*Please note this is not a novel, but a companion book for Reacher fans* NOW UPDATED TO INCLUDE A Q&A WITH LEE CHILD AND ALAN RITCHSON, STAR OF PRIME TV'S HIT SERIES, REACHER
My name is Jack Reacher. No middle name, no address. I'm a man with a rule. People leave me alone, I leave them alone. If they don't, I don't.
As every Reacher fan knows, you don't have to break the rules if you make the rules.
Rule 1. NEVER VOLUNTEER FOR ANYTHING Rule 2: BE ON YOUR FEET AND READY Rule 3. SHOW THEM WHAT THEY'RE MESSING WITH Rule 4: DON'T BREAK THE FURNITURE Rule 5: IF IN DOUBT, DRINK COFFEE
'There's only one Jack Reacher. Accept no substitutes' MICK HERRON
This is one of those books you will keep coming back to. It’s essentially a guidebook based on the Jack Reacher character created by Lee Child, divided into sections that focus on a particular theme, for example, ‘Conquer your fear’ , ‘Dogs’, and ‘Man walks into a bar- the rules’. Essential stuff.
If you’re a Jack Reacher fan you will appreciate this book a great deal and certain ‘rules’ or quotes will remind you of the stories you have read. If you haven’t read any Reacher books, you’d definitely want to after reading this book.
In addition to the rules, hints and tips, the book also has facts about the military and law enforcement which I enjoyed reading.
I could list several favourite parts of this book but I guess one of them would be from the ‘confronting death’ section; ‘The meaning of life is that it ends’.
There’s also an interview at the end where Lee Child interviews Jack Reacher, a.k.a Alan Ritchson from the new Amazon series. Then it sort of turns into Alan interviewing Lee! Lee knows who the real Reacher is (It’s not Tom Cruise).
A good read. Funny, wise, kick-ass. We should all live by Reachers Rules, but hopefully we won’t get ourselves into half the situations he does!
Reachers Rules. A fun little novelty book for fans of Jack Reacher. Not much of a story in this one which isn't usually my kind of reading but it's a fun book for fans of the character.
Now this is basically a book from the mind of Reacher himself as it's written by him and goes through his Rules for fighting and surviving certain situations. It's a fun quirky little book that you can read in a day which I did while having a break from Everything's Eventual whilst traveling.
Like I said not much of a story in this one and it isn't my usual kind of book which is a little disappointing for me personally but still a lot of fun for Reacher fans both the book and the TV show.
This books also made me realise how perfect Alan Ritchson is for this role because everything he says in this book I can see him saying in the tv show and it's a funny read. Would definitely recommend for fans of the character but don't go in expecting a proper novel.
Verdict ⭐⭐⭐⭐. A fun little quirky book but not a proper novel. But a good read for fans
Having read 17 Reacher books in their original publication sequence, I have arrived in 2012, still stuck in the recent past. We have now 30 novels in print.
Published in 2012 as “Jack Reacher’s Rules”, this is a collection of thoughts, sayings and life lessons that our protagonist has finely honed into rules and standards to live by. These are not new to a reader as they can be identified as quotes, lifted from the books or derived from Reacher’s approach to life.
This copy that I read was revised and republished in 2022 and now includes an interview between author Lee Child and actor Alan Ritchson the star of Prime’s Reacher series.
Time has indeed marched on. Reacher is more successful and familiar to new and wider audiences. I have deferred watching the TV shows until I am up to date with the written narrative. Lots to read still, including those short stories that have extended the literary journey.
Books like this are a treat. They cement and reaffirm the uniqueness of the character that we perceive to be Jack Reacher. Evidence why we pick up the next book or buy the latest hardback release. Why we are drawn to and stick with this wonderful antihero and binge watch episodes on tele.
I loved this book. It reflects the Reacher I love and reminds me why I spend time sharing his journey in print and onto our TV sets and movie screens. A must for any Reacher fan, a reference point rather than a prayer missal. A fun collection of a lifestyle as opposed to a political dogma like “The Little Red Book” of the sayings Chairman Mao Tse-Tung.
A novel, even at over 500 pages, is an event, a literary joy. But it is quickly read and mostly forgotten. “Reacher’s Rules” is a keepsake, a book of treasures. A familiar friend and potentially a faithful companion to read and remember and delight in this interesting and resourceful character.
Let me start by saying I'm a huge fan of Lee Child and his Reacher series. But this book slightly perturbed me and fortunately i got it on loan from my local library otherwise i'd have felt that i'd wasted nearly £10. This is the second book of this ilk - the other being a Phillip Pullman glossary on his Drk Material trilogy - I've read which seems like a waste of money and my time somewhat in reading it. If you like Reacher then you will know all this and it will of little help in furthering your understanding of the series. Unfortunately - like the Pullman book - it feels like yet another means of making money either for the publishers or even worse the author. Sorry not my real cup of tea and fortunately since I loaned it from a library not cost me anything apart from a hour or so.
