A stoic warrior-maiden and a villainous priest-king make the most unlikely alliance in the history of the five kingdoms.
When a rescue attempt to save a clutch of dragon eggs from the soul mages goes terribly wrong, Warrior-Priestess Verdria of High Rock finds herself on the wrong side of a portal, deep in enemy territory.
She soon learns she’s in the heart of the soul mage’s empire and when Honryn, the future priest-king of the mages, takes a liking to Verdria and saves her life, she’s pretty sure she’s facing down a ‘fate worse than death’ scenario.
Just when she thinks things can’t get any worse, Priest-King Honryn introduces her to the Royal Court of the Soul Mages, the most morally corrupt and bloodthirsty court in existence.
Life is cheap.
Souls are currency.
And Verdria has caught the fancy of the young priest-king, and while he doesn’t want to steal her soul, he’s set on winning her heart.
And she’s equally set on having his heart, after she’s carved it out of his chest.
But when she discovers Honryn’s most monstrous secret, a secret he’s even hiding from his fellow soul mages, she’s moved to pity and offers to aid him.
Lisa Blackwood is the USA Today bestselling author of the Gargoyle and Sorceress Urban Fantasy series. She and her new co-author, S.M. Schmitz, are also embarking upon a new Space Opera Romance series. Book one is titled, Vengeance: Warships of the Spire. It can be found in the Dominion Rising boxset anthology.
As well as writing, Lisa is also an avid gardener, horse enthusiast, and dog lover. She grudgingly lives in a small town in Southern Ontario, though she would much rather live deep in a dark forest, surrounded by majestic old-growth trees. Since she cannot live her fantasy, she decided to write fantasy instead. Freya, her ever faithful and beloved hellhound, ensures Lisa takes breaks from the computer so they can rid the garden of cats with delusions of conquest.
Meh, this was a fine, if shallow, read. As is so often the case with books that are both part of one series and the start of a spin-off (this is book 4 of the Huntress vs. Huntsman and book 1 of the Soul Mage Saga), the book stands alone plot-wise but is largely without any world-building or description. A person really isn't meant to read it as a book 1, apparently. Those who have read the previous series are meant to understand that the established world is shifting to focus on side characters, but all else is the same.
Add to this lack of robustness in the world a plot that barely progresses (the whole book is about three days), a narrative that dedicates significantly more time to what characters are wearing than...well, just about anything else, and ends on a cliffhanger at precisely the moment anything big finally actually happens, and what you have is a fairly flat read. It's not that it's bad. I think I'd continue the series if I found it free. But it's also not particularly engaging. I wouldn't, for example, pay for more.
But the mechanical writing is fine. The whole thing reads easily enough. I liked the characters and that the heroine is sort of a muscly butch, but the hero is still hella attracted to her. The book is also very sweet, which I know some like. (The snippets I saw on TikTok made me think it would be dark. So, I was a bit let down by the cotton candy, personally.) But still...it was just kinda meh.
Verdria, a warrior-priestess with quick wit and a smart mouth has a deep routed hatred of the Soul-Mages. When she is captured by her enemy and forced to play nice in order to keep herself alive she commits to gathering as much information as possible as she plots her escape to better prepare her people for what might be coming. She knows she can’t trust a soul mage, but she never anticipated meeting someone like Honryn and experiencing such a physical attraction & a softening of her feelings.
Honryn, the future priest king and most powerful soul-mage in his kingdom has no qualms about using his power to show people who is in control. The son of a soul-mage and a warrior-priestess he was raised to take on a role of immense power, he has his own secrets but vows to keep the Verdria safe, earn her trust and encourage her to join him in his cause.
The book ends on a cliffhanger when a royal party is ambushed by assassins and Honryn and his twin sister are gravelly injured and Verdria rushes to save their lives.
Spice level 🌶️🌶️🌶️, an easy read with good character development, I would have enjoyed a bit more background in to both their histories. I’m hoping to get more information about Verdria’s fertility, as it’s mentioned so frequently in the book, and Honryn’s plan that definitely involves some redemption for his mother’s people and why he has such an affinity for snakes….More spice is also never a bad thing, especially when two heads are involved.

So... It's definitely not a standalone. I don't know how many books this saga will take, but I'm not going to invest more time on it. The world building is minimal, since it's part of the Huntress vs Huntsman (HvsH) world. Still the little we get contradicts some of the things that happen in book 1 of that series. There, the priestesses were assholes, rapists and slavers of the centaurs. None of them were with the priestesses willingly, but here Verdria says they "cherish" and protect their men? Hah! The centaurs weren't much better, they would force the priestesses too. I didn't particularly like the world. There, soul mages are portrayed as the vilest of them all, which is saying something. Here, they're kinda crazy and "brutal". But, if they kill each other willy nilly without much consequence just because, how the hell are there so many of them? It's not like they kill only adults, they kill children as well just to prove a point. Verdria makes the observation that there's so many children, but... Their women are infertile (because soul magic corrupts them), so, how the hell do they reproduce? Because the only women there that are not soul mages are the kidnapped priestesses (who, by the way, behave like nothing is amiss, even though they're basically sex slaves).Which contradicts was was said on HvsH, because there soul mages care for one thing and one thing only: souls. They take no one alive, they take souls. Not women. But we needed our MMC to have something different, didn’t we? Verdria doesn't seem too preoccupied with escaping, apart from the occasional thought of "I need to get out of here" that pops out of nowhere once in a while. I thought this would be sort of an enemies to lovers kinda thing, with some dark themes and all, but no... it felt more like a friends to lovers situation, since she doesn't really act like she hates him at all. Just the stray thought of "I don't trust anyone"... while taking everything she's told at face value. And the matter of her withdrawal from the suppression tea (which in HvsH is immediate and painful) is just brushed over and she’s just a little horny and that’s all. Yet she was lusting after Honryn while still under the influence of the tea, so… Anyway, I got to about 80-ish percent, and, through other reviews, found out that it ends in a cliffhanger. It’s not that interesting, I’m not gonna get the next book, so I decided to quit. The writing isn't bad, but the characters are not that interesting.
What a wonderfully rich world Blackwood has created, full of warior priest maidens and villanous soulmages stealing souls to fuel their power. Verdria is a wonderful character, blunt, larger than life and loyal but hot blooded all the same, especially when it comes to a certain unexepected Soul Mage high priest. When she is captured by one of the most powerful mages, she vows to end his life if its the last thing she does, if she can get her wayward body to listen to her and resist his charms.
Honryn is unusual from the beginning, not what is expected of a Soul Mage. A complex mix of two magics dualling within him. I loved his rebellious nature from the start, giving us a hint that not all is as it seems. And even though he is a morally gray character, performing heinous deeds, you can't help but like him as you learn more about him.
This is a really well written, absorbing story with plenty of intrigue and action. A real page turner though be warned, it does end on a cliff hanger. Fortunately, the second book is due to drop anytime soon, so not too long to wait!
An enjoyable fantasy adventure, a touch of enemies to lovers, and plenty of intrigue to keep you reading. And isn't the cover gorgeous?
After the cliff hanger of the last book, I knew this would be an enemies to lovers situation but damn if Mr man did seem to be in love from the start. I guess a woman threatening to kill you could be sexy to some, I ain’t here to judge 🤷🏻♀️
As far as the spice level, it’s the same as the pervious books- non-full sexual situations but that’s it. Since the women loose their magic if they get pregnant/have sex (kinda seems like either might be true) which is bullcrap 😂 that’s some Catholic Church level guilt right there.
You get to see the soul mage empire and start to get to see the inner working while our girl is trying to keep from stumbling through the dead bodies. She’s now in a twisted world without morals where it’s kill or be killed, lead with fear, live with hatred. Love? What’s that? Family? Who? Power is everything to these people and does she have enough? It is definitely a departure from the previous books and the set continent. It’s a new world with almost completely new characters.
Verdria is a priestess-warrior. Honryn is the most powerful man of the greatest enemies of the priestesses. A soul mage. So when he captures Verdria and brings her back to his empire, she needs to find a way to escape... unless she can earn his trust, obtain his secrets, and destroy the soul mages right from under their noses.
The only problem? Honryn doesn't seem like such a bad guy. Yes, he has secrets of his own, but they're nothing like what Verdria thinks...
Lisa Blackwood continues to engross me in her worldbuilding! Another morally gray male with, shall I say, monstrous attributes, that I loved from the start. Fantastic characters. Just be aware that this story ends on a cliffhanger, but it just made me more excited for the next installment!
If it weren't for the sudden cliffhanger ending, this would be a solid five. But I was upset the story ended as it did. It's a great story, just be prepared for the cliffhanger, Honryn, Priest-King Elect of the Soul Mages, and Verdria, Warrior Priestess of the Moon Goddess are the two principal characters. They are sworn enemies and initially try to kill each other, though Honryn is fascinated by her strength, skill, and courage. He saves her from death numerous times, but she doesn’t trust him or his fellow mages. There are many bloody battles and other court intrigues as Honryn’s rivals seek to dethrone him. Verdria gradually comes to like him and saves him several times until the end, when he’s being poisoned by a magic knife during an assassination attempt - that’s when the cliffhanger ending happens, meaning we have to wait for the next book to find out if he lives or dies.
The books I read leading up to this one were all a little... meh, and I was worried this one would be as well. But this was so much fun! I hadn't read Blackwood's Huntress vs Huntsman series prior, so it felt a little light on the worldbuilding, but even without that background I quickly got wrapped up in the world and creativity of it.
I thought the characters were very well done and I absolutely loved Verdria and Honryn. There were also some editing issues, but it was few enough that I could look past them. My biggest complaint is that I wish the book had been longer! I am dying to read the next one, but the fact that it was supposed to be published Jan 2023 and still hasn't been is a bit concerning.
Another EXCELLENT book in the Huntsman/Huntress series as this starts the Soul Mage Saga. I was enraptured the entire time! I only put it down because real life wouldn't leave me alone! LOLOL Who'd'a thunk I'd have positive feelings for a soul mage?!?! Well I can tell you now I do!!
I'm thrilled to read the next book in January, and am now going to reread this one slower to savor everything all over again.
If you've enjoyed all the other books in this series you will not be disappointed in the slightest!
The story contains an interesting contrast of magics: Mood Goddess vs. Soul Mage. It also represents the conflicts presented by a merging of the two magics. Interestingly, just pure fighting ability sans magic plays an unexpected role. When it goes to fighting Verdria is at the top of her game. She is not afraid to use her abilities, and they are robust.
I would have preferred that it did not have the abrupt cliff hanger ending, not as bad as some but certainly never a place to leave the reader.
Now this is an enemies-to-lovers story that really has epic fantasy and historical research written all over it. I like how the author introduces Honryn to the reader (that was an interesting manner of blasphemy). I really liked how the author had Honryn meet Verdria with sparks, literal and figurative, and sharp pointy objects flying everywhere. I really need to see just how much the two of them shake up the soul mage court while they "court". Definitely need to get my hands on the next book!
I saw this Author on TT, started with this book. loved it!
This story had me hooked from the beginning and I could not put it down. Thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns.
World building and characters that just pull you in and have you hanging on the edge of your seat. They're all unique and interacting with might and humour and totally badassery!
I honestly didn't think I would actually like this read, but I'm happy to be wrong! Once I started I didn't put it down. The writing of the world and characters were descriptive, bloodthirsty, and just immersed me until the dreaded cliffhanger. Luckily the next installment is soon and I can get my series fix! Seriously Lisa Blackwood knows how to create a world that makes you want to keep exploring. Definitely a need to read!
I have been waiting for this book since the author first mentioned writing it! The story does not disappoint. I love the warrior-priestess character. The intrigue, the magic, the battle action, not action action ;-) which isn't really my thing, but does make an appearance in the story. I highly recommend this book and author. Check out, Master of the Hunt.
"Soul Mage" is the sequel to the "Huntress vs Huntsman" series, but now we get to learn about soul mages and their country. It was all interesting: court intrigues and the particularities of soul mage's magic. Loved the dynamic between the hero and the heroine. My biggest complaint is that the book finishes in a BIG CLIFFHANGER and now I can't wait to find out what happens next ...
This book is a overall a very good read, although short. It is longer than its predecessors and much better than all of them: it is clear it has received more care by its author (the previous books had an enormous amount of misspellings and grammar errors, which are blessedly absent in Soul Mage). It is however a pity that this book cannot be read without being familiar with the previous chapters of the series, especially Dragon Archer. Before you read any further down my review, however, know this: if you are triggered by women referring to a man as “male” and by men referring to a woman as “female” this is not the saga for you!
To tell the truth, the three protagonists of the books of the Huntress vs Hutsman saga are extremely similar one to the other: all badass heroines, all from the same people, the Warrior Priestesses of the Moon Goddess, all with the same set of moral values... The male protagonists are better: each has his own personality and the only thing that is approached more or less in the same manner by all three is their physical attraction to the FMC.
If you've liked the previous three books, you can't dislike this one, because it is leagues better and it's about a people that you are likely extremely curious to know more about: the Soul Mages. After the first few chapters, which are actually the last scenes from Dragon Archer told from Verdria's POV, the story is set entirely in the Soul Mages' tropical island after Verdria is captured by the male protagonist.
However, if you didn't like the fact that the smut in the previous books was never “complete”, you will be disappointed here as well. Truth be told, however, while i favour reading standard sex scenes, i liked the smut in the previous books enough even if they never went father than oral or masturbation, because the author is good at describing them. Since this book is supposed to be the first about a saga involving the Soul Mages, i really hope that we get some serious sex by the end. Because if we don't it's going to be as much of a torture for us readers as it is for the characters.
The world invented by the author, as i have already said, is very interesting. It is unquestionable that everything was created in a way that would favour the smut (and we already knew it from the blurb), but still i like the cultures described here: both the Warrior Priestesses and the Soul Mages have their own individuality (as do the Centaurs, which are however only sporadically mentioned in this book).
Can't wait for the next instalment! The ebook said it was supposed to come out in January 2023, but I don't think it has yet? I've looked online, on Lisa Blackwood's website and on Goodreads, and nowhere did I find another mention of this information… If anyone who reads this review notices it is now available please let me know in the comments <3
I have waited Years for this book! I was asked if it was worth it? I still don't know. At first it seemed too slow and then too fast. But I want to keep reading to find out what happens next. I guess I can wait until January.
This is a unique and very well written book. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the plot. I’m a sucker for an enemies to lovers undercurrent and this was masterfully done. Magic, dragons, lust and political intrigue, everything we need in a great book
This was a wonderful book, don’t get me wrong, but I feel all the progression and feelings get lost when an author leaves a cliffhanger. Regardless of the outcome.. I hope the next installment comes soon.
It was slow to start, but i really enjoyed it and now I'm trying to find the next book I'm this series. Love his they switched the love interest to a non petite woman for a change!
I really enjoyed the world building in this book and plot felt like layers upon layers which I also really liked. It was also a very slow burn with a lovely enemies to lovers and it was an enjoyable fantasy romance read.
