Even kings who serve at the whim of gods break the rules every now and then.

As the newly anointed king of the Underworld, I’ve worked hard to clean up the mess left behind by my predecessor. The realm is in relative peace at the moment, my main focus now on deciding the fate of recently departed souls. It’s a tediously boring task, and honestly, one I despise doing. But just when I think I can’t stand another moment of the monotony, one soul changes it all.

Nyssa McKnight earned her ticket to Hell. She made her choices and even at the prospect of eternal damnation, she doesn’t seem to regret the actions that led her here. I can tell by her utter defiance that life has hardened her, a trait that has carried over to her in death. She should be begging me for mercy but instead calls me a “big old winged bat”. I should toss her right into The Crimson River for her insolence but instead I think I’ll keep her in servitude.

While I struggle to reconcile the intrigue—and attraction—I have for this human, I am forced to spend my days investigating rumors of an uprising in the Underworld. Unfortunately, my desire to keep Nyssa has provided a weak spot for the rebellious Dark Fae looking to gain control, one they’re quick to act on. Now, with Nyssa in danger and my throne threatened, I will stop at nothing to restore order, even if it means letting her go.

Can Amell, the king of the Underworld, find true love, or is he destined to rule alone until the end of days?

The Midnight Realm is a standalone romantic fantasy novel about unexpected redemption within The Chronicles of the Stone Veil series.

The Midnight Realm is book #7 of the Chronicles of the Stone Veil series by Sawyer Bennett. It is standalone told from dual POV with a happy ending.

Tropes:
✔️ paranormal
✔️ epic romance
✔️ tortured heroine

Fallen angel and newly appointed King of the Underworld Amell has made some much needed changes and now his most important task besides keeping the universe safe from his subjects is the monotonous task of rendering judgement on recently departed souls.

That is until it’s Nyssa McKnight’s turn to be judged. The strong and resilient, insolent and sassy soul brings new life to his otherwise mundane existence and soon the two find love and redemption together. But can Amell protect the very fragile human in a real full of powerful and terrifying monsters, some of whom wish to overthrow the new king and wouldn’t hesitate to user her to do it?

I wanted to read more about Amell the minute I met him in the first books of the series. I was eagerly awaiting this story and was totally satisfied with its development.

I was swept away by this entrancing world. Brimming with magic, sizzling attraction and romance, I was held captive by Sawyer Bennett's expert storytelling, textured and nuanced in a way that had my imagination soaring and my heart in a stronghold. The Midnight Realm delivers the perfect red hot escape from the cold winter.

The Midnight Realm is easily one of my favorite books of the year and will go straight to my re-read list.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the seventh book in the series, and I have to admit I am a little behind, but the last couple ensured that I was very excited to get my hands on this new release! I definitely would recommend that you read them in order, as the ongoing storylines build and develop in each installment. There is, however, a sufficient, cleverly intertwined recap on the story to date at the beginning of the book which just prompts the memory as to what the state of play is in the series to date!

Nyssa has had a pretty rubbish life to date, and it is about to get a whole lot worse as she is standing on the bridge in hell, waiting to be pushed into The Crimson River... game over! Instead, thanks to her feistiness and the King of the Underworld, who is attracted to her verve, her life (or rather death) changes in ways she would have never imagined!

Drawing from the adventures of the previous book where Amell goes to the rescue of his daughter, Thalia, we find this has caused the displeasure of the gods. Now he will reign in the midnight realm, and how he acts proves him to be dark, yet good. It takes Nyssa a little longer to understand what is going on in the Underworld, and much longer to trust – but it is fun to see the world through her eyes, and to give Amell a reason to go on, now that his planned life has taken a different turn.

The chemistry between the two of them is based not just on carnal lust, but also a meeting of their minds and humour. Amell soon knows what led to her arrival in hell, but gives her the space to explain and the chance to rise above her past and remember the transition she had already started to a new life.

Sexy, fun, intense, and conducted in a world of magic which has rules and ways which she does not understand, Nyssa and Amell light up the page – and the epilogue is everything any romantic could want.

M/F Paranormal Romance

This is the seventh book in this series and they are all amazing. You won't want to miss them.

While you don't necessarily have to read them in order to know what's going on, I would recommend it so that you can better understand the nuances between the characters.

Nyssa is a human who has had a difficult life. While working, she runs into someone from her past. With no remorse, she takes action. What she doesn't expect is what comes after. Nyssa is not truly afraid of death and knows that she deserves everything that happens to her, but what she isn't expecting is to find the King of the Underworld so fascinating.

Amell is the King of the Underworld. While he isn't there by choice, he knows what his job is and how to do it well. When he meets Nyssa, he's immediately intrigued by her. She isn't a soul that is afraid of him or what is to come. The fact that she has a snarky attitude is icing on the cake.

While Amell and Nyssa navigate the Underworld and their chemistry, forces outside of them will fight to take over.

Amell and Nyssa never thought the hope for love or a connection, and when they find it, it will take all of their trust to truly figure out if this is something they can sustain.

You won't be disappointed in this book and you'll stay up late just to finish it. While it's not as action packed as the previous book, it still has a lot going on.

I adored Amell’s story and loved that he was given his HEA. The “eyebrow waggle” times mirror those of Lucifer and this is one spicy read you won’t want to put down. I know I didn’t and can’t wait for more of this fabulous world. Nyssa and Amell end the year as one of my top couples.

5 Star review of The Midnight Realm (Chronicles of the Stone Veil # 6) by Sawyer Bennett

I’m not a huge fan of fantasy/paranormal but this series from Sawyer Bennett is out of this world one that drew me in and quickly had me invested. This is human Nyssa McKnight and King of the Underworld, Amell’s story and what a complicated story it is. Sawyer Bennett managed to tear my heart out before she put it back together again in this emotional roller coaster of a read.

From the first chapter I was on the edge of my seat, my heart in my mouth as I read The Midnight Realm with a combination of suspense, danger, intrigue and heat that ticked the boxes for me.

Amell is a man determined to get who he wants and he wants Nyssa. Their chemistry is explosive and it was entertaining to watch the push and pull dynamic of their relationship.
Can these two overcome the dangers that they face and in doing so connect and find love?

One click and find out.

If you can get a dark fae like Amell to be King of the Underworld, then always get Amell to be King of the Underworld. Why? Well, for starters, it’s less like the underworld when he’s in charge, and more like a dark fairy fantasy realm that includes magic and judgment of people who’ve done horrible things, and who doesn’t want that?

This latest standalone book in the Chronicles of the Stone Realm series is unlike any of the other books in the series, or anything that Sawyer Bennett has ever written, really, and I am here for all of it.

I truly had no clue how this book would end. So many possibilities were swirling in my mind, which is typical of the Stone Veil series for me. Perhaps it’s that I am a relative newb to the romance fantasy genre; however, Sawyer has a lot of original ideas and storylines. Who could make the King of the Underworld a hero other than Milton? The answer is Sawyer Bennett.

The Midnight Realm😍

We met Amell in the first few books in this series with Finley and Carrick. Amell is now the king of the Underworld, father to the Shadow Princess and tasked by Zora to ensure he keeps control of his subjects and prevents them from taking over the First Dimension. At one of the judgment days, Nyssa immediately stirs his interest as she is different to all the others that have come before him❣️

I loved Amell and Nyssa and enjoyed this glimpse into the Underworld and I’m excited to learn more in the next books and hopefully we will get a glimpse of this couple again❤️‍🩹

Loved this one! So great to see Amell get his happy ending. He may be a Dark Fae but he has a deep heart and all of it belongs to Nyssa. Every piece of it. From the very beginning he protected her and looked after her, making sure she was never harmed, threatening anyone with the River if they dared hurt her and making good on his promise.

Of course that means she becomes a liability and is in danger being with him which causes Amell to hurt Nyssa worse than what she experienced her entire life. But once he stopped being an idiot it was delightful. Truly the end scene on the bridge when she was acting as the announcer and Amell's reaction to it, as well as her being called his Queen, well, just loved it.

Now, if Amell would just bring Lucian back from the River of Death, that would be great!

I honestly can't say enough good things about this entire series. If you love a good fantasy with incredible world building, strong characters, and fated soul mates (Gods, Daemons, Fae), then I highly recommend you give this series a try.
This story is about Amell, King of the Underworld, and Nyssa, a human cast down to hell for judgement.
This can be read as a stand alone, but to really understand the backstory, I would suggest starting from the beginning.

"I want to bind my life to yours, and yours to mine, and I want to live until the end of time with you. I want to worship and love you every day until the world can’t go on anymore, and then I want to love you beyond that into the next world.”

The Midnight Realm is fast-paced and filled with action. Learning more about Amell was a treat, because he definitely intrigued me in prior novels in this series. And he totally met his match with Nyssa.
These different dimensions, and how those who live in them evolve is still something I want to know more about. And I especially enjoyed the parts where Amell had to show his harder, stronger side as a ruler, and where Nyssa still kept up with everything and continued to fall for him.
Another winner in my opinion.

The Midnight Realm (Chronicles of The Stone Veil Book 7) by Sawyer Bennett takes us back to the Underworld. Amell is now the king of the Underworld after the failed attempt of the previous Queen who was trying to tear the Veil to the earth dimension. The author started out the story basically given a recap of the players and a little of their stories from the previous books. This was such a treat that it gave me just enough information that I knew everything. I didn't have to try and remember the other books. Loved and appreciated it. Nyssa is a human who has had a hard life. One night working she happens to run into a guy from her past that sets off a chain no reaction that causes her to be sent to the Underworld where she stands before Amell. It is Amell's job as king to decide whether a Soul is thrown into the Crimson River for eternal torment or reincarnation. When it is Nyssa turn to be judged, she says somethings that has Amell thinking hard as to what to do with Nyssa. I loved this story. The story kept my attention and I couldn't put it down. Amell and Nyssa are a trip and their interaction made for a fabulous story. A 5 star read for me. I didn't know what I expected from this story. All I knew was I liked the previous books and the author. She did not disappoint.

Oh man, how I loved being pulled back into the Chronicles of the Stone Veil World. This story is Amell and Nyssa's, if you have read the prior book in the series THE SHADOW PRINCESS, you'll recall that Amell is Thalia's father and he has been made king of the Underworld after his assistance in taking down his predecessor.

Nyssa McKnight is hell's newest arrival and part of Amell's duties as King is to decide what happens to the souls of those that die but have gone to their true destination for one reason or another, when Nyssa is in front of King Amell on the Bridge of Judgement there is only one decision for him to make with this sassy woman. Spare her and find out why she intrigues him so much.

To say that I absolutely adored these two together would be a grave understatement. They were beyond perfection. Sawyer Bennett has given us a fallen angel and a woman that has done questionable things and has you rooting for them right from the very beginning.

Nyssa's story was one that was hard to digest but it all made sense on why she did the things that she did, and why she was spared the one way trip to The Crimson River. I loved her spunk and lets be honest here anyone that can call a fallen angel a "big old winged bat" is definitely feisty and can hold her own against him.

The chemistry was great and I would love to see these two pop up in future books just the way Thalia did in this one.

If you enjoy STEAMY Paranormal Romances, Fallen Angel Romances, Underworld Romances, or Inter-species Romances I highly recommend this book to you.

Happy Reading!!!

Review by Trinette Dungee

“Serve you? In what ways?” I ask suspiciously. “In any way I want,” he replies, a devilish grin tipping one side of his mouth. “I’m not having sex with you.” “Won’t you?” he counters confidently.

Jeez…does this guy scream Alpha/Confidence/Sex/Power or what!?

We’ve encountered Amell several time throughout this series, but at the last time, he was was being united with his human daughter and being given the throne to The Underworld. At this point Amell is in the midst of reorganizing The Underworld and has been banished there, not allowed to visit Earth Realm due to his prohibited interference with Thalia’s battle for Vyronas. Amell has determined The Underworld needs a makeover and it’s not going to resemble anything of Kymaris’ Underworld. In the new Underworld, there is a sense of peace…well as much peace as there can be in Hell. As he adjusts to this new position and life Amell encounters a soul sent to him like nothing he’s ever experienced. Enter Nyssa McKnight. She’s a sassy spitfire that while shaking underneath, stands up to Amell. While many of the souls sent to him beg for forgiveness and second chances, Nyssa accepts her fate and does show remorse for the life she’s led or the sins she committed…especially the final sin she committed. Nyssa is quite entertaining at times when she deals with Amell. Such is the case during their first encounter when she’s mouths off to not just his subjects but to him as well.

This is it. He doesn’t even need to hear my crimes. He’s going to dump me in. I hiss at him. “Go ahead and do it, you big old, winged bat. You don’t scare me.” I look around wild-eyed at this place called and scream, “None of you care about me.”

I was totally not expecting Nyssa’s response and completely laughed out loud. At this point Amell himself is discovering that Nyssa isn’t the typical doomed soul, and he decides to keep her around to try and figure her out. What he also figures out is that Nyssa intrigues him on many levels.

Nyssa has led anything but a charmed, carefree life. She’s struggled and fought the entire time doing whatever she needed to do to survive, so it’s no surprise to her when she ends up in Hell and lands at the feet of its King. What she won’t do is beg him for anything, but she does have to learn to live with this never-ending time in Hell.

Of course, Amell becomes completely attached with Nyssa and the two end up in a “relationship” which is not surprising, but what is very surprising or enjoyable is the personalities of these two characters. They were both unapologetically who they were, and for the most part didn’t change throughout the story. They both had vulnerabilities that they didn’t necessarily display to each other but didn’t attempt to hide them once there were known. Nyssa remained Nyssa the entire time. The edges that seemed to have smoothed themselves out were always soft, just not visible to everyone.

As for Amell, he accepted his position because he was appointed by Zora and his feelings for her, but it’s not something he ever wanted. I feel like he definitely struggled quite a bit with what was expected of him as the king of the underworld, and what he wanted to be as the king. While he moves forward with changes that are meant to keep the Underworld as a “dark place” as it should be, his way of ruling is not appreciated by everyone, there are those who want nothing more than to see Kymaris’ dream of taking over the earth realm and he has to establish his supporters from his enemies.

Amell never attempted to hide his love for his daughter, Thalia, and how it hurt him not being able to see her the way he wanted or as often as he wanted. He had a very intimate nature. With Nyssa, it wasn’t just about getting her in his bed, but also getting to know her. Although he knew everything there was to know about what landed her where she was, he opted to let her tell him, He allowed her to become comfortable enough with him to open up about her past life.

“Relax.” he adds. Lie down for a minute and let’s discuss your day.” I stare at him dubiously wondering if lie down and talk means “sex”……”You’re safe Nyssa. It appears I have to repeat this often, but I won’t touch you unless you ask me to.” He hasn’t asked which is confusing. “But you want to?” “I “I want to very much, but point out, intent on arguing this to complete clarity. “You’re evil. You have no morals.” “Few morals,” he corrects me. “Although admittedly, they’re self-serving.” “As I said, you can force me.” “I could easily force you.” I flinch at that admission and wait for him to reassure me. But he doesn’t. “Now, lie back down, face me, and let’s talk.” If that doesn’t scream intimacy, I don’t know what does.

The King of the Underground has a heart…….and it’s freaking adorable and sexy as hell (no pun intended).

Ok so while this book could be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading the previous books first not only because it introduces the world but because it introduces this character as well. Amell is the king of the Underworld. After what he did to save his daughter, this is his new job and it's one he didn't choose. But he knows what his duty is and plans to do it the best way he knows how. Nyssa is a human who isn't afraid to face the consequences of actions she took. Her life hasn't been easy and it's made her not only defiant in the face of Amell but also unrepentant. Which intrigues him and makes him want to know more about her. But when others want to use her to see if she is a weakness, can he keep her safe or will he have to let her go instead?

I really enjoyed this story! I loved that this showed a whole other side to Amell! While yes, he can be hard and "evil"-he has this capacity for caring that I didn't truly expect. Nyssa is just the type of heroine I love! Snarky, strong, and someone who never backs down from anything. I loved her. And honestly, she was the perfect person for Amell. She doesn't take anything from him but she does show him what true friendship and caring is. I loved how their relationship evolves and how everything comes together. And if anyone has ever seen the show Lucifer, I have to say that Amell reminded me of him during parts of this book LOL! Definitely well worth the read!

When I started this series I knew I was gonna love the new king of the underworld, but I was not expecting it to be like this. In the words of Katniss from the HG: I offer as tribute 😂

The way that God (can't call him man since he is not) cared and loved Nyssa, I have no words. She intrigued him firm the moment he laid his eyes on her. She had a shitty life and was not surprised that she ended up in the Underworld. She had such a presence that was hard to ignore. The more time they spent together, the more they craved one another. And when Amell did what he thought was the right choice for her, it almost destroyed them both.

It feels strange to write this but I'm happy the King of the Underworld found his match and gets to live happily for eternity with her.

Due to his previous actions when it comes to his daughter Amell finds himself the reluctant King of the Underworld. One of the things he is required to do is judge the new arrivals and determine their fates. He is conflicted when it comes to Nyssa, and she inspires feelings that he needs to explore and hope that she doesn’t become his downfall.

Nyssa hasn’t led a charmed life and hasn’t always made the right choices, but she owns what she has done. She is strong in will and spirit and will accept whatever her destiny is meant to be and finds Amell a puzzle she would like to solve.

The storyline is unique and the characters of Nyssa and Amell are captivating. They are drawn to each other despite all the forces that are conspiring to keep them apart and they show that as long as they have each other there is nothing they can’t overcome.

YES! This author pulled me back into paranormal reading with this series and I am so glad to see Amell found his own when Nyssa was brought out on the bridge and stood up to the King of the Underworld. Not only did get get his attention she saved her life and ultimately ended up in his quarters and his bed. Who knew Amell could find a heart deep in the depths of the Underworld but once he found his true love there was no turning back, even if he gave her up for her own good. Will they find their way? I can only hope this series goes on and on and on...

I love that Amell finally gets his turn!! I felt bad for him being trapped for doing the right thing. And when the "evil" guy is so descent, you just can't hate him. The story kept me intrigued by Nyssa. Her past and her drive were like a hook. I also felt proud of Amell because his interest in Nyssa was born out of admiration for her strong personality. And while he makes things easier for her, he still likes to mess with her. So he is still a lot of fun.
What I appreciate the most is that this book is not as focused on describing every detail. Is more about their love story. And I found it very enjoyable.

Review:

“How come I had to come to Hell to actually find someone who cares?”

Do you remember Amell from The Shadow Princess? His character was just impossible to love in his daughter Thalia’s book. The powerful Dark Fae, king of the underworld, got my attention since then.

In the Midnight Realm we get to know Amell in his natural habitat, well, at least where he was supposed to be and his character is just so charming and interesting (sometimes ruthless), that I ended up loving him even more. He was the highlight of the story to me. Nyssa was strong and complex, but I struggled to connect with her, I only did by the end of the book. Also, the main conflict of the book was solved just so quickly, I missed a little more action.

Apart from this, the Midnight Ream is definitely a great addition to this series. Who doesn’t love to see the all powerful MMCs falling in love?

I’m truly enjoying the Chronicles of the Stone Veil, and even though this book is part of the series, it is a complete standalone focussing solely on Amell, the king of the underworld, who is allegedly an evil being (all I see is a super good guy doing right by his followers). Amell has taken over from super evil Queen Kymaris who ruled the underworld with complete and utter cruelty, causing chaos throughout the realm. Amell is trying to right all the wrongs that Kymaris did, and while he would tell you with complete and utter honesty that he is an evil being with no heart, the truth of the matter is that Amell cares, quite deeply if the truth be known. When Nyssa comes down to the underworld as a sinner to pay her dues, they both get more than they bargained for. Let’s be honest though, hell is not a place that humans can reside in, dead , or alive, and having the protection of the King is quite fortunate even though it does cause rather a few ripples throughout the land. Lots of passion, a wonderful story full of action and intrigue. I love supernatural romance, and Sawyer Bennett’s stories are super entertaining and of course, super sexy. Totally enjoyable, A loved it. A fantasy romance that was unexpectedly sweet, and highly addictive.

Amell, King of the Underworld

Chronicles of the Stone Veil is Sawyer Bennett's spellbinding and compelling paranormal series. THE MIDNIGHT REALM is the sixth book in this series and also a standalone, although some characters from previous books do appear it is not necessary to read them, though I do recommend it as this series has been a captivating read. THE MIDNIGHT REALM is the story of Amell, King of the Underworld, and Nyssa McKnight, a human who has caught his eye.

After the fall and demise of Kymaris, Amell, a fallen angel, became the new King. His reign is different from the previous ruler, he has changed the Underworld for the better, ensuring its dwellers wanted to remain there rather than wanting to escape. Standing on the Bridge of Judgement, Amell his performing one of his daily, monotonous chores - delivering judgement upon the newly departed souls, when a small human fronts for hers. Nyssa is unlike the others, she doesn't beg or plead for his mercy, instead she tells him she deserves her punishment. But what really garners his attention is when she disrespects him. He is drawn to her sass, her attitude, her determination, and decides to spare her soul. She intrigues him because she shows him no fear.

The chemistry and attraction between Amell and Nyssa are strong. They have a connection that cannot be denied. The Underworld is a dangerous place for a human, and soon Amell takes Nyssa under his wing (pun intended). The more Amell learns about Nyssa the harder it is for him to stay away. As they navigate what they are experiencing together enemies are plotting to gain an advantage over the King. They see that Nyssa has become special to Amell, his weakness, and decide to use her against him. Will he be able to keep her safe, or will he break her heart?

As with the other stories in this series THE MIDNIGHT REALM is highly entertaining, captivating, and thoroughly magical. Even though Amell is meant to be the epitome of evil, there was a softer, caring side to him that Nyssa brought out. She causes him to experience emotions he didn't know he had, as a result Nyssa begins to glow in ways she never has. I adored Nyssa. A hard life had left her numb to emotions, resilient, and feisty, a woman prepared to stand up for herself no matter the circumstances, even when it comes to Amell. She was also able to show Amell what true friendship was by showing him genuine care. Their friendship evolved over time, and it was perfect for their story.

THE MIDNIGHT REALM is another unputdownable read from Sawyer Bennett. Next up is The Ruin of Gods featuring Maddox and Zora ... and I can't wait.

4.5 stars—THE MIDNIGHT REALM is the seventh instalment in Sawyer Bennett’s adult CHRONICLES OF THE STONE VEIL paranormal/fantasy/mythology series. This is Amell, King of the Underworld, and twenty-six year old human bartender Nyssa McKnight’s story line. THE MIDNIGHT REALM can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous storylines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Amell and Nyssa) THE MIDNIGHT REALM focuses on the acclimation and survival of Nyssa McKnight in H*ll. Having lived a life of demons and darkness, Nyssa takes a life, before ending her own. Waiting for her judgment, Nyssa is defiant until the end, an end that never comes when she finds herself saved by the King of the Underworld, the man with whom Nyssa will fall in love. Amell doesn’t know why he saved Nyssa from the Crimson River but Amell knew that Nyssa was about to upend his world in more ways than mattered. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Nyssa and Amell, and the fall-out as Nyssa is targeted for who she is, she was, and who she will never be.

Amell’s punishment for interfering in the laws of the gods is to spend eternity serving judgement from his throne in H*ll but Amell never expected to meet his future in the guise of human Nyssa McKnight, a woman with more spunk and fire than anyone he has ever met. Amell’s control of H*ll is about to be tested when the Dark Fae take aim at the woman with whom he is falling in love.

The relationship between Amell and Nyssa begins as prisoner and jailer. Nyssa has no idea why she was saved from the Crimson River of fire but going from the proverbial fire back into the frying pan means serving a man who is about to control her life. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense without the use of over the top sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including many we have met in previous story lines: Amell’s daughter Thalia (The Shadow Princess 6), god of life/death Zora, demigod Maddox; Dark Fae Truett, and his sister Sorcha, as well as several other Light and Dark Fae. The requisite evil has many faces.

THE MIDNIGHT REALM is another detailed and complex addition to Sawyer’s CHRONICLES OF THE STONE VEIL series, a series wrapped in mythology, angels and demons, Fae, daemons and demons, gods and goddess, power and control, betrayal and vengeance, jealousy and death. The fast paced premise is intriguing, intricate and captivating; the romance is seductive and provocative; the characters are powerful , energetic, charismatic and determined.

I was pleased to find, much like the last book in this series, I was more engaged with this story than the books at the beginning of the series. Here we pick up with Amell, who played a significant role in The Shadow Princess, as the King of the Underworld. This book can be read as a standalone with no problem. The author gives enough information for someone new to the series to be able to enjoy this oddly sweet, very sexy, gut-wrenching tale that, I promise, ends with a HEA.

From the beginning, it’s plain to see that Nyssa is not a bad person. She is someone who has had an extremely rough life that did some minor bad things to keep herself going and one major bad thing for spoiler-ish reasons. It doesn’t matter. You do bad things, you go to the Underworld for judgment. But Nyssa is used to being used, abused, stepped on and over, and otherwise disregarded. All of that has given her a tough shell, she doesn’t back down no matter how dire her situation is. Her reaction to all that is going on around her intrigues Amell and he spares her soul to get more information, thus she ends up a servant in his castle.

Amell is such a fun character. He is not a nice person until he is. There are so many things he does for Nyssa, and that he had done in the past for others, that show he actually has a huge heart. Being considered a friend/loved one of Amell is a hard-won position, but once you are in that inner circle he is loyal to a fault. Nyssa is used to being cast aside, no matter what promises or pretty words she is given. She does not trust when good things happen to her, therefore she tries to keep her distance from Amell. And poor Amell just doesn’t understand this thing called love, that’s why I said he’s fun. Oh, to watch him struggle with jealousy, tender feelings, and all-out exasperation is a joy!

There are some inconsistencies in this story, but nothing major. The chemistry between Nyssa and Amell more than makes up for any slips here and there. Watching these two learn what it means to love and be loved, full stop, no strings attached, was glorious.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the seventh book in the series, and I have to admit I am a little behind, but the last couple ensured that I was very excited to get my hands on this new release! I definitely would recommend that you read them in order, as the ongoing storylines build and develop in each installment. There is however a sufficient, cleverly intertwined recap on the story to date at the beginning of the book which just prompts the memory as to what the state of play is in the series to date!

Nyssa has had a pretty rubbish life to date, and it is about to get a whole lot worse as she is standing on the bridge in hell waiting to be pushed into the Crimson river ... game over! Instead thanks to her feistiness and the King of the Underworld who is attracted to her verve, her life (or rather death) changes in ways she would have never imagined!

Drawing from the adventures of the previous book where Amell goes to the rescue of his daughter, Thalia, we find this has caused the displeasure of the gods. Now he will reign in the midnight realm, and how he acts proves him to be dark, yet good. It takes Nyssa a little longer to understand what is going on in the underworld, and much longer to trust - but it is fun to see the world through her eyes, and to give Amell a reason to go on, now that his planned life has taken a different turn.

The chemistry between the two of them is based not just on carnal lust, but also a meeting of their minds and humour. Amell soon knows what led to her arrival in hell, but gives her the space to explain and the chance to rise above her past and remember the transition she had already started to a new life.

Sexy, fun, intense and conducted in a world of magic which has rules and ways which she does not understand, Nyssa and Amell light up the page - and the epilogue is everything any romantic could want.

While I have enjoyed this series and the fantastic worlds created by Sawyer Bennett in the Chronicles of the Stone Veil, Amell is by far my favorite creature of them all.

While we met Amell in prior stories, we never truly got his background. All we knew was that he was a study in contrasts. He was the right hand of the evil creature intent on destroying the world. But in the end he helped annihilate her. He was responsible for the captivity of a human who was imprisoned in the underworld. But he cared for her and made her life livable. He is the most powerful dark fae. But he has a soft spot for his daughter. Amell has so many aspects to him that he can’t help be fascinating.

As the newly appointed King of the Underworld, Amell is now tasked with judging those departed souls who have been sent to his realm. While they all have done something in their life to warrant ending up standing before him, it is still his duty to determine whether there is anything worth saving. Usually there isn’t. But when Nyssa winds up before him, still battling and not cowering, he finds himself intrigued by her fire and spirit. Saving her from eternal damnation in the Crimson River, he keeps her as a prisoner to serve in his castle, but finds that she has captivated him and piqued his curiosity.

I loved watching Amell fall in love for the first time in eternity. He is the most feared dark fae, capable of destruction and atrocities. And yet that is not the creature we get to know. Instead we find a dark angel burdened with responsibility, ruling over an entire world of evil that is trying to make what was once a literal hell into a habitable place. The fire and brimstone has been transformed into a midnight realm of starry skies. And the dark winged creature has become a ruler that cares about his people as he learns to love a mortal woman.

Sawyer Bennett has continued to amaze me with this multi-faceted fantasy world that exists just below the surface of reality. It is so clear and so easy for me to picture, and I can’t wait to read about more of the creatures that inhabit this realm.

The Midnight Realm is a phenomenal, fantasy romance that check marked all my boxes! An extraordinary standalone novel set in the Chronicles of the Stone Veil series, this author takes the reader on a spellbinding, whirlwind journey complete with intrigue, action, romance, and even a bit of humor. This author excels when it comes to creating a fantastical world with such rich and detailed descriptions that the reader can easily visualize themselves in the Underworld. Amell, the king of the Underworld is scrumptious and swoonworthy. I adored his character! Nyssa is a spunky, fearless human who ensnares his attention. I wasn’t too sure about her character at first but I came to admire her resilience, bravery, and kind-hearted soul. These two together are dynamite and the author perfectly illustrates the connection between this unlikely pair. The storytelling is captivating and I found myself fully immersed in the Midnight Realm and enthralled with Amell and Nyssa.

This novel is Book 7 in The Chronicles of the Stone Veil series. The books are interconnected, but it can be read as a standalone. Having read all the previous novels in the series, I was thrilled to be reunited with some of the characters from the previous books. This book is fast paced with excellent character development and it kept me entertaining from beginning to end. I truly believe that this author is talented when it comes to writing fantasy romances and it is my hope that she continues to write stories set within this world. Overall rating: 4.5 stars

I read an early version of this book. I voluntarily leave this review where all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

I have SO MUCH LOVE for this series!

"She's just so...anti-Underworld. Nyssa brings a freshness to an otherwise stale and mundane life."

Amell is the King of the Underworld. He doesn't love his position but he's rising to the challenge, especially when it comes to sitting in judgement of the souls that get sent to Hell. Nyssa McKnight has lead a hellish existence and fuller expected that her worthless life meant she was exempt from Heaven. When she finds herself in the Underworld, she has nothing left to live for and couldn't give a damn if she ended up in the Crimson River. However, her feisty attitude piques Amell's interest, and she's given a reprieve. A reprieve that eventually finds her in the King's bed. Amell's growing feelings for the human are tempered by the threat of an uprising and the danger it poses to Nyssa.

"I want to bind my life to yours, and yours to mine, and I want to live until the end of time with you."

Oh my gosh! This was a fabulous, fantastical read! I was whisked away into the Midnight Realm and found myself caught up in Amell and Nyssa's growing relationship and hot encounters. Amell might have been one of the Original Fallen and, in essence evil, but he had a tender heart buried deep within his chest. I loved his sense of fairness but also his all-consuming protectiveness of Nyssa, and what he was willing to do to keep her safe. Nyssa was badass! My heart ached at how little she valued her life, but I adored how she slowly came to enjoy her life in the Underworld and put stock in it. Her happiness was heartwarming and I loved her sweet shows of affection for Amell. This was such an engrossing read, rich in imagery, spiked with sexy hotness and heartmelting romance.
