some ideas in some really key ways which I found original and well-explained. Perhaps even more helpful, Part 1 gives some helpful steps to think about 'problems' and how to break them down.
As we get to part 2, the book moves towards the 12 strategies of 'flip-thinking'. Some of these were helpful, although I found this section repetitive and some of the different strategies seemed overly similar. I was particularly disappointed in this section as it went down the well-trodden path of finding random anecdotes and stories (and many of them rinsed and repeated in similar books) to back up whatever strategy the author wanted to put forward. I would have actually been fine with the author just presenting the strategies. Instead by putting it as 'the strategy' that company X used to get out of Y problem, it just seemed to cheapen the ideas presented.
Overall, I'd encourage reading for Part 1 alone. Part 2 can be skimmed and the back of the book (Part 3 - 'in short') provides a helpful summary of the ideas in Part 2.
Flip Thinking: The Life-Changing Art of Turning Problems into Opportunities by Berthold Gunster is like a self-help book functioning as an efficacious diagram of stratagems. When perusing an Internom pop-up shop, I decide to buy then read the text due to a branching curiosity of the title: what is flip-thinking? The text is full of mainly qualitative data aggregating practically guiding (with immediately applicable methodologies) toward mindfully achieving a/ desirous outcome(s). I find the text offers valuable contributions that may bolster aspects of one's life (inclusive of what may be in connection with one's life). I find the font of the text easy to read. The text offers many references. Even so, I think the following texts may prove to be good supplemental texts to read to further deliberate concepts within Flip Thinking: The Life-Changing Art of Turning Problems into Opportunities by Berthold Gunster: The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle, The MindBody Code: How to Change the Beliefs That Limit Your Health, Longevity, and Success by Dr. Mario Martinez, It Didn't Start with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle by Mark Wolynn, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change by Stephen R. Covey, The Love Prescription: Seven Days to More Intimacy, Connection, and Joy by Dr. John Gottman, PhD, and Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, PhD, Positive Discipline: The Classic Guide to Helping Children Develop Self-Discipline, Responsibility, Cooperation, and Problem-Solving Skills by Dr. Jane Nelsen, Ed.D., Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell, Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ by Daniel Goleman, The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives by Dr. William Stixrud, PhD, and Ned Johnson, Mastery by Robert Greene, Not In Your Genes: The real reasons children are like their parents by Oliver James, Sam Walton: Made in America by Sam Walton, How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie, Working with Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, and Sparks of Genius: The 13 Thinking Tools of the World's Most Creative People by Robert and Michèle Root-Bernstein.

Flip thinking is a mindset that encourages us to view problems as opportunities for growth, learning, or experimentation. This approach is based on the idea that we can reframe problems as opportunities and find creative solutions by looking at them from a different perspective. Ebury Edge's book, "Flip Thinking: The Life-Changing Art of Turning Problems into Opportunities," is divided into three sections. The first part, "The Luggage," discusses virtues like acceptance and observation, while the second part, "Flipping the Problem," focuses on looking at problems from a different perspective and considering fresh ideas. The third step, "Transforming the Problem," involves exploring innovative solutions and creative ideas. By adopting this approach, we can generate new and practical solutions that may not have been evident earlier. Establishing a flip thinking mindset requires practice but with commitment and time, it can become a natural part of our problem-solving approach.
That feeling when you touch and read a book, the freedom to use highlighters, mark your thoughts, and engage with each page gives a sense of true connection. As I flip through the pages of Flip thinking, there's a renewed sense of blossoming within. What a thoughtful gesture from a beautiful soul, I truly admire the intention behind this gift.
Each book is unique in its own way, and the best part of this one is the concept of compartmentalisation. The first part, The Luggage, offers clarity on essential facts. The second part, The Journey, outlines 15 strategies of flip thinking. Finally, the book concludes with a strategically aligned summary of all 15 strategies, enhancing understanding and practical application.
I liked the idea of Flip Thinking and the use of improvisation. But please, please, please do not repeat everything hundreds of times. We, readers, are not fools. Repetitions would really be exhausting and could kill the excitement of the idea. This is the main problem in most self-help books. Writers think they are dealing with some idiots and should write anything more than ten times. For God's sake...
I think I've heard the themes and some of the examples before. The author is inspired by Improv techniques. I have a friend who also writes on the subject, but is different enough to still make some of the strategies useful. There are sections of this book that were genuinely really good, but a few that I wanted to just skim through.
I think this is a good book to read to become aware of how one can leverage limitations and weaknesses in new ways.
I liked very much the idea behind the book - which focuses a lot on improvisation and seeing things from a different perspective. But, I found it quite repetitive and it was exhausting to read the same ideas on repeat, together with many stolen, inspired thoughts - it quite killed the excitement of the ideas and of the book itself.
A book of practical wisdom gained through the author's experience. After reading, I am sure that reader's perspective will totally change about problem solving. In principle, it's simple: you can solve a problem, let it go or flip-think it !
Given the info here and the author's rep, this will sell well. This has some excellent approaches that will be very effective for readers. Recommended.
very good book about how to think and handle problems in our life. The book is written in a unique way that resembles How to win friends and influence people, How to stop worrying and start living and concepts in behavioural economics
Reading personal development books is easy, but applying them is never as simple. However, this book offers very easy-to-apply strategies from the very beginning, and the examples it provides are fun. I absolutely loved the summary section at the end of the book and the detailed book list.
It's a good book with some useful insights. It doesn't give you any routine or workbook to follow unlike other popular self-help books. And that's the whole point. It's your thought process and approach to matters that the book will help with.
The main concept of this book is turning problems into opportunities which can be done with 15 different strategies. Those strategies are defined in 4 different categories (love, work, battle and play).
I didn’t find those strategies to be very unfamiliar or new. Every strategy came with some practical examples which were enjoyable to read, but sometimes a little obsolete. In the last chapter, an example was used of a student who “flip thought” her problem of having a long commute by being forced to study on the train. This made her able to complete all her assignments.
This book can help you to rethink some situations and problems. Sometimes it can be a bit vague on HOW and WHEN to use which strategy. First, the book tells you how you must let go and accept, and later tells you to persevere.
Anyway, despite the lack of new insights and the dissonance in statements it’s enjoyable and easy to read. Therefore 4 stars.
This book is a great collection of well known thinking methods. It provided me with fresh examples of how to apply methods, which continue to inspire my openness to finding creative approaches to thought obstacles.
