National bestselling and award-winning author Joanna Campbell Slan was born in Jacksonville, Florida, but she grew up in a small town in Indiana. After graduating from Ball State University with a degree in journalism, she worked as a newspaper reporter, a newspaper ad salesperson, a television talk show host, a college teacher, a public relations professional, and a motivational speaker. In that capacity, she was named by Sharing Ideas Magazine as “one of the top 25 speakers in the world.”
Slan's work has appeared in five of the New York Times Bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul books, and one of those became a television show. She is the author of nearly 80 books, nonfiction and fiction, including Death of a Schoolgirl, which won the 2013 Daphne du Maurier Award of Excellence.
Joanna's personal essays have appeared in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, and one was made into a television program on the Pax Network. The college textbook Joanna wrote—Using Stories and Humor: Grab Your Audience—has been praised as an invaluable resource by Benjamin Netanyahu’s speechwriter and endorsed by Toastmasters, International.
RT Book Reviews has called Joanna “one of mystery’s rising stars.” Her first novel—Paper, Scissors, Death—was an Agatha Award finalist. It features Kiki Lowenstein, a spunky single mom who lives in St. Louis. The sixth book in that series will be released Summer 2013.
Kirkus Reviews has said, “Slan’s mysteries are most valuable for the well-developed characters and the issues they raise.” RT Book Reviews has said, “Kiki is so darn entertaining that she’ll keep readers hooked.” A series of short stories featuring Kiki are available on Kindle.
Joanna’s newest series—The Jane Eyre Chronicles—began with Death of a Schoolgirl (Berkley) and continues with the release of Death of a Dowager. The series features Charlotte Brontë’s classic heroine Jane Eyre as an amateur sleuth.
As “Lila Dare,” Joanna has penned the fourth book in the Southern Beauty Shop series—Wave Good-bye.
Joanna is married to David Slan. The Slans live on Jupiter Island, Florida.
I'll try to avoid spoilers!Age of daughter 'fluctuated', as did length of pregancy. What happened to Aunt Lorraine & the author? Died, moved? All of a sudden the property is empty & conveniently available for rental. Was the adoption successful? Was there a wedding? Where did Margit go? Did Kiki join the Miss Fits? Where's the vile mother & how did she miraculously tame the mother-in-law? When did Robbie retire & who is in charge now? Is the business going to relocate & continue? I think I need at least another 4-6 books!
The loss of a star has to do with a couple things. First, what happened to the writer and millionairess? Did they just die or fly off into the wild blue yonder? And how did Kiki and Detweiler come to fully own the writer’s entire property? Plus, who, if not Eric’s millionaire “aunt,” is paying Brony? Obviously, Detweilor and Kiki can’t afford her. And I’m still not sure how I like Kiki being so dismissive of others’ beliefs, which seem to be “out there,” yet being so proud of her ecumenical family. I especially liked the turtle parade!
Kiki Lowenstein-Detwiler is an awesome character! She’s real and human and this set is hard to put down each day. She’s not perfect but is my kind of mother and friend, no matter if the kids are two legged or four. She always had her friends back and will fight for her kids and friends and does allow them room to make their own decisions. She even gets a little jealous of new friends but I think it’s going to open her up to new adventures with new, strong friends !
Books 14 and 15 had good story lines and interesting information on scrapbooking. Also believable characters. Book 16 bored me to death; way too much crafting specifics, like I care. Just an endless saga of how busy Kiki is with all those children, live and dead spouses, friends at the store, the store. Good grief.
I loved te family connections loved see how each character grew through their travails..even loved the ain't character despite her deficits Ike stubbornness.. Great book. Fine author
Kiki is a mother and craft store owner with a propensity to find trouble. She and her detective husband have a stellar record of solving crimes. Fascinating reads.
