Have you ever read a book that you just couldn't get out of your head no matter how many days, weeks and months passed? This series is that for me. It's taboo, but no matter how many lines it crosses, you will not want to put it down. Started this journey first reading/listening to Balance and then couldn’t deal with the cliffhangers so I purchased the ebook collection and it was the best decision! As series will take you on emotional roller coaster that you don’t want to end!

Wow, this series is absolutely incredible. I was so completely consumed by Adrianna and Kova, I pretty much devoured this entire series in just a few days. And these books are not short! I don’t think I can pinpoint exactly what it is that had me so captivated but this forbidden age-gap romance about a gymnast and her coach was so addictive I couldn’t put it down.

Kova is the true definition of an anti-hero. There were times he acted like an total asshole and his decisions were questionable at best, but it became clear how deeply he cared for Adrianna. This is not a sugary sweet romance. Ria and Kova’s love story is raw and messy but also passionate and intense. The spicy scenes are hot AF but there is also so much raw emotion behind every moment with these two. To put it simply, Ria and Kova are pure fire, consuming and explosive and scorching hot.

I’ve always been a fan of watching gymnastics on TV so reading this series and getting an up close and personal look into the sport was really special. Following along with Adrianna’s journey was like routing for my favorite gymnast at the Olympics. It was really fun!

So far, I’ve absolutely loved everything I have read from this author. I’m enchanted by her writing and I know these characters will stay with me for a long time to come. I’m really hoping we get more from this world with a certain brother and bestie, fingers crossed!!

Amending to 5stars because you really don't have to agree with everything to acknowledge that this book was incredibly well done, and deserves a re-read.

This series is toxic. I loved every minute. Blame the Russian.

So here’s the thing:
I don’t like series.
I don’t like underage romance.
I don’t like cheating.
And I definitely don’t like my Kindle silently judging me for how long I’ve been reading without blinking.

And yet… I inhaled all five books of Off Balance in five days like they were contraband.
This series hijacked my final week of vacation, held me emotionally hostage, and sent me back to work altered. Not because it was bad. Because it was well written, psychologically addictive, and deeply uncomfortable in a way that wouldn’t let me go.

🚩 Yes, it’s problematic.

That’s not a typo. That’s the thesis.

She’s fifteen at the start.
He’s her coach.
The power imbalance is not subtle, symbolic, or debatable.
I knew. I was warned. I braced myself.
And I still got dragged under because Lucia Franco doesn’t write fluff. She writes obsession, conditioning, ambition, and emotional dependence with frightening precision.
I didn’t fall in love with this series.
It wore me down.

🧠 Adriana is a gremlin with Olympic goals.
At first, she isn’t the most gifted gymnast. She’s the most relentless. That’s what makes her dangerous and compelling. She treats her body like it’s disposable and her pain like background noise. Mentally, she’s made of steel shavings and spite.
Yes, she goes on to win medals. Yes, she becomes elite.
But what you’re watching is the cost.
The isolation.
The conditioning.
The trauma normalized as “mental toughness.”
Watching her sacrifice her body and sanity for greatness is brutal.
Watching the system reward that sacrifice is worse.
If ambition were a person, it would be her.
With shin splints.

❄️ Kova is Russian. Let’s not pretend that doesn’t matter.
Konstantin “Kova” Kournakova is the red flag.
The whole parade. No skipping bands.
He’s older. He’s roughly twice her age. He’s arrogant, controlled, emotionally rigid, and very much her coach. He’s also in a relationship at the start, because yes, this series is absolutely full of cheating and we’re not glossing over that.

He isn’t cold. He’s precise. Almost robotic. He passionately avoids contractions, and sounds like a machine learning human emotion in real time. Adriana even teases him about it, tells him he sounds like a robot and needs to speak like a person.
That makes him fascinating.
It does not make him safe.

The discipline. The authority. Coupled with the raw emotion pouring out of him that Ria drags out. The way he peppers Russian into his dialogue so often that I was basically taking an unpaid language course mid-chapter. Every time he said something commanding in that clipped, military precision, my brain short-circuited and I needed a moment.

That’s not praise.
That’s proof of how effective the writing is.

He doesn’t fall for Adriana just because she’s pretty. He falls for her because her obsession mirrors his. Because she’s malleable. Because she’s already conditioned to endure pain, isolation, and control.

That’s not romance.
That’s grooming.
The book frames it as obsessive devotion.
The structure reveals something much darker.

🔥 The romance is not soft. It’s sterile and feral.
This isn’t cute longing.
This isn’t playful tension.
This is fixation, denial, control, release, and emotional fallout stretched across five books. The chemistry is intense. The tension is relentless. The payoff is… a lot.

Read responsibly.
Not at work.
Not in public.
Not anywhere you’re expected to behave.

☠️ Final thoughts:
This remains an uncomfortable series.
The eventual age-up doesn’t fix it.
The waiting doesn’t fix it.
The restraint doesn’t fix it.
When you layer the power imbalance of coach and athlete on top of the psychological conditioning of elite gymnastics, Adriana was primed for this. The isolation, the trauma, the normalization of suffering all set the stage.
Even when the story wants you to root for it, you can’t unsee that this is grooming, dressed up as obsessive romance.

Did I agree with everything? No.
Did it unsettle me? Absolutely.
Did the writing keep me locked in against my better judgment? Unfortunately, yes.
Will I read more Lucia Franco?
Obviously.

But only when I’ve cleared my calendar, made peace with my morals taking a temporary vacation, and accepted that some books don’t want your approval. They just want your attention.

Beautiful writing…but….

I waited a full 72 hours before writing this review after finishing this series. I’ve gone back several times and reread scenes, passages, highlights and even the Authors note trying to wrap my head around this series. In an attempt to formulate how I feel about it I’ve come to a few conclusions.

TLDR- wonderful writing. Would never recommend and never read again, but glad I didn’t quit I guess. Would have probably skipped if triggers were included.

1- The author has an incredible way with words and the story is written absolutely beautifully
2- In this version, I do not personally feel triggers were provided that in my opinion were much needed. Triggers should have included: underage, dubcon, and probably more.
3- I only stayed for Adrianna’s story. I wanted to quit after the first book so badly
4- I hate Kova. With every fiber of my being.
5- Because of 3 & 4 I skimmed most of the smut. I hated it because of their dynamic, and maybe I was supposed to?

Trash. Absolute trash.

@luciafranco

Why did I read these books, you ask?
Believe me, I have been asking myself the same question.

I guess, it was mostly because I wanted to see how gross these characters can be and how low can someone stoop? Add into the mix, a volatile, toxic, "forbidden" relationship between an immature hormonal teen h and a cheating, lying, manipulative groomer H and to top it all off the author trying too hard to create unnecessary angst.

Curiosity killed the cat, ig. 🤷🏽‍♀️

The only time I felt a semblance of happiness was after I read about h suffering because of a chronic disease, can you believe it?! I honestly hated these characters so much that watching them suffer brought me so much satisfaction. Because hello, Karma!! Adrianna and Kova had it coming, tbh they deserved it all ten times over for their selfishness, lack of self control and a moral compass, ruining so many lives and in general, for being horrible human beings.

The mushy epilogue did nothing for me, so basically the guy was married to the OW throughout the five massive books and we got ONE chapter of the main characters in a non-cheating, supposedly "healthy" relationship? I am sorry but are you telling me that these two really got over their homewrecker/cheating kink and lived happily ever after?? Yeah, I didn't think so. Does Kova now cheat on Adrianna to spice up their marriage or something and Adrianna loves the angst of it so much that she keeps taking him back like always because they have this "connection"? 🙄
Apart from that, the horrible H had no remorse imo, he literally did bare minimum and the pathetic h took him back like every time so I saw no progress. I was just so exhausted from this lather, rinse, repeat for five whole books that in the end it wasn't at all justifiable.

This is a taboo, age gap, forbidden coach/gymnast romance & going into it you should know that the FMC is 16 at the time of the first book. This series won't be for everyone & I especially want to say don't read this series if all you're going to do is bash the author or the people that enjoy these books. People are allowed to love these books/characters without unwanted opinions/judgement. This series is a work of FICTION.

Adrianna dreams of one day competing at the Olympics. She knows it'll be a long road & she wants the very best to get her there. She moves out on her own to train at the World Cup Academy, which is owned by Konstantin Kournakova (Kova.) Kova's a 2x Olympic gold medalist. He's a hot & mean Russian coach, who also happens to be twice Adrianna's age. Kova is hardcore & he works Adrianna to the max. Lines blur between coach & gymnast & an affair begins.

Throughout the series you watch Adrianna push herself both mentally & physically to multiple breaking points. It was beyond painful watching how far Adrianna would go to achieve her Olympic dreams but I couldn't help but root for her.

Kova... I loved every mean & sweet thing about him. He's not a very soft man, he's a huge asshole for the most part, but he does have these moments of showing just how compassionate & kind he is. He would do anything for Ria & I loved him for that.

Both Kova and Ria's characters are beyond flawed. Their story is not a conventional one & Ria is the other woman for the majority of this series. Their relationship is full of passion, lust/love, admiration, toxicity & drama. This series is not a feel good one & it's a rollercoaster full of emotions.

That being said, I genuinely did love reading this series & it DOES have a HEA. S/O to the people that read this series as it came out because I would have DIED waiting for each book. Despite the age gap between Ria & Kova, I think Lucia wrote their story beautifully & I understand why so many people love this series.

This series was one of the most addicting stories I have ever read!! I was invested from the first page and seriously couldn’t put it down… unless I was frustrated that is. Cause that happened A LOT. But I also swooned, cried, smiled, felt like a proud mama bear…. ALL THE EMOTIONS!!! 😩

This is an age gap/forbidden/taboo romance between a gymnast and her coach. Make sure you check TWs, cause there’s quite a few. And boy, was it angsty. Kova infuriated me the majority of the time, I’m not gonna lie. Ria too on her part. It was such a toxic rollercoaster ride but I loved every second.

Ria was so frustrating and naive. I wanted to reach in and shake some sense into her so many times. But she was also so strong, resilient and determined. She know what she wants and she’s not afraid to go after it. My heart ached with everything she had to endure. And trust me…. There’s a ton she goes through.

Okay… I love Kova. But ughhhh that man!! He frustrated me sooooo much. I wanted to punch him…. Repeatedly. But I also swooned for all his soft, vulnerable moments. And how much he encouraged Ria and wanted her to be the best she could be… MY HEART!! 😍

“𝘒𝘰𝘷𝘢 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴.”

Go into this one blind and just enjoy the insane ride you’re about to embark on. Safe to say, I am now officially obsessed

I loved the off balance series . One of the best series! And i know I will revist them often. It's a forbidden love story between a coach and gymnast it's very passionate and intense story it's raw and messy. It was in some ways inspiring too.
It's almost as if how much love could destroy to get wha it wanted. I loved how strong headed adriana was with what she wanted in her life. I love reading strong female characters . Kova was an anti-hero .he did some questionable things but it showed how much he loved and cared for ria. Kova and ria are pure fire, scorching hot.i loved how strong there connection was. These characters are going to stay with me for a very long time
this books are seriously addictive and drains you emotionally
This is the first series I have read from this author and I have absolutely loved loved her writing and looking forward to read more books by her.

I absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVED the Off Balance series. I didn't want it to end! The story of Kova and Adrianna was a complicated one but so worth it. This story made me laugh many times, tear up, and swoon over the love they had for each other. Lucia did such a great job with this story and I am so glad I finally read it. I had been eyeing it for awhile and finally took the plunge. I'm officially a fan of this Author. What a rollercoaster ride. It was worth every bit of it though. As per my review on the last book (book #5), there was some things I would have changed regarding the way it played out, but it did not ruin the experience for me. Just loved it. If you have been sitting on this one or hesitating, just do it!

In the revised version the character is of a legal age. However I did find the way it was written to show the MFC as incredibly naive and innocent which made the whole thing feel sort of icky and the power play uncomfortable. If I were to look past this then the books in themself were okay, the spice was enjoyable and the other characters added an interesting element however I found that a lot of the books seems to be repeating themselves over and over again and I found it to quite tiresome. I think in the 3rd or 4th book they have a particular argument that made the book more uncomfortable as it seemed unrealistic and completely took it too far. The main characters inability to look after herself is another thing I take issue with as it really frustrated me.

These books…this couple…they took me on a journey I will never forget. I’l typically struggle with multiple books about the same couple…especially more than 2. I tend to lose interest and get bored with characters. That did not happen a single time with Kova and Ria. They consumed me and now that I’m done, I will miss them. I’m afraid of picking up another book right now, because I haven’t finished sitting with this story.
That being said, I would not recommend these books to everyone…they are controversial and polarizing and some people will not be able to get past the surface differences and reasons these two should not be together, and that’s okay. But these books will always hold a special place in my heart.

This series absolutely consumed me! I hated them both at times. Kova hid so many secrets!!. And Adriana was just stupid at times. But I had to remember that, not only was she 17, but also very sheltered and naive. She had no mother figures during her childhood and teen years to teach her things young women need to know about their bodies. You feel so sorry for her through out most of the series. ….. This story made me feel every single emotion. If age gap is questionable for you, you may want to proceed with caution. Especially when it involves young women. BUT, this is one of the best love stories I’ve ever read.

what a RIDEEEE!

I binged this series in a week and the hangover was real.

(Without hinting at spoilers)

The taboo of it all. The character development of Ria and Kova was so interesting. The PASSION of these two individuals. At times they were a little toxic, but aren’t we all. They’re determination to succeed and hard work to make it happen. This is a love story, spread over 2-3 years. Of two people when the timing wasn’t quite right and others were in the way.

their love for each other 🥹

If you love a great, sexy taboo romance- here it is!

I loved this series so much that I still think about it even a year after reading it. When I went into it I was expecting a romance between a coach and an athlete but coming out of it, I remember sitting in my bed with tears burning my cheeks because it was that touching to me. I never react this way towards a book! But this entire story, and how the ending was such a long time coming, it made me understand what the author wanted to project. The relationship between them was so complicated and profound yet beautifully written and built. Ugh, I just loved it so much! Such a moving story

Most addictive romance series I’ve read in a long time; the one thing I’m glad the author did with the characters and their illicit story is the 360 degree from start to finish, making them finally lovable. Also that was one of the best HEA I’ve ever read ffs.

So unexpected; but I still can’t reconcile Adrianna’s age when it all started, because nope. The broad scope of the story arc in the series merits a higher rating but I can’t give it purely because of the FMC’s age at the start.

This love story is one for time. The banter back and forth between the 2 characters. There is so much love, hate, lies and you feel it all. Some of Kova’s actions make you want to hate him, but at the end of the day his love for Ria and wanting to protect her takes over. Plus the journals — chef kiss.

Great story

This was a great story that overall I would give a 4-4.5. I feel that some of the plot was a bit over the top and the hea was a bit too much, like too perfect happy, if that makes sense, almost mushy/corny at the end, otherwise, it was a good, well written book.

Somehow Lucia can throw in a bunch of tropes that most people hate and it just works!

Plus, she writes the absolute best spice! 🥵
