Whale Done

Rate this book
In the eighth novel in New York Times bestselling Stuart Gibbs’s FunJungle series, Teddy Fitzroy returns as FunJungle’s resident sleuth to find the culprits behind a blown-up whale and a string of beach sand thefts.

After an escaped kangaroo starts a fire that burns down his house, Teddy Fitzroy accepts an invitation to go to Malibu with his girlfriend, Summer, and her mother, Kandace. He’s hoping to spend some time relaxing on the beach, but wherever Teddy goes, trouble isn’t far behind.

First, a massive dead whale has washed up on the beach—and before anyone can determine what killed it, it explodes. Doc, the head vet from FunJungle, suspects something fishy is going on and ropes Teddy and Summer into helping him investigate.

Then, Teddy stumbles upon yet another mystery involving tons of stolen sand. And the paparazzi start spreading rumors about Summer dating a celebrity, leading Teddy to question their relationship.

Without Summer as his trusted partner, can Teddy navigate the rough waters of this glitzy world and uncover what’s going on?

I remember when Stuart Gibbs books were fun and adventurous, with hardly ever having to worry about him pushing his personal ideas and agendas.
Sure there was always a little something here and there about climate change, something political and what not. But who cares, it hardly affected the book, and it didn't bother me and countless of others.

But in almost all of his recent books his agendas have been a HUGE focus. Which is getting very old.

I couldn't read this book without being stopped multiple times to talk about how we need to save the oceans and the animals and all sorts of random stuff. Which makes sense because this is a book about animals. But still, it was way too much, especially compared to the other books in the series. All I cared about is who blew up the whale, not who was such a villain to leave their trash on the beach.

The same thing could be said for his last Funjungle book and the tenth Spy School book, and probably the third Charlie Thorne book. (Although I'm not sure about that one, I haven't read it. So this is just a simple guess.)
I'm all for putting whatever you want in you're book. It's you're book. You can do what you want. But for fans like myself, one of my siblings and a couple of my friends; these books are becoming more and more disappointing and hard to enjoy.

And I've mentioned before that I reread all the Spy School books last year just to make sure that my growing dislike for this author's books wasn't because I was aging out of them. But when I reread them all I loved them as much as did the first time I read the series.

With the inclusion of more gay characters (which are thankfully adults), and personal political beliefs, I feel like these newer books (besides Once Upon A Tim) are losing their original sense of adventure.

Which really sucks because I love this author and his books and I'm tired of writing this bad reviews because it makes it look like I don't like him or what he does. So I'm promising now that the next great Stuart Gibbs book I read, I'll make a great review about it :D

But I still want to put this out there for people with similar beliefs as myself.

When an inconsiderate worker sets off fire crackers near FunJungle when the weather has been very dry and a kangaroo is spooked, a horrible fire burns down the substandard employee trailer park. Because JJ McCracken, the owner, has always been concerned about the threat of fire, he is prepared with crews that save the zoo, if not the housing or surrounding area. Teddy doesn't have a place to stay; his father is off to Argentina, and his mother can sleep in her office at the zoo. When his girlfriend Summer suggests that he goes with her and her mother to visit California, his parents can't really object. They are staying in an exclusive beachfront community with Binka, a model friend of Summer's mother. Also along is Doc, who is visiting the marine animal center in Long Beach. When an enormous whale is found dead on the beach, Teddy and Summer want to investigate. Cass, a scientist tasked with performing an autopsy on the animal, is willing to talk to the kids when she realizes they have a scientific interest, and Doc takes a shine to her and wants to help. When the whale explodes in a spectacularly messy way, Teddy gets involved in the investigation. At first, it seems like it might just be a college prank, and two local Harvard students are implicated, but Cass and Doc soon realize that the amount of explosives involved are not something they could have put in place. There's also a local beach resident who claims that the beach is disappearing, and it does look like sand is disappearing. This isn't FunJungle, though, and Summer seems to be interested in hanging out with people other than Teddy. Will he be able to able to solve the mystery without her?
Strengths: Like the Texas adventure in Tyrannosaurus Wrecks and the Yellowstone excursion in Bear Bottom , it's good to see Teddy and Summer being able to venture away from the zoo. Summer's background gives them the wealth and privilige to be able to do this, while Teddy's family's problems ground him. There's enough goofiness (like the exploding whale) to make this appealing to younger readers, and enough ecological mystery to appeal to older ones. Teddy's relationship with Summer sees some ups and downs; all 8 books of the series take place over a very short period of time even though the first was published in 2010, so this is realistic. Summer's celebrity, being used to hawk eco-conscious clothing, is appealing. There are some excellent villains, some animal highjinks, and, of course, Teddy's uncanny ability to solve the case. I very much appreciate that Gibbs' addresses environmental issues in his books, and also that he is responsive to reader suggestions and crafted a marine adventure after getting a lot of requests. Perhaps Teddy and Summer need to follow Doc and Cass to Baja so that Gibbs can write stories to go with titles that were suggested, like Twist and Spout and License to Krill.
Weaknesses: The villains have improved since the first FunJungle book, but I would like to see them with a little more nuance. I'm a fan of characters who read a bit gray, although my students never complain about ones that are more black and white.
What I really think: These books are a little easier to read out of order than the Spy School series, which is really helpful when I have a lot of students reading through them. These are always such fun, and do get better with each installment. I'm looking forward to seeing what happend next, but it may be time to return to FunJungle for a bit!

stuart gibbs was my favorite childhood author. you’ll see me reading his books until i DIE.

with that said, this book was meh. the mystery tho was slow at the beginning and then it just abruptly got solved, which wasn’t my favorite but oh well.

also like every time you turn around they’re talking about the environment and what bad things are happening to it- which isnt like terrible, it’s educational at least, but like- TOO MUCH.
too much to the point where it wasn’t very believable, because let’s face it no shot everyone is so incredibly well-educated in the environmental happenings of whales and plastics. and NO SHOT EVERY CHARACTER CARES THAT MUCH. like there is no mid level sympathy- everyone has such a deep love for the environment which, good for them, but it’s not realistic in the slightest 😭

GONE WOKE!!
My kids have enjoyed Stuart Gibbs and his many series for a long time. After reading some of his most recent releases, including this book, we will no longer be supporting an author that is promoting woke ideas. Filled with your typical LGBQ plotlines and emphasizing globalist ideas of climate change, this author will no longer be given to my children. Another author giving in to the woke culture.

The characters had lunch at a food truck which gave them a lot of plastic utensils and plates and generally just plastic waste. The characters don’t want to throw it all away, so one character bring it home to try to recycle. This sounds good, but is actually very problematic.
What she did is called wishcycling. This is when people try to recycle things just by putting them in the bin. If even one non-recyclable item gets into the recycling, an entire load has to be thrown away. This creates even more problems than before.
Kids reading this book are going to try to recycle any plastic they want and think that they’re doing what’s best for the planet while ensuring that more plastic ends up in the ocean.

The mystery wasn’t very exciting, and the eventual conclusion was based on some vague hints. It was also a bit too dramatic.

Out of all the FunJungle books, this is the best one yet! The multiple plots, along with the suspense, action, and excitement, made it an excellent book to read. I enjoyed the relationship issues in this novel, since it gave the story more of a suspenseful feel, to see where Summer and Teddy would end up. The environmental issues brought up in this book really played a part in making the novel more enjoyable and important. I completely recommend this book to anyone looking for a fantastic action-packed book.

To state the obvious: Whale Done is well done! Gibbs continues to hit it out of the ballpark and I continue to devour each new entry in each of his mystery series. Teddy joins his girlfriend Summer and her mother on a vacation to Malibu after his home burns down. Doc, the head vet from FunJungle where they live, joins them so he can check on an injured sea lion. When they arrive, they discover they are staying on a beach with a dead beached whale that the wealthy neighbors are desperate to get rid of. Teddy, Summer, and Doc are asked to help with the autopsy but before they start, the whale explodes! Just like that, Teddy finds himself in the middle of another mystery. How did the whale die? Who blew it up and why? Is the crazy surfer dude correct that sand is being stolen? And why does the paparazzi think Summer is dating a rock star? You don’t have to read the previous entries in the FunJungle series to enjoy Whale Done but do yourself a favor and read them all!

I just love Stuart Gibbs, that's it. That's the whole review.

Okay, no, I can't leave it at that, because Stuart Gibbs deserves to receive actionable and specific feedback about why he's so amazing:

Whale Done has Teddy leaving the FunJungle are (his home burned down) with Summer McCracken, to spend the summer on the California coast. While he's there, a whale that has washed up on shore explodes. And not just slightly, but is obliterated. The case seems cut and dry, but Teddy knows theres more so he starts investigating.

I loved the way Stuart Gibb incorporates SO MANY environmental concerns into this novel. The plastic, the stolen beaches (which he says doesn't really happen in the US, but there are whole "legal" operations around this - read The Geography of Risk: Epic Storms, Rising Seas, and the Cost of America's Coasts to see how corporations actually profit from rising seas), and all the different ways that a whale might die at humanity's hands? It's just such an entertaining and simultaneously educating read, which is just what Stuart Gibbs does so well with this series. My inner middle-schooler comes out in full force when I read these.

One thing that I was expecting to be touched on that wasn't was the ability for whale carcasses to explode because of gas build up as they decompose. I don't know how that would have tied in to the story line, but when I read exploding whale, that was where my head went right away, and it would've been nice to see that possibility at least just alluded to, but you can't get everything! All in all, a fantastic middle grade mystery book about the environment and marine wildlife!

I loved this newest installment in the FunJungle series. The antics were out in force and didn’t disappoint; I laughed out loud for the last two chapters at all the chaos! I enjoyed the messaging about taking care of the ocean and its inhabitants too. Kids are never too young to learn to take care of the planet!

We love this books series and hope there are many more to come. Gibbs is so descriptive that at one point early on in this one my 10yo son lost all the color in his face and he rolled the window down thinking he might throw up (yes is was a particularly disgusting visual in the book right then). Gibbs does a fantastic job covering relationship struggles as well as environmental/ecological/endangered animal issues in a highly entertaining (but also absolutely educational) way. My son has definitely become much more environmentally aware and often wants to do more to help. We'd also love to see this series turned into movies (or TV shows).

Really great book with a good plot and good characters. It is part of a series so if you do read it make sure you read the first ones! I really recommend this book because of the humor, plot, and the important messages the whole series tells us about animals, our planet and climate change. I also really recommend the author (Stuart Gibbs). He has great books that I think would interest a lot of people!

5 Stars. Having real the previous 7 Fun Jungle books, I thought I knew what to expect. I was definitely proved wrong. Gibbs has elevated the writing of his series and characters, while presenting an intriguing and twisty mystery plot. He researches and respects facts and history while providing a satisfying ending that does not suspend disbelief. The books keep improving as Gibbs is not dialing them in, like other authors often do. So believable, so fun, so enjoyable and so important to environmentalists and animal lovers everywhere.

Teddy Fitzroy is back in the center of a BIG issue . . . A dead whale on the beach! The 8th episode in the Fun Jungle series, Stuart Gibbs shares amazing information on a variety of sealife, whales, “sick oceans”, and a concern over something we all take for granted, sand. The environmental concerns are well addressed in Whale Done, and Gibbs has found some amazing ways to galvanize his readers into taking action to make a difference!

Every one of Stuart Gibbs’ books are a fun, funny, educational pleasure to read. I can’t believe he’s gone 8 deep in the Fun Jungle series and is still cranking them out.

This is a terrific MG series though older kids and parents will love it too.

I have been reading this series for a few years now, and I have loved each and every adventure I’ve read. I loved how much research went into climate change, plastic pollution, and how much we are effecting our oceans. This book was great to point out how much we could improve on in the world and I really appreciated it. Along with the real world facts, the fictional part of the book was amazing and I hope that I can continue to enjoy this series with new books to come.

Adventure meets animals, mystery, zoology, and even ecological themes as well as enough tension to make it fun.

Teddy's parents work and live at FunJungle. When fireworks and a kangaroo collide, the entire surrounding forest and employee housing goes down in flames, although the park remains fine. While his parents will sleep and live in the office until new homes are built, Teddy takes his friend up on the offer to spend time at her mother's friend's house in California along with the head doctor of FunJungle. While there, a whale explodes all over the beach...and the mystery begins.

While this is the 8th book in the series, it's the first one I've picked up. And that wasn't a problem. The tale can be read as a stand-alone.

This was a nice balance of adventure, fun, friendship, mystery, and information, too. Teddy and Summer work well together, but as with real friends, do have moments where they understand each other better than others. It creates a natural relationship and makes the two easy to root for as they solve the mystery and deal with other issues.

I do enjoy the animal twist and added information this series includes. Teddy and Summer know their way around creatures/animals, which allows a smooth addition of facts and information without ever feeling as if it's being purposely pushed into the tale. It just flows right in. The ecology side isn't any different. Modern concerns about the environment weave into the mystery and experiences smoothly...like Teddy collecting trash while walking through exploded whale guts along the beach (sounds a little strange but it works).

While there is this learning goodness, it's the quick-paced adventure, which makes this enjoyable to read. Something is always happening, and it's hard to see what's coming next. Not only does Teddy have to figure out what's happening with the whale and the disappearing beach, but even the other characters have their own personalities and problems. There's family, relationships and friendship, too. The villain was also well-placed, and while not carrying quite as much depth, offered a worthy adventure for Teddy to work with.

It's a smooth read packed with information and excitement, and I'm looking forward to see what will come next (and I'll be heading back to see what other adventures Teddy has already had). I received an ARC and really enjoyed this tale.

I somehow failed to subscribe to notifications for this author who I adore and writes the cutest middle grade books. I'm a 40-year-old who freaking loves the fun jungle series. I started reading spy school and space Case and some of the other series with my children when they were young and now they're adults. I saw this at the library with my stepchild and freaked out because how did I not know it existed!? So to Amazon we went to immediately order it and this book became the best part of my Christmas vacation.. mostly at least. I might be exaggerating but the series is a great example of why I love middle grade literature. The characters are vivid and real and flawed. These are stories my children have enjoyed and loved reading with me. Now I read them on my own. Cheers to Stuart Gibbs, I'm so glad I found you over a decade ago!

Whale Done mixes mystery, humor and teenage angst all together for a successful combination. The book also provides background information about environmental concerns. Given within the story, it provides a great way to learn about these big picture topics.

This was my first taste of the FunJungle series, and I must say, I enjoyed it as well as my daughter. It's a great middle school level book or beyond if you're looking for some levity and a mystery to be solved.

I believe Teddy and Summer provide great role models for kids, so I'm all for the FunJungle books. In fact, I've already ordered my daughter all the other FunJungle books for her Summer reading.

Thank you, Goodreads, for this great book. Perfect for a buddy read with your child.

Completely disappointed in this author. What started out as a great children’s series has become a pile of political ideology. Let kids be kids and keep your political views to an adult audience or even better to yourself! I can’t recommend this author anymore. Very sad.

I am absolutely in love with this whole series. I started it when I was maybe 12 and read through book 3 as that was all that was out at the time. Currently I am 20 and last year I was in a reading slump, so about 9 months ago I decided to begin reading some of Stuart Gibbs books again (beginning with the Spy School Series) to test whether or not they held up well. They hold up splendidly! I finished what’s currently out for Spy School so moved onto the Funjungle series and uuuugh it’s been such a blast! I love every single one. I love Teddy and his wacky tales and the cliffhangers nearly every chapter ends on and of coooourse all the animal info I learn! I love how it’s so well done, never patronizes it’s young audience and teaches them new things and about animal conservations and what we can do to help. I’m so sad this is the last of the series for now but am ecstatic for the future installments. Onto the Moon Base series!!! Mwah mwah, XOXO, Not Gossip Girl 💋

Teddy and Summer solve another animal centered crime while educating readers on ways to make the planet better for all life. Teddy (14) and Summer (15) have aged out of middle grade novels, but the the story still has middle grade interactions between our two main characters. There is a little bit of teen dating drama, but it is very G rated.

I thought Tyrannosaurus Wrecks was our favorite, but then this one took Top Ranking again!! Whale Done was hilarious with the typical amount of fun learning that goes along with a FunJungle book. This one has some more adolescent relationship themes but my 8th GR was fine with it. The first sentence is the best lead off in the whole series!
