Every time I think I have found ‘the best’ Adoration book, I come across another one which becomes my new favorite. Well okay, there are a goodly number I read which are just okay, but Susan Tassone’s Praying in the Presence of Our LORD for the Holy Souls far exceeds ‘okay’ and considering it is devoted to prayers for a specific purpose, I did not expect it to include so much variety.

It explains how to pray for the dead and why Catholics (some Jews as well) have traditionally remembered their departed loved ones.

It includes the following prayers, to name a few: 1) Hail Mary adapted/expanded to Souls in Purgatory, p.59; 2) St. Mechtilde’s Our Father, which (again) expands the traditional Lord’s Prayer specifically for the Holy Souls, p.87; 3) one petition from the Psalter of Jesus, p.93*; 4) Royal Road of the Cross, p.121; and 5) numerous prayers for priests and religious who are frequently forgotten once they die and who suffer far worse than the laity in the afterlife if they have not availed themselves of all the graces God has given them.

I bought this book to read and then put out for our Adoration Library but I liked it so much I bought myself my own copy, just in case our library copy gets legs and walks. It is so good. I know Susan Tassone includes many of her prayers in her other books, but I really liked this one. Highly recommended.

*There are 3 Psalters: the first of David, of 150 Psalms, the second of Our Lady, of 150 Aves and the third, composed in the fifteenth century by an English Carthusian priest consisting of fifteen petitions to Our Lord. The tenth pertains to the Holy Souls and is given here.

May 10, 2018: I did not realize this was already in my books as recommended by a dear GRs friend. But it was and I just never got around to reading it before. Now that I am trying to include more books in our Adoration Library as well as read more books for the Holy Souls, this book accomplishes two purposes in one.
