I read the Legend of Merrow Mermaid Zaina about a week ago. I read this book in English. This is a very quick and short story about the mermaid Zaina.
I am struggling a bit with this story. I think this story is told based on the legends of the merrow mermaids. And those legends are hundreds of years old. And if you keep the legend and put them in a modern day story, it feels pretty wrong.
The book starts with Jack. He is unmarried and life hasn't been kind to him. A bartender tells him he could catch a mermaid. And make her his wife. If he steals her red ribbon, she is as good as married to him, and she needs to stay with him. So he decides to do that. When he catches Zaina, he takes her home and hides her ribbon. She instantly says: 'One day I'll steal it back, and then I will go home.'
He kinda makes her his maid and he sleeps with her, because he feels entitled to it. She goes along with it. But it felt forced. She wouldn't have done it if she was free. In other words, it felt like rape. And how this story is told. It feels like it was okay. That Jack is allowed to rape her.
One day the neighbour comes along when Jack is at work. He has the ribbon, and returns her to the sea. She gives him a box with pirate jewels as a reward and the neighbour shares it with Jack. They tell their story in the pub. And now women are curious and want to meet them and make them happy. And many fishermen find love.
But who in their right mind would willingly love a kidnapper and rapist? This story felt so surreal. It wasn't love. It was about a man who takes and takes and takes. And gets rewarded with jewels and women who throw themselves at his feet.
I think this book should be either labelled a legend. With the warning that the legend is hundreds of years old. And that it contains difficult subjects.
But I think it is advertised as a novel. And yeah, that feels for me personally, very wrong.
Apart from the subject matter. The book is very short, there isn't much character building. And feels more factual than story-like. So it didn't really draw me in. This book, it wasn't for me. I will not rate this book on the subject matter. But my rating is based on how it is written. Because it didn't have depth, felt rushed and incomplete. I'll give it two stars.
My advice would be to edit the book. Clearly put in a warning that it is very degrading towards women. And add more depth to it. Tell us more about the characters. Give them a story arc. And give it a more magical feeling. Because I absolutely love mermaids and legends. And give the mermaid a voice. And bring equality into the story.
So yeah, it wasn't for me. But I think it could be a strong and solid story if it gets edited properly.
