Never Give up. Life never works out according to your dreams. Matt Teeson and Tate Matthews long-term friends and partners in a ranch in New Mexico want to live in peace and grow the ranch. George Hamilton wants to become the biggest rancher in New Mexico, he needs Matt’s ranch to achieve this. Julia Hamilton, George’s daughter, has trained as a doctor. She wants to serve the population around Willow Creek. No men, including Matt and George, believe a woman can possibly be a doctor. This dooms her practice from the start. Mangas Mescal the Apache chief wants to preserve his tribe’s lifestyle of living off the land. He sees Tate and George as obstacles to this. Not everyone will achieve their goals, and not everyone will survive. Life should be easier. Why can’t everyone get along and not be so greedy? Matt thought as he looked for movement in the sparse yellow grass over the sights of his Winchester. “How're you doing there, Tate?” He asked of his best friend and partner without taking his eyes off where he had last seen the Apache. “I can’t help you until the Apache have gone.” Tate grunted. “And I'm going to be no help to you.”
Louis L'mour and a sassy clean romance. The author, who chooses to to write under a pseudonym, tries hard to give something to everyone as she includes a lady doctor, a lady wannabe lawyer who manages her own business, an Apache tribe, and a would be land baron who thinks he should own the whole territory. The book is long, but it did not cause me to lose interest. I love the sheriff who is anxious to be fair, the young ranchers who are carving out a place for themselves, and the implication the everyone should try to get along from many of the characters. The character that shines through on many of the townspeople is heartwarming. I would recommend this book to others who enjoy reading about the settling of the American West. I gave it four stars because I felt there were too many typographical errors a good proofreader would have caught.
There are several times the author transposes things from the 20th century into this book, that is set in the 19th century. Most notable are the occasions when the sheriff reads the prisoner’s legal rights at the time of arrest. I’ve read many stories of this genre I have never read anything about the 1800s that had a sheriff reading legal rights to a prisoner. So it’s a bit strange to me to read them in this book and a few other things but not worth mentioning here.
I don't agree with the "fifth grader" description, but there needed to be a better flow in the script. The story was excellent, giving the reader a different tone of a western. The characters were well developed. I read a lot of different authors and would like to add Mr. Craft to my list.
I liked the characters and got to know them.what didn't like was the wording of the book or maybe that isn't the right word to describe the language use.I felt sometime I was reading at a third grade or less level.it was struggle to finish the book at times because of it. The premise of the story I wanted to know the ending. Authors other books were not like that.
As expected and happily found; here is an excellent and exciting read, honestly depicting the real lifestyle of the older west for our ancestors. It's fun to have a well written story that is also so exciting that it is easy to stay up too late and miss some sleep. Thank you, AC
Great story and we'll written by a great writer. Not your typical western, a very creative plot that held you, made it hard to put the book. THANK you it was enjoyable to read
What we have here is a well planned plot and solid characters. What we're missing is tied up loose ends, correct commas, and editing. Our dear author also needs to stop putting African hares in the American West, and to not use 20th century words, phrases and practices.
Struggles of being a woman doctor and aspiring lawyer were very real in the Old West. Rivalry among ranchers was rampant. Reluctant romances. All this made the book interesting and engaging. I enjoyed it!
For non native western writer, he writes a good yarn. Authentic and believable. He doesn't try to inappropriate firearms and other ways of trying to more cowboy than he is. Gonna read more of his works.
I started this book two days ago and could not hardy put it down. I had other things to do that could not be put off. I am retired Law Enforcement field and enjoyed this book. I look forward to reading the next book written by AC Craft.
This book was very well written with many twists and turns. When you think you have it figured out it makes another twist. I really liked the book. I also bought #2. Hope it is as good as #1.
I like many genres my favorite being early 1900 mysteries, cozy mysteries but lately I've tired of them so came back West. This is an awesome read. Has a bad guy, good guys, A little romance and more enjoy I did!
I felt like for me, at least, it was a little too wordy at times. Too much description. I get anxious for the action sometimes. The banter back and forth was funny. And good won out over evil - which is mandatory. So all in all a pretty good book.
I truly loved this book. The storyflowed so effortlessly. Al characters strong. From what i can tell,it appears the author researched the info thoroughly. I look, forward to the next book
Its amazing how good men that are smart can turn so evil over power and money. Evil never wins as this author shows. Very good read and I highly recommend it.
I enjoyed the first book so I have already purchased the other three. I will start the next book after dinner! Can't wait to see the next chapters of Julia and Matt's lives.
This one had a good storyline, but the way it was printed made it hard for me to keep my place. I did enjoy it though! Maybe it was a beginning start for this author as the other works I've read didn't do this.
This was a good western with an appropriate element of romance. It had plenty of action and suspense and was a well developed tale. The story line kept you wanting to see what happens next thus it was hard to put down. I would definitely recommend it!
