Argh. This series started off sooo strong, but this book was kind of boring. I'm getting pretty tired of these characters just making endless terrible plans and then being shocked when they don't work out. It makes them all seem pretty dumb. The smut was good, but I'm bored of the story--it's going very slow and taking too long to wrap up.
I also hated that they kept calling the behemeth and the leviathon the "the villainous duo," "big bads," or "monstrous duo" with "lackeys" and "minions." Those terms just made me laugh every time because they sounded stupid.
Only one book left for Quinn and her men to save the world. No pressure or anything! Quinn is not only coming in to her powers but she's learning to harness them and discovering the unique gifts her powers give her. Joined also by Rollick, her guy's shadow demon boss, the gang is on the hunt for shadow beings openly attacking humans. Simply showing themselves is a big No No so it's clear things have taken a turn for the worse as more and more demons become pawns and humans are killed. This book was a little more exciting for me and I'm glad things were a bit more upbeat, I mean technically they are also running for their lives but... semantics! There is more plot development along with finally adding Rollick to the harem so things get rather spicy here and there. Time will tell how and if they'll manage to save the world and especially Quinn who's heart is still on its own countdown.
I thought I was getting tired of this series. But third book in and I still need to know what happens! What makes our mortal reluctant sorcerer so powerful! Will she get that happy ending!
I kind of want her to discover shadow in her ancestry and heal up her favourite tentacle lover so he can use those tentacles even more than he does already 😏 She is no Ruby, but she's just as strong and tough in her own survival mark this world way. And boy does she have some very very very hot steamy moments. Although the author always manages to make the smut tender and loving, even with lube and tentacles and a double D*cough*...well yea...even with all the extra loving I want my own monsters to play and love ❤️ 3.8 stars
Defended by Demons by Eva Chase is an urban fantasy romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Amber Lee Connors and Aiden Snow. This is the third book in The Heart of a Monster series.
I love Eva's books! I was pulled in from the first chapter and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I am loving the chemistry between Quinn, Torrent, Lance, Crag, and Rollick. I really enjoyed getting all of their points of views throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.
The book ended on a great cliffhanger that left me begging for more. I can't wait to dive into the final book in the series Hailed by Fiends.
Aiden and Amber did an amazing job on the narration. They both really know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.
I would recommend this series if you're looking for an urban fantasy romances, why choose romances, or romantic suspense.
This series is going downhill for me. I feel like we aren't progressing at all in the plot. They keep trying out these plans and failing. I'm just confused on why shes so important. They're still after her for some reason. Because she has the strongest sorcerers heart? All a sorcerer can do is control the shadowkind. That's all. She cant use her powers to save herself or anything else. Her powers are a little disappointing.
I'm still wary about Rollick. I don't really feel their connection yet. He's by far the most morally black out of all of them and have done some not questionable stuff to her. But apparently all is good since he decided to be nicer and she's attracted to him 🤷🏻♀️
Defeated by Demons is the third installment within The Heart of a Monster series. I'm just going to say it loud and proud, they finally did it. Not only did Quinn and Rollick get together but we also see them ALL get together. Seriously, my heart was so freaking happy.
The only thing holding me back is the unknown about Quinn and her freaking heart. There's betrayal and drama happening as well. I'm not a huge fan of the other sorcerers because they seem like huge dicks. I also don't like how they willingly kill innocent people either.
In the end, that little cliffhanger has left me annoyed because I wanted all the answers tied up with a huge bow. Maybe I will get that with the next book? If not, I will riot.
Another great read in this series. I was hoping that with Quinn & Rollick alone that something might happen between them. Quinn now reunited with Crag, Lance and Torrent need all the prayers since something they don’t know wants Quinn dead. Finally finding answers they have a plan to take out their enemy but it might not be that easy. I can’t wait too read how this series will end. Great story with amazing characters.
Another brilliant story in this amazing series. Quinn has a lot to learn about herself in this episode and must trust Rollick to help her through. Lots of ups and downs in this trying adventure will keep readers on the edge of their seat. Enjoyable read. I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Book 3 is my favorite so far! Loved every word! More action, more stakes, and more steam. Eva has definitely written some amazing characters and an incredible world.
I am hooked on this series. That ending has me wanting the next one right now!! I need to know what happens. I love the new member of their group! The narrators were fabulous!
My review is written voluntarily after listening to the audio version of this book.
This book picks up the story shortly after the startling ending of the second book when Quinn using her magic compelled Crag, Lance and Torrent to leave her side for their own protection. This left Quinn alone with Rollick, can he be trusted? Rollick has a plan which he hopes will lead to more information, but what they learn is almost more than Quinn can handle.
The more time they spend alone without the other guys around the more Rollick allows Quinn to see the man as well as the demon but in doing so he begins to realise that there is much more to Quinn than he thought possible, Whilst they are fighting their battles with evil and learning more about who is controlling the shadow-kind Crag, Lance and Torrent are tracking Quinn waiting for her magic to wear off so that they can return to her.
When the team, now reunited confront one-half of their enemy they realise they have a bigger battle than ever to fight going forward. Roll on book four!
The narration by Amber Lee Connors and Aiden Snow is excellent, I love how Amber brings out Quinn's vulnerability and her strength and how Aiden manages to bring to life all the shadow-kind creatures we meet. I especially love the vulnerability he brings to all her monstrous men.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE HEART OF A MONSTER SERIES AS A WHOLE.
Eva Chase has done it again! The characters, the plot, the suspense, the spice🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️, it was all chefs kiss.🤌🏼 I don’t know what it is about this author and her books. It’s almost like she mixes all the vibes I loved about the paranormal YA books I read in my late teens/early20s with all of the spice and adult content I enjoy in my books now.
It’s been 6 months since I first read Flirting With Monsters. I’ve read it a second time since then and it still crosses my mind at least once a week so when I found out she was coming out with another series within the same universe I just had to dive in. I was NOT disappointed.🖤
I loved Quinn and all of her monsterous men and was very excited to see Sorsha and all of her shadowkind lovers as well. I also enjoyed that one of Quinn’s relationships was more of a slow burn. It kept things even more exciting in the romance department. Not that things aren’t exciting when you have claws, tentacles, and a gargoyle with a rock hard…well you know…😉
This is a must read if you like paranormal fiction, magical adventures, monsterous men, and a brave heroine willing to sacrifice everything to save the world.
I found this book a little slower then the others, Quinn had compelled her monsters away to try and save them because they keep getting hurt.
Her and Rollick go to Norway she finds the sorcerer’s compound where they teach other sorceress and help them to ignite their powers. (She’s horrified to find out that in order to do that they kill and feed off the life essence of the shadow demon and then kill innocent humans, they believe it’s what the demons do so they must act as they act)
They find her and try to kill her she escapes, Rollick gives her his blood and now she can sense his emotions. They go back to the US and her compulsion over her men wore off and they are reunited. There’s some good spice & the guys tell her that Rollick is welcome to join since they seem to be closer to each other now.
They make plans to capture and kill the big bad shadow daemons, they kill one but the other one sucks out all the life essence of the other one to become even more powerful.
Then the book ends… I don’t know besides for finding out how the sorcerer’s get their powers and the spice, the book was kinda slow

This cover is gorgeous! I think this is one of the prettiest series I’ve ever read. Luckily, Quinn’s terrible decision from the last book doesn’t take too long to resolve: just enough time to raise the angst and longing between them all. The fourth male has joined Quinn’s harem, and I think that’s all we’ll see for this group. Those two had some budding chemistry, and it was a relief to see them settle in together. I really like Rollick’s transformation from enemy to lover. He never went too far to be irredeemable, and even when he was being a jerk, he was looking out for her. I found this instalment to be a little bit more gruesome than the others. It’s pretty brutal in parts, and you’ll know the moment when you read it. There are pretty big stakes now (not just protecting Quinn), and I guess the final book will tell how it plays out.
Human Quinn has finally accepted her fate that her new heart has given her the powers of a sorcerer and can no longer let anyone threaten everything and everyone that she cares for even if to protect the men that she loves means she has to betray them. To try and get a handle on her powers she goes into a collective of sorcerers just to find a way back to a more normal existence or die trying.
I really enjoyed this book as it started with the betrayal, the quest for knowledge, the reconciliation and the progress with some drama at various points in the story. It was also good to see that three was expanded to four as the demon who had been the boss of her lovers was included as a full member of the group. A great way for the story to end and I can't wait to find out how this is resolved in the next (last) book in the series. Easy to read and understand. Addictive to read and contains mature content.
As predicted, the trio are only gone for a short time, and those who love Lance, Crag and Torrent will still be able to keep track of them, even in the shadow realm. Quinn and Rollick's Norway trip may have been the tipping point in the battle against evil, for they learn how the sorcerer gains power, applies them, and Rollick also gets closer to Quinn.
Ever since the trip, I've been waiting for Quinn to get the trio's essences too. But it never happens. I think it is a good idea for Quinn would be stronger, and she would also know what the trio senses and if they are in immediate danger.
One more book, and we will be done with the series. How the team will defeat the Leviathan is still a question. It seems impossible with Quinn's condition and the evil's immense power in his belt. But, if you follow the other Shadowkind series, Sorsha, in her final state of power display, could easily burn the villain down! I hope Quinn will join forces with Sorsha!
Of the covers of the books, this one is arguably my favorite. I like the asymmetry of the elements to her outfit, even if it doesn't make much of an appearance in the book, but I really appreciate the art, nonetheless. Starting off its the fourth member and the female lead and the dangerous journey of seeking out intel of the sorcerers. The tension between the two was great, spicy scenes towards the end were very much needed and a great way to reunite this group as a whole. The whole dangers to this story were very well executed but could have used a little more suspense. I don't know this one just isn't hitting all that strong for me. I'm probably unintentionally rushing through this one but compared to the first book that was written so strongly and so well, this one just didn't quite reach the same level of intensity for me.
Awesome paranormal romantic mystery series Another great book in this ongoing series, the characters are coming together nicely and the threats from the evil doers are growing. The primary characters are working together to figure out who the bad guys are and how to stop them. A great blend of mystery, suspense and romantic relations with plenty of steam. I love the independence and smarts of the heroine as well as the four guys who each have their own unique personalities and baggage to deal with. I highly recommend this paranormal series, it kept me very entertained from beginning to end, enough so that I did not want to put the book down. And yes we are left with another cliffhanger and I cannot wait for the next book to see what happens.
Defeated by Demons, the third book in the Heart of a Monster series by Eva Chase picked up right where the previous books left us with Quinn and her men on yet again another roller coaster ride of emotion—but at least this time Rollick is officially with them! The question is…can they all survive what’s coming their way?!?
If you love your monster RH romances with a touch of betrayal, a pinch of drama, a splash of magic and a whole healing cup of sexy possessive beings that are drawn to a fierce heroine then this is the one for you! Just don’t expect all your questions to be answered as there’s still one more to go…
I wish I could give this a better review, alas it took me forever to get through. It was so repetitive. Rollick is wonderful as always, but there could have been so much more backstory than regurgitation of dialogue from the other books. Honestly this could’ve been book 2 and 3 combined, if edited well, and it would’ve been better. After reading the words “villainous duo” so many times, I have to take a break before the final book. I really am not sure I want to read the last book after this ending. Also does anyone else feel sorry for her poor parents? They must be really upset. I doubt we’ll ever know.
Book 3 picks up shortly after the startling ending of book 2. Quinn and Rollick have a plan to get more information, but what they learn is almost more than Quinn can handle. Rollick starts to peel away his armor and show Quinn the demon inside. He also gets to see she is more than he ever expected. In true Eva fashion, another shoe drop ending. Cue up book 4!
I received an advanced copy of this story and am voluntarily leaving my honest review. No matter how many of her stories I read, I am still surprised and kept guessing with each new one. I am such a fan.
This one also, thankfully pics up right where its predecessor left off and you’re definitely going to want to just have all of them handy. The action was pretty nonstop in this one, if it wasn’t a fight scene, it was a steamy scene, or lots of danger while plotting/planning and leading up to more fight scenes. Set in the ‘real world’ but with lots of supernaturals, this is urban fantasy done well with expert world-building.
A romance that had been very slowly brewing in previous installments picks up some steam, adding to the feels. The danger also ticks up. Excellent.
Trying to avoid spoilers, so I’m sorry for some vagueness! I’m absolutely still loving how strong, determined, and loyal Quinn & her guys are, especially to each other. Things were a little uncertain for the first half of this book until situations worked themselves out & other conversations that needed to take place did. I’m so excited how the relationships are moving but that cliffhanger has me on edge. Super glad I’ve already preordered the next one!
She wanted to protect them, but will Torrent, Crag and Lance be able to forgive Quinn, for how she did this? Rollick finally is getting some time with Quinn, will anything happen? I loved this exciting tale in this series, it had plenty of suspense, steam (with her shadowkind) and I love these characters. I just need to know what happens next. I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received, and giving my thoughts and opinions on it.
Well, I certainly didn’t expect a good portion of what happened in this book to happen. But man, am I glad that it did. Eva always does an amazing job of worldbuilding and these characters are amazing. Quinn is probably one of my fave FMCs that I’ve read in a long time. With only one book left in the series, I can’t help but wonder how Quinn and her monsters will save the world essentially. But I can’t wait to find out.
The conflict dragged through this book. Even with how exciting & unexpected some of the action was, I was bored. I'm really struggling to pick up another whole book dealing with the same problems. Inhaling essence and creating an emotional connection was a fun dynamic. Smutty scenes were decent - nothing too inspiring (aside from Rollicks double cock show). The shutdown of potential MM after 3 books alluding to it was disappointing.
If you're here reading these, you've likely already read the other books. Or, you've at least read THOSE reviews, so you should know what you're getting into by now.
So with that said, I'll leave you with this (as my title states): Each book really does get better than the last. If that's the case, I'm pretty darned excited about the final one! I'm off to read it now!
Quinn may have accepted her fate, but actually figuring out what her powers are and how to control are a whole different thins. Add in demons, adventure, suspense snd yes, growing romance (you just gotta love her guys) and the result is a heady mix that’s pure pleasure - and easy to highly recommend.
Quinn and her men are back and so are the surprises, action, danger and fun scenes. I loved the story and seeing what Quinn must face and overcome. Easy to read and so hard to put down. Loved the character and story (which I will not give away). Add in the demons and get even more fun than usual. Add in powers and choices that must be made too. Loved it.
