Fringe First and Total Theatre Award-winning Breach ( Tank , The Beanfield ) restage the 1612 trial of Agostino Tassi for the rape of baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi.
Based on surviving court transcripts, this new play dramatises the seven-month trial that gripped Renaissance Rome, and asks how much has changed in the last four centuries.
It's True, It's True, It's True blends myth, history and contemporary commentary to tell the the story of how a woman took revenge through her art to become one of the most successful painters of her generation.
absolutely amazing. I'm so excited to be able to meet the writers and actors in AN HOUR!? but yes, my gosh. I'd love to have a chance to see this performed irl🧎🏻♀️
okay post panel thoughts RHRHR I NEED TO SEE A PLAY BY THEM SO BAD. also! I need to reread this with the music I feel like cus I only played 3 of the songs while reading and then I just watched the filmed version but I have been reminded that that version doesn't contain the same songs bc of rights issues! so I haven't appreciated it in its full form yet🧘🏻♀️ #willdothatsoon
read (and watched) this for uni and oh my god so glad I did. so powerful, so witty, such an enlightening way of creating a production on such a hard and difficult topic.
(also side not listening to the music referenced whilst reading the play script for this was SUCH an experience and I request all playwrights include this from here on pls and thank you)
i read this for uni but i couldn’t put it down. it made me feel so sick but the ending restored my hope a bit. the play reminded me a lot of 1536, which i went to see at the almeida, and now i’m desperate to find a recording of the performance. i recommend looking up reference pictures for the paintings mentioned in the play because they’re just so powerful
Such a good way of sharing a story of a miraculous woman (artist Artemisia Gentilesche) and the important theme of consent. A play that needs to be a play.
A powerful, electric and important story. I watched the production of this play online by Breach theatre and good lord, it’s phenomenal. It’s full of rage, the female voice and right vs wrong vs truth. A necessary read for anyone interested in history, court cases, theatre, eating the rich and demolishing the patriarchy.
A truly wonderful play: a good story with important themes and even better acting. The group was able to show how some themes are universal as well as some problems unfortunately.
