Two hundred people died in the Hexley Airport disaster. Ten years later, some say their ghosts still haunt the terminal building, determined to expose the truth about what happened on that fateful day.
When Casey starts a new job at the airport, she soon discovers that the departure hall is a spooky place at night. The spirits of the dead linger in the shadows, watching the living and desperately trying to issue a terrible warning.
Another tragedy is about to take place.
After all, no-one ever truly got to the truth about the Hexley disaster. Now a sinister force is on the move again, determined to repeat his actions and cause more death. As a powerful snowstorm hits the airport, can Casey work out what really happened before a killer strikes again?
The Ghosts of Hexley Airport is a horror novel about a tragedy that was never solved, and about the determination of the dead to gain vengeance. This is the 2022 edition of the original 2017 book.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
Hexley Airport had a tragic disaster ten years ago when a plane crashed killing everyone on board. Since then things are just not right with the airport as ghostly activity seems to have abound in and around the airport. Casey is just getting used to her new security job up in the terminal and Tom is trying to teach her the ropes of what her job entails.
While Casey is learning the ropes she also has feelings of the ghostly activity in the airport whereas Tom is in denial most of the time as he doesn't believe in ghosts.
Then the haunting escalates and things take a more sinister turn which ends up making Tom a believer and giving Casey more to think about as she finally starts seeing apparitions.
Thoughts:
This story was very creepy right from the beginning of the book and continues on with the atmospheric haunting throughout most of the storyline. Around 60% into the book the haunting goes into full bloom and the book is just non-stop with things happening.
There is a major twist though near the end of the book which threw me for a loop as I never saw it coming and which made the mystery of the haunting more in-depth! Though there were some unanswered questions about certain things with the story, but all in all it was a very spooky ghost story! Giving this one five "Boo-Spooky" stars!
Wow this book was creepy as hell! Cross did a fantastic job replicating the facial recognition sensors in the airport. I shivered every time those things tried to get a reading.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because of the turn of events toward the end with Casey & Tom. I didn't like that changeover and definitely wasn't expecting the story to go that route. Maybe it will grow on me but for now, I can't help but think a different ending would have suited the story better.
This one starts out pretty creepy. Ghosts aren't my fave, but I really enjoy Amy Cross, and it was a buddy read in Castle Dracula. So I couldn't resist. If ghosts give you the chills, you would be hooked on this book from the second chapter. Then the story escalates, and I grew to enjoy the two main characters. Casey was likeable, Tom was quirky. I love quirky characters. As the story progresses, more and more people can sense ghostly presence. Then the end left my jaw dropped open with a twist that was out of this world. I still have a few questions that are unanswered, but this is another great one by Amy Cross
The Ghosts of Hexley Airport is basically what the title says. A new security guard must deal with the night time visitors, who may or may not be there. You see, there was a tragic accident ten years ago.
Cross does really well with the amostphere of the story, and the characters, by and large, are belivable. The big reveal does work in an overall sense, but there are two characters that don't quite fully fit the reveal in all ways. Whether or not this was due to a typo, I'm not sure. If it isn't, this is one of those books where not everything is explained, but I like that.
The book is self published, but I only say two real typos.
I absolutely love Amy Cross' books and while I didn't give this one five stars, it's just because I felt it lagged in the middle. There's a twist towards the end which blew my mind, and when I realised what it was I shook my head at myself, I should have realised that Amy Cross would give this story a spin all her own. She may take conventional themes, but she takes them to places no-one else would think of.
The ending left me in tears, because it was beautiful.
Amy Cross is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Her books never fail to leave me in surprise.. This one for example. The ending? You have got to be friggin kidding me!
I'm not really one for writing reviews. However, this book has soooo many good reviews that I just had to put my opinions out there in the hope that not everyone is enticed into reading this book like I was.
This book is absolutely NOT worthy or 4.2 stars average rating for a number of reasons:
The typos are absoulty ridiculous. There are tonnes of them and it is so off putting to think that the author hasn't even tried to get it proof read properly before getting the book published. They are awful!
The cutting off speech at the end of a sentence is so annoying. This happens hundreds of times throughout the book where a character doesn't finish their sentence. Just urgh!!
I am a huge fan of horror and like to be spooked but this book didn't spook me one bit! The amount of times the author writes about an unnoticed figure standing watching is just so boring!
This book is super cheesy, sounds like it was written by a child and quite frankly is rubbish... avoid if you can!! (Sorry Amy Cross- I'm sure you worked really hard on it, and this is just my opinion, but I'm not sure how this book is so highly rated and I want to simply warn people)
For the most part, this was one of Cross's best books that I've read. It was a solid ghost story about a smaller airport that's still haunted, literally, from a major plane crash 10 years earlier. The characters felt real, the sense of foreboding with the various ghost sightings projected the plot along nicely. And then with about 50 pages left, there was this huge and sudden twist. It was extremely unexpected, and admittedly interesting. But it also led immediately to an even bigger, unexpected plot twist. And the first one especially just didn't make sense. And the way the second one had been set up differently than how it played out, it didn't make much sense either. Maybe you just need to turn your brain off and go with it, but the twists were so jarring, it was hard to do so.
Well! Reading a Amy cross book is like reading a movie!! instead of watching, you read!
The Ghosts of Hexley airport is a story about a bad flight crash which disrupts many lives. The story begins with Casey joining the airport as a night guard 10 years after the horrible incident.
Eve, shows up only if there is going to be another bad incident in the airport and this time she shows up more frequently along with the ghosts of the victims. They are trying to warn everyone about the next incident.
Casey, encounters few of them and the other following events uncovers many unbelievable truths.
This book took me a long time to read, it didn't grip me from the beginning so I didn't feel the need to devour it quick as quickly... Good ghost story idea tho, and I liked the little twist at the end of the book. Lots of ghosts at the airport, from the crash ten years ago, but the main characters for this story are Casey, who joins the security team and Tom who works alongside Casey, and David who works in the perfume shop. Lots of typos throughout but it wasn't to bad whilst reading. This is my first Amy Cross book, but I'd definitely try another :)
This was a great, light read. It was well written, but the kindle edition is poorly edited and has at least two spelling errors per page. That's a bummer, but it's not that distracting I suppose. The big twist was pretty cool, just not my personal preference, but the final sentence of the book was pretty epic, though. I did like this story a lot, but I didn't love it. Probably wouldn't re-read it, but it's good, I'd recommend it for other less picky horror lovers.
This was truly a first rate ghost story from an outstanding mistress of the genre. Amy Cross is an excellent author and this book was so intense, a real page turner with an unexpected twist at the end.
The Ghosts of Hexley Airport is an offering from seasoned horror writer Amy Cross, and the first from the author that I have read. The synopsis really appealed to me, having dipped in and out of the genre along the years. However, in my opinion it fell short of ‘horror’ and was more ‘ghost story’ - and not a particularly scary one at that.
The book tells the tale of a group of characters all linked to Hexley Airport, the scene of a devastating air crash that saw a passenger jet crash not long after take off, killing all on board. Rumours of ghosts roaming the airport are abound, and new security guard Casey is keen to uncover the truth around sightings of Old Eve, with the help of seasoned guard Tom. The finale doesn’t disappoint, with a shocking twist the reader is unlikely to see coming!
The Ghosts of Hexley Airport is a good enough read, although it would benefit from a good edit. Some parts didn’t marry - Tom informs Casey that the airport runs mostly internal flights, suggesting that it is small time, yet it has a duty free shop, a multitude of departure gates, and seats as far as the eye can see. The lack of security protocol is frustrating - Tom and Casey don’t seem at all concerned that maintenance worker Derek wanders in and out of the airport as he pleases, shrugging off his weak excuse for being there. In my opinion the finale quarter is where the book really comes into its own, where loose ends are tied up and there’s a massive ‘aha’ moment!
All in all, enjoyable, but not an author I’m likely to visit again in future.
This is my first book by Amy Cross which is surprising because she's a fairly prolific horror writer and I'm a prolific horror reader. I picked this ebook up because the idea of a haunted airport seemed so unique and intriguing. The story revolves around a pair of security guards on the night shift at Hexley Airport, newbie Casey and veteran Tom have great chemistry. Their partnership makes the first half of the book bearable when it begins to sag a bit under too many scares and not enough momentum. The second half picks up steam to deliver a satisfying if predictable finish. It's a nice ghost story, short and precise. I'm subtracting a star for grammar mistakes because I'm petty like that
I don’t know if Amy the author reads these reviews - but girl, if you do, please I need you to know that the last sentence in this book gave me FULL BODY CHILLS! My god, the wow factor you weaved here, excellent work.
Just amazingly done, far out. The whole book was great and I couldn’t stop reading, but that last part is indescribable. Never have I read anything that took me so by surprise or given me such a visceral reaction as it clicked.
And not to beat a dead horse, but I literally just scrolled back up to read the whole last paragraph again. And I got FULL BODY CHILLS A SECOND TIME MERE MINUTES AFTER THE FIRST. Bravo. Just, bravo.
After a horrific accident at the airport, the town is stuck between trying to move on, and figuring out what happened. While there are many theories about what actually brought down the plane, killing all 218 people on board, nothing was ever officially found.
One security guard continues to look, and begins to see ghosts at the airport. But she is not the only one - others are seeing them too - and its starting to look like another disaster might be about to happen.
Ohhh - this was such a great book! I really enjoyed it.
As far as Amy Cross stories go, this one was pretty good though seemed to drag on a few times. Her books so far have been hit and miss.
Sub par copy editing. And this applies to all of Amy Cross’ books that I’ve read so far. Sentences with missing words. Misspelled words that wouldn’t be caught by a spell checker, i.e. “work” instead of “word”, “care” instead of “case”, etc “ and repeated words i.e. “thought was was insane”.
I was pleasantly surprised by this. Probably one of the more entertaining ghost stories I have read this year. I love how Cross presents a view of the supernatural that is more than your typical ghost tropes. This is a type of story that has been done before but in the context of reading this book I did not see it coming. At all.
This is the first of book of Amy's I have read, and I wasn't disappointed. Hexley Airport has a reputation for being haunted following an plane crash years earlier. I don't want to give to much away, but the characters and plot are gripping and it kept me guessing right up to the end. If like me you love paranormal books and you haven't read this, I highly recommend it.
Fantastic! I couldn't stop reading until it was done! The characters are simple and easy to believe. The plot is clever and thrilling. The whole story keeps you edging in closer Up to the end! I don't do reviews as much as I should and this one sure does deserve a great one!
This was a really good story. What happens after a major disaster happens at an airport, when a plane crashes right after take off? You have a haunted airport of course. What if someone wanted to repeat the tragedy on its anniversary? I loved this concept ghosts haunting ghosts. Great twist. Amy Cross is good for storytelling and some good scares.
Amy does it again! I love her books except for a clunker or two. She never fails to bring some twists and turns into the mix. This book is no exception. It does bog down once in awhile but it's worth to hang on. Someone might figure it out early. It took me nearly to the end and it made so much sense. So enjoy it. You won't be desipointed.
This would have been a bett4er story if the timeline stayed correct. Hexley Airport does not have flights leaving, or arriving, during the 'graveyard' shift. Passengers don't start arriving until after 6:00am and planes have to go through deicing before departure. This means that two of the main characters/victims would have already left the airport before the plane crash happened.
Another great story from Ms Cross. Great characters in a spooky setting of an empty airport with lots of ghosts. An unexpected twist near the end of the story makes for a satisfying read.
Atmospherically, this is one of Cross's best books. I also didn't see the ending coming from a mile away, which is also a plus. My only complaint, without going into spoilers, is that I was a little unclear on the "status" of a character or two at the end of the story.
I really enjoyed this book. It has a great storyline that keeps you guessing throughout the pages and the ending was not anything I was expecting. It truly shocked me!
