Drugs have always been present in our society, unfortunately. They reel young people in and ruin a lot of lives. Not only those of the users, but also those of family and friends who see their loved ones getting dragged in deeper and deeper. Some can climb out of that hell. Others, sadly enough, are doomed. ☹

How can this be stopped? The police does their utter best to pick up dealers, but often it are only small fishes they are able to catch. The big ones are somewhere safe, far from the action, counting their money.

Will we ever be able to have a clean world? I am afraid not. As long as there is a demand, there will be people willing to sell and invent kinds that are maybe even more addictive and thus attracting more buyers.

I hope, from the bottom of my heart, that parents, teachers, … can prevent youngsters from falling in to the dealers’ traps.

Field analyst Cath is the first to realise something is wrong when more deaths among the drug addicts are registered. A bad batch? That is her first thought, but it seems like a new drug is the core ingredient of this book.

Detective Draker and his partner have a lot on their plate. A missing informant, a drugs smuggling police official, a murder case. And on top of this ‘Sky White’ is become a big problem. Draker can use all the help he can get to solve all these cases.

As the net is closing around the baddies, they are getting desperate. And desperate times call for desperate measures…

A very enjoyable book with some interesting twists along the way. 4 stars

There is a new form of cocaine on the streets of Blackpool all the way from India, and the addicts are lining up to give it a try, but although the big hit Sky White provides is tempting, it also has some nasty side effects - and it could be lethal.

The sudden rise in addict deaths attracts the notice of police field analyst, and ex-investigative journalist, Cath Moore. She heads to Blackpool to investigate whether there is a bad batch of something nasty out there, and what she discovers has her very worried indeed.

Meanwhile, Moore's new romantic interest DS Martin Draker, of the Northwest's Regional Organised Crime unit, has his hands full investigating the claims of an informant that a corrupt police official is involved in importing a new drug from India. When the informant goes missing, seemingly at the instigation of a nasty character who has crossed Draker's path before, one Dan 'The Man' Manning, he is determined to bring the guilty parties to justice - despite being warned off.

Moore puts out a TV appeal warning of the dangers of Sky White, and she and Draker begin to realise that their cases are closely connected. Unfortunately, this also puts them both in the sights of a very incensed Manning, who will not brook any interference in his plans to make a fortune from the drug. Can they catch him before more bodies start piling up?

Having thoroughly enjoyed The Badge and The Pen books from Roger A. Price, I could not wait to get stuck into his new police procedural series, and it was everything I was hoping for. Inside Threat introduces a new pairing of compelling characters, with echoes of the police-journalist vibe from Price's previous trilogy, but this time the central protagonists both work under the auspices of the police force - one serving copper in DS Draker, and one police analyst, Cath Moore.

Price kicks off the story with a seriously disturbing prologue that introduces you to the risks of taking Sky White in gut-wrenching detail. He then sets Draker and Moore off on the threads of their seemingly separate twisty investigations, travelling from pillar to post in north-west England (and occasionally to India), and delving into knotty policing issues on one side and the dark underbelly of Blackpool the tourists do not see on the other. As it begins to become clear that their cases cross over, there is a lovely build of suspense before Draker and Moore realise this themselves. Once their plotlines collide, Price has a ball ramping up the danger, intrigue, and menace, as the unpleasant characters who plan to make their fortunes from Sky White take umbrage at Draker and Moore's involvement - especially since Manning already has an axe to grind with Draker. As the situation spirals out of control, Price uses the themes of greed, corruption, double-dealing and revenge to keep you on the edge of your seat, before flooring you with a divine little surprise that I did not see coming. Well played, Roger!

As is Price's forte, the wealth of knowledge he has under his belt from his own years on the force lends this book a solid air of authenticity. There is oodles of gritty drama to keep you turning the pages, but I love how he takes you through the procedures too, ensuring you are fully versed in how the police make sure their investigations get the best chance of a successful prosecution. I very much enjoyed the insight Price gives in this story about how the police force not only gather information through the use of informants, but by using field analysts to examine the mass of data that comes their way from Moore's part of the tale, which I have not previously read about. And the glimpse at what happens when a new drug is identified and incorporated into the Dangerous Drugs Act is fascinating.

This is an excellent first instalment in the DS Martin Draker series. Perfectly paced, slickly conceived, and nicely balanced between the parts played by Draker and Moore, with a clever bit of word play in the title. I absorbed this in a single, highly enjoyable sitting, and am already looking forward to the next one!

A confidential informant tells DCI Colin Carstairs and DS Martin Draker of the Northwest's Regional Organised Crime Unit that a police detective and a senior civilian officer are involved in the importation of heroin from India. The informant is a relative of one of the crooks so the intelligence ought to be good only when the Indian police conduct a surveillance operation at their airport, a bag swap indicates the money has changed hands but the suspect appears to have an empty case. No one realises the new product is very cleverly concealed but the man is worried, and annoyed that he is taking more of a risk than his partners. Carstairs and Draker are soon involved in the plan to prevent a cash van heist by a gang involving a man they already want for murder but again it goes wrong, and another robbery takes place. Alarmingly, when the burnt-out getaway car is found, there is also an unidentified body in the boot and a cryptic note alluding to the death of an informant. Meanwhile Martin’s girlfriend, a police field intelligence analyst called Cath Moore, is investigating the dramatic rise in deaths in Blackpool from a new synthetic type of cocaine called Sky White, where the victims meet a truly horrible end. Her attempts to warn the public enrage the dealer and place her firmly in danger from him. Will the pair of detectives join all the dots and find the mastermind behind these crimes before anyone else gets hurt?
This is a smashing police procedural full of twists and unexpected turns written by an author who really knows his stuff! Colin and Martin make a fantastic partnership and Cath is an intelligent and useful addition, even if she is somewhat reckless with her own safety at times. Even the chief constable is a great guy! The plot is clever and complex and the suspense is kept up throughout. I hope there will be more stories featuring this very likable set of characters. 5*

What a treat it is to learn that Roger A. Price ( HIDDEN, VENGEANCE, BY THEIR RULES et al) is back with a brand new series and lead detective, DS Martin Draker, from the Northwest’s Regional Organised Crime unit. Not least because Roger has included not one, but two characters called Gary in his latest thriller. As a member of a shrinking tribe, I appreciate it!

INSIDE THREAT, book one of four in the pipeline, follows DS Draker’s investigation of a tip off that a corrupt police official is importing heroin from India. The plot thickens for Draker when the informant goes missing, presumed dead, coinciding with a local spike in fatalities linked to a new form of synthetic cocaine, dubbed Sky White. Cath, police field analyst and Draker’s romantic partner, is determined to warn the public about the dangers and help Draker root out the criminals responsible. Dan Manning, the gangster behind the poison, will only sit idly by for so long as Draker’s investigation into the Indian drug connection and Cath’s publicity stunt threaten to strangle his new drug enterprise at birth.

Will Draker be smart, and lucky enough, to connect the pieces and crack the puzzle? Will he and Cath stay ahead of Manning long enough to protect the public and preserve their lives against an enemy without scruples? And who, or what, really is the inside threat that Draker and his team face? INSIDE THREAT delivers, this is the best police procedural thriller I have read this year. It’s tight, suspenseful, authentic crime writing that keeps us guessing and needing to read on. Delivered in Roger’s trademark jabbing chapters the pace is police-chase fast and the action is genuinely on point. Roger A. Price gives a back-stage pass to what it’s really like to fight organised crime, from a writer who has done it for real. Five stars from this Gary and I look forward to more.

My thoughts about Roger A Price’s police procedural thriller Inside Threat this insane murder mystery is full of unexpected twists and turns. This book will make your heart race with every passing scene. No matter how cynical you are about suspense thrillers, the end-twist in Roger A Price’s Inside Threat will leave you stunned to the core. The story of Roger A Price’s Inside Threat begins with An informant goes missing after disclosing to DS Martin Draker, of the Northwest’s Regional Organised Crime unit, that a corrupt police official is importing heroin from India.
Field analyst Cath, is investigating an upsurge in deaths caused by a new drug with similar effects to cocaine. A body, believed to be that of the missing informant, is discovered in a burned-out car, along with a note threatening further deaths if the police don’t back off. Cath launches a TV appeal warning of the dangers of Sky White. The gangster, Dan Manning, is incensed; she could kill the new drug’s market before it gets going. Before Manning has a chance to stop her, the police must catch him before the body count rises. Roger A Price’s Inside Threat is probably the most intriguing books I’ve read in recent times. This book blew my mind wide open. The deep storyline, crazy twists & unpredictable plot were just outstanding. You won’t see that end coming. If you are looking for a book that brings you to the edge of your seat with unpredictable storyline. Then go for this it won’t disappoint. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💥💥💥💥💥

Book 1 of a new series featuring DS Martin Draker who is working out of Preston Police Station along with his friend and colleague DCI Colin Carstairs. I really liked the three main protagonists in this book, their relationships were great - I’m looking forward to seeing more of them. Well written and a good storyline made this an easy and enjoyable read.

Briefly, an informant has provided information about a pending armed raid on a cash van. Acting on this they discover that this was a set up and the raiders attacked another van elsewhere. Did they have inside information? Then a body, believed to be the informant, is found along with a warning note. Meanwhile, drug addicts are dying in Blackpool from the use of an unknown drug imported from India and Cath, a Field Analyst and Martins girlfriend, is investigating. But when she goes on television warning about the lethal drug the drug dealers are enraged.

The two cases merge together in a high octane thriller involving corrupt insiders, a murderer on the run and the two detectives and Cath determined to bring everyone to justice. This is a brilliant start to a new series with some great twists and turns. Loved it.

When I read the blurb for this book it really got me interested in it but once I started reading it I really enjoyed it.
The book's author served with Lancashire Police, the Regional Crime Squad and the National Crime Squad, so when he writes a book about gangland crime and police procedurals he really does know what he is talking about.
For me personally, a thing that added an extra dimension was knowing the area where the book is located. There is a scene in Charnock Richard Service Station on the M6 and I could picture the car park mentioned and had a giggle about the bollards being down 🙂
The book is really well written with some great twists along the way and you get a good insight into the main characters. It is a very enjoyable read and I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys UK crime fiction.
This is the author's sixth book, but the first one in this series and I look forward to reading the other books in the series.
Many thanks to Dark Edge Press for providing me with an electronic advanced review copy on return for an honest, unbiased review.

I love being at the beginning of a new series & wondering what the characters will be like & where they will take me. DS Martin Draker is a great start.

An informant goes missing after disclosing information about a corrupt police official. A new drug is on the scene with horrific side effects &, in many cases, fatal.

That’s all I’m going to say. A heart-pumping read with some real toe-curling moments. The storyline is so unpredictable at times, I wasn’t sure what to think. One thing is for sure, read it & you won’t be disappointed.

This was picked up after listening to the author at Crime Central event in Manchester and hearing about his background and process.
Inside Threat is an excellent read, with a strong sense of location and relevance to the area. I can only imagine how much of this is actually based on fact but it feels like lots.
The cast of characters are fully realised and believable and I felt that it would transfer to the small screen as an ITV 3 partner (which I'd love to see!)
Can't wait for the follow up and will be hunting the back catalogue for more of the author's work.

Inside Threat is an excellent start to a new series!
This book has an intricate plot which grabbed my attention from the start and kept me intrigued throughout.
Dangerous drug dealers are not only targeting vulnerable addicts but are also willing to do anything to stop the police from hindering the sale of their synthetic cocaine substitute which is causing horrific side effects in those who use it.
Fast-paced, full of action, tension, and suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
The lead characters are all very likeable. I’m going to enjoy catching up with this team as the series progresses.
I very much recommend to all who love a good crime thriller.
Looking forward to book 2!

This is the first book in a new series by the author featuring DS Martin Draker. Martin works alongside his partner Colin and they make a great pairing. I loved the description that the author gives of these two. They are likened as Laurel and Hardy one slim and the other ex slim if I remember the wording correctly. It did make me chuckle.

One of my favourite characters was Cath. Cath is a field analyst who never seems to be far from trouble. She is in a relationship with Martin so have an understanding when it comes to each others jobs. In fact I enjoyed the relationships between both Cath and Martin and Martin’s working relationship with Colin. This really made the story even more appealing for me.

The storyline focuses on drugs. Not only has an informant go missing but there is a new drug doing the rounds which has horrific side effects that made me squirm! You just know there is going to be trouble when drugs are involved and Cath finds herself getting mixed up in it all in her fight to put a stop to these new drugs.

Inside Threat is a great start to a new series with very likeable protagonists. They’ve certainly ensured that I will be coming back for more. There was plenty going on to hold your interest with the pacing and tension ramping up the further into the story you get. There are are some hair raising moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Looking forward to the next in the series.

My thanks to Dark Edge Press for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

When DS Martin Draker and DCI Colin Carstaris are called to meet an informant they are instanlty interseted. This is made more interesting by the fact that the informant has intel that corrupt police staff are involved in importing drugs from India. As people start turning up dead from a suspected drugs overdose, it doesn't take Field Analyst and ex journo Cath to start investigating, causing ripples in the tide. When the informant is suspected to have been killed in a car fire, a note is dicovered threatening things could turn fatal if the police don't cese the invesitgation. After Cath goes on TV to make an appeal to the public to stop any more tragic deaths, Dan Manning, a gangster and leader of the gang at the head of the iportation scheme is rialled. Could the drugs deaths and Martin's invesitigations in to police corruption be linked? And is Cath's life in danger?

My goodneess what a brillaint story! I enjoed getting to know Martin, Colin and Cath, and they all have their part to play in this tale, and they play it very well indeed! Dan Manning a brilliant bad guy, so many layers to him, I look forward to future books to see what's in store next! this was a real page turner, I had to keep reading to see what was going to happen next! The plot was brilaint, everything was explained in such a way that I didn't feel lost, and was able to keep up with the storyline. A brilliant start to what I hope will be a hugely successful detective series! I can't wait for the next one!!

Inside Threat by Roger A. Price is a gripping and authentic crime thriller that plunges readers into the gritty world of police corruption, organised crime, and drug trafficking in Northwest England. Drawing from his own background as a Special Operations Detective Inspector, Price delivers a fast-paced narrative filled with tension, realism, and heart-pounding suspense. The novel follows Detective Sergeant Martin Draker, a seasoned officer known for bending the rules to get results, and Cath Moore, an intelligent former journalist turned police analyst. As they investigate a deadly new drug called Sky White and the brutal activities of criminal kingpin Dan Manning, the stakes escalate quickly. The disappearance of Draker’s informant, Abdul Bashir, and Manning’s escalating violence put both investigators in grave danger. Price weaves a complex plot involving an internal leak, heroin smuggling, and a cat-and-mouse chase that keeps readers on edge. What sets this novel apart is the authenticity in the police procedures and the moral ambiguity of the characters, especially Draker, who operates in the grey areas of justice. With sharp dialogue, realistic settings, and a chilling climax, Inside Threat is a standout in the crime thriller genre—perfect for fans of gritty British noir and high-stakes investigations.

Roger Price once again delivers a corker of a tale in his first in the series of DS Martin Drake crime stories. Martin and his partner, Colin, are tipped off about a dodgy cop who has links to drugs being brought in from India. Cath, Martin's romanic partner, works in the field and is he'll bent on stopping kids from dying due to dodgy drugs.
Throw in a crime boss with an agenda, the corrupt cop, and some fantastic relationships between Martin, Colin and Cath, and you're slap bang in the middle of a plot that takes you on a roller coaster ride of tension and drama. Would love to see this turned into a TV drama!

GREAT READ IN THIS GENRE

You can tell that Roger A. Price has been in the police by his no-nonsense approach to police procedural. Inside Threat is an engaging first book in the D.S. Martin Draker Series.

The book hooks you into the story right from the start. The characters are briefly drawn unencumbered by complicated backstories. Although I am hoping for a gradual reveal in further books.

The pace of the book moves the story along nicely and is brought to a satisfactory conclusion. I have no hesitation in recommending this book and I am looking forward to Book 2.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this first in a gripping new crime series featuring DS Martin Draker. Slick, smart and heartstoppingly suspenseful, this is Roger at his best with a genius twist that floored me! An absolute must-read for all crime fiction fans!

Good plot but poorly written

An intriguing plot and well drawn characters. However, Price’s English is poor. For example, he uses “elicit” when he means “illicit”, and “enquires” instead of “enquiries”. He misspells Indira Gandhi’s name. The punctuation is often poor.
