Jen knows she's a serial dater, but is she a serial killer?
Jen Beeny is leaving her turbulent past behind and now it's time to start living. Or at least she's trying to. Between her dead-end job, live-in-landlord and disastrous dates, life in London is not quite turning out as she'd planned.
When her dates start to go missing, Jen is determined to ignore the sense of dread building inside her. She continues on with life...until the police come knocking. All signs suggest Jen is the culprit, and the internet sleuths are gaining traction. But Jen didn't do anything wrong, did she?
Charlotte grew up in Middlesbrough, before migrating to London for a more tropical climate, and to work as a terrorism insurance broker. When not telling anyone who will listen how warm it is, or the correct way to pronounce ‘bath’, she enjoys zhuzhing up the more mundane aspects of being a twenty-something-year-old by putting a fictitious, killer spin on them. She can be found on instragram @biglandbooks
Five people are missing or dead and Jennifer Beeny has dated them all and so the police have reason to believe she is responsible. Is Jen a serial killer or just so darned unlucky to be in the wrong place at the wrong time several times over??? Is she guilty or telling the police the truth, a liar or truthful? Jen is the narrator and how reliably only time will tell
This is a hard one to review as it’s a bit of a game of two halves! I really like the premise of the novel and particularly like the tone it’s written in which ranges from ironic to darkly humorous. Jen is really good company as a narrator and I end up liking her because she’s fearless and funny. The characterisation is generally good even though some are not very likeable such as her landlord Bob who is seriously sleazy and repellent making your fresh crawl, you can picture him all too clearly! Sadly!
The dialogue ranges from being extremely good and vibrant, capturing the London social scene to some that makes you wince! The novel starts well then it seems to fall flat and at times we get way too much information! In a couple of places I contemplate giving up but I’m glad I don’t because it definitely ramps up in the second half and settles in to becoming a very entertaining read. It’s twisted that’s for sure as you try to guess who is behind the shenanigans and I do partly guess!
Overall, for a debut it shows plenty of promise and I think the author has loads of potential in the darkly humorous bracket! I like the book cover too.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Embla Books for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review
The main character makes decision after decision that makes absolutely no sense. God, I'm sick of books with female leads that barely have half a brain. Jen spends the whole book pining after a guy who is clearly not interested while sleeping her way through her limited friend group. Each person she sleeps with shows up in the Thames or vanishes and at no point does she consider that she has a stalker or something similar.
There was so much about this book that had me wondering WTF I don't even know where to start.
Jen obtains evidence she's innocent but doesn't go to the police, instead, she goes directly to the one person who is so obviously involved, she's practically wearing a neon sign over her head pointing it out.
Jen gets messages from people she knows are missing and presumed dead asking her to meet them in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night and she not only doesn't think it's suspicious, but she also goes to meet them.
Jen attempts to break into Seb's apartment. Why? And then the cop catches her and takes her to lunch? lolwut? and as if this situation isn't silly enough, the cop then gets sexual with the prime suspect right after catching her in the act of breaking and entering.
and while I'm talking about the cops, they have people who are missing, presumed dead whose mobile phones are not only switched on but actively being used but they don't bother to try and track them. But a laptop that's stolen they'll immediately track (lol) and send a dozen police out to find it.
At no point does this dozey cow even consider getting a lawyer. She was arrested for being a serial killer and her response to that is to break into one of the victim's apartments, meet dead people in a park in the middle of the night and steal her landlord's laptop in the hopes some random guy in a phone repair shop to magically figure out the password.
I can't even talk about Bob. Everything about that whole situation was nonsensical.
2 stars is being very generous.

"Discover the hottest thriller of the summer perfect for fans of You."
That was part of the blurb on Netgalley...... Which is perfect because I loved "You" and who doesn't want to discover the hottest thriller of the summer? Sign me up! This is a thriller written by a debut author: Charlotte Bigland and I dug right in.
In this one we have Jen Beeny who, having a turbulent past, has moved to London and taken a crappy job as a receptionist. While building her life back she goes on date after date. Until everyone of her dates either winds up dead or missing. So as the tagline of the books says, "Is she a serial dater or serial killer?" The police, and crime buffs soon zero in on her and her connection to all the victims.
What rocks: The main character: Jen Beeny. She is totally badass and her snarky thoughts are on full display. While she is going on all her dates the man (or woman) would be talking to her and her thoughts would literally be, "Fuck my life does this guy really think he's serious?" Totally hilarious.
Also Bigland nails life in London. The dialogue and locations were spot on. You really had a sense of what it's like to live in London. Plus the pace and length of this booky is perfect. Great flow and my PDF file had it around 250 pages which is fantastic. Who likes to read a brick where you forget what happened in the beginning by the time you get to the end? Hint: NOBODY! Ok, maybe just me.
What sucks: So it's date after date and while entertaining they do get somewhat repetitive but that may be just me as well. Plus the ending....... Ok, I have very mixed feelings about it. It was good, and I didn't predict what happened but sometimes you read a book and just want the author, "To just go there!" Just do it and go full shock and awe and blow this thing out of the water. She didn't really do that. It was still good.
So is this the hottest book of the summer? It's not the coldest one and you will be entertained by Jen Beeny. I say go for it!
Jen's life is thrown into turmoil when every person she has dated since moving to London either disappears or turns up dead. Jen knows she must be being set up - she couldn't possibly be killing these people, can she?
This book started slow but quickly picked up pace and had me gripped. I loved how the story started giving little hints, making me question and really think who it could be. Brilliant book that's absolutely worth the read!
I devoured it! Especially as the narrator on Audible - Rebecca Tebbett - was so fantastic at creating this world. The book has a lot of characters, which Tebbett introduced with ease. I was so on board with all of it. So addictive and well written.
Really Really Really enjoyed reading this. Took 3 days and I couldn't put it down. Easy to read. Great story line that has you guessing who done it right to the end Thanks for the opportunity to read and review. Looking forward to more from Charlotte Bigland and Embla Books.
I'm not a fan of chick lit or drama stories and am more of a thriller/ domestic noir girl but I loved the sound if the premise and thought it sounded such a fresh and modern take on the old thriller genre. THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING!! I was so confident about who was behind it all the entire time I was reading it and I didn't not see the final twists coming at all. It's so relatable and realistic that I just loved it. It's such a perfect view on modern dating and what it feels like to be a young woman in this day and age. Plus it's hillarious! She is so funny and again, rare to be chuckling away to yourself whilst reading a thriller but it's just got so much humanity in it that it's possible one of the most realistic domestic noirs I've come across. The characters were all so unique and well rounded. The pace keeps up the entire way through the book and yeah, even if you're not a fan of character led, drama types, hopefully like me you'll be surprised to find this is the exception. No doubt because it is so accurate and realistic that its not glossing over reality for the sake of the plot. I was literally up until 3am getting it finished and don't regret a second. It's impossible to put down! Highly recommended
Charlotte Bigland's "It's Not Me, It's You" is a gripping debut thriller, one that lures you to reconsider your bedtime hours. Jen Beeny is a 23-year-old woman who has recently moved to London after a family tragedy. She decides to embrace adventure by going on dates with five people. One by one, they begin to disappear, and the level of suspicion gradually intensifies. As an investigation progresses, there is a concrete commonality - Jen was not only the person they dated but the last person they saw. Is Jen Beeny, the protagonist concealing her identity as a secret killer, or is it someone else? Jen is far from a perfect character with persistent indecisiveness and emotional expression, but she is highly persistent. You will either love or hate her. The dialogue is hugely refreshing with humourous self-musings, and the supporting characters are cunning and well fleshed out. As this is a sole narration and a linear timeline, I devoured every page. The ending caught me by surprise, and the puzzle pieces connected well. A 4-star read!
Thank you to NetGalley and Embla Books for giving me an ARC. This honest review is left voluntarily.
Highly recommend this book! I was hooked on it the whole time, and I particularly enjoyed the twist at the end. I liked the attention to detail throughout the story and the characters are very relatable. Looking forward to reading more books written by Charlotte Bigland.
The main character was unbelievably stupid, desperate and unreliable. Every choice she made had me wanting to yell at my kindle. The story took a while to pick up speed and the end was not worth the read, in my opinion. Might be good for some but I did not enjoy.
Constant battle whether I should go to bed or read just one more chapter - one of those books you simply cannot put down once you start.
Vivid characters with distinctive personalities where you can imagine their gestures while talking and taste of clothing etc as you follow Jen Beeny’s conversation (and observation) with them – no one would hate to imagine hot men in nice and fitted suits!
Brilliantly capturing the fun, opportunistic and vibrant lifestyle in the city of London, the book also exposes the brutal truth of people feeling lonely and lost in a huge city: the constant drinking to find a sense of belonging while feeling numb and hook-ups to feel connected with a stranger – an experience most can relate to.
The most engaging bit is each chapter brings in more unsolved mystery to Jen Beeny’s story yet also exposes some facts in tiny crumbs – the only way to find the answers is to carry on reading!
And of course, the story ended on a high with a twist and leaving you wondering ‘but I’m SURE I didn’t miss any important hints’.
Unlike most books where some sub-lines are never explained, the author made sure to give a close to each sub-character and line – very satisfying to have a book where you feel complete as all your questions are answered and not left hanging.
What an unexpected and delicious treat Yet again I was dubiously perusing the murder mystery thrillers in search of something to keep me going until my next pre-order was released and I came upon this little beauty. It grabbed me from the get go and was just so superbly written that I could tell I was in safe hands and in for an excellent adventure. I liked the protagonist Jen and loved the way that she just plunged in and did the very tempting but wrong thing so many times. It was funny, touching and gave an interesting insight into living in London which I enjoyed so much as many years since I last visited and it brought it all back to me. Loved also the side theme of dating and twenty something life The plot was excellent - so very many twists and turns and had me completely fooled so many times. Perhaps the reveal was a little far fetched but it was a helluva ride to get there so I was happy to suspend disbelief just a bit after such an intriguing and absorbing mystery.
Got the audiobook too and narration was great and all in all it was a 5 star experience, sad its over now but I am really excited to have found another superbly talented author and seamless story teller to add to my list of favourites.
Can't wait for the next Charlotte Bigland thriller as this really was such a 5 star treat
It's Not Me, It's You by Charlotte Bigland is the author's debut novel. The story is about Jen Beeny, who leaves her turbulent past behind and starts living a new life. But her dates start to go missing, and the internet sleuths and the police are looking at Jen as the culprit. Jen is a likable character and is funny at times.
Positive: I liked how London came alive in the book and made you feel as if you were right there. The author did an excellent job of showing London life. That is a plus for the author's writing and the story.
Negatives: I felt there were too many unnecessary descriptions and inner musings that distracted me from the heart of the story and took me away from getting involved in the plot and characters at times. The ending also fell a bit flat and was not the "Oh, my goodness" kind of moment.
Overall, it was a pleasant read and a good debut novel. I would check out other books by this author.

This is a totally gripping read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.
Wow, what a stunning debut - one of those psychological thrillers that made me gutted to finish!!
The story is that of Jen, 23 and newly settled in London. Jen’s first year dating experiences and landlord hassles are entertaining enough in themselves, but then throw into the mix that all of her London dates end up either murdered or missing and I couldn’t turn those pages fast enough!!
Nothing else to say except READ THIS BOOK!!
My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.
I really enjoyed this writer's style of writing. The banter between the characters made me laugh out loud a few times even though this was a thriller. Entertaining read with a good twist at the end.
I can't believe so many people read this book. Got fooled by the title like I did? Who wrote "an addictive"..and.. etc by the title ? So false, I could barely finish this book.
First proper book I’ve read since Mr. Nice! But from start to finish it was truly gripping! The story telling structure was superb along with the intricate details about each and everyone of the characters, making you feel like you were really part of this friendship group and living in Jen’s head. This book includes many laugh out loud moments, particularly with the awkward sit in landlord which is the bane of the protagonists life! The book keeps you guessing until the very end. With many twists along the way and with a wholesome and heartfelt ending, I could not recommend this book enough! Especially to young adults in a new city who need a laugh and can at least think whilst reading ‘well my life in this new city could be worse’. 5 star read for sure!
An incredibly stupid female protagonist who keeps making idiotic decisions and putting herself in danger at every turn possible. A creepy disgusting landlord nobody in their right mind would put up with. Every man this girl dated was a jerk or a creep or a sleazebag. She knew only a handful of people in London and she slept with almost all of them! Even these were ok to put up with for the sake of the storyline but the repeated graphic descriptions of disgusting stuff like the color and contents of vomit was really really really off-putting and totally unnecessary. This book is full of horrible or dumb people doing unbelievably dumb or cruel things. Reading this was a mistake.

The only thing disappointing about this book is that it’s the only one the author has written. My goodness Bigland knows how to write a captivating and hilarious lead character. I could be best friends with Jen, I love her! I would even love to see her in more books but that’s not up for me to decide. The twists were really well done and I kept thinking I knew who it was; I would be sure, then I’d change my mind after another chapter.
Bigland did a great job with the reveal made me wanting more more more Jen Beeny!
Damn you Goodreads for shutting down halfway through my review. Like I can remember what I wrote! This was about less thriller than I expected and was almost ho hum. All the characters were creepy in their own way and who did it could have been any of them really. Sure, there were dead bodies. Sure, there were missing bodies. But it just wasn’t overly thrilling. I finished it because I was almost done and could sure use the book count. But I’m not sure I’ll look up the next book.
Loved this book. Few chapters in and I couldn’t put it down. For a debut, I’m shocked this is honestly one of my favourite reads, for anyone loving a murder mystery with a modern London twist. Need the Netflix adaptation asap!! Couldn’t recommend enough
Great story line and believable characters , a lot of twists and turns that keep you saying to yourself just one more charter Thank you Charlotte Bigland 10/10 and 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 highly recommend this book and amazing narration 🙂
4.5 Great debut book !! Kept me guessing. I really didn’t love any of the characters but I think that their flaws were very human and genuine so you could look past and understand. I didn’t see the twist coming at the end and think that it was executed really well!
This author owes me 4 h ours of my life, and I tried so hard to stick with this manic convoluted plot. Red herrings flying around everywhere, characters as wooden as Pinocchio.
