Wild Wastes #4

Wild Wastes 4

Rate this book
Before world war two could reach its conclusion, the world suffered what could only be defined as a cataclysm.

Legend has it that an experiment failed. Catastrophically so. And when it failed, the center of the United States, from the Sierra Nevada to the Mississippi river became "The Waste", where everything changed.

Except it didn't only happen in North America. In fact, it happened all around the world.

Few places were spared, though only a handful experienced it as deeply as the United States did.

In The Wastes of the world, every fantasy creature, fairy tale demon, or mythological monster exists. From Orcs, to Neriads, Ogres, Trolls, Wraiths, Elves, Harpies, and even Beastmen. They all exist, and all despise humankind.

For North America, in the shattered bones of the country, the west and east coasts new governments have rose, then fell.

Vince has become the master of a major portion of the Wastes of North America. Responsible for everything and everyone inside his boundaries. There is little that doesn’t fall under his purview.

Now, he has to take up a courier mission of sorts.

Except he’s the item to be delivered.

Straight to the European continent. Where Vince plans on delivering a massive helping of Yosemite to the masses.

All while giving them a heavy taste of the Legion technology.

A job that’ll change the lives of everyone where he lands as well as where he came from.

Ahh, like slipping into a warm bath. Tasty. My only gripe was that it was too short. Other reviews have noted the repetitive nature of the story but honestly I couldn't care less. (As Weird Al would point out that means I do care; at least a little) It was such a fun ride and Andrea Parsneau is an amazing actress narrator. Looking forward to two more books in the series!

Vince is given the chance to help his wife Berenga by doing a favor for the Architect. One that takes him outside North America. We get the chance to see how other parts of the world handled themselves and their new residents after the Portal Incident many years prior.

The lores and doctrine of Yosemite are expanded greatly in this volume.

The second restart of what were supposed to be trilogies. I found this one had more story than did SSoSH 4, and the rating reflects that. I also thought (the author stated as much) that this pen name was "dead" but evidently not completely.

It's a typical Arand book, so bear in mind that this review is graded on that curve. Looks like this is going somewhere, so we'll see where the revamp takes us.

So this is a rehash of book three, just in Spain.

With this and book four about Felix it is clear Arrand has run out of ideas. While this was entertaining, it was the campaign in book three retold. Nothing more, nothing less.

Fun romp x4

This book wasn't as well edited as the previous books, which made it a bit less fun to read, but the writing and storyline were still v good.

Cons: Really don't like it when authors start referring to story-important characters with stupidly awkward descriptions, like randomly calling Red 'the Undead', like saying "I'm too lazy to find a story-driven reason to add in a description of their 'race', so I'll just throw in an awkward forced description for no reason, just to remind you that they're different than the others". Referring like that to a character is what you do to new characters, not longtime characters that readers and main characters in the story know and like. It's demeaning to the story and the readers, IMHO.
The were only 2 or 3 other spots I noticed where the wrong word was used, or a complicated phrasing ended up not making sense, which is really good. But compared to the first three books where I don't recall noticing any, it was definitely noticeable.

Still, all in all, enjoying the storyline and characters, so I definitely recommend. Noticeably better writing, and better editing, than most of the writers of this genre that I've read on Kindle.

At the end of book three is was said:
“Petra died for the cause. She’s been martyred. And quite well. This area is just… oozing… with faith magic and worship. “Given time, and a temple, this could be the cornerstone of a religion for Yosemite. “Let Petra lie. To remain dead.” Vince opened his mouth to immediately reject the idea. “Hold on—hear me out,” the man said quickly. “Let Petra remain dead. She only had maybe ten more years anyways. She would have died of old age.

Darren, Randi; Arand, William D.. Wild Wastes: Southern Storm (p. 223). Kindle Edition.
The point was to create a Cult of Petra as a religion, everyone agreed to that. Now in book four, changed their minds and destroyed the religion and we're back to the soldier-ant body. Shifting canon really sucks for a reader.

They’d very likely blasphemed the gift they’d been given as they had haggled, browbeaten, and bartered back and forth with the Overgod until she’d been given back her original Soldier-ant body.

Another great extension to the story, but don’t just go from book 3 to 4

A lot has happened between Book 3 and Book 4 in the other stories in his other series which all intersect and interweave to make the complete story so far. I think each book now has a ‘recommended reading order’ list which should be followed to get you to the point where you will understand what is going on. Enjoyable story, liking the new characters which appear as well as the pre-existing ones. Vince has learned from his brother and has moved forward with a new mission which suits his personality and ability for conquest. Waiting patiently for the continuation or next story in this complex universe of books/series.

Good but not great

The book is good but not great it could use smell checker and someone to edit the parent rooms but overall the story is okay I do believe the author has a thing for erotic fantasy because that is a good portion of this book and not much of a plot to begin with but I would recommend this book especially if you should have already started reading the series what I don't like is that series ties in with others that the others are written because 2 main characters are in this book From other stories..... Runner and Ryker.

And that means that this story ties in with the war against Zeus.

Which makes all of this a computer stop fantasy none of it's real they're all constructs.

Exciting and OP

Vince is a beast. Surrounded by his wives, concubines and allies, they invade europe. They land in Spain and find that the country is run by nobles who have enslaved their dryads, all but exterminated dragons and are at war with mages. They have allied with an organization that apparently revers dark magic. Its not going to end well for them. Vince, Red and the others are ruthless to their enemies but loving and supportive to their allies. Vince is also refreshingly direct without flowery words whilst preparing the knife for the back. He'll still knife you when necessary, because there is no honor in war, but preferrs to let you know that if you oppose him, your reward will be a cold grave.

Vince is Back

It’s good to have Vince and his supporters back for another adventure. As usual, new characters were introduced. But more importantly, Vince is back doing what he does best, kicking butt and conquering new territory.
Dryads, dragons and elves, what’s not to love. Plus Vince continues his trek to becoming a God level being.
These stories work best when Vince and Felix work together and it’s finally revealed what the over-gods are doing.

An Interesting New Chapter

While SSoSH4 felt like a soft reboot, Wild Wastes 4 feels much more like a continuation of the original WW trilogy, in a slightly disconnected location. While I feel there are some minor foibles of plot and grammar that could be worked on, overall I thoroughly enjoyed this volume and look forward to the next.

Another great addition

As the title says, it's a good one. Love the continuation, and the cumulative direction these are taking. Highly appreciate the speed in which they continue to release for each series, without sacrificing quality. I've read everyone so far, and even re-read recently. Thanks for all the hard work!

Not bad

While the sex scenes and innuendo felt to be a little much at times,I have to give the author credit for actually getting them all to match Vince’s personality and development in an organic and intellectually honest way.I’m looking forward to watching him and his team try to conquer Europe.

Wonderful surprise

I was not expecting this installment and I was quite wonderfully surprised when I saw it and ah! I was not disappointed. Wild wastes was my first in the multiversal universe and it was so wonderful to visit again. As always I look forward to more of your work. Great addition.

So happy to have this book

Was so happy to see that this book popped up as the author generally prefers trilogies. So seeing more books in his already incredible series is a giant plus. Vince is now making strides to be even more then he already was in this book. This is one of my all time favorite series and hope to read a ton more books with the Campbell brothers in them.

Not the Same

The first three book were interesting and fun. This one is not. Everything from the characters to the plot and world building are mere echoes of the original trilogy.

If anything, feels like a juvenile version of the author, who has written many a wonderful book. I couldn't even finish this book.

Somewhat Confusing

In some places it gets confusing with so many names and creatures.
Over all this book is a wonderful work, the author is definitely a person with an outstanding mind when it comes to fantasy.
Ms. Darren and Mr. Arand are head and shoulders ahead of most of their peers,!

Fantastic return to one of my first harem reads.

Arand has written yet another fantastic tale for his Sovereign verse and I am all for it. That it is continuing a trilogy I love dearly just makes it even better.

Very good book

This is a fine fantasy harem adventure novel. It is well written and edited. Old favorites like Blue and Red are joined by new favorites like Regata and Elizabeth. I anxiously await the sequel. The harem master author has delivered once again.

Great new start

As a follow up to the prior series this is an excellent new start that introduces new characters and new challenges without detracting from the prior stories. I found it very enjoyable.

Yup

Knocking it out of the park. The story, the major arc, is still developing. The new characters, and the expansion of existing ones was perfect and spot on. Can't wait for the next.

Still awesome

Still awesome series. I'm glad it's not refreshing or feeling like it's trying to start over with a new trilogy from the very beginning. It's genuinely just continuing where it left off and in a great way

Awesome! A sort of restart but not a restart.

Arand's tales are singularly thrilling. This one is another fine addition to the Wild Wastes series, and the Sovereignverse as a whole.
Can't wait for the next book, any book, from Arand.
