Quote from the book :”Boss, you made a You tube video taunting them, “ Bob told Constantine, keeping his voice low and flat. The last thing Bob wanted was Constantine angry with him.
“Small technicalities,” Constantine replied, waving his paw in the air in a dismissive gesture. 🌹🌹🌹

The Origins of Constantine

This is the origin story of the 5,000 year old talking cat, Constantine who is Death's companion. It was when Death went by the name Anubis. Short story.

A traditional fairytale with an Egyptian theme...

This was a fun and whimsical story that was like a fairytale with Egypt and her mythology as a back drop.

Even Death himself can get lonely sometimes.

The character development was handled nicely for everyone from the protagonist to the kind friends he relied on as he adjusted to being the right hand cat of Death himself. I enjoyed peeling back all of the layers of the characters I met. My first impressions of many of them were quickly adjusted as I learned new things about them that I wouldn’t have necessarily guessed in advance. Other characters were more forthcoming with their personalities, but I still had a wonderful time finding additional examples of their kindness, courage, and other positive traits as time went on.

I would have liked to see a little more time spent on the world building. The author provided tantalizing hints about this version of ancient Egypt that I kept hoping would be explored in greater depth than they were. It did make me wonder if the full-length novels in this series had the space to dive further into this time and place, though, and it was a minor criticism of a novella I otherwise really liked. Based on my first taste of this world, I’m definitely curious to learn more about it!

Ms. Gomez had a playful sense of humour that worked perfectly for this setting and these characters. There were multiple times when the dialogue made me chuckle out loud, especially when Constantine made another one of his wry comments. Her characters knew exactly how to gently goad each other into doing the right thing even if it wasn’t always necessarily for the right reason. The juxtaposition of their occasionally mixed motivations and their often surprisingly wholesome life choices was delightful. I love meeting nuanced characters like these who can find the funny side of even the most serious topics.

This is part of a series, but you don’t have to be familiar with the previous works to enjoy it. I had no trouble jumping straight into this world as a brand new reader.

I’d recommend The Origins of Constantine to any teen or adult who likes alternate history.

My Favorite Cat

The Origins of Constantine delves into the fascinating backstory of Constantine, the infamous five-thousand-year-old talking cat from The Intern Diaries series. In this prequel, DC Gomez takes readers on a journey through Constantine’s early years, offering a glimpse into the heart of a hero whose fierce sense of justice often overshadows his common sense.

The story begins with Constantine as a lowly, unassuming tom-cat, far from the wise and enigmatic figure fans are familiar with in the Intern Diaries books. Despite his humble beginnings, Constantine's fierce will and unshakable loyalty to his friends shine through, even when it means putting himself in grave danger. His instincts drive him to fight for those he cares about, often to the point of recklessness.

What makes this origin story particularly compelling is how it captures Constantine's growth into the heroic figure he eventually becomes. It’s not a smooth journey—his fiery determination often leads him into trouble, but it’s this very trait that defines his character. DC Gomez expertly blends humor with moments of introspection, allowing readers to see the internal struggles that shape Constantine's decisions.

One of the book's strengths lies in the writing. Gomez’s sharp wit and clever dialogue are on full display, especially when it comes to Constantine's interactions with the other characters. The talking cat’s sarcastic, no-nonsense demeanor adds a layer of charm to the story, while also underscoring the complexity of his character.

While the novel primarily focuses on action and Constantine's evolving sense of justice, it also hints at deeper themes of friendship, loyalty, and sacrifice. Fans of the *Intern Diaries* will appreciate the backstory, while newcomers can easily jump in and enjoy the tale of this unlikely hero.

I love cats. I love Egyptology. I love fun stories about underdogs who become champions.
Check. Check. Check.

What I liked... the friendship between Anubis and Constantine. The way they connected and related was kind. It was very loving and direct. They inspired each other.

What I didn't like... there really wasn't anything, nothing too distracting but just not the full five srars. Maybe it was to short! I enjoyed the plot and the twist and turns.

Great short story witch I definitely recommend!

The book The Origin of Constantine by DC Gomez is a fascinating stand alone tale of how a cat became an immortal being. This novella of The Intern Series does a great job of introducing a reader to the fascinating world in which DC Gomez has made paranormal characters adjacent to todays reality. This stand alone story introduces an interesting ensemble of characters who are employed in various capacities by a cat named Constantine and his boss death. This story is so enchanting that any reader who enjoys a good story would like reading it. I was thoroughly entranced by the vivid characterizations of both humans and paranormal others in this book from the very first chapter. The story itself is an incomparable tale told from the unique perspective of a cat who happens to be the assistant of the god of death. This stand alone story makes a great introduction to a series of books that I just can’t wait to read. It’s definitely a worthy read for all ages! Not to be missed.

Solid, quick-read UF origin story

This short novella/long story from the Death’s Intern universe is set in the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis, with side trips to the necropolis of Saqqara. I’m going with an alternate dimension Egypt, because eventually the cat protagonist is given a non-Egyptian name that I don’t believe existed in 3000 BCE.

This adventure-origin story is presented in what I’ll call a “fairy tale format,” because it’s a “telling” story with less showing. However, this format seemed authentic when told from the POV of the smart, spunky cat without a name.

That said, during the first third of the story, Anubis has an almost boring, blasé voice, which does little for his POV or character. I would have preferred reading his introductory chapter from the spunky cat’s POV. Also, Anubis’ growth arc is uneven and less satisfying, whereas the cat has grown to become a lion.

Overall a good story.

The Review

This was a fast-paced and fun read. The author has expertly woven fantasy and historical fiction/alternative fiction elements. The rich character dynamics and humor that the main series this novella stems from were profoundly present in the narrative, and the balance the author found in the world-building and character development was perfectly executed here.

The fast-paced novella and the entertaining story found in both the mythos and history of the story were great to see unfold on the page. The dynamics between Constantine the Cat and Anubis were electric, and the narrative's setting added to the historical significance of this series overall.

The Verdict

Memorable, fast-paced, and engaging author D.C. Gomez’s “The Origins of Constantine” is a must-read novella. The funny exchanges that Constantine shares with Bob, Anubis, and more, and the depth of mythos that the author delves into, make this a gripping story.

The Origins of Constantine is set as a prequel to The Intern Diaries, a fantasy series of ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses. Although I've not read the main books in the series, I was intrigued enough by the cover image of a cat hovering over a pyramid with a spooky shadow of Anubis in the misty background - I had to try it!

Constantine, apparently, is a walking, talking immortal cat, and best friends with Anubis, the jackal-headed god of the dead. Constantine meets Anubis and discovers in him a lonely, misunderstood diety, and a soul bond is formed.

I really enjoyed this novella, and will definitely read more by this author if the works cross my lap.
Kudos to the author.

The Origins of Constantine by D.C. Gomez is a must-read adventure for all. Plenty of humor, action, paranormal beings and danger. What I loved most of all was that this book takes me back to the Egyptian empire. I always found Egypt and its buildings so fascinating. D.C. Gomez not only takes me back but also gives me a thrill ride of a lifetime. This series is almost like Alice in Wonderland with the crazy yet hilarious things that happen but with a more badass vibe. This writer creates a flawless state of the art world building and exceptional character experience that readers from a variety of genres will enjoy like I have.

I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.

Constantine is a 5,000-year-old cat that works for Death. This is the story of his origins. He was once a small cat in Egypt and was adopted by Anubis. When Anubis lost much of his treasure, the thieves critically injured Constantine. So, Anubis made him immortal by linking him with him. From there on out, Constantine decided to serve him in every capacity. He also became a King among the animals. He gained incredible powers and skills to use. You will not want to miss this short story on how Constantine came to be…it is a great story! I received this book for free and am leaving a voluntary review.

I read Constantine in one of the T.A.L.E.S books before reading this and loved him in those series. I was super excited to see there was a whole book on how he became what he is now!

This was the funnest short read, honestly! It is an urban fantasy book as well. Who doesn't love a talking 5,000 year old cat?!

We get to see how Constantine met death and became his right-hand cat! Even death gets lonely. It seems Constantine has always been sassy and snarky since he could start talking, and I absolutely love that. I am so glad to have read this book!

I did receive this as an ARC and this is my honest opinion! Thank you D.C. Gomez for the opportunity!!

This one is super cute! I loved the back story!

This Urban Fantasy is a Novella in The Intern Diaries Series. This is a quick, and enjoyable read.
There is no romance, just fun adventure with building friendships.
The book moves at a quick pace following how Constantine became the cat he is today.
The characters are a delight. As true to the series the banter is wonderful, often leaving you laughing.
The world building is a little more complicated in this one due to the introduction of Egyptian gods, and way of life. The book still remains easy to follow, and get lost in the story.

The story of how Constantine came to be Anubis (AKA Death) right hand "cat". Travel all the way down memory lane to Egypt, when humans revered the gods. What happens when you have suffered for the entirety of your short life, but some how while trying to help a god you get the opportunity of a "lifetime". This is how Constantine adventure begins!! You like adventure, ancient gods and a cat with a scheming mind; well you are in for a ride!

This is a funny story of a five-thousand-year-old talking cat named Constantine who is the right-hand man of Death and the guardian/trainer of all the Interns that worked for Death. Bob is an Army Veteran who was kidnapped by witches and rescued by Isis Black who is an Intern and now works for Death. This is the story of Constantine the talking cat and his zany adventures. I really enjoyed this humorous short-story historical fantasy read.

I loved this novella about the origins of Constantine. The scrappy little cat met Anubis and they became best friends. You can certainly understand how they became so close in a short time. This is a fun short read that makes the interactions in the other books make sense. It is really a good story even if you don't read the others. But I do recommend reading the others, too.

Decent story!!

The story was interesting, with good characters and a decent plot. Please keep writing. Are people really the same thru the ages, or do writers just write them that way? Just answered my own question. One thing I got out of the Old Testament was that the people then had the same faults and failings as we do now. You know they are human by the sins they commit.

I seriously cannot get enough of these characters!! I love that this was all about Constantine and his sassy nature. I definitely like seeing how he got his start with death, and I have to say it's cute. Also. I know he's meant to look like a Main Coon. But my brain keeps making him like Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

I absolutely love this cat! Constantine was a badass before he even became Death's best partner. As a prequel to the Intern Diaries, it really does help you understand so much about this delightful character. He is more human than some people I know! This is definitely one to read.

Unusual. A paranormal set in ancient Egypt where the reader gets to meet death or Anubis the Egyptian god of death. He’s bored and lonely so he gets a cat. End of boredom and loneliness. Very light
